Message from the SCOME Director Dearest SCOMEdians, An exciting General Assembly is about to happen. In the heart of Canada, hundreds of medical students from around the world will gather together to share their experiences, knowledge, ideas, proposals and passions. It doesn’t matter if this is your first or seventh General Assembly, each IFMSA event changes and adapts to the needs of medical students, communities, healthcare and medical education systems worldwide. The Medical Education Sessions have adapted to all these needs as well. With relevant focuses— from “social accountability in medical schools” to “filling in the learner’s gap”—we will provide medical students with practical tools, up-to-date information, discussion spaces, and a full learning experience. Through these initiatives, we intend to give participants an understanding of medical education around the world so that each student can go back to their country and create local and national activities. Get prepared for a fulfilling international experience where you will represent both your city and your country; but most importantly, you will break cultural, religious, and geographical barriers and show that you are a citizen of this world. “Think globally, act locally” Sincerely, Pablo Estrella IFMSA SCOME Director 2017-2018

It’s my strong belief students in our irreverence to think differently are the changemakers. This thought gets me out of my own laziness everyday and has made me want to do a bit more than studying Medicine the last 4 years. If you’re reading this, you probably share some similar views. So… Let’s come together, share our backgrounds and experiences, understand where we’ll go next and where we’ll take Medical Education next. SCOME sessions were the place I found my voice in some way and I hope in some way you’ll find yours too!

About IFMSA

It all started 66 years ago. A group of Medical students from Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Norway, Germany, Switzerland, England, The Netherlands and Austria sought out to change the world after WWII, with this vision in mind: “A world in which all medical students unite for global health and are equipped with the knowledge, skills and values to take on health leadership roles locally and globally.” They gathered in Copenhagen to start a non-political organization that would represent medical students. The purpose of such an organization was to “study and promote the interests of medical student cooperation on a purely professional basis, and promoting activities in the field of student health and student relief.” Hence, the International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations (IFMSA) was born.

Health (SCOSH). One year later the first General Assembly (GA) took place in London, 30 students participated, representing 10 countries. Over the years, the original eight member countries have been joined by many more. IFMSA is the world’s largest and oldest student organization representing medical students, maintaining 127 National Member Organization (NMOs) from over 5 regions. With over 1.3 million members, IFMSA is recognized as a non-governmental organization within the United Nations’ system and the World Health Organization. It is also the student chapter of the World Medical Association. IFMSA unites medical students worldwide to lead initiatives that impact positively the communities we serve. IFMSA represents the opinions and ideas of future health professionals in the field of global health, and works in collaboration with external partners. IFMSA builds capacity through training, project and exchange opportunities, while embracing cultural diversity so as to shape a sustainable and healthy future. The core purpose of IFMSA is to bring together the global community of medical students at the local, national and international level on social and health issues.

Initially three committees were formed: Standing Committee on Medical Education (SCOME), Standing Committee on Professional Exchange (SCOPE), and Standing Committee on Students’

SCOME Programs IFMSA Programs

Medical Education Systems

IFMSA Programs are developed to centralize the streams of activities which are organized by IFMSA National Member Organizations (NMOs) and IFMSA Internationally. All the programs connect with the work of IFMSA. One of the main goals of the programs is to measure the impact of IFMSA.

Program Coordinator: Aleksandar Veselinov Farfarov

You can describe one program also as a large umbrella. It’s a broader topic, but covers multiple projects and activities. If you bundle those projects and activities, it’s easier to measure the outcomes and the impact of those projects, alone, but also all together. This way, it’s easier to gather all the work that we’ve done. The IFMSA Programs are not Standing Committee specific, but can overlap within standing committees. Having a centralized stream of work in each field allows our Federation to monitor and evaluate the impact of mutual efforts of all NMOs towards solving emerging global health issues. There are currently five programs involving Medical Education and therefore, we call them SCOME Related Programs: Medical Education Systems, Teaching Medical Skills, Human Resources for Health, Ethics and Human Rights in Health and Health Systems.

E-mail Address: mededsystems@ifmsa. org This program involves activities that aim to have students learning more about medical education topics, in a way they are more involved in the medical education system and in faculty decision making. There are many topics that can be discussed here, such as curriculum, learning theory, assessment and evaluation. Teaching Medical Skills

Program Coordinator: Ximena Alexandra Nuñez E-mail Address: medicalskills@ifmsa.org The main goal here is to complement the formation students have in medical

SCOME Programs school. Activities that aim to improve the competences of future doctors on medical related topics, especially practical skills. Even though the medical student and the medical school are the main target, the final idea is having a better healthcare in the future.

Health Systems

Program Coordinator: Christina Kefalidi Ethics and Human Rights in Health

E-mail Address: healthsystems@ifmsa.org

Program Coordinator: Mary Adaeze Obi

This program is basically for activities that work with health systems in some way, such as WHO Simulations, Policy making discussions, activities regarding Universal Health Coverage and the student engagement on the improvement of the Healthcare.

E-mail address: ethics@ifmsa.org Medical doctors should advocate for their patients and know how to face ethical dilemmas. In order to do so, activities that involve teaching the medical student about human rights and letting them understand how they should proceed ethically in different scenarios can be done and added into this program.

SCOME Sessions Description DAY 2

DAY 3

Expectations when attending SCOME Sessions at a General Assembly tend to round up in turn of Medical Education Systems and what are the different kinds of systems implemented and students role in them. This day is hoping to go beyond them. Not only, will we talk about Medical Education Systems, but we will also have two externals bringing up their unique takes. The first one will talk about the exploitation of medical students and other about developing an online curriculum. These topics will set up the discussion and ideas sharing that will follow. And again closing the session, we will have parallel sessions for those who are just getting started and are wondering how to fill in the learner’s gap. If you are already used to analysing your curriculum and proposing changes, then the session on Accreditation and Quality Assurance will be just right for you.

At day three, we are going to look at the future, what we want to do in the upcoming years for SCOME. We will have an introduction of the IFMSA programs and their importance for the development of the committee. Followed by the SCOME Strategic Plan Session, where the discussion of SCOME’s future will take place. Next session, the SCOME Plenary is SCOME’s very own decision making process body, where each NMO can vote for their aspiration within Medical Education field. This day brings a little surprise of its own. Despite the sessions being over, you will be able to attend a theme event based on a SCOME’s very own topic, Social Accountability.

Goals: • Acknowledge and discuss about the different Medical Education Systems around the world. • Understand the issues underlying the exploitation of medical students and different levels where they occur. • Get a perspective on developing an online curriculum and how can students be involved on it. • Acknowledge the role students can have working on the curriculum. • Learn the different tools that SCOME have developed to analyze medical education systems from around the world (Medical Education System Survey).

20

Goals : • Understand the relevance of IFMSA programs in the local, national and international work of SCOME. • Analyse the SCOME Strategic Plan for 2018 - 2021, to resolve on the blueprint for future. • Avail a chance to hear out NOMEs and their point of views with regard to Medical Education. • An open space for NOMEs to share their ambitions and utilise the opportunity in voicing the decision making process. • Gaining fresh perspective on Social Accountability at the theme event, including knowledge on the topic and the journey from existing as an idea to a SWG and certain success in its undertaking.

SCOME Sessions Description DAY 4

DAY 5

If the theme event got you curious or by any chance you missed it, we will got into Social Accountability with further depth. This will be, a time where you can indulge in better understanding and adopting Social Accountability as a practical concept. After that, it’s time to get our candidates for SCOME-Director and Liaison Officer for Medical Education Issues talking about their plans and engage everyone in a conversation about SCOME’s future. Read their candidatures, watch their presentation and look out for the sessions on day 3. We will be waiting for your questions! To close the day, we will have parallel sessions with external on two different and rather new topics in our Standing Committee. One session will be about resource stewardship including STEPs Programs - Exams, lab tests and the testing done in hospitals with Choosing Wisely representative. The other sessions will be conducted by Formindep representative about the influence of pharmaceutical industries in medical schools and how they perform unethical promotion and interventions.

Day five, the last day. We will start the day with topics you still eager to discuss. You have the opportunity to address topics that we haven’t talked about or topics you want to discuss in more depth. So this morning we have time to do that! Later we continue with the Global Priorities that SCOME has and have a session about Human Resources for Health and Meaningful Student Involvement. After that, we have our closing and it’s sadly time to say goodbye...

Goals: • Clear your concepts and build on the knowledge gained on the day before related to Social Accountability.

Goals: • Discuss what you have in mind for implementation in future. • Help you take on board ideas you feel need more focus and developing a plan to how you can go about them. • Making Global Priorities known and having an elaborate discussion on them. • Develop an interpretation of what Human Resources for Health are and how they play a role in medical students life. • Making sense of Meaningful Students Involvement and create a perspective you can take back home to exercise it.

• Understanding the management of different diagnostic and therapeutic tests performed on patients to reduce their unnecessary use. • Acknowledging the unethical aspect of the pharmacological promotions and interventions.

SCOME Regional Sessions EUROPE

AMERICAS Americas is well known for its passion, commitment and motivation to make a change. In Regional SCOME sessions, we will apply this values into new learnings in the medical education field. Medical students of this wonderful region have been developing SCOME in their NMOs so fast and with high quality, with amazing projects and activities. Having a glimpse about Advocacy in Medical Education and Social Accountability, to share experiences and develop action points for each NMO about these topics will be part of the sessions. Also we will give updates on the Regional Strategic Plan for SCOME, adopted since AmRM 2018 and will work on new strategies to promote enrollment into IFMSA Programs and External Representation.

The European region is a diversity challenge itself. We are 48 NMOs with different levels of development and activity. But don’t let yourself be deceived by the dimension, we assure you there are meeting points in SCOME and every other Standing Committee. When it comes to it, most of us will be working to complement our curriculums with activities or with advocacy actions and it’s when we meet that we find out someone shares the same struggles or someone has just the solution we were looking for. After March Meeting sessions and EuRegMe where we discussed what each of us could learn from each and improve our own national activities. This GA the focus will be on our region. As we are setting priorities for IFMSA and for our region, as well as approving our SCOME Strategic Plan, there’s no greater time to discuss SCOME Europe. Let’s take these documents as background and set out what we want to work to make Medical Education in Europe better! EMR My dearest EMR SCOMEdians, You belong to one of the Regions that is most active in Medical Education; NMOs have been putting tremendous efforts into meaningfully involving their SCOMEdians and Medical Students within their Medical Education Systems on a local level, as witnessed by the achievements of each NOME from the EMR. Consequently, it is time to amplify our achievements and unite our efforts as a Region to strengthen the collaboration routes within the EMR. Therefore, the SCOME EMR Session during August Meeting 2018 will be a brainstorming discussion on Plan-

SCOME Regional Sessions ning the Future SCOME EMR Strategy, in the light of the development and future implementation of the SCOME Strategic Plan 2018/2021. This session is an opportunity that you shouldn’t miss to voice your ideas and opinions, as well as participate in the decision making in SCOME on Regional Level, as we will discuss the future goals and action points to be included in our EMR SCOME Strategic Plan. What to bring? The most you know about SCOME in your NMO, your flags, and most importantly, the most positive vibes SCOME ever knows! See you very soon, Marou. AFRICA Hello African SCOMEdians ! Excited for Montreal ? I know I am ! Africa is still slowly advancing in medical education. Despite the rapid change in the profiles of students & the burst of technology, education is still ancient. Hence through our sessions, we will learn how use the tool of Medical education research to advance the knowledge, skills, and professionalism of medical students by understanding and evaluating educational systems. These systems include policies related to admissions and curriculum, teaching methods, instructional technology & other resources, the attitudes that influence educational experiences, and even the students attitudes of themselves towards learning etc.. Ultimately, research in medical education is conducted to address issues and questions in medical education, to design, evaluate, and support curricular innovations and to ultimately reform medical education. If all the above interests you, attend our SCOME region-

al Sessions ! Learn, develop your idea and join the army working on change ! IT’S TIME FOR AFRICA :D ASIA PACIFIC Asia Pacific region itself is a blend of diversity in all walks of life. Here people are far more hardworking and talented. In this region even opportunities have to be self created to move on and grow. The more we see the more we know. This region has seen little and is now moving out and about to see, to learn more and to bring home the change. These change makers as i see them need the chance to take the lead to advancement. Capacity building is a key area which we will be focusing on. The hows, whys and the essence of advocacy. A look over how has SCOME been working in the region and how it can further extend its roots. A picture of what time in between AM17 and AM18 looked like. With a look into programs and their enrollment. Adding to this we will top up our sessions with Meaningful Students Involvement and ways to move ahead for AP region. What YOU can do to give a boost to your Medical Education System. Here comes in the SCOME strategic plan which we are going to take on board so AP region is going to take a kick start with this to achieve a definite result in its goals. All i know about the Asia Pacific enthusiasts is I have seen you struggle, but i have never seen you quit. Especially when i know this struggle is real. I want us to be each others constant support and power. So let’s understand and stand together to achieve one common goal. You have what it takes to be the change. This GA in Montreal, we’ll devise, discuss and formulate a plan for what AP region has, and what it is to attain. ARE YOU READY?? www.ifmsa.org

Theme Event Theme Events are an excellent opportunity for IFMSA and each Organizing Committee to dig deeper into global and relevant matters. In this GA, the theme will be Health Beyond the Hospital with a special focus on Social Accountability! This means that SCOME will be at the forefront of preparations and planning and we have prepared some excellent activities for you - especially for the Theme Event workshop on the 5th of August, between

24

15:00-17:00. Join us to explore the levels of Social Accountability together with renowned experts. How can we make our educational activities more socially accountable? How do we measure our service towards the community and its impact? And last but not least, how does research correspond to society’s needs? Together we will work to answer these questions and most importantly, join forces to prepare IFMSA’s Action Plan for Social Accountability!

SCOME Related Policy Documents A very important aspect of IFMSA external work, especially for the VPE/LO team, is advocacy! And the greatest tool for our international advocacy efforts are our policy documents. Currently, SCOME has 6 adopted relevant policy documents, which you can access here: Global Policy on Medical Education | Widening Participation in Medical Education | Open Access, Open Education and Open Data | Global Health Workforce | Social Accountability | Ethical Medical Placements Abroad.

In this General Assembly, we are proposing a policy document on Accreditation and Quality Assurance which we invite you to review you as preparation for Montreal. Policy Documents represent the official stances of the Federation on important topics and thus, it is of utmost importance to ensure that they take into account our members’ -your- perspective.
