ISSUE 107 SUMMER

St George's Annual Jazz and Dance Show See inside for more photographs

From the Headmistress Exam season is well and truly with us at St George's and in the past two weeks the Fifth Years have started their GCSEs, Lower Sixth girls have been sitting AS exams in those remaining subjects that still have AS Levels, as well as Second and Fourth Years doing in their internal School exams. But that does not mean that it has been all work, work, work, as you will see in the bursting pages of this edition of eNews. From the stunning Jazz and Dance Show, to athletics meetings in the driving rain and residential trips, the girls have been as busy as ever. There is also a great deal to look forward to after half term with the Third Years off on their annual pilgrimage to Normandy before knuckling down to their School exams, and exams for First Years and Lower Sixth too. We also have the Second Year play, Sports Day, Music for a Summers Evening and on the Friday after half-term, our Sports Award evening where we are delighted to welcome

England Lacrosse Captain, Laura Merryfield, to speak to us all and present the awards. The Upper Sixth will be on study leave and embarking on their A Level exams after half-term and we wish them all the very best of luck. The end of term sees Prize Giving and we will have the chance to celebrate the successes of this year and congratulate the the Upper Sixth on all they have achieved as they take their leave of us on their last day at St George's. I look forward to seeing many of you there.

Mrs Liz Hewer Headmistress

Scholars Breakfasts Mrs Hewer hosted a series of scholars breakfasts during this half term for Art, Music, Drama, Performing Arts and Sports Scholars. Over breakfast the girls shared their thoughts on what it means to be a scholar at St George's and the way in which each department nurtures and develops their impressive talents.

Sixth Form Art Georgian Sixth Form pupil Grace, a senior member of Artways Art Club, has taken part in a special collaborative project as part of her Gold Arts Award. The following is an article courtesy of River of Colour. 'Grace was first introduced to, and fell in love with, the poem, "The Fox in the National Museum of Wales" by the great Welsh poet and author, Robert Minhinnick, as part of A Level English Literature. Mr Minhinnick won the Forward Prize for Best Individual Poem, for the second time, in 2003, for "The Fox in the National Museum of Wales" which is published as part of his King Driftwood collection. Grace had the idea to try and create a bridge between the art form of poetry, based on the written word, and the visual art of painting on canvas. She contacted Mr Minhinnick to ask him if he would be prepared to collaborate with her, giving her a deeper understanding of the meaning and, importantly, the original inspiration behind his poetry, and helping her to explore ways of translating it into the visual medium. She was absolutely over the moon when he replied and not only offered her guidance, but was prepared to very generously give up his precious time, face-to-face, so that she could meet with him and discuss his poetry in detail. After they met for the first time, Grace spent hours pouring over her notes, trying to capture everything they had discussed.

She gained much additional insight into the poem and many ideas about how she might best capture it. For example, she discovered that Mr Minhinnick was using techniques, such as alliteration and repetition, to produce layer upon layer of word play reminiscent of the language structures used by the early Welsh bards, in their mother tongue. How could she capture, in paint, something of the flavour of this traditional, rolling, and yet dexterous and light hearted, linguistic banter? She soon realised it was going to be an extremely pleasant but ultimately impossible challenge to even attempt to realise, as a picture, such a beautifully woven and complex piece of art. Grace's tribute to Robert Minhinnick's "The Fox in the National Museum of Wales" is now nearing completion and you can see it, for the first time, as part of the River of Colour exhibition at the River and Rowing Museum, on the weekend of the 13th and 14 May, 2017'.

Boarding Life & Socials

St George's boarders enjoy a range of diverse activities each term. Highlights so far this term have included a fun filled day shopping and walking around Guildford where the girls visited the castle ruins and were able to relax after studying hard the previous week. They have also successfully completed the Sunflower Charity Walk around Virginia Water Lake in support of Thames Hospice. The girls brushed up on their creative skills decorating 3D letters for their rooms, had fun making pancakes and also succeeded in tie dyeing their very own t-shirts! Fifth Year boarders from Knatchbull enjoyed the sunshine on Sunday, 21 May by having a water balloon fight in the apple orchard. In the end, everyone was wet but much laughter relieved the stress of the ongoing GCSE examinations. All agreed that they had enjoyed a splashing time!

Roller Disco with Woodcote House On Friday, 12 May, the First and Second Year girls had their social with Woodcote House School. The girls greeted the boys on arrival before having a fantastic evening skating around the sports hall and enjoying the music and lights. They ended the roller disco celebrating Charlotte's birthday. A fun filled evening was enjoyed by all. Dancing at Radley On Saturday 20 May 2017 the Fourth Year girls set off towards Oxford for their social with Radley College. There was much excitement, and music, on the coach journey as the girls looked forward to an evening that promised pizza and dancing. Upon arrival, the girls were able to feast on a wide selection of pizza and cake before getting down to the important task of dancing and having fun. The evening was a great success and the girls are looking forward to more socials with Radley.

Leiths Cookery at St George's School Pavlovas... From whisking egg whites to poaching fruit and mastering meringues, here is just a snapshot of the fun packed, hands-on weekly sessions on the Leiths Cookery course at St George's, taught by Mrs Jones. Cooking is an extremely important life skill and there are lots of cross-curricular applications too. The girls touch upon Mathematics, Economics, Chemistry and Biology as well as improving time management and washing up skills! The girls gain a range of cooking techniques including knife skills, food safety, kitchen hygiene and healthy eating as they learn to cook a range of tasty dishes. From simple recipes for family and friends to impressive puddings such as pavlovas this term, the girls are gaining inspiration and confidence to keep on cooking long after the course is finished.

Horse Riding Success Georgian Third Year pupil Imogen has enjoyed some fantastic achievements in horse riding this year. Below is an account of her recent success: On Sunday 23 April, I went to a show called the National Pony Society Area 14, in Essex. I got up at 4:30 in the morning and won my first class on a 122cm pony called Harvey. Later that day I rode my pony called Nev in the 133cm mountain and moorland working hunter pony. I had to jump round a taxing course that included going through water and jumping a double on top of a bank. Then I had to complete my show and conformation. There were 16 ponies entered in my class but only 4 ponies including mine went clear. I went back in the ring to get placed and I won! This qualified me for the Royal International Horse Show which is one of the biggest horse shows in the world that takes place at Hickstead Showground. On 13 May I rode at the Royal Windsor Horse Show on a pony called Beauty on the Bay. I rode her in the 148cm show pony class and came third. The Windsor Horse Show is a qualifier for the Royal International Horse Show and the top two ponies in my class had already qualified which meant I qualified as well. The following day I rode my own pony called Nev. I rode him in the 133cm plaited working hunter pony and came fifth. The top four ponies in front of me had already qualified.

First Year Performance Success On the 14 May, Kendra in the First Year at St George's and member of the Chapel Choir, played an important part in a performance at the Shaftesbury Theatre in the West End. Kendra is part of the Pauline Quirke Academy, based in Windsor, who performed in a production called “The Lazy Ace - A Musical Comedy”. It was an evening performance at the Shaftesbury Theatre in London. Kendra took the part of Angel Applewood, “a young naive starlet looking for a big break as a singer in Vegas”. She gets the part when she has the opportunity to sing "Let It Go" from Frozen at a nightclub. It was quite daunting but Kendra really enjoyed it, and from the audience reaction she went down a storm.

Berkshire Young Voices 2017 Aliya in the Third Year is a member of Berkshire Young Voices, the younger arm of the country choir. Aliya sang with the choir at The Royal Albert Hall last year and this year she (along with the choir) is singing with the BBC Symphony Orchestra. Aliya has recorded with them twice at Maida Vale Studios, so far singing Carmina Burana, and in May this year they sang with them again in a filmed performance.

Berkshire Young Voices also sang at Eton College, along with the Chapel Choir, in aid of Future Talent, a charity set up by the Duchess of Kent. The charity enables those who might never have known they had musical talent because of lack of money, background or opportunity, have the opportunity to learn and grow musically.

Jack Petchey Achievement Award Eleanor, a Sixth Form pupil at St George's has won a ÂŁ250 Jack Petchey award for her voluntary work in Girlguiding. Jack Petchey CBE is an East End entrepreneur. Born into a poor working class family, he left school when he was 13 with no qualifications. After leaving the Royal Navy and being told he would never make a businessman he decided to start his own taxi business. Working hard and overcoming adversity, he went on to become a millionaire but now it is philanthropy that interests him and the belief that no matter what, people should think of others and give back to society.

Trips

Young Enterprise Regional Final

On Tuesday 2 May the St George’s Young Enterprise team Serendipity attended the Regional Finals of Young Enterprise. It was the first time a St George’s team had reached this stage in the competition and they were delighted to attend. The afternoon and evening provided the opportunity to showcase Serendipity’s products, trade stand and fantastic customer service and sales skills.

The event culminated in presentations from all the team with Serendipity being awarded a prize for reaching this stage of the finals. Whilst the team did not make it to the next round they thoroughly enjoyed the event. They learned a huge amount about how to continue their success in Young Enterprise and the whole Serendipity team were wonderful ambassadors for St George’s.

St George's Annual Ski Trip Over the Easter holidays, St George’s girls travelled to Serre Chevalier in the French Alps for a week of intense skiing. The group consisted of girls who ranged in ability from absolute beginner to experienced skiers. The atmosphere among the group was engaging, friendly and supportive towards each other regardless of age or skiing ability. This made for a fun and cohesive group of girls who were keen to learn new techniques and enjoy the beautiful environment. The girls skied for five hours a day in three different ability groups led by instructors from E’clole du Ski Francais. The girls were guided around the mountain, seeking out the best ski conditions that the girls could enjoy but also experience a challenge to enhance their skills.

Fortunately the snow upon arrival at the resort was followed by three days of glorious sunshine, and then another afternoon of snow to ensure perfect ski conditions for the final day. These conditions allowed the more experienced skiers to ski across 90% of the resort and enabled the beginners to learn with the cushion of soft snow for any "beginner’s falls".

On the 6 and 7 May, Izzy, Somadina, Helen and Chloe went to the Model United Nations Conference held at Wycombe Abbey School. Throughout the conference the girls represented different countries (India, Kenya and Columbia) and debated two agendas. The first agenda was 'The equal participation of Women's political participation and Leadership', and the second agenda was 'The Protection and Advancement of the Rights of Women and the Gild Child during Armed Conflict and in Postconflict Situations'. In representing Kenya, Chloe learnt to consider the opinions of other countries other than just her own. The experience was extremely enriching and the girls found it very interesting to hear the ideas and opinions of other people. The Diplomats Dinner was an exciting event on the Saturday evening where they enjoyed most of the food, but weren't so sure about the cucumber and basil sorbet...

Classics Trip to Bath On Thursday 25 May, the Third Year visited the historic city of Bath. The girls spent the morning at the Roman Baths where they attended a lecture on Roman Britain and enjoyed a tour. In the afternoon, the girls visited the Museum of Fashion where they were shown around in small groups by one of the museum’s guides. Both visits were designed to help girls with project work that they will undertake subsequently at School and to enhance their knowledge and appreciation of British heritage. Visit to the Old Vic Theatre On Wednesday, 24 May girls in the Sixth Form travelled to London to the Old Vic Theatre to watch a performance of Woyzeck, a play set in 1980s Berlin. The Cold War rages and the world sits at a crossroads between Capitalism and Communism. On the border between East and West, a young soldier (John Boyega) and the love of his life are desperately trying to build a better future for their child. Image courtesy of www.theartsdesk.com

Trips

MUN Conference

Third Year Geography Trip On Wednesday 10 May the Third Year went to the Natural History Museum in London for a Geography trip to study volcanoes and earthquakes about which they have been learning in their lessons. Firstly they had an exciting interactive talk about the formation of earthquakes and volcanoes and different girls were able to volunteer to help with demonstrations, for example, jumping up and down to simulate an earthquake and measuring the vibrations using a seismometer! The talk was fascinating and made the girls think about the planet on which they are living. The girls then went to visit the volcano and earthquake exhibition and looked at all of the information there. The girls especially loved the Kobe earthquake simulator! It was a really interesting and fun-packed day.

First Year Residential Trip to PGL On the 24 to the 26 May, girls in the First Year went on an exciting team-building trip to PGL Liddington. The pupils were split into teams, and took part in a variety of activities such as raft building, problem solving, high ropes, swimming, pioneering, climbing and archery! The trip was designed to give the girls the opportunity to try new challenges, consolidate existing friendships and explore new ones, as well as to just have some fun and realise what they are capable of.

DofE Ready Steady Cook On 22 May girls taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh's Bronze Award set up their portable cooking equipment on the lawn in preparation for their upcoming expeditions. They spent time learning some important food hygiene and cooking safety information and then went on to start preparing their meals. The girls did a brilliant job of crafting meals out of the ingredients they were given. The task was to produce a two or three course meal with ingredients they could cook without any electricity. Each group came up with imaginative and tasty recipes which play a big part in preparing the girls for their DofE expeditions.

Music Morning with Frogmore Junior School On Wednesday 10 May, Year Three pupils from one of St George's partnership schools, Frogmore Junior School, attended an exciting morning with the Music Department. It was a fun-filled day that included drum and music workshops from St George's talented music teachers, a lovely lunch and some fun games. During the first workshop, Mr Smith, talked about the world's earliest drums as well as the world's first mobile phone, the talking drum. His session ended with an impressive drum solo which filled the little ones with excitement. The group then split into three, each having a session of African drums, where they learnt about the range of sounds and rhythms from a djembe, followed by a singing and vocal warm up, and finally some choir singing. At the end of the morning the groups came back together and sang the choir song as an ensemble.

Library News

Half Term Roundup This half term has been another busy time for the Library with visiting book fairs and poets. Between 25 April and 2 May, St George’s once again hosted the Scholastic Book Fair. Owing to the phenomenal success of the Autumn Book Fair, Scholastic offered all of the titles, stationery and posters at half price and the girls and staff were delighted to grab a bargain or two. The added benefit was that all sales contributed to free books for our School Library. Throughout the duration of the Book Fair, the girls were also submitting Library Mottos. With five £5 book vouchers available to be won, the competition was designed to entice girls to think about what their school library truly offered them. The winners submitted the following mottos: “Why live one life when you can live thousands at the library” – Bella, Sixth Form “Your library: Where magic happens” – Grace, Sixth Form “Our library is like a paradise” – Mimi, Second Year “Life is a book, it is up to you to write the pages” – Lucy, First Year. “Have a biscuit, keep on reading” – Isabel, First Year

Other particularly strong entries included “Bookstores are great, but come to our library” and “cookbooks, yearbooks, textbooks, storybooks, sketchbooks, scrapbooks, hymn books…this library has them all!” Next on the agenda was a visit from performance poet Tony Walsh on Tuesday 16 and Wednesday 17 May. He worked with the First to Fourth Years in dedicated sessions, performing some poetry and helping them to write their own poems. The girls were treated to a number of poems exploring a variety of themes including female empowerment and life experiences. The performances were followed with discussion of different poetry styles and techniques such as Haikus, Shakespearean form and making every syllable count in a poem. Tony challenged many of the girls to “break my heart in three syllables” and some of the compositions were truly jaw dropping. The First Year girls were particularly inspired to compose poems which pushed the boundaries of reality and travelled as far as their imaginations let them. The two days culminated in an optional session open to Fifth Year girls, the Sixth Form and staff. The girls left every session with a new perspective on poetry and its relevance to their lives.

Fifth Year GCSE Drama Productions The Fifth Year girls have been working hard since December to prepare for their Devised GCSE practical examinations which took place on 27 April. 'We'll Meet Again' (Annabel, Camelia, Leila and Sophia) followed the real stories of four women: suffragette Emily Wilder Davison who died trying to put a sash on the King's horse, a woman who lost her husband at war, a young Catholic girl whose baby was taken away from her due to conceiving out of wedlock and a German refugee who could not reconnect with her mother after being estranged for years. The costumes for the piece were designed by Amelia as her design-based drama GCSE. 'Never Forget' (Amelia, Henrietta, Katie and Victoria) explored the infamous events of 9/11. The piece showed the moments leading up to and during the attacks as well as the years after. They told the stories of those who died during the attack, of loved ones who were left behind, as well as that of one terrorist, his motives, and how he came to be in that position. Both pieces were extremely emotionally engaging with some beautiful moments of physical theatre and wonderfully written and performed monologues.

Jazz and Dance Show On Thursday 11 May, girls from all Year groups took part in the annual St George's Jazz and Dance Show. The evening started with some light refreshments provided by the dedicated catering team, with parents waiting eagerly for the first performance of the night, the St George's Jazz Band. Staff and pupils in the band did a fantastic job opening the show with a performance of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah. The next performances included a range of beautiful ballet pieces by girls in RAD grades three to seven. The dedication and hard work each of the girls have put into their performances was clearly evident. Other acts included contemporary dance by Experience, a tap dance piece and a performance from the musical Hairspray. The evening ended with the Jazz Band performing What a Wonderful World (Thiele), Fever (Cooley/Blackwell) and Tequila (Flores).

Junior Concert

Junior Concert

On Thursday, 18 May First, Second and Third Year girls showcased their musical talents in the annual St George's Junior Concert which was led by Mr Hillier and Miss Mason. Performances included piano pieces by Aimee and Ruby, a violin performance by Daisy, two trombone pieces by Maia and Eleanor, Lucy on the flute and a variety of vocal performances by Olivia, Amira, Jacqueline, Matilda, Isabel, Sasha and Kendra. All of the girls in the First Year Choir sang enthusiastically and both parents and staff had a wonderful evening.

Charity Work

A Mufti Day on 5 May raised more than £469 in support of Save the Children, Macmillan Cancer Care and Rosie’s Rainbow Fund.

The 47 Commando Association The History Department at St George's takes a group of girls on an annual trip to Normandy. During the visit girls and staff meet with the 47 Commandos who fought in the D-Day landings. The girls attend a memorial service with the veterans, and talked (and more importantly listened) to them about their memories and experiences. Talking to the veterans first hand is a very moving experience for the girls and adds so much to the trip. The charity is going through some changes at present as there are fewer and fewer veterans left and it is becoming more about commemoration. Radio 4's Paddy O’Connell, whose father was in the 47s, has asked St George's to sponsor a walk they are doing this year to raise money for this new charity. On 6 June 2017, 47 Royal Marine Commando Association and friends will be retracing the route of the 47 Commando’s epic 13 mile assault behind enemy lines to capture Port-en-Bessin and link up with US forces on D-Day, 1944. Should you wish to support this cause to help raise funds for the D Day Veterans and for memorials to those who died in the Liberation of Europe, please follow this link: https://mydonate.bt.com/fundraisers/paddyoconnell1 or visit the website: www.47charity.org/

St George's Day Feast

St George's Day was declared a national feast day in England in 1415!

Sports News Tennis and Rounders We have had a very busy Summer Term with lots of rounders and tennis fixtures in the calendar.

Strong doubles play from Amy, Adrienne and Phoebe has been a highlight of some of these matches.

The U12s have played some very competitive games in rounders. We have seen some outstanding individual performances, in particular, Amira and Imogen for their bowling, Saskia and Lara for their batting and Angelina at backstop.

In rounders, good all round performances from Solana have helped the U14 team, as has strong post play from Celia and Imogen, solid fielding from Adrienne and good bowling from Isabella. They had a very exciting 22 – 21½ win against The Marist, which was just one of the nail biting games they have played so far this term.

The First Years have also played some very close and competitive games of tennis, again with strong performances from Lily, Ruby, Ava, Daisy and Jessica. The U13 girls have performed well as a team against local opposition and have had a very even split of player of the match performances, awarded to Rosie, India, Molly, Tilly and Ariana. The U14 team have had several tennis matches and rounders fixtures so far this term. They have had some very close games against strong opposition and pushed many of the tennis sets to tie breaks.

The U15s have had some very good rounders games for the A and B Teams. Anna has been a very good captain for the B Team, batting very well and leading by example. Sophie has played well around the posts as has Olivia and Ellie. A strong batting performance from Catherine was complemented by good bowling from Ally and Lily, and saw St George's win 17 - 15½ against LVS. In the tennis matches, Mille and Molly played very well in the games against Holyport and lead the team to an exciting 12-12 draw in this fixture.

Polo On 18 May, a historic polo match took place between St George's and Eton College at The Guards Polo Club. Eton have not played an official game against a girls' school before, and a girls' school has never been invited to play a match at The Guards. Alannah, Chloe and Alexia with the kind help of their cousin Cristobel, played very well in this battle of the sexes which ended in a narrow defeat by Eton 4-6.

Staff vs Pupil Tennis Tournament

On Monday 22 May, the first ever St George’s staff and girls tennis tournament took place after school. It was a scorching hot day and 12 pairs of willing members of staff and girls took to the courts in great spirit. With the first section of the tournament being played in mini-leagues, the top pair in each division went straight through to the semi-finals.

It was always going to be a close final and due to the fact that it was decided over a set period of time rather than reaching a score, it was important to stay ahead right from the start. When the whistle blew, the game score stood at 3 - 3, but with Mrs Hewer and Izzy leading the game by 40 points to 30 they were crowned this year's champions.

The semi-finalists were, Mr Lightfoot and Grace, Mrs Hewer and Izzy, Mr Goldsbrough and Zoe and Mr Naeem and Lily.

No competition could go ahead without the enthusiasm of staff and girls, however, there always has to be a winner of the wooden spoon which this year was awarded to Miss Jackson and Bella.

The matches were very tightly contested but resulted in Mrs Hewer and Izzy, and Mr Lightfoot and Grace progressing through to the final.

Athletics The weather (and illness) was against the girls yet again in the athletics meet at St Mary’s on 20 May. However, many of the girls voluntarily took part in more events to ensure that St George's had enough pupils for a team. Rosie, Lara, Solana, Isabella, Lydia and Phoebe all receive mentions for their efforts and achievements on the day. Cyle Carty came in to deliver the first session of his coaching clinics which was a well attended, fantastic few hours. The girls focused on sprinting technique, long jump and relay-changeovers. It is always great so see such a positive role model share their passion, enthusiasm and talent in a sport. The girls worked hard and had smiles on their faces from start to finish. If girls would like to join either of the remaining two sessions it is not too late to sign-up, just let Mrs Lowe know.

Georgian Gallop 2017

On Thursday 27 April girls from each Year group took part in the annual Georgian Gallop, a tradition that has been taking place at the school for the last few years. Girls and staff braved the rugged terrain running a relay race around the school grounds. Well done to Alexander House for being crowned overall winners!

St George's Alumnae Reunion 2017

The Georgian Alumnae Association held one of its regular reunions at the start of the Summer Term. Around 70 alumnae and staff came to the reception at the Brompton Oratory in Knightsbridge. A huge advantage of the hall – apart from its central London location - is the fact that we can enjoy delicious refreshments prepared by our own school caterers. The attendees came from a variety of years at the school, some having been there as early as the 1950s and others as recently as 2008. However, the largest group left school in 1987 and took the opportunity of this reunion to celebrate their 30-year anniversary and to share memories of their school days. Many had not seen each other since leaving St George's but all agreed that it felt as if it was only yesterday! As might be expected, the atmosphere was very animated, and the occasion was punctuated with shrieks of delight as long-lost friends met up again. Mrs Hewer welcomed all the guests and Mrs Sue van der Veen the Alumnae Officer, passed on best wishes from former members of staff who had not been able to make it to the reunion. As can be expected, the mention of all these familiar names prompted lots of 'oohs' and 'ahs' from the nostalgic audience! We hope that it will not be long before we see all of them again.
