Review of world achievements in the field of poster design
The 26th International Poster Biennale in Warsaw

8 | Preface
We have come full circle! 50 years on, the International Poster Biennale in Warsaw is returning to its roots – the place that was the driving force behind its creation and development. Beginning this year, the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw will be organizing the Biennale and hosting the event within its own walls. This is an exciting but natural progression, since the Academy has always made its presence felt in all the 25 events held so far. The Academy occupies a special place in the history of the Polish poster, being the cradle of its artistic values, and the alma mater of many great poster designers – Polish, as well as French, Czech, Croatian and Serbian... This is where the “Polish poster school” was and will continue to be shaped. Today we remember Jerzy Srokowski, Eryk Lipiński and, above all, Józef Mroszczak, whose determination and commitment led to the creation of this event. We ourselves are faced with new conceptual and organizational tasks concerning this and future Biennales. We also face such vital questions as what the poster means today, what the visual language of today is in its diverse forms, and how culture, technology and the world of politics affect our understanding of the visual message. No less important is the issue of what artistic and substantive values today guide the relationship between designer and recipient. These are of course timeless questions, but I would like us to dwell on them during this and future International Poster Biennales in Warsaw. It is important that, as we take part in the Biennale and explore the living organism of the Academy, with its broad spectrum of creativity and generations, we make the best use of it. This year the Program Council is international. We are counting on the cooperation of students, artists, critics, collectors, art historians and everyone for whom artistic values in communication are important. And above all, those who simply like posters. We wish to broadly popularize the Biennale and its accompanying events, because this is not only a review of poster art achievements in recent years, but also a time for reflecting on today’s world, since many of the posters being exhibited mirror modern events and attitudes. I would like to emphasize the important role of the Biennale’s co-organizers, namely the Poster Museum in Wilanów, the OOH Agency AMS and the Association of Graphic Designers and also the importance of the support provided by our sponsors and patrons. I would especially like to thank Professor Adam Myjak, Rector of the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, Professor Wiktor Jędrzejec, Deputy Rector for Research and Development, and Professor Błażej Ostoja Lniski, Dean of the Faculty of Graphic Arts, for their enthusiastic and unequivocal hosting of the Biennale on behalf of the Academy. And last but by no means least, all those involved in the frantic preparation of this year’s Biennale.
So on we go!

The 26th International Poster Biennale in Warsaw
Welcome All Avatars! Dorota Folga Januszewska
The history of our fascination with posters is a long one. Its beginnings are associated with the graphic art and printing of ideally combined forms of image and word. This combination proved to have a dramatic impact – it gave life to visual communication, a new language influencing the subconscious, imagination and emotion. At the end of the nineteenth century, Jan Kacper Wdowiszewski (1853-1904), then director of Kraków’s Municipal Museum of Industry and Technology, wrote: “(...) there is rapidly developing before our very eyes a movement centred on the emergence of a new poster art [author’s italics]. This is an erroneous concept. No new art is being created. It is simply developing and spreading ever larger ripples (...)”1 If one bears in mind that as early as 1898 such was the general opinion concerning the universality of poster art, then it is only natural that there should consequently emerge the idea of regularly presenting this field of the arts to the public. It is not surprising, therefore, that an International Poster Biennale had to be established – and that its first edition in 1966 took place in Warsaw. The International Poster Biennale, initiated by Jerzy Srokowski and Eryk Lipiński, organized and first presided over by Józef Mroszczak, was originally held in Warsaw’s “Zachęta” contemporary art gallery, a building located within a 5-minute walk of the Academy of Fine Arts, in the very centre of Warsaw, then being rebuilt after the destruction of the Second World War. 6 June 1966 is considered the date on which the idea of a group of Polish graphic artists came to fruition, one that has evolved into a formula of meetings and discussions on the role of visual arts in the world around us and has continued for 52 years.

As early as the turn of the 20th century, Polish graphic art was a brand recognized throughout Europe. In the interwar period, the successes of Poland’s “artistic advertising” attracted the attention of a broad group of recipients to this unique type of image shown in locations outside the usual places for art: on streets and squares, on buildings and in railway stations. Here artists opened the eyes and minds of passers-by to the lighter and darker sides of reality. Today, when we ask why it was posters that initiated this international exchange of associations, signs and symbols, one answer comes to mind: because posters were about everything and everyone; they were and still are the kind of art that makes us “know and see”, even when this process goes unnoticed. It is in this universality of the poster – whether printed on paper, reflected on huge screens covering several storeys of city blocks, poster-miniatures, digital and online posters, unique posters or finally, poster-paintings – lies the strength of this art form. The poster, at one time pasted up to intrude on and solicit passers-by, is today sometimes seen on enormous screens in cities – like some luminous ghost that emerges and disappears. However, apart from everyday users, it also has its own enthusiasts and collectors, and even its own museums. The oldest international collections of artistic posters were established at the end of the 19th century. One was founded by Roger Marx (18591913) in Paris, another by Jan Kacper Wdowiszewski (1853-1904) in Kraków, while we may thank Paweł Ettinger (1866-1948) for an equally rich and interesting collection2. This affichomanie for posters, as Louis Octave Uzanne titled his book in 1880, was to become by the beginning of the 20th century the most important medium of universal communi-

cation. In the interwar period, the Baryczk family’s town house in Warsaw’s Old Town square was every year the venue for a presentation of the latest achievements in this field of graphic design that partly evoked the book and partly the traditions of street advertising, using photography and developed graphic techniques. This field was one of struggle for art and independence, combating alcoholism and work-related accidents, and informing the public about the most interesting and dramatic events taking place in the world. Even the trauma of the Second World War failed to weaken the role of the poster; on the contrary – the poster proved itself a powerful tool in the struggle and a source of information, which is why the development of this field after 1945 became a natural consequence in a new, seriously damaged and traumatised world that needed to be re-shaped. Without an awareness of the history of the poster and its struggles, it is impossible to understand the role of the Warsaw Biennale. Its second edition in 1968 was accompanied by the inauguration of the Poster Museum in Wilanów, established as a branch of the National Museum in Warsaw and opened to the public on 4 June 1968. The then director of the National Museum, Professor Stanisław Lorentz, was well aware of the important role an exhibition of posters from around the world could play in trying to knock out a window in the “Iron Curtain” that separated Europe at that time. And this was exactly what was achieved! The prize awarded to Andy Warhol at the Second Biennale not only knocked out a window, but also opened up a corridor for the exchange of ideas and art. From that time on, the most prominent artists in this field have been sending their posters and coming to Warsaw. The Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw became the venue for the meetings accompanying these events, and its Faculty of Graphic Arts – a breeding ground for talents and careers. The walls came down many years before 1989. Years passed, new generations came along and new printing techniques appeared, along with new ways of thinking about how to communicate quickly, efficiently and effectively. The poster has become part of our culture, without which it is difficult to imagine a city. It has experienced crises and periods of magnificence, and it has changed as if seen in a sped-up film about the world. It has become an inseparable element of an artistic education – a test of thinking and seeing. Poster mania has flooded the Internet and all paths of visual communication. Although now under a different name and by means of different technology, the poster has started to reach places and people in whose environment “other” art had never before been seen. In the second decade of the 21st century, the poster has become a graphic mediator of problems and transformations, a meeting point of various cultures. It is so ubiquitous, it is almost unnoticeable. Due precisely to its extraordinary significance in the process of artistic education, the poster has returned to the Warsaw Academy for the 26th edition of the International Biennale, opened on the 100th anniversary of Poland regaining its independence. It has returned in the form of numerous avatars – with whom it is worth discussing our understanding of the surrounding world – and in the form of posters revealing a multiplicity of ways of thinking. It is worth once again asking their designers “what’s going on in the world?”

The 26th International Poster Biennale in Warsaw
Some 90 outstanding poster designers from around the world have accepted our invitation to the MAIN COMPETITION. We asked them to select two of their own works and to recommend another poster designer who will present us with one work. In this way 68 participants were recommended. Among these are world-renowned artists and designers and those with less recognizable names, but equally interesting, working individually or in groups, studios and agencies, belonging to various generations, and preferring a variety of styles. Those works fulfilling the conditions for participation are not subject to the selection process – these are all featured in the main exhibition and the Biennale catalogue. We are presenting to the public a broad review of posters dating from 2015–2018. A poster developments update!

Independent Thematic Competition
The 26th International Poster Biennale in Warsaw
The Poster’s Independence Dorota Folga Januszewska “Independent” – the catchword of the celebrations marking the 100th anniversary of several Central European countries regaining their sovereignty, proves to be as valid today as in 1918, at the end of the First World War. Despite many changes in the way we live, the turbulent history of the twentieth century and the eventual overcoming of tyranny, the daily struggle between subordination and independence still affects us all, and is particularly important in the actions of artists. The concept of independence has been the essence of art for many centuries. But it is hard to expect the poster – as a form combining image and verbal message – to be “independent” in its form. On the contrary – the poster in essence, purpose and application must be “constrained”, “subordinate”, “dependent”, as that is its role. Designers have still found however, despite this difficult situation of subjugation to meanings, a way to obtain an independent form. An excellent example of this was the phenomenon we called in the 1960s the “Polish poster school”, consisting of artists using metaphor as an escape route in a time and place that was marked by ideological enslavement. The intellectual and impressionistic quality of the poster back then lay in this relationship between the visual idea or pictorial “point of departure” and the accompanying slogan, and that still holds true today. This is because a good poster is by nature contrary, rambunctious, ambiguous and in this sense independent of the function that it is supposed to fulfil. Therefore, we have an interesting conflict between the slogan and the artistic form – the artist who, as mediator, can find a solution to this problem, generally becomes “a great poster designer”. Thus the term “independent” becomes both a slogan of historical reminiscence and an encouragement for artists to undertake the difficult task of telling us “everything” by means of an individual image, one that will outlast the temporary nature of its content and remain a sign recognized by viewers from different parts of the world. In this sense we are seeing another side to the current, 26th edition of the International Poster Biennale in Warsaw – as a competition for ideas concerning an independent form, in other words tackling the most important task of artistic existence.

The 26th International Poster Biennale in Warsaw
We announced the OPEN THEMATIC COMPETITION to mark 2018 being the 100th anniversary of Poland regaining its independence and similar anniversaries in other countries of the region. 1918 saw the independence aspirations of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia being fulfilled, the creation of a bi-national independent state – Czechoslovakia – being proclaimed, and a year earlier the establishment of Finland. This competition aims to evoke such values as independence, freedom, community, community and cultural identity, nationhood, brotherhood/solidarity, and tolerance. We were inspired by the past, but on the global scale this theme remains a current one. Posters have already more than once proved effective in the struggle for higher goals! Out of the 848 entries submitted for the thematic competition, 84 posters were admitted (by pre-selection) for the exhibition and catalogue. The winners will be announced on June 9th 2018 during the inauguration of the 26th International Poster Biennale in Warsaw at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw.
They will be selected from among the following:

Cathrine Zask (France)
(b. 1961) – graphic designer, typographer, writer, artist, as multifaceted as the building blocks of her visual language. A graduate from the Paris ESAG in 1984, she established her independent practice in 1985. Catherine Zask is one of the leading figures in contemporary French graphic design. She works with cultural institutions and private companies, creating their visual identity right down to specific aspects of their communication, mainly on the basis of long-term collaboration. Her self-initiated projects are closely connected with her commissioned work. In 1993–94, she was a fellow of the Académie de France in Rome (Villa Medici), where she created Alfabetempo, an experimental alphabet based on deconstructing the beats of letter strokes. This work is a continuation of the research she began ten years earlier on lettering, tracing and signs. Doodles, X-Rays of Thoughts, Sismozask, Cousu-Zask, Happy Dots, Splashes… are ongoing projects that combine drawings, texts, films and photos. Zask’s posters exude a fluid elegance and expressive style of both word and letter that are constructs of typographic forms converted into written symbols. The characteristics distinguishing her work are original typographic forms and text configurations. She teaches and lectures in France and abroad. She has had solo exhibitions, winning several awards, including in 2002 the Grand Prix at the 20th International Biennale of Graphic Design in Brno. In 2010, the French Ministry of Culture awarded her the Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et Lettres medal. She is a member of the Alliance Graphique Internationale (AGI).

The Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw – the main organizer of the 26th International Poster Biennale in Warsaw
The 26th International Poster Biennale in Warsaw continues the best traditions of the event and is returning to that place – The Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw – in whose orbit a vital and original idea was formed. The idea of reviewing global achievements in the field of poster design.

The Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw In 1766, Marcello Bacciarelli, an Italian painter working at the court of the Polish king Stanisław August Poniatowski, prepared at his majesty’s request a design for an Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. Although this never came to fruition, the role of art school began to be fulfilled by this painter’s own studio, established that same year at the Royal Castle in Warsaw, the so-called Royal Painting Studio. The history of higher artistic education in Warsaw may be said to date from that time. In 1816, the Royal University of Warsaw was established, including a Department of Fine Arts, with Bacciarelli being appointed its Honorary Dean. All this took place against the background of Poland’s tragic fate – as a nation and a state – of partitions, uprisings and struggle. The Academy, in the institutional shape as we now know it, combines the traditions of the Warsaw School of Fine Arts (founded in 1904) and the Municipal School of Decorative Arts and Painting (founded in 1920, but with roots dating back to 1844). Its history is usually considered to date back to 1904, although it was only awarded the status of Academy in 1932. Today it is one of the largest art schools in Poland; in total some 1,600 full-time and external students are admitted. It educates artists, designers, art conservators and art historians in the following faculties: Painting, Sculpture, Media Art, Graphic Arts, Interior Design, Stage Design, Design, Conservation and Restoration of Works of Art, and Management of Visual Culture.

The 26th International Poster Biennale in Warsaw
Students at the Academy specialize in easel and mural painting in and beyond the conventional sense, drawing and illustration, traditional sculpture encompassing the full spectrum of studios and scales (including medals). They also specialize in the building of structures / installations and the undertaking of various other activities or spatial interventions that also continually redefine sculpture’s meaning and place. And moreover, the space in which art can exist at all is redefined. Photography (experimental and social) and video arts make up another, performative specialization. Visual language is created and reworked – its messages, codes and channels, as well as intermedia communication, image recording formulas, animation of images and the staging of works (not necessarily as a conventional narrative). Contemporary visual culture, and even more so – audio-visual culture are conferred a certain tone. Sets are designed for theatre (including puppet theatre), opera, film and television. Another field is stage costume, and fashion along with artistic and experimental fabrics. There are graphic design and printmaking studios. Design encompasses products – utility items, industrial designs - interiors, exhibitions and visual communication. The cultural / artistic heritage is protected by means of scientific and technical conservation procedures and a deeper awareness of this field is instilled through a specially profiled theoretical education and art history studies. All of this is socially engaged, supported by an anthropological perspective and sensitive to the latest phenomena – and most importantly, set in a place where art is created. The range of issues explored and special subjects offered at the Academy – and consequently the diversity of future career paths of graduates – is enormous. Their creative education is guided by openness – their instruction taking place in the conventions of multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches, multimedia and intermedia. In terms of its programme, the Academy is situated between tradition and experiment, innovation of ideas and technological developments – the classic and the modern. Not without reason the exhibition organized to mark the Academy’s 100th anniversary (Zachęta – the National Gallery of Art, 17.09 – 24.10.2004) was entitled “Duty and Rebellion”. What has distinguished the school from the very beginning is the equal treatment of “pure” and “applied” art – so that the two may remain in dialogue and permeate each other. Art may enjoy the privilege of autonomy and elitism, but – especially in the modern world – art is communication! Of the senses, facts, emotions and forms... Our intention is for students to achieve a high degree of efficiency in various fields; to not only create their own works of art or designs, but to also shape their role in contemporary reality and interact with it. Apart from undergraduate and graduate studies, the Academy conducts post-graduate and doctoral studies. Within its framework there is the Intercollegiate Institute of Artworks Conservation and Restoration, the Public Space Research Institute and Salon Akademii, the highly renowned contemporary art gallery, founded and headed by Professor Paweł Nowak – the venue for the exhibitions of the 26th Biennale. The Academy conducts didactic, artistic, design, research, and research service activities, along with art research and research in support of art and science,

as well as its publishing and exhibition activities and the dissemination of artistic culture; it is both a thriving university and a cultural institution with a broader reach than an academic or artistic community. It is an open and opinion-forming Academy! The school prides itself on its excellent teaching staff composed of highly valued artists and designers and is the alma mater of many eminent graduates, initiators of new artistic phenomena, who are also of international renown. Importantly, the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw has played a significant role in the development of Polish poster art, and most of the representatives of the famous “Polish poster school” are or have been its lecturers and graduates! The organizer of the 26th Biennale is the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw and – understandably – the greatest effort in its organization is being made by the Faculty of Graphic Arts. It is the Warsaw Academy’s largest and most dynamically developing department. With a total of 430 students (full-time and external: those attending evening classes and extramural studies), it can boast some 80 lecturers, who are assisted by over 30 doctoral students. It offers both artistic and specialist courses based on a substantial foundation in the arts and theoretical subjects. This education includes such majors as: printmaking, visual communication, book design, illustration, poster design, and multimedia. The department also offers classes in the design of digital publications, magazines, computer games, typefaces and typography. At the initiative of the Faculty of Graphic Arts, in 1994 the Academy awarded its first honorary doctorate to the Japanese graphic designer, Yūsaku Kamekura. Subsequent laureates have included Umberto Eco (1996), Andrzej Wajda (2000), Boris Voznickij (2004) and Ryszard Horowitz (2010). Another of the department’s valuable initiatives was the revival of outmoded graphic arts professions, such as typesetter and lithographer.

The 26th International Poster Biennale in Warsaw
The Poster Museum in Wilanów A branch of the National Museum in Warsaw
The Poster Museum in Wilanów is the first, pioneering museum in the world focusing exclusively on poster art. It began operations on 4 June 1968. From that moment on, its efforts to document, archive, present and disseminate the ephemeral art of the poster have continued unabated. In order to preserve the right of posters to be treated as works of art, and thus museum exhibits, the Poster Museum established its own scientific studio from – importantly – the ground up, and formulated rules governing their conservation. Sources of access to examples of such works were determined and rules were laid down for maintaining inventories and documentation – similar to those applied for etchings. Methods for storage of the collection owed much to the experience of the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. The initiator and promoter of these operations was the art historian and curator Janina Fijałkowska.

The activities of the Poster Museum in Wilanów were in their time testimony to the improvements in the way public collections were maintained. They were also an expression of the aspirations of modern historic study, directing attention to the peripheries of so-deemed high culture – in other words, towards mass culture – and thus reassessing the value of street art. This sanctioned the leading role of the poster as a medium of communication in the relatively new civilization of the global village. The amassing of texts on material culture – which at virtually the same time functioned in the public domain and shaped the iconosphere – enabled an immediate reset of the dynamically changing field of visual culture. And consequently, a restructuring of the cultural-civilizational or socio-political context. The Museum’s inauguration coincided with the second edition of the International Poster Biennale in Warsaw. The functioning of the

The 26th International Poster Biennale in Warsaw
Poster Museum in Wilanów in close association with the Biennale was intended to help in the formation of a collection of the foreign posters exhibited during this event – and so fulfil the task of its archivists (with the Museum putting on exhibitions of works by each Biennale’s award winners, and later also its jurors). This made it possible to create a representative collection of foreign posters, which can be considered unique in the world, currently containing over 25,000 titles. Among their authors are: Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Jules Chéret, Eugène Grasset, Alfons Mucha and Leonetto Cappiello. It should be emphasized that from the very beginning, the Poster Museum’s raison d’être was to cultivate the internationally acclaimed artistic phenomenon that was the “Polish poster school”, which reached the apogee of its recognition and popularity in the mid-1960s. It is here that its traditions and achievements are subjected to revision and reinterpretation. With the passing of time, the concept itself is also verified. The Polish poster collection currently numbers over 36,000 titles. The collection is to a large extent complete and allows for various configurations of the artefacts, depending on the research perspectives. The overriding criterion applied in profiling this collection is artistic value, more so than the (otherwise important) criterion of its value as a testament to a past era. The Polish poster collection includes works by such great artists as Stanisław Wyspiański, Józef Mehoffer, Wojciech Kossak, Jan Styka and Zofia Stryjeńska. An important part of this collection are the works of those artists associated with the “Polish poster school”, such as Henryk Tomaszewski, Józef Mroszczak, Jan Lenica, Roman Cieślewicz, Wojciech Fangor, Wojciech Zamecznik, Wiktor Górka, Hubert Hilscher, Maciej Urbaniec, Eryk Lipiński, Leszek Hołdanowicz, Jan Młodożeniec, Rosław Szaybo, Franciszek Starowieyski, Waldemar Świerzy, Marek Mosiński, Maciej Hibner and Mieczysław Wasilewski. The collection has been of course successively augmented with the works of subsequent generations, beginning with those whose debut took place in the 1970s – the direct successors of the “school”. These included: Lech Majewski, Andrzej Pągowski, Rafał Olbiński, Eugeniusz Skorwider, Stasys Eidrigevicius, Jan Sawka, Roman Kalarus, Eugeniusz Get-Stankiewicz, Władysław Pluta, Mieczysław Górowski, Wiesław Wałkuski and Jan Jaromir Aleksiun. For years, the poster was considered the best export product among the Polish visual arts. Hence the more than 300 spectacular exhibitions and accompanying publications based on the Poster Museum’s resources in renowned museums, galleries, public institutions and diplomatic posts on almost all continents. Of these, certainly worth mentioning are the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Musée des Arts Décoratives and the Musée de l’Affiche, along with the Musée d’Histoire Contemporaine in Paris, the Moravská Gallery in Brno, the Műcsarnok in Budapest, the National Gallery of Slovenia in Bratislava, the Deutsches Plakatmuseum in Essen, Julistemuseo in Lahti, the Museum of Modern Art in Toyama, the Musashino Art University and the Ginza Graphic Gallery in Tokyo, the Library of Congress in Washington, the Danish Poster Museum in Aarhus, the National Museum of Art of Romania in Bucharest, the Museum of Illustration and Modernity in Valencia, the National Museum in

Copenhagen, the Deutsches Historisches Museum in Berlin, and Maison du Livre et de l`Affiche in Chaumont. This list is impressive and by no means complete. For its pioneering work in disseminating poster art, in 1983 the Museum was awarded the Ernst Litfass honorary medal named after the designer of the traditional advertising column – awarded by Düsseldorf’s Fachverband Aussenwerbung (Outdoor Advertising Trade Association). The Poster Museum is housed in the seventeenth-century royal residence of Jan III Sobieski – a palace and gardens complex in Wilanów, on the site of the palace’s former riding school, designed by the architect Franciszek Maria Lanci. The museum building, designed by the architects Jacek K. Cydzik and Barbara Kossuth, is one of the most representative examples of Polish modernism, but one that constitutes an original synthesis of the modern and historic form, as the architects decided to retain its classical façade. One may venture to say that in a sense they anticipated the phenomenon we call postmodernism. This, the world’s first poster museum – which was perhaps the first building in post-war Poland (more precisely in the Polish People’s Republic – 1952-1989) to be built for the housing of a museum – hosted the world’s first International Poster Biennale in the years 1994-2016. In 2018, the Poster Museum in Wilanów celebrates its 50th anniversary and for the occasion it is presenting a special exhibition entitled “1968”, this being a direct reference to the date of the Poster Museum’s inauguration. 1968 – as the most rebellious year of the sixties – is a symbol of that decade, in which all the significant and fateful social changes of the second half of the twentieth century were focused. The artistic phenomena, countercultural manifestations and acts of political insubordination (student revolts, but also a wave of terrorism) taking place at that time lent unprecedented dynamics to the process of restructuring modern society’s awareness, the effects of which are still being felt to this day. The “1968” exhibition shows these events by means of various media and artefacts of visual communication, in which the Polish and foreign posters from the collection maintained by the Poster Museum in Wilanów play a major role. An essential complement to this reconstruction of the visual landscape of 1968 is a presentation of graphic design and advertising – designs for LP covers, books and magazines – and selected projects in the field of industrial design and fashion. The exhibition is augmented by a presentation of documentary photography and photojournalism in the form of large-format prints, which – consistent with the exhibition’s spatial layout – constitutes a kind of narrative accompaniment. An integral part of the exhibition is a multimedia presentation of archival materials such as newsreels and documentaries, radio programmes and recordings of the cult music of that era. (Exhibition dates: June 9 – September 31, 2018)

CONFERENCE OF THE 26TH INTERNATIONAL POSTER BIENNALE June 9 and 10, 10:00–13:00 and 15:00–17:00 “More Over – concerning graphic-design-related grassroots activities”, coordinated by: Mateusz Machalski and Borys Kosmynka, Auditorium of the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, Wybrzeże Kościuszkowskie 37/39; admission free The way the work of designers changes along with technological developments and transformations in the field of communication. Ken Garland and Victor Papanek have stressed that design is not just about fulfilling commercial orders, and that designers have a mission involving socially / environmentally committed grassroots activities. They were not alone in this opinion. However, at the end of the 20th and beginning of the 21st centuries, this way of thinking, as well as the work model associated with mission, became sidetracked. After a dozen or so years of delight over the possibilities offered by new display methods, the Internet and animation, the traditional studio is returning to favor. Robert Bringhurst’s assumptions are being used in website design, and young designers are increasingly willing to learn calligraphy, work in typesetting studios and look into other techniques to increase their design resources. Together, this consists in building a modern identity for visual culture. At the “More Over” conference, we will be listening to graphic designers who undertake various types of grassroots activities – those that are socially committed and those restoring local cultural contexts and traditional crafts to design. June 10, 11:00–13:00 – “Paint your own poster – my Poland” – fun and a competition for children; on this day, a special Biennale Television Studio organized by Polish Television’s 3rd Program will be broadcasting from the grounds of the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, Krakowskie Przedmieście 5
