Introduction to IFMSA “A world in which all medical students unite for global health and are equipped with the knowledge, skills and values to take on health leadership roles locally and globally.” IFMSA Vision Statement. The year was 1951, as the world was rebuilding itself after the World War II, when medical students from eight countries (Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Norway, Germany, Switzerland, England, The Netherlands and Austria) gathered in Copenhagen to start a non-political organization that would represent medical students. The purpose of such an organization was to “study and promote the interests of medical student cooperation on a purely professional basis, and promoting activities in the field of student health and student relief.” Hence, the International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations (IFMSA) was born. Initially three committees were formed: Standing Committee on Medical Education (SCOME), Standing Committee on Professional Exchange (SCOPE), and Standing Committee on Students’ Health (SCOSH). One year later the first General Assembly (GA) took place in London, 30 students participated, representing 10 countries. Over the years, the original eight member countries have

been joined by many more. IFMSA is the world’s largest and oldest student organization representing medical students, maintaining 123 National Member Organization (NMOs) from over 100 countries. IFMSA unites medical students worldwide to lead initiatives that impact positively the communities we serve. IFMSA represents the opinions and ideas of future health professionals in the field of global health, and works in collaboration with external professionals in the field of global health, and works in collaboration with external partners. IFMSA builds capacity through training, project and exchange opportunities, while embracing cultural diversity so as to shape a sustainable and healthy future. The core purpose of IFMSA is to bring together the global community of medical students at the local, national and international level on social and health issues.

Introduction to SCOME There are six existing Standing Committees within the IFMSA: Professional Exchanges (SCOPE), Research Exchanges (SCORE), Public Health (SCOPH), Human Rights and Peace (SCORP), Sexual & Reproductive Health including HIV and AIDS (SCORA) and finally: Medical Education (SCOME). Medical Education should be a concern of every medical student as M.E includes both curricular activities and extracurricular activities; hence, it shapes not only the quality of future doctors, but also the quality of healthcare. As medical students are directly exposed to medical curricula, they are the first quality check of medical education and they should rightfully have an influence on the creation of new curricula and curriculum development. It is often the medical students who are the strongest proponents for adapting their education to the needs of their community. We are concerned with facing the needs of healthcare in a modern society and are willing to commit to make sure our education prepares us for them. Here SCOME enters the game.
playing an active role in their medical education; how to analyze it and then advocate adapting it to the present and future needs as future doctors. As medical students are direct SCOME offers an international platform for medical students to come together, to be empowered and receive capacity building trainings to enhance their impact on the local level through projects and advocacy, and on the other hand forms a tool that represents the voices of medical students worldwide through international organizations such as the World Health Organization, World Medical Association, World Health Organization, World Federation for Medical Education and many others. Throughout the year, our members come together in two General Assemblies (March and August) and in five Regional Meetings, can participate in online meetings or in Small Working Groups on specific topics, and are constantly updated by the International Team on activities that are going on globally. In this annual report you will find the highlights of the activities from this term.
The purpose of the SCOME is to gather students from all over the world who would be interested in

SCOME Structure The IFMSA Director on Medical Education (SCOME-D) is elected on a yearly basis by the IFMSA General Assembly during the August Meeting. As per IFMSA bylaws, the SCOME-D oversees and coordinates the work being done within SCOME, be it by the National Officers or the International team. The SCOME-D is also in charge of preparing and guiding the Standing Committee meetings during General Assemblies and Regional Meetings. At the start of the term in October the SCOME-D appoints members of the international team to assist carry out these tasks. The position of Liaison Officer on Medical Education Issues (LOMEi) was established in 2000 to represent IFMSA and SCOME towards international associations in the field of medical education. The LOMEi is also elected on a yearly basis by the IFMSA General Assembly.
Each National Member Organization (NMO) of IFMSA should have a National Officer on Medical Education (NOME). Tasks of NOMEs include encouraging and promoting SCOME activities within their respective countries and reporting back to the Regional Assistant and/or SCOME-D. NOMEs are recommended to attend IFMSA General Assembly meetings in March and August, where they can network with each other, exchange ideas and expertise, and gain new knowledge to bring back to their national and local committees. Local Officers on Medical Education (LOMEs) are in charge of local improvement in Medical Education and related activities at the different local medical faculties of a National Member Organization. They are elected locally based on their NMOs’ respective bylaws and are responsible for tackling local problems.
The SCOME-D and LOMEi work closely together during the year and at the GAs. Regional Assistants are appointed by the SCOME-D. Their main tasks are to keep in touch with the national SCOME groups in their region, provide SCOME members of the region with personal and professional support, encourage and assist the development of SCOME in the region, establish priorities and work on the development of a regional plan of action.

MM2015 Theme Event Humanitarian Action We are living in hard times. Disasters and conflicts are happening all around the world. Health workers are in the frontlines and suffer from all the toxic outcomes the most. International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations is the largest international student organization. This will be an invaluable opportunity to come together, deepen our knowledge and have discussions as future doctors. The name of our theme has ‘Action’ in it. Our goal is to educate, train and motivate fellow IFMSA members. The attendants will have opportunity to learn about emergency situations and how to respond in such situations. They will also have a chance to engage with specialists witnesses from emergency, disaster and conflict situations. In addition to all of these our members will have opportunity to know more about what is going on around the world- from the people that has vast knowledge and real life experience in war, conflict and disaster areas of the world. MM15 Theme Event Coordinating Team is extremely excited to organize the theme event. The theme event will be implemented with workshops, parallel sessions and panel sessions. With the outcomes of sessions we will come out with ‘Declaration of Antalya’- A declaration of Medical Students’ to tell the world our ideas on what we think and what we have to say.

SCOME Gift Swap Bring a gift with you to the SCOME Session and join the Gift Swap! How? Simply bring the gift with you to the first session and hand it to Rashad from the sessions team. Your gift will be tagged with a number, and on the last session, people who brough gifts will get to draw a random number. What? Anything that represents your country is encouraged, but basically anything would do! Include a note with your name, where you’re from, and a small inspirational note to whoever is going to receive it on the last day. Couldn’t get anything? No worries! You will still take part. You will draw a dare (acting/lip-syncing/etc...) or an empty paper from a container. If you get a dare you will have to perform it and the team will judge the winner who will receive a SCOME Gift. This small activity is meant to build lasting friendships and connections, and take back memory to last a lifetime.

IFMSA: from Projects to Programs Passion for projects is the reason most of us join our local committee and later IFMSA. They give us the drive and motivation to do what we do and work harder next time. This is why we genuinely believe that projects are the heart of IFMSA. Today, nearly every NMO takes pride in at least one project dealing with relevant national health issues. Projects are moving to make a difference within the region and we surely have no plans of slowing down. Projects, Programs, Activities? What is it all about? During the August Meeting 2014 in Taiwan, IFMSA as has undergone changes making a transition from a projects based system to a programs based system. With the new IFMSA Programs we turn the current complex projects structure into a simplified and outcome-oriented structure for activities, and activities are everything that YOU do locally, nationally or internationally. It will provide a flexible framework for NMO’s activities, whether they are long-term projects or “just” one-day events. IFMSA Programs will facilitate collaboration between our NMOs and aim to decrease the burden of bureaucracy, difficulties in assessing impact and providing institutional and financial support through IFMSA, allowing better empowerment of volunteer medical students to excel and innovate, opens opportunities and helps us to become agents of positive change in our communities.
workshop) that are managed and coordinated as one unit with the objective of achieving outcomes and benefits. The Programs framework has a simple reporting mechanism, and a simple enrollment process. Among several benefits, the current programs-based structure aims to ease the process of obtaining financial support from international and regional institutions through their participation in these Programs, thus taking the Federation to a whole new level as a service provider to our members. How to participate? It’s quite easy! For an activity to be affiliated with IFMSA program, the Activity Coordinator (anyone from any NMO who organizes an activity) should send the application to the Coordinator of the respective IFMSA Program at least one month before the starting date of the activity. Of course, you can send it before and with that you will have the opportunity to prepare the activity in collaboration with other medical students worldwide working on the same or similar topic. More detailed information how to join IFMSA Programs can be found here: English

Standing Committee Regulations Why do we need Standing Committee Regulations? It is of great importance for each of the committees to have certain regulations. Over time IFMSA has been working on variety of issues some of which are still worth discussing. Unfortunately, there is the thing that experience is quickly lost. That’s why we believe by adopting regulations for all of the committees we will save our institutional memory. We are more than sure that they will stand the test of time and that future generations will not face the problems we do right now such as: to start dealing with the issues of the earlier generations that had already been discussed in the past few years. These Regulations will be referred to in the IFMSA Bylaws. This is the only way in which IFMSA will remember certain points of information over the years. These Regulation will be common for all SCs but each will be able to work and fill in the specific parts tailored to the SC. The Standing Committee Regulations will be discussed in SCOME sessions , so make sure to read it! You can find it here.
Annual Working Plan The Annual Working Plan of SCOME is written by the SCOME International Team 2014/2015 which is comprised of priorities, objectives and indicators of success of each item. The AWP will be reviewed and renewed by the Standing Committee International Team twice per year-two weeks after the IFMSA General Assembly March Meeting and August Meeting. It will be accessible to all members of the IFMSA-Standing Committee through the mailing list. Our current working plan was made possible by the SCOME International Team term 2014/2015. Our current goals regarding Internal Capacity include: Goal 1: International Team Development Goal 2: Improve capacity building Goal 3: Improve online communication and resource development Goal 4: Improving representation in NMOs Goal 5: To provide high-level quality sessions at IFMSA Meetings Goal 6: Evaluation & monitoring Our current goals regarding External Representation include: Goal 1: Preparation for External Meetings Goal 2: Regional presence Goal 3: Visibility For more information about our plan of action with its actions points for each goal you can visit this link.
