About IFMSA The International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations (IFMSA) is a non-political and non-profit organization, that is the oldest and largest student-run organizations in the world. IFMSA was established in 1951 after the end of World War II to serve as a platform for unity, collaboration and peace among medical students. IFMSA has a broad representation of 127 member organizations (NMO) from 119 countries across the continents and working in close relation with several non-governmental organizations from all over the world, representing around 1.3 million medical students.

At the beginning, IFMSA started with 3 committees, Standing Committee on Medical Education (SCOME), Standing Committee on Professional Exchange (SCOPE), and Standing Committee on Students’ Health (SCOSH). Today we have 6 standing committees that concentrate in issues on several areas, such as public health (SCOPH), research exchanges (SCORE), human rights (SCORP) and reproductive health (SCORA).

IFMSA is recognized as a non-governmental organization by the United Nations, and has been renowned as worldwide medical student representatives by the World Health Organization and the World Medical Association on several occasions.

IFMSA builds capacity through training, projects and exchange opportunities for empowering medical students to become a key element in changing the world. The federation unites medical students worldwide for leading initiatives, for representing the opinion and ideas of the next generation of health professionals for improving the global health.

About SCOME Standing Committee on Medical Education (SCOME), gathers medical students from all the globe, who are interested in taking an active role for creating and implementing an optimal learning environment for medical students. Also, SCOME aims to impact positively in the medical education quality for making better future doctors that improve the world health care.

SCOME offers an international platform for medical students to come together, for empowering and receive capacity building trainings, that can be used for increasing the local and national impact of projects and activities. Also, tools may be provided for advocacy and for representing the voice of medical students in several international levels, such as the World Health Organization, World Federation for Medical Education, among others.

During the year, you can participate in different SCOME Sessions as there are several international IFMSA Meetings. The 5 Regional Meetings in each Region and 2 General Assemblies, one in March and other on August. Other online meetings and Small Working Groups are available for medical students to participate actively.

SCOME Structure IFMSA Director on Medical Education (SCOME Director) Is elected each year by the National Member Organizations at the IFMSA General Assembly in August. She/he coordinates the work that is done by National Officers, projects coordinators and other SCOMEdians. The SCOME Director is responsible for the SCOME meetings during the IFMSA General Assemblies.

Liaison Officer for Medical Education issues (LME) Was established in 2000 to represent IFMSA and SCOME towards international associations in the field of medical education (e.g. World Federation for Medical Education [WFME]). The SCOME-D and the LME work closely together during the year and the GAs.

Regional Assistant (RA) He/She is appointed by the Medical Education Director. The main task of the Regional Assistants is to keep in touch with the national SCOME-groups in the other region, provide SCOME members of the region with personal and professional support, encourage and assist the development of the SCOME in the Region, establish priorities and work on the development of a regional plan of action.

National Officer on Medical Education (NOME) Each National Member Organization of IFMSA elects a NOME, her/his task is to coordinate and encourage local or national activities in the respective country.

Local Officers on Medical Education (LOME). They are in charge of local improvement in Medical Education and related activities at the different local medical faculties of a National Member Organization. They are elected locally and they are responsible for tackling local problems.

Introduction of SCOME-Related Programs IFMSA Programs are centralized streams of all affiliated activities done by IFMSA National Member Organizations (NMOs) and IFMSA as an international federation. IFMSA Programs are addressing a problem within a specific field that we as medical students and global health advocates stand up for while connecting local, national and international activities and opportunities that contribute to the final outcome. All IFMSA Programs fall in line with IFMSA vision, mission, priorities, strategic plan and work of NMOs locally and nationally. They are established by NMOs during IFMSA General Assembly with the support of the IFMSA Executive Board ensuring the quality, consistency and sustainability of IFMSA Programs. There are currently five programs involving Medical Education and, therefore, we call them SCOME Related programs: Medical Education Systems, Teaching Medical Skills, Human Resources for Health, Ethics and Human Rights in Health and Health Systems.

1) Medical Education Systems Program Coordinator: Hsu-Li Huang E-mail address: mededsystems@ifmsa.org Enrollment Form: http://goo.gl/forms/jV6oeyZWFQ This program involves activities that aim to have students learning more about medical education topics, in a way they are more involved in the medical education system and in faculty decision making. There are many topics that can be discussed here, such as curriculum, learning theory, assessment and evaluation.

2) Teaching Medical Skills Program Coordinator: Petra van Pijkeren E-mail address: medicalskills@ifmsa.org Enrollment Form: https://goo.gl/89JSFq The main goal here is to complement the formation students have in medical school. Activities that aim to improve the competences of future doctors on medical related topics, especially practical skills. Even though the medical student and the medical school are the main target, the final idea is having a better healthcare in the future.

3) Human Resources for Health Program Coordinator: Alberto Abreu da Silva E-mail address: hrh@ifmsa.org Enrollment Form: https://goo.gl/TdIjjr

Activities that aim to engage the medical student to study, discuss and advocate for the improvement of healthcare workforce planning, distribution and quality can be enrolled into this program. Advocacy initiatives and awareness campaigns are examples of what can be developed in order to tackle Human Resources for Health difficulties. 4) Ethics and Human Rights in Health Program Coordinator: Maria Gołębiowska E-mail address: ethics@ifmsa.org Enrollment Form: https://goo.gl/FZBGjC Medical doctors should advocate for their patients and know how to face ethical dilemmas. In order to do so, activities that involve teaching the medical student about human rights and letting them understand about how they should proceed ethically in different scenarios can be done and added into this program.

5) Health Systems

Program Coordinator: Monica Kujabi E-mail address: healthsystem@ifmsa.org Enrollment Form: https://goo.gl/RWioxi Every organization, institution and resource that is devoted to produce health action is part of a Health System. This program is basically for activities that work with health systems in some way, such as WHO Simulations, Policy making discussions, activities regarding Universal Health Coverage and the student engagement on the improvement of the Healthcare System.

EBM and Open Access : How to harness medical data in MedEd

Associated SC

Description

SCORA, SCOME, SCOPE

Some patients may not be comfortable talking about their sexual history, sex partners, or sexual practices. Still, we as future healthcare providers, need to have proficient skills at withdrawing that information, only by doing this we can ensure a proper anamnesis and the best health outcomes for our patients. Throughout this joint session, we will explore the different steps and methodologies to carry out an adequate sexual history taking.

All

Health costs. It's the universal truth no matter who pays for healthcare, be that a private Person or government. In the age where UHC is becoming accepted norm in many countries we don't ever critically look at healthcare from economical viewpoint, which is something that individuals with any interest of working in public service should surely do! In this session, the expected outcomes include: - Discuss models of healthcare financing - Highlighting intersectionality, equity, human rights, social determinants of health and interventions that help to overcome barriers and that promote equality and inclusion. - Participants recognize economic issues that arise from UHC and other models of healthcare

SCOME, SCORP

Organ donation, harvesting, or trade - those topics are strongly related to ethical dilemmas currently evolving in medicine. As the art of transplantation is strongly developing, changes in perception of spiritualism, human body and death, cultivated for ages by tradition and religion are extremely difficult to adapt in the battle for chances for one to live. What kind of challenges will healthcare face in future practice? During this joint session we would like to present this important topic in broader perspective - taking into consideration not only medical aspects, but also legal and ethical view based on our personal cultural experiences.

SCOME, SCORE

Evidence-based medicine (EBM), that is using the current best evidence in conjunction with individual clinical expertise to better patient care, has been a hot topic in the medical field for the last decades. However, many healthcare practitioners struggle with integrating that concept within their clinical practices; though the reasons may be numerous, the lack of public and free access to research data comes to mind as an unnecessary hurdle to the practice of EBM in our hospitals.

This joint session (SCOME and SCORE) will tackle the following aspects: -What is EBM? -Why is EBM important? -Do medical schools harness EBM at its fullest? If not, what are the obstacles that prevent them from doing so? -What is Open Access and how can it be achieved in a context of competitive publishing? -How can Open Access empower healthcare practitioners to use EBM in their practices?

Summary

Expected Outcomes

Assessment & This session will introduce the Evaluation for difference between assessment and Curriculum evaluation in curriculum, guide the participants to review the quality of assessment or evaluation in the school, and show the participants the toolkit of assessment & evaluation.

Participants should understand the difference between assessment and evaluation, including their approaches and objectives. Participants can receive a toolkit of assessment methods. Participants can have the opportunity to review the quality of assessment or evaluation in their curriculum. Participants should be aware of what is student self-assessment.

Advocacy for Medical Education

This session will provide participants with opportunities for practicing the skills of advocacy, especially in the case with faculty or school. To get involved in the decision making process, medical students need to take actions and be the advocate for themselves.

Participants should be aware of the role of students in medical education, how to effectively involve them in decision making and medical education system building, and how to encourage them to advocate for their rights.

Curriculum Design: For Activities

Curriculum planning is not only useful for formal courses in school, but also important when organizing any educational activities in NMO. This session will help participants to review the process of curriculum planning, developing and implement the idea into extra-curricular activities.

Participants should be aware of what should be considered to plan a curriculum and develop it to be suitable for medical students and how to implement such curriculum to reach the targeted goals. Besides, they should be able to implement the theory of curriculum planning into the extra-curriculum activities that they organized by their NMO.

Teaching & Learning Theories Outcome-based Education

This session will provide a glimpse of theories in medical education. As peer education is implementing in all the Standing Committees, understanding good teaching techniques becomes an essential skill for students.

Participants should be well oriented to the model of a good teacher and how to implement good teaching techniques to provide a high quality learning environment for medical students. Furthermore, they should be aware of what education is, and how can it be provided to ensure fruitful outcomes (outcome-based education).

SCOME Agenda

SCOME Calendar The best thing about being part of an international organization is having the opportunity to share our stories, experience, to motivate each other, and for sure to be the change in our communities. We all have common problems and issues as students but we deal with it in a different ways and as Vince Lombardi said “The measure of who we are is what we do with what we have”, that’s why it's very interesting to learn from our friends all over the globe. The SCOME calendar gives you an overview of activities and projects running in different NMOs over the 5 regions. This will help motivated members to start a new idea or to communicate with another NMO working on the same activity and plans. It will strengthen our SCOME network, sustainability, and diversity.

It's hard to show every activity in the calendar but let's take you in a short magical ride over the IFMSA World to show you a small preview of activities happening this year in the SCOME Family: NMO MSAKE Kenya AssociaMed Tunisia MMSA Malta
