WHINCUP SET TO CONTINUE IN SUPERCARS
Don’t count out seven-time champion Jamie Whincup, who is set to continue his driving career at the Red Bull Holden Racing Team into 2021. Previous speculation of his impending retirement at the end of 2020 has been squashed after the 37-year-old announced his intention to stay competing in the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship. There is no doubt that he may be in the twilight of his Supercars career with more off-track commitments including taking a 15 percent ownership stake in Triple Eight and joining Supercars’ rule-making Commission. Whincup remains one of the category’s leading drivers, winning four of the last six races of 2019 and then winning the opening race of the 2020 season, in Adelaide. “My addiction for racing, speed and trying to beat my mates to the finish line started when I was seven years old,” said Whincup in a statement on the Red Bull HRT website announcing his extension. “Any thought of finishing full-time driving this year doesn’t sit well with me. While my full focus is on this year’s championship and delivering results for our teammates, sponsors and Red Bull Holden fan base, it’s great to know that all the fun will continue well into 2021.” Whincup’s decision will give the Red Bull HRT an unchanged driver line-up next season with teammate Shane van Gisbergen locking in a one-year contract extension for 2021. AUTOCARE 2020 POSTPONED TO OCTOBER Autocare 2020, Australia’s automotive education and training convention has been postponed until October. The escalation of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) health crisis triggered an unprecedented government and public response. The current circumstances have led to the status of Autocare 2020, and the original date of 19-20 June 2020, needing to be urgently re-evaluated. The Australian Automotive Aftermarket Association (AAAA) board of directors held a special meeting on March 16 to fully consider options for the Autocare 2020 convention. After a thorough evaluation, the decision was made to postpone the event. The rescheduled Autocare dates are Friday and Saturday, 30 – 31 October 2020. The convention location will remain at the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre. “The AAAA takes the health and safety of our members, staff and event sponsors, exhibitors and speakers, very seriously and as a result we have made the difficult decision to postpone Autocare 2020,” says AAAA chief executive officer Stuart Charity. “The new dates will allow Autocare 2020 to run at a time that provides the best opportunity for our industry and the wider community to enjoy this fantastic event, in a safe and healthy environment.”
All Autocare 2020 conference stream registrations, exhibitor and sponsorship commitments will roll over to the new Autocare 2020 dates. Hosted by the AAAA, the Autocare 2020 program will continue to provide industry leading speakers and exhibitors and address the latest global trends in the aftermarket industry. “We acknowledge the significant commitment by speakers, sponsors and exhibitors and share our appreciation for their patience as Autocare 2020 arrangements pivot to meet the new dates.” “With the support of event organiser International Exhibition & Conference Group, and the auto aftermarket community, we can look forward to bringing the industry together in October. We thank you in advance for your support and understanding at this difficult time,” says Charity. Source: autotalk.com.au

WORKPLACE HEALTH AND SAFETY SHOW POSTPONED The Australian Institute of Health and Safety (AIHS) and IEC Group have postponed the Workplace Health & Safety Show in Melbourne which was scheduled for May 27-28 2020 following the ban on all non-essential indoor gatherings of more than 100 people, as a result of COVID-19.
Together with the #SAFETYSCAPE Convention, the event is a platform for health and safety professional across the country to share information and access resources to improve the safety of Australians at work. AIHS and IEC Group are currently working with the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC) to confirm new dates for early 2021. They will also be in contact with partners, exhibitors, and visitors over the coming days to discuss how the parties can continue working together to create environments where people are excited to connect, communicate, and collaborate.
“These necessary restrictions are in place to protect all of us including those who are more vulnerable in the community. Together we need to support one another and remember that physical isolation does not mean social isolation; I encourage everyone to use the technology available to you to check in with colleagues, friends and family, says IEC Group Pty Ltd chief executive officer Marie Kinsella. AIHS is in the process of building a virtual #SAFETYSCAPE Convention to be held at the end of May 2020. This virtual event will include opportunities for exhibitors to engage with large numbers of delegates through an online experience. Further information will be shared about this innovation as this concept is developed. Source: autotalk.com.au

TOYOTA AUSTRALIA THWARTS SUPPLIER SELLING COUNTERFEIT GRILLES Toyota Australia has succeeded in stopping a large body parts and panels supplier from importing, advertising and selling counterfeit grilles in contravention of Australian laws. Investigation and action by Toyota led to SSS Auto Parts withdrawing the counterfeit grilles from sale, offering a refund to purchasers, forfeiting remaining stock and paying compensation to Toyota. Toyota Australia’s brand protection manager Fabiola Dos Santos says consumers could have been misled into believing the grilles were genuine, especially as they illegally displayed the Toyota trade mark. Dos Santos says SSS Auto Parts had also breached Toyota’s copyright through the unlicensed use of Toyota-owned images on its website. “Toyota will act decisively whenever counterfeit parts are being sold to Australian consumers, and to prevent the use of forged Toyota packaging, markings and branding,” she says. “We devote significant financial, technical and human resources to develop genuine parts and accessories that offer optimal
performance, durability and safety benefits to customers.” “Our grilles are designed, engineered and tested to allow sufficient air flow to the radiator, protecting the engine from overheating. They are manufactured to Toyota’s stringent quality and durability standards – an assurance that cannot be offered by anyone selling counterfeit parts. “Some people mistakenly think that buying counterfeit auto parts is harmless and a simple way to get components at a lower price.” “But the impact can be far worse than people realise as there is zero testing, no legal regulation and very little recourse for consumers if the part is ineffective or unsafe.” Dos Santos says Toyota Australia is working with the Australian Border Force to identify and seize counterfeit parts given the growing number entering the Australian market.
“Consumers should not assume they are buying a genuine part, even if it comes in a branded box or has a Toyota label.” “The best way to avoid purchasing a counterfeit item is to buy Toyota Genuine parts and accessories directly from an authorised Toyota dealer,” she says.

INDUSTRY NEWS
NEW KIA SORENTO ARRIVING IN JUNE Kia has unveiled its fourth generation Sorento SUV which will be available with diesel, petrol/electric hybrid and PHEV powertrains for global markets.
It sits at the heart of Kia’s reinvigorated global SUV line-up, which also includes the Seltos and Sportage. More than 44,000 Sorento models have been sold in Australia since the model was introduced in January 2003. “The Sorento’s evolution over the last 18 years echoes that of the Kia brand as a whole,” says Kia Motors Europe chief operating officer Emilio Herrera.
“While the car was initially launched in 2002 as a utilitarian all-terrain vehicle, the fourthgeneration Sorento has been transformed into something more desirable. It is an important model for Kia, particularly now that it also represents the first use of electrified power in our flagship SUV.”
The new Sorento will be available in Australia with a choice of seven exterior paint finishes, and 17-, 18-, 19- and 20-inch aluminium alloy wheels, depending on trim grade. Material quality is enhanced, with a cabin that blends metallic trim, leather upholstery, and embossed satin-effect surfaces. In Australia the Sorento will be available (grade dependent) with embossed black cloth, leather appointed black cloth and black quilted Nappa leather. Kia’s newest SUV will be available with hybrid power – a first for a Sorento – and buyers will eventually able to choose from hybrid or plug-in hybrid variants.
Paired with a larger body to maximise cargo and luggage space, the platform ensures the Sorento is one of the most versatile and spacious three-row SUVs on the road.
The Sorento Hybrid is powered by a new ‘Smartstream’ electrified powertrain, pairing a 1.6-litre T-GDi (turbocharged gasoline direct injection) with a 1.49 kWh lithium-ion polymer battery pack and 44.2 kW electric motor. The intelligent packaging of the Sorento’s new platform means the battery pack can be located under the floor beneath the front passenger, with minimal impact on cabin or luggage space.
Innovative interior packaging means it can offer all this while accommodating Kia’s new ‘Smartstream’ electrified powertrains – the first time that hybrid power has featured in the Sorento line-up (not for Australia at launch).
Power is sent through the six-speed automatic transmission via a transmission-mounted electrical device, allowing the full power of the engine and motor to be transferred in parallel with minimal loss of energy.
This will be Kia’s most high-tech car yet, thanks to its progressive connectivity, driver assistance and infotainment technologies. Its twin digital displays deliver advanced graphics, new telematics features and full wireless smartphone connectivity.
The Sorento Hybrid will go on-sale in select European markets from launch, with others to follow later in 2020. The new Sorento will also be available as a Plug-in Hybrid variant from late in 2020.
The new model is the result of a collaborative design effort between all three studios within Kia’s worldwide design network, in Korea, Europe and North America.
The new four-cylinder 2.2-litre ‘Smartstream’ diesel engine produces 148kW and 440 Nm torque. The newer engine is 19.5 kg lighter compared to that found in the third-generation Sorento and it is paired with Kia’s new eight-speed wet doubleclutch transmission (8DCT).
Its bodywork incorporates sharp lines and creases – noticeably more sculpted than its more round-edged predecessor. The front of the Sorento evolves with a new interpretation of Kia’s hallmark ‘tiger nose’ grille, displaying a wider shape which organically wraps around the integrated headlamps on each side. The headlamps themselves feature a new ‘tiger eye’ LED daytime running light, adding extra focus to the design. It is 1900 mm wide, 10 mm wider than the third-generation Sorento and is 10 mm longer (now 4810 mm), yet it features shorter front and rear overhangs. The additional length is found in the wheelbase, which has grown by 35 mm to 2,815 mm.
Fuel efficiency and emissions data for the Sorento’s new powertrains will be announced closer to the car’s European on-sale date later in 2020. Like its predecessor, the new Sorento will be built for Europe and Australia, at Kia’s Hwasung manufacturing facility in Korea. Australian sales of diesel models will commence in June while the petrol models will be available in the fourth quarter of this year. As with all Kia models it will be covered by the 7-Year unlimited kilometre Warranty, 7-Year Capped Price Service and 7-Year Roadside Assist. Source: autotalk.com.au

VOLVOS CATCH A TRAIN TO CUT EMISSIONS Volvo Cars is significantly cutting CO2 emissions in its logistics operations by transporting cars between factories and new car depots by train instead of truck.
By using rail transport between its Belgian factory and a depot in northern Italy, it has reduced CO2 emissions by almost 75%. And between Belgium and a depot in Austria, it almost halved emissions by switching to rail transport. Both initiatives are part of Volvo’s climate action plan to reduce its carbon footprint per car by 40% between 2018 and 2025; that will require a 25% cut in operational emissions, including logistics. The 2025 plan is a step towards Volvo Cars’ ambition of becoming climate neutral by 2040.
Yarra Valley Motor Group are located in Croydon, Lilydale & Ringwood, Victoria Get Rewarded when you purchase eligible Nissan, Renault, MG & Suzuki Parts Ringwood Nissan & MG Ringwood (03) 8833 9999 Yarra Valley Nissan Lilydale (03) 9735 5555 Eastern Suzuki & Renault Croydon (03) 9725 5555
Volvo is also using rail transport more widely in China and the USA. Trains take cars from its Chinese factories to the Belgian port of Ghent twice a week. Other trains deliver new Volvos to regional depots in China and in Russia. In North America, the company’s South Carolina factory sends cars by train to cities across country, replacing dozens of trucks each week. Volvo Cars climate action plan is in line with the 2015 Paris climate agreement which seeks to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.
Volvo says all-out electrification isn’t enough to reduce the company’s environmental impact so it’s tackling carbon emissions in its factories, its wider operations, its supply chain and through recycling and reuse of materials. Its commitment to electrified cars is reflected by its recently launched Recharge car line which use all-electric or hybrid powertrains. Source: autotalk.com.au

MERCEDES-BENZ AUSTRALIA INTRODUCES FIVE-YEAR WARRANTY ON CARS AND VANS Mercedes-Benz cars, vans and utes sold to Australian customers from 1 April 2020, are set to be covered under the terms of a new five-year manufacturer’s warranty. A grace period will apply to purchasers of new MercedesBenz vehicles before 1 April, with the implementation of the new warranty structure to be backdated to include vehicles sold on or after 1 March 2020. The new Mercedes-Benz passenger cars warranty replaces the three-year warranty structure and covers the entire passenger car range, including Mercedes-AMG models, the all-electric EQC and plug-in hybrid variants, all of which will receive a five-year / unlimited kilometre warranty when used solely for private purposes. Passenger cars used for commercial applications – for example, a taxi or ride- share vehicle – will be covered by a five-year / 200,000 km warranty. The supply of complimentary roadside assistance will be extended to five years for cars, vans and utes, whether the vehicle is used for private or commercial purposes. Mercedes-Benz managing director Horst von Sanden says introducing a standard five-year manufacturer’s warranty reinforced the company’s enduring commitment to enhancing the customer ownership experience. “With a five-year manufacturer’s warranty across our entire cars and vans range supported by our existing capped price servicing and service plan portfolio, customers can have increased flexibility and certainty throughout their journey with Mercedes-Benz,” he says.
Mercedes-Benz vans and utes will also step up from a standard three-year warranty to five years. The V-Class, X-Class and Marco Polo variants will be covered by a five-year / unlimited kilometre warranty, with five years of complimentary roadside assistance and a three-year / unlimited kilometre warranty for the 12-volt battery. Where the above variants are used in a commercial application, a five-year / 250,000 km warranty applies (3 years/250,000km for 12 volt battery). The Vito, Valente and Sprinter vans are classed as commercial vehicles, and receive a five-year / 250,000 km warranty, five years’ Roadside Assistance and three-year / 250,000 km coverage for 12-volt batteries. Mercedes-Benz Vans Australia Pacific managing director Diane Tarr says the new warranty structure would provide greater certainty for fleets, owner-drivers and private users alike.
“We understand our commercial customers in particular are looking closely at whole-of-life costs, and that transparency in servicing and running costs is crucial. The new fiveyear manufacturer’s warranty further solidifies the value proposition in our compelling product line-up,” she says. Source: autotalk.com.au

PERONI ENDS FIA F3 PRESEASON TESTING ON TOP Alexander Peroni was in excellent shape ahead of the 2020 FIA Formula 3 campaign, scoring the fastest time overall in pre-season testing on the final day at the Sakhir Circuit in Bahrain. The Campos racer’s time of 1:46.173 could not be matched across the three days, and he finished above Brit Jake Hughes and fellow Australian Jack Doohan. The Bahrain International Circuit was much clearer on the final day of testing, as the cars returned in warm, sunny conditions – a stark comparisons to the dust and wind experienced on day 2. Hughes wasted no time in getting a fast lap under his belt, touring at 1:47.312 inside of the first 15 minutes. The Briton was backed up by Enzo Fittipaldi and day 2’s quickest man, Liam Lawson. Peroni clocked up 30 laps as focus shifted to long-runs and race simulations. With 45 minutes to go, the faster laps began to fly in. The PREMA machine of Frederik Vesti went top, with the day’s first time of under 1m 47s, ahead of David Schumacher and Hughes. The times took a further tumble as focus shifted from race runs to qualifying simulations for sections of the grid. Doohan, Hughes and Peroni all took turns at the top, with the laps creeping towards 1m 46s. Peroni sets himself up nicely for his second season in F3, with the fastest lap overall. The Campos racer finished ahead of Hughes and Doohan, with Sargeant and Richard Verschoor completing the top five. Sebastian Fernandez, Vesti, Alexander Smolyar, Novalak and Kari completed the top 10. Source: talkmotorsport.com
MCLAUGHLIN LIKELY TO COMPETE IN MORE 2020 INDYCAR RACES Supercars current title holder Scott McLaughlin has been buoyed by his recent testing in a Team Penske IndyCar, before the start of the 2020 Supercars season. McLaughlin will compete in one NTT IndyCar Series race in May, the GMR Grand Prix at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on the road course layout. Now there is speculation that he will take part in several races this season, with the likelihood of racing on an oval. This has been confirmed by Team Penske president Tim Cindric. “Throughout the year hopefully we’ll be able to give him some opportunities and hopefully be able to run him in
16
more than just one (IndyCar) race,” said Cindric. “We’ll see where it is. With that process, he doesn’t have to leave Supercars to understand whether it’s something he wants to do and for us to understand how we can make that happen.” After going third quickest in the official pre-season test at Circuit of the Americas, McLaughlin went on to conduct a rookie oval test at Texas Motor Speedway. First, he will focus on the 2020 Virgin Australia Supercars Championship. Source: talkmotorsport.com

LOOKING AFTER YOUR MENTAL HEALTH DURING THE CORONAVIRUS OUTBREAK Try to maintain perspective
While it is reasonable for people to be concerned about the outbreak of coronavirus, try to remember that medical, scientific and public health experts around the world are working hard to contain the virus, treat those affected and develop a vaccine as quickly as possible. Find a healthy balance in relation to media coverage
Being exposed to large volumes of negative information can heighten feelings of anxiety. While it’s important to stay informed, you may find it useful to limit your media intake if it is upsetting you or your family. Access good quality information
It’s important to get accurate information from credible sources such as Health Direct, WHO and Smartraveller. This will also help you maintain perspective and feel more in control. Try to maintain a practical and calm approach
Widespread panic can complicate efforts to manage the outbreak effectively. Do your best to stay calm and follow official advice, particularly around observing good hygiene habits. Try not to make assumptions
To contribute to a sense of community wellbeing, try to remember that the coronavirus can affect anyone regardless of their nationality or ethnicity and remember that those with the disease have not done anything wrong. Children and young people
Families and caregivers of children and young people should discuss news of the virus with those in their care in an open and honest way. Try to relate the facts without causing alarm, and in a way that is appropriate for their age and temperament. It is important to listen to any questions they may have, to let them know that they are safe and that it’s normal to feel concerned. Support for those experiencing financial hardship
As the ongoing spread of the coronavirus continues to affect the global economy, many people in Australia are losing jobs, livelihoods and financial stability. For information and services provided by the Australian government, please visit Services Australia. If you are experiencing financial hardship, National Debt Helpline offers free financial counselling.
Managing your mental health while in self-isolation or quarantine •
There are a number of ways to support your mental health during periods of self-isolation or quarantine.
•
Remind yourself that this is a temporary period of isolation to slow the spread of the virus.
•
Remember that your effort is helping others in the community avoid contracting the virus.
•
Stay connected with friends, family and colleagues via email, social media, video conferencing or telephone.
•
Connect with others via the Beyond Blue forums thread: Coping during the coronavirus outbreak.
•
Engage in healthy activities that you enjoy and find relaxing.
•
Keep regular sleep routines and eat healthy foods.
•
Try to maintain physical activity.
•
Establish routines as best possible and try to view this period as a new experience that can bring health benefits.
•
For those working from home, try to maintain a healthy balance by allocating specific work hours, taking regular breaks and, if possible, establishing a dedicated work space.
•
Avoid news and social media if you find it distressing.

VACC: AUTOMOTIVE BUSINESSES MUST MAXIMISE SOCIAL DISTANCING The Victorian Automobile Chamber of Commerce (VACC) is warning automotive businesses to take all care to maximise social distancing in the running of their business following the Step 1 measures imposed by premier Daniel Andrews. The Premier’s announcement focused on limiting people’s attendance at social venues, including: •
Pubs, registered and licenced clubs (excluding bottle shops attached to these venues), hotels (excluding accommodation)
•
Gyms and indoor sporting venues
•
Cinemas, entertainment venues, casinos, and night clubs
•
Restaurants and cafes will be restricted to takeaway and/or home delivery
•
Religious gatherings, places of worship, weddings or funerals (in enclosed spaces and other than very small groups and where the 1 person per 4 square metre rule applies).
There are no fixed timelines attached to these restrictions being lifted. “Unless automotive businesses fall into one of the above categories they can continue with the running of their businesses but with all care taken to maximise social distancing. Where staff can work from home employers should consider if this is an option for them,” says VACC. Source: autotalk.com.au
CART BUDDY! The world is in the grips of a pandemic, and while the coronavirus will not bring serious harm to a lot of us, it does pose a potentially deadly risk to the elderly, sick, disabled, and immunocompromised.
Show your support
You can use your points to donate to Beyond Blue or the Kindness Factory via the Rewards Shop. Both of these charities are supporting those in need during these challenging times.
Many have already chosen to self-isolate, and while that limits the chance of infection, it also means they cannot access essential supermarket items and pharmacy products. If you're one of those people, or know someone who needs a set of helping hands, email admin@kindnessfactory.Com with your name, phone number and suburb you live in, and we will put you in touch with a volunteer who will buy your groceries for you and provide nocontact delivery.
