he visibility of women in the street art movement is pretty rare so when a woman arises to the top, you cannot help but be impressed with her skills and gift as a graffiti artist. Now although Miss Bugs is made up of a duo “Miss” – girl “Bugs” – boy; as a team, they are identified by their wielding silk-screens and collages which create relevant pop images that stimulate your imagination. With a signature style of blending distorted silhouettes of the female form, Miss Bugs showcases the need to represent women in the street art scene dominated by men. Works of Miss Bugs depict stories that reflect ideas or certain beliefs while making use of angels, cartoon characters, Frankenstein’s monster, pornographic women, religion, Sharbat Gula (the Afghan Pushtini girl) and superheroes as staples for their art.

eing a renowned street artist for his guerrilla art campaigns, Obey is celebrated for the slogan “Obey” with the face of pro wrestler Andre the Giant. He became even more famous thanks to his “Hope” poster which consists of Barack Obama’s face during the height of the US elections - solidifying his position as being one of America’s greatest street artists. Stating that his works are “graphic art with social and political messages,” Obey’s graphic works combines stenciling, screen printing and collages. He’s popularity was initiated when he became a newsworthy item through his numerous arrests - due to his art being adorned on public spaces. With works being commissioned by music’s top artists such as The Black-Eyed Peas, to big brand names like Pepsi and Showtime, this helped catapult Obey to mainstream consciousness while helping elevate urban artistry.

I am always thinking of ways to alter my mentality to think differently. I try to intervene existing ideas to fit my aspirations and change the ways things are usually perceived. I am no different as a person and as an artist. What inspired you to become a graffiti artist and why choose this particular medium? When I started out in my teens, I found graffiti to be the only art form that connects to me as it did to most street kids. There wasn’t much purpose involved, except developing a personal style, and to me it parallels the idea of discovering the self; finding out what colors, shapes and what “nots” really mean and how it sort of describes what you are. Compared to other mediums, I was able to execute my ideas faster through graffiti. I honestly have very little patience and I’d like to make my ideas physically visible ASAP; so I was attracted to the quick nature of the medium.

Who has touched your life the most as an individual and as an artist? And who are your influences when it comes to your craft? My late mother. She was a crafty person herself and was always creating decorative things for the house - croquet flower pot hangers, origami, etc. She first taught me how to draw by tracing over things and introduced me to DIY culture of creating/manipulating things yourself to fit your ideas and preferences. What emotions inspire you to create? Boredom and mundanity. I hate routine. Every time I find myself going towards the single track mind on my journey, I’d always look for a detour of some sort as an escape.

What is your background in graffiti and what is your signature style? How were you able to develop your skills over the years? I was skateboarding in my teens. It was through this urban sport that I met graffiti. I went through different phases of styles according to my influences throughout the years. My early years as a writer, I painted really straight lines which I named ‘stiffies.’ I was in technical school back then and I learnt to draw straight lines without using rulers or any aid. Then as I progressed further and went through art school my style gradually got softer. It sort of turns into organic forms and I guess it’s still there now whenever I paint letter styles. With regards to the previous question, I’ve found a new love for stencil graffiti and I’ve been at it for a couple of years. I can see myself sticking to this style for much longer.

Where did you create your most prized art work as a graffiti artist or give a specific place and the reason why want to immortalize your masterpiece there. Sadly none of my pieces have survived more than 3 years to even title them as immortals. I’d be lucky to have my piece survive longer than 3 months. Or maybe I chose the wrong spots. With ephemerality in mind, my pieces are now focused on the fact that graffiti in general, or any kind of street art, is temporary, and one of the only ways to immortalize them is through photography. So I can say now my prized works are located on some of the nicest shadows I’ve come across in town. What is your take on today’s graffiti scene? I’m very happy to see a great mix of styles and methods of execution as compared to when I first started out. Plus it’s not just about styles and abstraction anymore. These artists are getting better technically and mentally that their pieces really reach out to the audience with its accompanying concepts and the messages that they’re trying to send across. Definitely a medium of communication that should not be taken for granted.

How can you take the art of graffiti to the next level? By having a better concept really helps to elevate the pieces intellectually. Graffiti is known to be an effective tool of communication to the masses. What other interests do you have apart from graffiti? I like to customize my belongings; I paint my own bike, sneakers, etc. I also collect G-Shock watches. How would your life change if you were no longer allowed to create art?

To be able to promote graffiti awareness - since the beginning to where it’s at now; and be appreciated by the masses by keeping the scene alive even though its tough at times. Proudest accomplishment - to receive an award by the Senior Minister for painting graffiti (laughs). What kind of experience do you want your audience to gain from viewing your art work? I’d like them to open their minds to possibilities, and not be bound by restrictions. Use those restrictions to fuel their inspirations and keep pushing their limits in whatever they do, be it life or art. Some of the greatest art pieces are created from the greatest sanctions.

For me I love mature and old neighborhoods; those with peeling paint and old walls. There’s just so much character and history that inspires me to contribute and be creative on these places as compared to dull new concrete partitions.

As an artist, she has statement-making pieces that voices issues regarding the world that we live in. With nature-based works like her Weedrobes series, you can’t help but be drawn to it and wonder how she comes up with her ideas and designs which are simply fascinating. Materials for her garments are composed of plants – in which some are considered to be invasive. Other materials used would be twigs, thorns, leaves, hemp thread, flowers and berries.

Dextras’ Weedrobe creations evidently display her gift in capturing the beauty of nature while depicting a degree of social consciousness that is highly impressive and thought provoking. Although her nature-based art works are short-lived, the impact it brings provides its purpose for being created. The Weedrobe collection illustrates the life cycle behind the fashion industry and encourages you to see beyond fashion’s glamorous exterior while recognizing its ramifications to our environment and society as a whole.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;The intention of the Weedrobes series is to engage the public on several levels: through street interventions, garden settings and gallery exhibitions. Each new piece begins as a wearable sculpture constructed from local and renewable plant materials. It is then photographed with a model in a landscaped urban setting emphasizing the impact of humans on the natural environment. The third stage consists of a public intervention in a shopping area where the garment wearer engages with passersby regarding issues of disposable consumer goods. The garment/sculpture is later installed in a garden or park setting and left to decompose over time.â&#x20AC;?

I am an environmental artist who creates sculptures with ephemeral materials such as leaves in the summer and ice in the winter. I work with nature because it is a good example of how change is the natural order of things and so I hope my art inspires people to embrace change in all aspects of their lives. I have been artistic since day one, always drawing and putting on shows. I finally gave in to my destiny in my twenties and went to art school.

Who is NICOLE DEXTRAS as an environmental artist and what inspired you to become one?

Environmental Art What is your background in the arts and how have you evolved as an artist? I first went to the Kootenay School of Art and studied graphic design because I was encouraged to go into something that would lead to a job later. I was not satisfied with that and so I attended Emily Carr University a few years later. What I learned at art school was how to dedicate oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s life to art by giving it your all. After graduation, I got my first studio and spent many years experimenting with materials such as handmade paper and alternative photography.

What inspires you to create your art works? Can you explain your creative process in producing your works? The best way to be creative is to do the work. I would go into the studio even if I was not inspired. I would just putter around and sure enough, at some point, ideas would begin to take shape. I also get many of my concepts in the morning - between sleep and waking, and for that reason I do not use an alarm clock.

“My current art practice is rooted in the environmental art movement. It is based on the theories of seminal artists such as Joseph Beuys’ notion of “infiltration”, which integrates art and social change, as well as Robert Smithson’s “nonsite” theory, which challenged the parameters of the conventional gallery setting. The Weedrobes Project can be positioned as a hybrid of Environmental Art within a Socially Engaged Practice because of its relation to ecology, culture and eco-feminism. In addition, taking these sculptures to the streets is a form of reclaiming of the body as a public site. In this respect, Weedrobes draws on a tradition of art which focuses on the garment as a as an extension of the body in works such as Jana Sterbak’s Flesh Dress and Beverly Semmes’ s culptural garments.”

“My personal interest in the fashion industry stems from growing up in my mother’s ladies-clothing store where I learned how to discern quality manufacturing and the importance of shopping local. In my teens, I witnessed the poor working conditions in garment factories and the effects of chemicals used in treating fabrics, while working in a nonunion sweatshop. Years later, as a costume designer, I was fascinated by the notion of psychological transference into clothing and this informed much of my early artworks.”

My influences are very eclectic, from the art of Robert Smithson, the fashion of Alexander McQueen, the photography of Cindy Sherman, the music of Jean Le Loup and old black and white films.

Who are your influences or the people that you look up to?

Environmental Art What is your philosophy about “environmental art” and about “art as a business”? How have you handled the business side of being an artist? Environmental art is a new and evolving genre of art based on the concept of taking art out of the pristine gallery by constructing and showing it in outdoor settings. This allows for a direct engagement with the public and works to break down the narrow elitism of the gallery system.

Unfortunately the gallery system still reins supreme in the art world and so I also exhibit photographs of my ephemeral works. This works for me because I am also a photographer but it means I have to work twice as hard. I have not made much money from the sale of my photos so far and I have supported myself over the years by doing all sorts of jobs that enable my artistic talents, from teaching, to sign painting. If you could teach something to an aspiring artist, what would you teach? The hardest lesson in being an artist is learning to recognize and overcome the fear. It is a little voice that says things like: why are you doing this, you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have any talent, nobody caresâ&#x20AC;Ś. Also: strive to be original. It is true that everything has been done to death but you need to find your own voice. Take risks. As an accomplished artist, if you could do it all over again, would you change anything? Yes I would have gone to art school sooner and I would have sought out a supportive artistic community because this is the only place I fit in.

Apart from creating beautifully crafted clothes and sculptures; as well as photos and doing art installations, what other activities make you lose track of time? What got you into modeling? What is the story behind it? Though I have not been modeling for long, I have envisioned it since those pudgy days of braces and glasses. I was a competitive and successful athlete, but off court, I wanted to find an outlet to showcase how feminine I truly was. I tried modeling but it was a full time commitment for castings and auditions when I still had school and practice. I did a couple pageants and was part of the top 15 in both Miss California and Miss Texas - thinking that was going to calm the urge, but those only made it stronger! I said BYE to pageants and hello to winning a model search! Since then I have been networking with Agencies and Producers trying to find the best gigs out there! I want to work and I want to work hard!

What is it about your profession that holds your interest the most? The industry is all about self expression and showing that everything has life. It is a model’s job to make that vision a reality and bring emotion to the surface. Being a model or an actress is not just looking pretty or doing the right pose. It is also about evoking passion and telling a story which leaves the audience wanting more. It is a profession that plays hard to get and one that you eventually you fall in love with.

As a model, what would you say is your best feature? I love being tall and it is what describes me! But in my opinion I adore my eyes and lips. There is no better connection than eye contact! If it’s a look away, the juicy lips steal the show!

Who in the fashion industry is your role model and why? I respect those in the industry that are successful while being well rounded and balanced. Of course there are many fashionistas that inspire me but as far as a ‘role model’ is concern, I like to look towards “the self” for that. Don’t try to be anyone else because you will never be that. Apart from modeling, what are your other interests and passions in life? I love horseback riding! I would do that everyday if I could! I paint life’s beauty - I garden and watch it grow; plus in the SPRING TIME flowers are blooming! I enjoy writing quirky love songs and especially nuzzling with my man with a cup of coffee in our picket fence, front yard.

Who would you like to work with in a heartbeat and why? I’ve had many a dreams staring in a box office hit opposite Daniel Day Lewis. A crazy and twisted dramatic thriller!!

Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve had a passion for people. I have been very blessed with health and a family who loves me. I’ve always thought that it was my job to share my blessings with those who were less fortunate. Over the years I have volunteered at a shelter called Teen Challenge for Women. These women have gone through so much – whether it’s abusive relationships or chemical dependencies. We would go and spend time with them; gardening, cooking, crafts and doing just about anything to lift their spirits. This experience is not only eye opening but is so fulfilling, especially when you see these ladies light up and smile for the first time, after a very long time.

Your diet can be the most helpful thing! I am in no way strict with what I eat but it is all about portion control! I go to the gym about 3 times a week and I love to skateboard! The funny thing is, a lot of the times, this ‘inspiration’ had nothing to do with the actual situation at hand. I want to be the movement to motivate people and trigger a brainstorm to a positive realization or outcome.

What are things that make you come alive as a person and as a model? Music and inspiring magazines! I love being inspired by magazines to dress nicer and to look better - even the food sections inspire me. I love music. Being a piano player, I know a lot about the theory behind it all and so it interests me even more when I listen to it.

What is it about the “performing arts” – whether modeling or acting, that grabs you? Lights, cameras and audience! I love being in the spotlight. I absolutely love being on a set with all the cameras, lighting and crew. Since I was 2 years old, I would stand up on the table at the family dinner and I would sing and perform for my family - and even though I’m not a singer, I would still get them to clap after I’d finish singing songs that my grandma would sing to me. Where do you pull your inspiration from when you have to play a “role” or become a different character when modeling? My inspiration comes from all the billboards that I pass on the way to the shoot. And one very unique thing that I do is that I look up in the sky before I enter the shoot and I say to myself ”The Sky is the Limit.” I then have a moment of thought, which is a feeling that I have when I fly on an airplane. I would see the world so small and yes, so many big things can be made from it! That is my inspiration.

Tell us more about you being a Zumba Instructor. Does it help you with your modeling? I instruct 6 classes a week. In our center, many of our clients like what we do; which would be low, medium and high impact classes. With these options, they are able to follow whichever is easiest for them. And yes, it does help with my modeling! I always put on a show for the clients. I wear stylish hats and arm bands which promote “Zumba.” Also, I try to act in a fun and exciting way to create that party feel - regardless of my mood, the weather or how tired I am. Besides being a role model for all the clients, I also benefit from it because it makes me feel good after the workout.

That I’m a very genuine guy. I don’t take myself too seriously at all. I mean, I do look after myself like I watch what I eat and groom myself but in the simplest sense. I don’t care about money and I’m definitely not big headed despite having a lot of popular friends given that I was a gymnast in High School and now a Zumba instructor.

Yes I do, and I took a friend with me. She was helping me out a bit with the poses, but she would get in the way with what I was thinking and what choices I was making. In the end, I think it’s all about choices and moods. I’m always trying to reflect the outcome of the shoot to get the best shots - and not necessarily my own mood. I found the lights very bright, but I was so happy by the end of it because it felt like I was taking photos for a purpose instead of something that was just for fun - and it ended up boosting my confidence.

People tell me that I’m outgoing and good looking and yet find it weird that I’m actually nice. I take that as a big compliment because I know a lot of people that are very good looking but they love themselves so much that they would ignore you and not even say hello when you walk past them because they think they’re important simply because of their looks.

Do you remember your first photo shoot? How did you feel about being in front of the camera?

The person you admire most and why I obviously have actors and models that I look up to and wish I had their jobs and their looks – sometimes; but in terms of admiring, as cliché as it can sound, I look up to my parents because they proved that starting a new life with little to no money in a completely different country is not impossible.

I have a strong opinion about the security of the country; and so a few years ago I joined the Air Force Cadets wanting to be a Fighter Pilot so that I could help protect Australia’s borders and assist in humanitarian aids to those countries that needed it. That alone has motivated me so much to do just about anything that I want in terms Nowadays, I am just a member of of career. And so I’m optimistic about “Welcome Centre” where I hold my my career in the performing arts industry. What are your thoughts when it comes to describing a model with substance? I think a model is not somebody who has “the looks” or “the size” ... I think a model with substance is a model that can create an experience. One that intrigues the viewer to make them feel as if they can automatically depict what is trying to be said in the photograph. Also, being able to adapt to different situations without much hassle and being able to control your fear when you need to take something to the next level.

FUN FACTS Tell us a funny joke A guy was looking for his keys in the bar. The bartender says to him “What are you looking for?” The guy says “my keys, I cannot find them.”. The bartender then says “Well why are you looking over there for them?” The guy replies “because here there is light.” (laughs)

Where can one run into you? I usually like to walk around Town Hall, only because I love the architecture there and the amazing light poles. I also like the atmosphere of being in the city because it makes me think of how many things are going on just as I’m walking around. People on calls, People on computers, Photo shoots happening, TV series being shot in studios, etc. and it just all makes me feel like I’m in a nice big major city.

What character would you most like to play? I would love to play Ryan Reynolds in The Proposal. He has a genuine side to him and I think it relates to me a lot. I would also love to play a cheeky character - like in Home Alone.

If you can be any musician, artist or celebrity, who would you want to be? Probably Tom Cruise. He has the look and skills as an actor to play many roles. It was his movie Top Gun where he is a fighter pilot that made me want to get into acting. Movies allow me to create scenes and live a certain lifestyle though it’s not my actual lifestyle.

Best Assignment as a Model:

Having to pose over the edge of rocks and cliffs for a photoshoot. It was something Three most important things in different and I was not scared at all. I was in a different mind frame focusing on the your life shoot so it didn’t bother me.
