New 911 RSR for Le Mans

Porsche will tackle the 2017 racing season with an all-out newly developed GT racer. The new 911 RSR makes full use of the breadth of the Le Mans 24 Hours GT regulations, and in addition to systematic lightweight design, features the ultra-modern, flat-six unit positioned in front of the rear axle. The four-litre, extremely light aggregate features direct fuel injection as well as a rigid valve drive and is characterised by outstanding efficiency. Depending on the size of the restrictor, the new normally-aspirated unit puts out around 375 kW (510 hp). Shift paddles on the

steering wheel actuate the sequential six-speed gearbox with a magnesium housing, which delivers power to the 31-centimetrewide rear wheels. The changeover to the new engine generation is now complete. After the 911 GT3 R and the 911 GT3 Cup, the spearhead of Porsche GT racing cars is now also powered by the same cutting-edge six-cylinder boxer engine family. The new 911 RSR’s serviceability has also been significantly improved - entire elements of the carbon-fibre body can be exchanged completely in a very short time thanks to clever quickrelease fasteners. Moreover, changes to the suspension setup can be performed much more quickly and easily. In the 2017 season, the factory is expected to run the new 911 RSR at nineteen outings which equates to more than 140 hours of racing. With two factory-entries, Porsche will tackle the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) including the 24 Hours of Le Mans as well as the American IMSA Weathertech Championship. The new 911 RSR will make its debut at the Daytona 24-hour race in January 2017. Source: nzmotorracing.co.nz

RX8 RENESIS ENGINE SIDE SEAL RANKING Side Seal Ranking

There are four possible options to choose when selecting RX8 RENESIS Engine side seals. The Rotor diagram (below) shows the locations of the side seal Rank stampings. These stampings are located on both sides of the Rotor. Each Rotor may have a combination of the four options. There are two options only for the Corner Seals, L & S Rank Codes. The “finished” side seals require no additional rework. The over length side seal allows the engine builder to set the tolerances to their specification.

MITO

Stepping up with a Business Skills Scholarship In the four years since joining the automotive industry, 22 year old MITO learner, Immanuel Rowe, has gained a national qualification, is well on his way to earning a second, and is thriving in a career he loves.

Working as a tyre technician at Tyrecorp, Silverdale, Immanuel wanted to explore his potential and future pathway in the industry. After a discussion with his manager, Grant Ogilvie, he decided to enrol in the National Certificate in Motor Industry (Vehicle Servicing) in Tyres (Level 2). A qualification usually expected to take a year to complete, he graduated in just under four months. “I decided to get qualified in order to progress my career and ensure I had something that recognised the skills and knowledge I’d already learned in the industry,” says

Baird dominates to win Highlands 101 Craig Baird and co-driver Michael Almond dominated the final round of the Australian Endurance Championship to win the Highlands 101 at Highlands Motorsport Park in Central Otago. It rounded off a remarkable weekend for the Kiwi racer who also claimed a first and second in the final Australian GT sprint races, also held at the event. It was a sweet victory for Baird who came desperately close to winning the Highlands 101 in 2014 when his co-driver Richard Muscat ran out of fuel 100 metres from the finish line allowing Tony Quinn and Garth Tander to claim the victory. “Two years ago, we thought we’d won it. We had a slight engine

the last part of the race and that left us two corners short of the finish line. To win with the same team, and with the same brand of car is very special.” Grant Denyer and Nathan Morcom claimed the 2016 Australian Endurance Championship despite limping home in 9th. Greg Murphy chased Baird home over the last 30 laps but never got close enough to mount a real challenge in Tony Quinn’s Aston Martin Vantage GT3. It was the first time Quinn hasn’t finished on the top of the podium after Tony’s back-to-back wins in 2013 (with Fabian Coulthard) and 2014 (Garth Tander) were followed up by Klark Quinn’s win last year with Shane van Gisbergen.

Gilmour ‘addicted’ to cross country rallying Emma Gilmour had the full cross country experience at the Portugal Baja, leaving her addicted to the challenge and hoping to be back for more. The Dunedin rally driver teamed up with South African co-driver Sandra Labuscagne to contest the 500km event in a Polaris off-road buggy as part of the French Xtreme Plus Team. Although circumstances conspired against them achieving the class podium they were on target for after day one of the two-day event, Emma says it was an achievement to reach the finish line.

It was a perfect weekend for young Pukekohe driver Liam Lawson at the opening round of the New Zealand Formula 1600 Championship held in adverse conditions at Timaru International Raceway. Also doubling as the second round of the South Island F1600 Championship (SIF1600), the 14-year-old set fastest lap in qualifying and won all three races. Local Christchurch driver Michael Collins was second fastest in qualifying and three times finished runner up to Lawson.

2017 Leadfoot Festival announces international competitors The Leadfoot Festival is a unique weekend bringing together a mix of classic cars, vintage motorcycles and motorsport drivers. The 150 acre, ocean-front and farm estate in Hahei, New Zealand, features a purposebuilt, mile-long driveway that winds through the property designed to be the perfect hill climb. Every year the Leadfoot Festival delivers above expectations in terms of the international drivers competing and the brilliantly, star-studded line-up for 2017 is no exception. Joining the record high number of 130 competitors at

the Waitangi weekend event in Hahei, Coromandel, are major motorsport icons from all around the world. In a major coup for the organisers, two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Al Unser Jr has signed up to drive at the festival on 4 & 5 February 2017. Also from the United States, professional super-star driver Tanner Foust is returning to the Leadfoot Festival, following his popular appearance there last year. Scottish-born rally legend Alister McRae will be back for another crack at Rod Millen’s immaculately prepared mile-long driveway, after

coming tantalisingly close to snatching victory from the Millen clan last year. While the high performance cars are exhilarating for the crowd, the Leadfoot Festival also attracts some exceptional period vehicles. The 1959 Old Yeller II Buick Special is one such car and it has a special story. Built in 1959 at the legendary Hollywood Motors by Max and Ina Balchowsky, this car known fondly as the ‘Junkyard Dog’, has been racing almost continuously since 1959, with only a short break of four years. First self-drive vehicle demonstration on NZ roads The country’s first official demonstration of an autonomous vehicle using New Zealand roads was on Friday November 18. The New Zealand Traffic Institute (Trafinz), Volvo, New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) and the Ministry of Transport came together to show how a self-driving vehicle will safely handle New Zealand’s road conditions. Car manufacturer Volvo demonstrated the technology on a 10-15km stretch of public road in Tauranga as part of the New Zealand Traffic Institute’s (Trafinz) transportation conference.

Transport minister Simon Bridges was one of the car’s passengers. Volvo Cars NZ general manager Coby Duggan says the vehicle self-drives using sophisticated technology to navigate the road – with driver interaction only required to periodically confirm the presence of the driver. John Goettler the Vice President of the New Zealand Local Authority Traffic Institute (Trafinz) says the technology has real applications for the future of transport within the New Zealand roading network.

Utes and SUVs driving record new vehicle market With one month of the calendar sales year left to go for new vehicle dealers, it is looking more than likely that the market will see a record number of passenger and commercial vehicles sold. Industry insiders are discussing possible figures of more than 143,000 units beating last year’s record of more than 134,234 new vehicle sales if the market remains at its current level of performance which is more than 8% ahead. New SUVs and utes are driving the increased new car market numbers, while new passenger car sales are holding steady. Source: autotalk.co.nz

Data collected through connected cars will present automakers with big business opportunities and inherent risks, according to a new KPMG report. KPMG’s national automotive leader, Gary Silberg, notes while Original Equipment Manufacturers can use data collected through connected vehicles to optimise performance, reliability and safety, failure to get cybersecurity right could have a lasting impact on a company’s brand.

Samsung pours $11.2B into Harman acquisition Samsung Electronics will buy technology company Harman for $8 billion (NZD$11.2 billion), marking a major push into the auto electronics market. The transaction, which is the biggest overseas acquisition ever by a South Korean company, highlights Samsung’s efforts to break into the high-barrier automotive industry where it has little track record. It also marks a strategic shift for the electronics company, which has previously shunned big acquisitions. The purchase of the US-based maker of connected car and
