IFMSA – SCOME TMET (Training Medical Education Trainers) Regulations Amended by the Standing Committee on Medical Education Plenary at the August Meeting 2018-Montreal.

1. General Definitions 1.1. Name The official name of the TMET Workshop is Training Medical Education Trainers. 1.2 The main intended outcomes of a TMET • • • •

Participants have broader knowledge and understanding of Medical Education Topics. Participants are able to conduct Medical Education activities on a local/national/international level. Participants are able to design and conduct Training Sessions on Medical Education Topics. Participants feel empowered to take on leadership roles in the field of Medical Education.

1.3 Main target audience: Anyone with an interest in medical education topics, regardless of their premeeting experience, can participate in a TMET.

2. TMET Preparations 2.1 Call for International Certification 2.1.1 If any NMO shall call for international certification, it needs to submit an activity description and send it to the SCOME-D to be discussed with the hosting NMO, at least 10 weeks prior to the start of the event.

2.2 Workshop approval 2.2.1 This proposal has to be review by the SCOME Director, who will give approval in order to be receive international certification. 2.2.2 If the hosting NMO only calls for national certification, they are not obliged to submit a proposal to the SCOME-D, but the training can’t be called TMET and can’t be promoted as such.

4. Working hours 4.1 The TMET should comprise of at least 24 working hours, not exceeding more than 10 hours per day. The Workshop is recommended to be held in 3-4 days. The workshop cannot exceed one week since the first day of training.

5. Training Environment

Session

5.1 The training environment should be fully equipped with needed stationery. Trainers should ask for needed stationery by the deadline provided by the OC. Basic items such as projector, speaker, data show, flipcharts, markers, duct tape, pencils, papers, scissors, and post-it should be available anytime upon the trainer’s request.

6. Number of participants

8.1.2 The other trainer(s) have got a Trainer Education. Involvement of a TMET trainer who has not facilitated a TMET before should be encouraged when possible. 8.1.3 Out of all trainers conducting the TMET, at least two must have attended or facilitated a TMET or ESME Course. 8.1.3 By delivering ¼ of a TMET, every trainer automatically receives a TMET certification if they haven’t attained one yet. 8.1.3.1 To receive this certification, the facilitator must deliver ¼ of the TMET Sessions. 8.2 There must be an open call for the Team of Trainers. The call has to be shared via the SCOME email list and the SCOME Facebook groups.

6.1 There cannot be more than 25 participants in one TMET Workshop.

8.3 Organizing Committees should make efforts to cover trainers’ fees and provide trainers with a travel reimbursement.

7. TMET Language

7.1 To be internationally certified, two third of the contents of the sessions have to be conducted in English.

9.1 Mandatory Topics

7.2 The language the TMET will be facilitated in has to be stated in the call for trainers and participants.

As the participant will graduate and become a TMET Trainer, which will be expected to give trainings related to medical education, they should have related knowledge and skills on how to conduct a training, how to facilitate a session, knowledge & skill transfer (Session planning and design, Training activity design, debriefing, facilitation and co-facilitation and reporting). These items should be addressed both in training context as well as the context of a Medical Teacher.

8. TMET Trainers 8.1 The Team of Trainers for a TMET consists of: 2-3 Trainers as follows: 8.1.1 Head of the Team of Trainers that has at least facilitated 1 TMET. This Trainer will be the contact person from the Team of Trainers for the OC as well as the SCOME IT. This Person is also responsible for submitting the final Agenda.

9.1.1 Training delivery skills


9.1.2 Education, Teaching & Learning A TMET Trainer should have a thorough understanding about learning & education theories, effective teaching techniques, models of education and medical education systems. Furthermore, a TMET Trainer should be aware with the concept of Outcome-based education, transformative learning. 9.1.3 Curriculum Design, Development, & Implementation

TMET Trainers should also be very well accustomed with the IFMSA Social Accountability Toolkit, how to use them, and how it can be integrated within a medical curriculum. 9.2 Recommended Optional Topics 9.2.1 Human Resources for Health 9.2.2 Global medical education concepts 9.2.3 Evidence Based Medicine.

A TMET Trainer should be aware of what should be taken into consideration to plan a curriculum and develop it to be suitable for medical students as well as how to implement them to reach the targeted goals. Furthermore, the material should include practical approach on how to identify loophole/weak aspect within a certain curriculum and how the participant can solve that. 9.1.4 Medical Student Involvement A TMET Trainer should be aware of the role of students in medical education, how to effectively involve them in decision making and medical education system building, and how to encourage them to advocate for their rights as well as build understanding on what those rights include. 9.1.5 Assessment & Evaluation Understanding different ways of assessment & evaluation of students and of medical education institutions, as well as differences between them is vital for a TMET Trainer to later on conduct their own session. Furthermore, a TMET Trainer is expected to link the concept within medical education system & curriculum. 9.1.6 Social Accountability A TMET Trainer should understand the concept of Social Accountability, its basic principles as well as the implementation

9.2.4 Research in Medical Education. 9.2.5 Quality Assurance and Accreditation in Medical Education. 9.2.6 Transformative Learning 9.2.7 Activity Management in Medical Education Field 9.2.8 Professionalism & Ethics A TMET Trainer should be aware of the professionalism & ethical code of conduct a good teacher/leader should follow and what to do in different situations where this could be challenged. 9.2.9 Medical Education Issues 10. TMET Graduation & Certification 10.1 The TMET participant graduates when they attend the minimal number of hours required (85% of the total TMET hours) and as soon as the 1st training session is delivered and assessed by an IFMSA Trainer (see Annex 4). This should happen within 6 months after the TMET has concluded. It is highly recommended to have the first training as soon as possible. 10.2 The topic of the TMET graduation session should be one of the topics included in point 9, excluding “Training delivery skills�.


10.3 For receiving certificates 10.3.1 The participants must fill the pre and post assessment forms according to the deadlines stated in section “TMET Preparations�. 10.3.2 The head of the team of trainers must fill the TMET Report Form (Annex 5) and send the participants list up to 6 weeks after the end of the TMET. And the TGFU and updated participants list up to 6 months after the end of the TMET.

11. TMET T-Shirts 11.1 The Designs of the official TMET Shirts will be provided by the SCOME International Team according to the Corporate Identity Manual of IFMSA. 11.2 If ordered, the Organizing Committee has to provide the participants with official TMET shirts until the last day of the TMET Workshop.

12. SCOME International Team 12.1 The SCOME International Team will appoint a member from the team to followup with the workshop Head of the team of trainers and organizers (TMET coordinator) and provide them with all necessary support and resources to ensure the success of the TMET. This person will be the TMET Supervisor. 12.2 The SCOME International Team has the authority to make exceptions to the mentioned regulations above, based on individual circumstances and after consulting with the relevant IFMSA Officials and Workshop Organizing Committee.
