ISSUE 110 WINTER

The Grinch - First Year Pantomime See inside for more photographs

From the Head The second half of the Autumn term is always one of the most energetic and exciting in any school and the last six weeks at St George’s has flown by. I have watched many sports fixtures, given out numerous awards, been entertained by visiting speakers and heard about some fantastic trips from the girls. My personal highlights have included our first Open Mic night where the girls showcased their talents, in some cases largely hidden until now, in an informal jazz club style setting in the Sue Cormack Hall and I also have to mention the brilliantly entertaining First Year pantomime ‘The Grinch’. According to some boarders it easily rivalled the seasonal offering from the Theatre Royal in Windsor! As the term has drawn to a close we have enjoyed the special St George’s Christmas celebrations including an effervescent Christmas dinner and party and the beautiful Carol Service at Windsor Parish Church to end the term.

There is a great deal more from the past six weeks in this edition of eNews and I hope you enjoy reading it. With very best wishes for Christmas and the New Year, Mrs Liz Hewer Headmistress

The Grinch - First Year Pantomime

The Ginch - First Year Pantomime Since the beginning of this half term, the First Years rehearsed diligently for their first ever St George’s production. The Grinch was a fantastically fun and festive show filled with silly jokes, slapstick comedy, audience participation, amazing costumes and wonderful dance routines. The girls’ comic timing and over-the-top characters were perfect for panto and had the audience crying with laughter from the beginning. Director Miss Johnson said “It was a pleasure to have had the whole year group involved in The Grinch and we have had so much fun exploring a story which isn’t normally performed in a panto style. The girls were enthusiastic, dedicated and very organised from the moment they auditioned which made the whole process a joy. As we saw in the two shows they performed on 6 December (a matinee to over 300 local Primary School children and an evening showing for families, staff and Georgians) we definitely have a First Year filled with many extremely talented performers; their standard of performance was definitely higher than one would expect for eleven and twelve year olds! Thank you also to Mr Pearn for his amazingly green set and for agreeing to make snow fall inside the Sue Cormack Hall! It ended the show perfectly.” Well done to all First Years for their hard work and for bringing Christmas cheer to St George's. The standard of talent was so high and we can only be excited about what amazing drama the current First Years are going to produce at St George’s in years to come.

St George's Open Mic Night

Open Mic Night On Thursday 23 November, St George's hosted parents, staff and girls for the School's first ever Open Mic Night. There was an array of performances, including some girls who have never stood on the stage before. The Sue Cormack's jazz club theme made the whole evening a fun and relaxed event for all involved. The standard of talent on display was incredibly high, and we look forward to this being the first of many SGA Open Mic Nights to come.

Chapel Choir at St Paul's Cathedral

Chapel Choir at St Paul's Cathedral On Monday 6 November, girls in the Chapel Choir had the privilege of being asked to sing Evensong at St Paul’s Cathedral, London. The girls arrived in London and immediately began practising before the service began at 5.00pm. Parents, staff and the public attended the service at the Cathedral and the girls sang beautifully. Following the service the girls, staff and many parents enjoyed a supper at Pizza Express.

Boarding Life & Socials @SGA_Boarding Christmas at Markham House The boarders in Markham House have had a busy halfterm with lots of exciting events and outings happening, especially as they have begun their preparations for Christmas. On Saturday 18 November, they went to Windsor on Ice during the first day of the season! The girls had a wonderful time skating around the rink, looking every bit like professional skaters – not one girl needed the help of a penguin assistant! After skating, the girls had the opportunity to have a look around the Christmas stalls set up in the gardens, and to sample some Christmas treats! They then made their way into Windsor to finish up the afternoon with some Christmas shopping. On Tuesday 5 December, girls spent an evening decorating their common rooms with some festive snacks and music. On Thursday 7 December, the whole boarding community attended the annual Christmas trip to the Theatre Royal in Windsor to watch Sleeping Beauty. On Sunday 10 December despite the snow, the girls ventured to Westfield to do their Christmas shopping for their families and friends. In the evenings, the girls have enjoyed festive crafts activities and movie nights on the sofa as the days have become darker. It is fair to say that the First Year boarders probably have the most festive dorms!

Christmas at Knatchbull & Loveday Throughout this half term, both the Knatchbull and Loveday boarders have also enjoyed a festive few weeks, full of Christmas cheer and community activities that have helped the girls to enjoy the last few weeks of the Autumn term. The girls have enjoyed going to the cinema on the weekends and having relaxing pamper nights with pizza. Towards the end of the term, the girls ventured to Westfield to do some Christmas shopping, enjoyed decorating the trees in the boarding houses and were treated to a trip to the pantomime in Windsor with the Markham girls.

Wine-Tasting Sixth Form Social with Winchester College On Saturday 11 November, the Sixth Form hosted Winchester College for an evening of wine tasting. The session was run by wine expert Johnny and saw the girls, boys and staff sample a small glass of sparkling rose before moving on to try five different wines from around the world including whites, reds and a dessert wine. Unusually, the wines were accompanied by chocolate and this worked surprisingly well despite the suspicion of most at the start! Along with the tasting, our expert explained the process for producing wine and gave a number of useful tips on how to enjoy and taste it. There were a couple of wine related quizzes and games played by the mixed groups on each table with everyone getting to know each other whilst enjoying their tasting. St George's hope to welcome Winchester back again next year.

Winchester Christmas Markets Saturday 9 December On a beautifully crisp and sunny December Saturday, a group of Sixth Form girls visited Winchester with Dr Tieanu-Koppandi and Mr Wright. The main ambition for the day was enjoying the festive atmosphere at the Christmas Markets in the Cathedral grounds along with some gift buying. However, the girls also made time for lunch together, ice skating, hot chocolate and chocolate con churros. It was a lovely day to begin the last week of term and kick-off the Christmas fun.

Parent Association Quiz Night The Parents Association Quiz Night was an enjoyable and fun evening. Thank you to all the parents and girls who came along to support the event – and a special thank you to Mrs Majer who worked so hard to make the evening happen, and everyone who helped. The next Parents Association event will be a May Ball on Saturday 18 May - watch this space for more details!

Chapel Choir Sing at Coworth Park

The Chapel Choir were excited to have been invited once again to sing carols to the guests at Coworth Park Hotel during Afternoon Tea on Friday 1 December. The guests very much enjoyed the girls accomplished performance at what marked the beginning of the festive season.

The Chapel Choir with Adam Afriyie

St George's Autumn Concert

Autumn Concert Tuesday 14 November, saw the Music School Open Evening followed by the Autumn Concert in the Sue Cormack Hall. Many girls participated (some stood on stage for the very first time) and the event showcased the diversity and excellence that music at St George’s has to offer. As well as solos from girls in several years, the audience was also treated to performances by the First Year Choir and Chapel Choir. With pieces ranging from Andrew Lloyd Webber and Elgar to Taylor Swift, everyone was well entertained and had a wonderful evening.

Junior Concert, 24 November On Friday 24 November the First, Second and Third Year musicians put on a concert for parents in the Chapel. All the girls sang and played with great talent and enthusiasm. There were ukulele, piano and flute solos, along with some solo vocalists and group songs along with a performance from the First Year Choir.

Carols in Windsor Parish Church

Carols in Windsor Parish Church On Thursday 14 December, the annual Carol Service at Windsor Parish Church was a magical end to the Autumn Term at St George's. The Chapel Choir and First Year Choir sang beautifully and the service combined readings from a number of girls in each year group. Staff, parents and girls had a lovely time singing and listening to the choirs and readings.

Christmas Carols and Party

Christmas Party On Wednesday 13 December, girls and staff joined the Chapel choir for Carols and the Christmas party. The carols were followed by a delicious roast dinner in the dining hall; roast turkey and all the trimmings. Girls and staff enjoyed the opportunity to come together and celebrate a successful term and after dinner, the girls made their way over to the Sue Cormack Hall for some dancing.

End of Term Awards On Thursday 14 December, the End of Term Awards took place in the Sue Cormack Hall. Girls and staff came together to celebrate the achievements and successes of all girls who have worked incredibly hard this term. Mrs Hewer awarded prizes for mathematics, music, Duke of Edinburgh's Award, clubs, sports, house awards and many more. Well done to all girls for their work this term.

House Drama Competition On Tuesday 12 December the House Drama competition took place. Girls from Alexander, Becket, Churchill and Darwin Houses competed with fantastic energy and imagination to perform Drama pieces for fellow pupils and staff, with the aim to win this year's contest. Well done to Alexander House for winning the 2017 Mary Fitzgerald House Drama Cup for their performance of Cinderella.

Fifth Year Candlelit Dinner On Friday 1 December the Fifth Year girls attended a candlelit dinner with staff in the South Lawn Room. The girls had a lovely evening, enjoying delicious food and especially enjoyed having the opportunity to get to know the Sixth Form tutor team to discuss their subject choices and plans for next year. This is an important event that helps to give the girls some more insight into what the Sixth Form at St George's has to offer.

St George's Charity Work The Samaritan’s Purse - Operation Christmas Child During November St George's took part in the Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child, a Christian humanitarian aid organisation initiative. Girls and staff wrapped and packed shoeboxes with a range of gifts and dropped them off in reception where a representative collected these gift-filled shoeboxes and, sent them overseas where local churches distributed them to children, on the basis of need alone. The Markham boarders' dedicated an evening activity to the charity. The girls went shopping in the afternoon for supplies, and then in the evening helped to wrap and pack the shoeboxes. It was a lovely evening that provided an excellent opportunity for the girls to reflect on what they were grateful for in their own lives, while they packed boxes for those in need. CPR Training for First to Fifth Years

The British Red Cross donated resuscitation dolls for the girls in First to Fifth Year who have received training on CPR during the course of two weeks in November.

£33.26 was collected for The Royal British Legion from the collection box this half term. #RethinkRemembrance

Trips and Talks Physics in Action Trip On Thursday 9 November, the Physics Department took the Sixth Form Physics pupils to this year’s “Physics in Action” conference at the Emmanuel Centre, London. The girls had the opportunity to hear from physicists working at the cutting edge of the subject. The conference aimed to illustrate the excitement and relevance of Physics through a series of demonstrations and lectures given by distinguished speakers.

The First Year girls thoroughly enjoyed this activity and found it both informative and fun. The Fifth Year's kept the younger girls interested and engaged by using competitions and activities, and awarded chocolates to the groups who won. It was an informative and inspirational activity that was enjoyed by all.

Second Year History Visit to Hampton Court On 27 November, Second Year History Pupils visited Hampton Court as part of their studies on the Tudors. The girls were able to develop their source enquiry skills and were taken on a tour of the Palace. They later attended a workshop on Applying History which the girls found very useful very useful for her studies of the subject. In addition, the girls enjoyed an ice-skating session at the ice rink housed at Hampton Court over the Christmas period.

Upper Sixth History lectures in London On Monday 13 November, the Upper Sixth History group, accompanied by Mr Wright, attended a series of lectures relating to their course on Tudor Rebellions and Disorder.

Lower Sixth visit to the Careers, Education and Gap Convention The Lower Sixth Form girls continued to investigate their possible post-18 options on 16 November when they attended the Careers, Education and Gap Convention at the City of London Freemen’s School. The girls were able to approach and speak to the representative of thirty eight universities in the UK and abroad along with more than twenty employers. The pupils could also listen to a presentation from the professional services firm EY on the variety of ways they might join the company with particular emphasis on the degree apprenticeship route which allows young people to gain entry to a career in the sector without any student debt. All those on the trip returned to Ascot with an armful of literature but, more importantly, horizons broadened and ambition cultivated.

The speakers were all well-known lecturers in their field and spoke at an academic depth which was engaging for the girls but a level above that required for their examination course. Such opportunities to extend the girls’ knowledge and challenge their understanding are vital preparation for university style study. John Guy started and spoke to help us in “Making Sense of the Reign of Edward VI returning later in the afternoon to question “Should the reign of Mary I be considered unsuccessful?” John Morrill spoke engagingly on “Henry VIII and the Break with Rome” but the star turn, as ever, was David Starkey speaking with characteristic energy and caustic wit on the subject of Henry VII. The girls enjoyed the experience and the opportunity to hear such experts in their field delivering findings from up-to-date research.

Trips and Talks Sixth Form Trip to Washington and Williamsburg, USA Over half-term 18 girls studying Economics, History and Politics from the Lower and Upper Sixth went to the United States. The girls started their trip in Washington D.C where those taking Politics could see the Capitol building where the members of Congress take their seats. The girls also explored the museums in the Mall and in particular the Smithsonian Institute. They all had an incredible time learning about the history they had not necessarily studied in class. Many found it very sobering to wander round the Vietnam War, Korean War and WW2 memorials and learn more of the American experience of conflicts in the Twentieth Century. After three days in Washington, it was time to move onto Colonial Williamsburg. During this time the girls had the privilege of attending lectures at William & Mary College as well as using the wellequipped Swem Library in order to engage in an academic world beyond the classroom walls. Not only that, but this opportunity allowed them to find out what a course in their favourite subject would be like at an American university. It was a very enjoyable trip for all involved, and the girls were grateful for such an opportunity

Digital Awareness UK Tuesday 7 November

On Tuesday 7 November St George's welcomed Emma Robertson of the 'Digital Sisters' to speak with the girls about the importance of staying safe online. Emma delivered an engaging and important presentation that promoted JOMO (the joy of missing out) and raised important questions about privacy and information sharing online. Find out more here: https://www.digitalawarenessuk.com/

Trips and Talks Adam Afriyie, MP for Windsor It was with great excitement that St George’s welcomed Adam Afriyie on 17 November; indeed it was the culmination of UK Parliament Week. The girls were, therefore, well prepared to quiz Mr Afriyie on different aspects of his policies and views as well as the political scene in general. He addressed the whole school with a ten-minute talk and then it was over to questioning minds of St George’s girls. From the First Year to the Upper Sixth no one gave Mr Afriyie an easy ride! Perceptive questioning covering Brexit, immigration and the democratic deficit in this country meant that many political topics were covered. We are grateful for Mr Afriyie taking time out of his busy schedule as our local MP in order to ensure the political concerns of the girls at St George’s were addressed. Alumnae Careers Event We are thrilled that so many of our alumnae have told us they are willing to help with careers advice for current Georgians, whether by giving talks in School, offering interview practice or workplace visits, or simply being available via LinkedIn or on the phone. On 22 November, the Sixth Form, Fourth Year and most of the Fifth Year very much enjoyed meeting a group of Old Georgians who came to talk about their careers. Small groups of girls listened to career-specific talks of their choice from the individual alumnae and then in a joint session at the end of the afternoon had the opportunity to put more general questions to alumnae sitting together as a panel. There were excellent – and very leading questions – about the ‘glass ceiling’ and the attitude to women in the workplace, how important it was to have a degree and how to make a good impression when applying for jobs. All vital information, and especially valuable as it came from young women who, not long ago, had been Georgians themselves.

Individual Achievements Judo Success On 11 and 12 November, First Year Farah competed at the British Regional Judo Championships, and was delighted to bring home the Silver medal for her section U32kg for Years 6 and 7 girls. She has now qualified to compete in the British Schools National Championships in Sheffield next March and look forward to learning of her future achievements at this event.

Windsor Art Festival On Tuesday 14 November, two girls from the Lower Sixth Ruth and Kasey attended, the Prize Giving Ceremony for the Windsor Arts Festival 2017. Kasey and Ruth won First and Third prize respectively in the Textile category. The Festival provides unique opportunities for students to exhibit their work on a public platform, receive monetary awards for both themselves and the school, and have a private tour of the Royal Library at Windsor Castle spending time with creative professionals there. The girls had a great day and, in addition to receiving their Awards, the highlights included getting to view some of the Queens Renaissance drawing collection in the Royal Library and seeing their own work displayed at the opening of the Schools Exhibition in the Gallery at Ice, Windsor.

St George's Library News @SGA_Library

It has been a busy half term for the Library with author visits, trips to The British Library, a Scholastic Book Fair and even a murder mystery. Before all of that even got started, the Second Year visited Reading School just before half term in order to attend the launch of this year’s Berkshire Book Award. The girls were entertained by Ali Sparkes as she talked about life as an author and her unconventional path to this career. After half term many of the girls were shocked to find a crime scene in the library. However, the murder was not a real murder but actually an Information Literacy activity. Throughout the week the girls solved clues related to the library in a bid to win National Book Tokens. Lucy, Ruby, Isabel and Kendra were the lucky winners of £10 tokens. We then hosted two authors in one week. On the morning of Tuesday 21 November the First Year girls welcomed Katherine Woodfine as she talked about her popular historical detective series, The Sinclair’s Mysteries. The enthralling session involved some fantastic historical facts, weird Christmas cards and even some dressing up. On Thursday 23 November St George's welcomed Patrice

Lawrence for the entire day. Girls across all year groups were able to meet Patrice and hear her top tips for becoming a writer. The girls were so engaged that many did not want to leave when the bell rang. As they filtered out of Chapel words such as inspiring, authentic and relatable were uttered as the girls chattered excitedly about their own aspirations. Next it was the turn of the Lower Sixth to get excited as they set off to the British Library on Monday 27 November to attend a Digital Research workshop. This workshop explored strategies to use when conducting research online. Issues such as verifying the credibility of sources were debated and the girls came away invigorated and eager to proceed with their Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) studies. After visiting the books, the books came to us on Tuesday 28 November as the Scholastic Book Fair once again arrived. There was the opportunity to enter a writing competition using the prompt ‘Christmas Traditions’. Vouchers for £5 to spend at the fair were won by Mimi, Olivia, Isabel, Alice and Ellie. Finally, the School Library now has a team of pupil volunteers to help out with the regular running of the library and special events as they take place. They have lots of exciting plans ahead.

Sports News @SGA_Sports

House Netball Competition On 30 November Alexander, Becket, Churchill and Darwin House competed in the House netball competition. Despite the extremely cold weather all girls supported their houses and played very well. The standard of netball was very high this year and the competition fierce. The Sixth Form umpired well and organised their teams brilliantly. The competition was very strong in both the Junior and Senior games, but Darwin House were overall winners beating Beckett House by just one point.

U15 South East Berkshire Netball Tournament On Monday 6 November the U15 A and B teams played in the South East Berkshire Netball tournament. The A team faced some strong opposition but worked hard to put what they had been practicing into play. They had a fantastic game against LVS winning 6-2 and fought hard against St Mary’s A to finish with a draw. They then lost against Maiden Erlegh and Holt A but continued to play with a positive attitude. They came sixth overall in the cup competition with Imogen and Izzy achieveing players of the tournament. The U15 B team also worked exceptionally hard with some very tough teams in their group. The team won 4-3 against Maiden Erlegh B but lost their other group matches. This meant they came seventh in the plate competition. Player of the tournament went to Georgia for her excellent shooting throughout.

U12 Netball On Saturday 11 November the U12A netball team entered the Downe House invitational tournament. The girls had already had a busy and wet morning of Lacrosse against St Bart’s but were all excited to play some netball against different opposition. The girls started strong with convincing wins against Eagle House B and St Swithuns B with great passing and movement in the circle resulting in some fantastic goals. The next game was tough against Downe House with St George's losing 4-2. The team finished their group matches against Sherbourne and managed to draw 2-2. This meant the St George's finished third overall in their group and were through to playoffs.

In the playoff round the girls faced some extremely tall defenders and had to adapt their game. The girls were tired from a busy day of sport but still tried their hardest in the last match. The team lost one game and drew the other meaning our overall position in the tournament was eighth. Players of the match were different almost every game which goes to show how hard every girl worked on the day. The overall player of the tournament went to Oona for her excellent interceptions.

U12 South East Berkshire Tournament On Tuesday 21 November the U12 A and B teams played in the South East Berkshire Netball tournament. The U12 A team were entered into the cup competition. As a result of their strong performance in the group stages the girls were put through to the Cup-Plate competition. This meant they had two further matches against Maiden Erlegh A and Bohunt A. These were two very close matches with St George’s ending up runners-up in the group, they therefore had to play the winners of the other group in the semi-final. With some excellent passing down the court and good timing in the circle the girls won 4-1. In the final, the girls faced Maiden Erlegh again but this time they were more focused and determined to win. The final score was 5-2 to St George’s. This meant the girls were announced as winners of the Cup-Plate competition and therefore fifth place overall. Player of the tournament went to Charlotte for her excellent shooting.

U12 Downe House Invitational Tournament

The U12 B team also had a good start in the group stages of the Plate Competition. They won two, drew one and lost one. This meant they were through to the fourth, fifth and sixth place playoffs where they faced The Abbey and St Mary’s C. The girls worked hard and some good passing was seen into the goal circle. Overall, the girls came fifth in the Plate Competition. Alice and Jessie were players of the tournament for their excellent consistency throughout the games.

U12 South East Berkshire Tournament

U13 Netball Tournament On Wednesday 15 November the U13 A and B netball teams took part in an annual netball tournament. There were some close matches throughout the competition and the girls fought hard both in attack, midfield and defence. The A team were in a competition against 9 other teams, whilst the B team competed in a group of 5 teams. Both teams played against all of the other teams in the competition with the A team winning 1 game, drawing 2 and losing their remaining matches. In the B team competition the girls drew 3 matches and lost 2. However, there were notable performances from both teams. The A team managed a fantastic draw in their match against a strong St. Mary’s team and the B team also drew their match against a strong Marist team. Players of the tournament were Ruby and Gabriella in the A team and Charlotte in the B team.

SGA Swimming Team The St George’s Swimming team have taken part in a gala at St Mary’s and Heathfield this half term. The team have continued to train at St Mary’s on a Monday and they have pushed themselves to many challenges at training. One challenge was a competition against the St Mary’s swim team to complete the swimming part of an Iron Man, which is a 4 mile swim in the fastest time. St Mary’s just pipped us to the victory, but the girls were very tired after.

November, the girls swam at St Mary’s and gained their best points of the term, coming 1 point behind first place. St George's ended the term on a high at Heathfield on Monday 20 November, with a first place position in the U12 age group. The U12s have been working hard and their efforts at training paid off at Heathfield. Well done to all girls that competed. A special congratulations to this terms ‘swimmers of the gala’ that were awarded to; Lily, Rosie, Amelie, Annabel, Farah, Isabel, Alice and Elizabeth.

The swimming team have gone from strength to strength at the galas. Some of the Gala’s saw the First and Second Years swimming against girls who were older than them and in some cases we won these races. On Tuesday 14

It would be great to see some more girls get involved with swimming next term. If you want a challenge and would like to get involved with the swim team, please speak to Miss Stepp.

SGA Sports Academy On Wednesday 22 November St George's had the privilege of welcoming GB Olympian and commonwealth athlete Jade Lally. Jade gave a talk about her career and spoke specifically about the routes she took to represent team GB in several Olympic and Commonwealth games and world championships. SGA Festive Fun Sports Morning On Saturday 2 December, the First and Second Years were invited to a Festive Fun Sports Morning in the Sports Hall. The girls were split into teams and given different challenges to complete including physical problem-solving games such as ‘Noughts and Crosses’ and ‘Mastermind’. These challenges gave the girls an opportunity to win points for their team. After an intense morning of competition, full of fair play and laughter – the Red Team came out on top to become our Festive Fun Champions. All the girls enjoyed themselves and asked if they could do it every weekend!
