How would you describe yourself as a photographer? My primary way of expressing myself through photography is by hand-coloring black and white photographs. In the last couple of years I started teaching that technique. Sharing my passion with other people is something I love to do! I am not what I consider a “technical” photographer. Equipment is not as important to me as it is with some photographers. I only recently embraced (and now love) digital photography. “Photo Artist” seems a better way to describe me.

I started to take photography classes when my children were young. I fell in love with black and white photography, even going as far as to turn one of my bathrooms into a darkroom. This passion continued to surface when I went back to school to finish up my accounting degree so I could become a CPA. I took another photography class while at California State University Sacramento and made the decision to abandon the idea of ever becoming an accountant, quit school and took up photography full time. That was 17 years ago. How does photography define you? Photography is my passion and has helped get me through some difficult periods in my life. I can’t imagine what my life would be like if I wasn’t a photographer. It brings me joy. Continuation On The Next Page >

“Any scene that has the potential to evoke curiousity, and leave the viewer feeling calm and peaceful.” Who are the photographers that you admire? Can you name a few of their works and why their works inspire you? When I first started hand-coloring, I found the work of Jill Enfield and Thea Schrack very inspiring. There is an image that Jill Enfield made that I can’t find the name of - it’s an old building with open windows and curtains flowing out. She hand-colored the building using blues and oranges and I just loved the effect. I love Thea Schrack’s images of San Francisco and again, her use of hand-coloring really excited me and made me want to learn as much as I could about the process. Favorite subject to shoot. Any scene that has the potential to evoke curiosity, and leave the viewer feeling calm and peaceful. Your dream project as a photographer I am working on it right now - a book of floral images. “I don’t just capture

What led you to become a photographer? What is the story behind it? I started to work as an Art Director in a small advertising agency and dealt with different types of clientele where marketing collaterals are met which required a certain amount of photoshoots. There were times that I voluntarily manned the shoots since photography was a part of my curriculum. I resorted to do it as a challenge to develop my skills. To my surprise, I found it relaxing and gratifying. I was doing food and lifestyle photography for restaurants and real estate companies then. Fortunately, the results of my works were welcomed with flattering appreciation. I became acquainted and was able to build good relations with our clients. Apparently, those opportunities paved the way for me to take photography seriously. I resigned from work to become a full time freelance Art Director/ Graphic Designer / Photographer. Luckily, I was able to get the referrals from our clients and some of them became my very own clients. It seemed like I was off to a good start. I then ventured to do fashion photography, I got inspired by fashion magazines and tried to come up with interesting ideas that can make something out of nothing or to make ordinary extraordinary. I believe that my previous job was a good training ground for me. I am still doing food and lifestyle photography and have been making good progress in doing fashion photography. How does photography define you? My photography is my way of self expression and a big part of my life. Through it, I was able to live my fantasies and imagination.

Have a knack for finding a slightly different take on what might be mundane shots. I love black and white for my personal work. What led you to become a photographer? What is the story behind it? I was in college and bought a 35mm camera and took a photography class to learn how to use it fell in love and never looked back! Most memorable project / assignment. Shooting and printing traditionally 200+ 16x20 b/w sepia toned images for the walls of a luxury hotel in South Carolina, the Sanctuary. Favorite subject to shoot. People Your dream project as a photographer More jobs like the job mentioned above except that would involve using people in the images. And still having the creative freedom I had on that one.

While all these may be true, there is also a downside of this very glamorous and lavish lifestyle.

She continues her quest in becoming bigger and better in her craft particularly in the world of modeling. Kristina Akheeva who migrated in Australia at the age of 7 was born in Khabarovsk, Russia. actress. She was approached by several photographers while studying acting in Australia. She soon received a call from Singapore to try out modeling. After her successful modeling stint in Singapore, she got back to Australia and decided to commit herself to the world of modeling To date, Kristina has been contracted all across Asia where she jet sets between Singapore, India, Philippines, China, and Korea. Her work has allowed her to be photographed by some of Asia’s best photographers as well as starring in several high profile commercials. However I’ve also recently shot a music video in GOA where I got to ride jet skis, relax on a yacht, and laze around by a pool while eating deliciously beautiful food right on the beach...this was all part of the shot so it definitely gets the ‘best’ tag. Also a few years ago I shot at Bintan island Indonesia. I got spoilt rotten, definitely didn’t feel like work (grins).

How would you describe yourself as a person? I am a true Scorpion. With new people I can be quiet, shy and reserved; but once I’m comfortable - and only with a select few, I really open up and appreciate deeper and more meaningful relationships. I prefer one or two really close friends than big groups of friends. I can get very passionate and I always have a strong determination to achieve; whether it is in for my profession or personal growth. It’s impossible for me not to be doing, planning, organizing, and contemplating.

Who are you as a model? I have a clear vision of where I want to be and what I want to achieve. Because I am considered quite short in the modeling world (5’7”) I’ve had to work extra hard to prove myself. I have taught myself to become a performer rather then just a model. Knowing how to act and move your body is very important. I don’t want to limit myself in the work that I do.

Aside from modeling…. I’m really into health and natural healing. I have researched naturopathy and did a reiki course; spent time in a meditation ashram. I am also in the process of launching my own fashion label which is very exciting for me.

What keeps you busy? Mostly work. In my spare time I’m busy organizing and planning future business ventures, travelling, reading, spending time with my friends and loved ones and of course shopping! (Smiles)

As a model, what image do you like projecting to your public? Being quite short for a model (5’7”) means I still rub my eyes when I see myself in magazines, billboards or on television. It’s nice to show people that you don’t have to be a 6 foot Glamazon to succeed in this industry. With enough passion and determination anything is possible.

What are your thoughts when it comes to describing a model with substance? A model who doesn’t get completely caught up in the material side of it all especially when shooting beautiful clothes, jet setting around the world and getting invited to glamorous parties - it is very easy to get caught up. But if you can do all that and still stay grounded, humble and balanced then that shows real substance. End >

What is your personal style when you are not modeling? I like comfortable clothes that are still stylish. Even if your clothes are amazing, you cannot feel confident if you are not comfortable in them.

What beauty product best describes you?

I would not be satisfied following anyone else’s path except for my own. There are many artists that I respect and look up to, but I wouldn’t want to be them. I just want to learn from them.

Do you have any tattoos? If so, what are these and what does it mean to you? What about piercings? How many and where? No tattoos, only ears pierced.

Toner. As I live in Asia now, I am constantly in humid conditions. During the day I only use a toner to keep myself shine free. At night I moisturize.

What song best describes your life now?

What is your most memorable moment? Backpacking around Asia for 3 months in 2007 with only $3000 in my pocket! That was an experience!

When I was a VJ we used to tape once a week only for QTV Channel 11; sometimes for GMA 7 and TV guestings. As we live far from Makati where all d castings agencies are, I usually do 3-4 castings to maximize my day, my gas and makeup. So if I didn’t see much my daughter that day, I make it a point that the next day I take her to the zoo; the mall or we do handicrafts at home after her class. I enrolled her before in a dancing school a few months as I observed she had good rhythm. She loves to sing and dance like Lady Gaga – the schedule for that is Saturday and Sunday 9 - 12nn with breaks in between. Movie offers don’t come that often so it’s quite exceptional that I was in 4 indie films. There are different shooting schedules for each time (once a week or twice for a month or 2). I can’t accept lead roles, it is more on heavy acting, and is very time consuming, which means less time for my family. I also shot for Discovery Channel twice.

As a wife w/ my husband and I spend a lot of time together watching movies in the theaters/at home at night and on a week day. Then on weekends we go to Tagaytay or in the mall; eat out or go out of town. Before we had Armelle we were addicted to scuba diving in Anilao every weekend.

How can you be a good mother despite having a hectic schedule? Set priorities. Money can never buy back the growing stages of your kid. I missed a lot of work when we left one month for our USA and Canada holiday. I just tell myself, it’s just work - I have to enjoy my family too. Work will always be there when I get back. Exclusive Interview w/ Valerie Bariou What do you love doing with Armelle? Do you plan on having more children soon? What do you normally do as a family? One is good for the meantime. We want to have one more - hopefully a boy this time. We just want to give Armelle all the attention she needs as she is growing up. We also love stimulating, motivating and challenging her. She is also the first grand daughter in the family. I was surprised one evening when she wanted to surprise me by counting in French. Every night before sleeping I teach her French like “goodnight…sleep tight… wake up bright in the morning light” as well as singing in French.

What do you think is the greatest gift you can give your children? Love is very important. I believe it will give her all the confidence she needs to overcome all the challenges she will face in her life even if we are not here anymore. We want her to become an independent and strong little girl. We are very blessed to have a loving, healthy and very entertaining daughter. She likes to choose her clothes and explain her thoughts, frustrations and needs. People often tell us that she’s mature for her age. She can also distinguish what’s good from bad.

My husband and I work hard for her future (studies, travel etc.) and also for her inheritance. So she will be left with something when we pass on. We want to make sure that she is safe and financially secure.

What is the best thing about being a mother, wife and a model? When I was a new mom, I felt so insecure and very vulnerable mentally. This was because I was very thin before my body changed. My hips became wider and I was heavier. Being surrounded by skinny models I felt so conscious - but breastfeeding helped a lot. I really recommend new moms to breastfeed for as long as they can. They can also pump and store the milk and even freeze it. Armelle had good immunity. Being a mom makes you feel complete. I always look forward going home to my daughter and my husband of course. We were leaving that Saturday when I was just offered to shoot for a magazine. Too bad this situation happens so many times like for fashion week, TVC shoots, etc. Continuation On The Next Page >

Exclusive Interview w/ Valerie Bariou Being a model helped a lot in keeping me fit since I am always on the go. It also helped me mentally especially when it came to my self esteem. People around you would always give you lots of compliments during shoots. As a model, one of the best perks is getting to meet a lot of creative people and celebrities; as well as being able to go to the best places.

You look really good. How did you get back in-shape and lose all the baby fat? Any tips or secrets that you can share? Honestly, I am not the gym kind of person. I think that by being a hands-on-mom helped a lot - as well as breastfeeding, and maybe the lack of sleep (laughs). After eating healthy during my pregnancy, I was drawn to eating junk food right after. I kinda cheated a bit by trying out mesotherapy; radio frequency and home hard massages twice a week to at least to burn the fats. It took me about a year to get back in shape.

What was the biggest change that happened to your career once you got married and had a kid? When I met Onemig (husband), he wanted to have a baby right away. We felt we were meant for each other. I was quite hesitant at first as I was worried that I wouldn’t get booked anymore after giving birth. We went against the tradition by getting married after (having a baby). We just wanted to make sure we were good parents and that it would work out fine. It was only last Christmas that we got civilly married. It doesn’t change anything. I think it was better. It made us independent just in case our relationship didn’t work out. When I was a few months pregnant, I was still shooting for magazines, catalogs and TVCs. Exclusive Interview w/ Valerie Bariou was an abrupt change in my sizes from project to project (the period of time change in dress size was a month). I just told them I ate a lot. Haha. Since my husband is a local celebrity, people quickly found out that we got married. Every time I went to a casting, I use his last name so I was asked if I was related to Onemig. I answer yes – he’s my hubby (smiles). The only challenge is that it is more difficult to get roles as a yuppy now that I’m married and a mom.

What advice can you give to young mothers who are juggling to have a career and still be a good mom? Everyone’s different but I think what’s important is to know your priorities in life and to know your goals – whether it’s being a full time model/mom or a part time model/mom/ entrepreneur. I know I’m a better mom when I have a career. I don’t think that I would have as much quality time with Armelle being a fulltime mom.

I’m not as patient as I should be, but I learn and improve every day. I listen a lot to my instincts and also note down the needs of my husband and daughter. I make sure I explain every thing such as the reasons why I’m working, etc. Both my husband and daughter are very understanding.

Apart from being an actress, host and model, you are also an entrepreneur. How did you get into designing jewelry? Since you sell online, maybe you can give us your website so we can check it out. I got my creative side from my mom. As she does “ekebana” flower arrangements; painting on stones/plates, cooking, writing, sewing, African beadwork designs for the house, etc. At first, I studied business management and then switched to fashion and pattern design in Paris. When I was a little girl, I would draw dresses, shoes and princess jewelry – and then when I made my own money, I decided to make those jewelries. It was quite expensive and very addicting. Exclusive Interview w/ Valerie Bariou I made, and then some friends of my mom wanted to buy them from me. So that’s how I made it into a business.

Aside from that, you are a perfume maker? How did you get into that one? There was point in my life that I was temporarily given some free time, so I decided to venture into another type of career. Some models turn into photographers, others become stylists, makeup artists, etc. I on the other hand tried investing in a Spa and then tried to have a TV production house, and then a casting agency. I also tried to market my grandma’s organic fruit vinegar. In the end, I ended up developing my own jewelry design, as well as making a perfume line – since I am, after all half French and my hometown is where all the perfumes come from. (grins widely).

Aside from your mom, where else do you think did your creativity stem from? From travelling and being exposed to different culture – especially since I am half Asian and half European.

What motto do you live by? “Carpe Diem” - Enjoy each day as if it were the last. Don’t take people and things for granted. Always be thankful and appreciate what you already have. Don’t go with the flow – instead, follow your dreams in a reasonable way. Respect yourself before respecting others. Follow your instincts.

What are the greatest lessons in life that you would love to share or teach to your children? It doesn’t matter if you’re rich or poor. We are all human beings. Material things are temporary even if we enjoy them a lot. I have rich and poor friends, and I learn from both. I lived 6 years in Africa, 2 years in Shanghai, Oman and Dubai; a couple of years in France and in the Philippines. Are you a part of any organization? I used to b part of OPTA promoting the Organic lifestyle and also Breastfeeding w/ LATCH

Do you do any volunteer work? I helped w/ the telethon on GMA during the disaster floods, I also distribute food to the homeless and toys to street kids during Christmas holidays

What are your passions? Travelling (Brunei, France, Nigeria, Dubai, Oman, Myanmar, Shanghai etc), Food/ Dining, Fashion, Design, Photography (travel)..
