NTT IndyCar Series to use 100% renewable race fuel Beginning in 2023, Shell will produce a new race fuel for the NTT INDYCAR SERIES. This new product consists of a blend of second-generation ethanol derived from sugarcane waste and other biofuels to create a fuel that is 100% comprised of feedstocks categorized as “renewable” under the applicable regulatory frameworks.

The fuel developed by Shell is set to make the NTT INDYCAR SERIES the first United States-based motorsports series to power racing with 100% renewable race fuel3 and enables at least 60% greenhouse gas emissions reduction compared to fossil-based gasoline4.

The second-generation ethanol will be sourced from Raízen, a Brazilian Joint-Venture created in 2011 by Shell and Cosan.

Raízen is one of the largest sugarcane ethanol producers in the

world and owner of the first commercial second-generation ethanol plant.

Next Gen NASCAR crash tested using robots from AB Dynamics Leading automotive test solution supplier AB Dynamics has partnered with NASCAR to conduct a driverless, on-track crash test of its Next Gen race car that is running in the 2022 Cup Series. The test vehicle was driven at high speed to a preprogrammed course by driving robots into the banking wall at Talladega Superspeedway, in Alabama.

The aim was to test the safety of the vehicle and the impact on the driver in this type of accident, which is a common crash scenario in the series.

“The challenge was trying to get this extremely complex machine to do a very precise test without a human driver piloting the car,” said Craig Hoyt, AB Dynamics Business Development Manager.

“There is no better data than replicating crash tests

in a real environment and our robots enable us to do that accurately and repeatedly.”

The test requirement was to drive the race car at 130 mph to a precise impact point into the SAFER (Steel And Foam

Energy Reduction) barrier, hitting it at an angle of 24 degrees.

To control the vehicle’s speed and direction it was fitted with steering, shifting and pedal (throttle, brake and clutch) robots.

“This is a truly innovative way to test the safety of vehicles in motorsport,” said John Patalak, Managing Director, Safety Engineering of NASCAR. “The data we obtained from the test was extremely important and was not possible to get from any crash test facilities at the time. The test provided valuable information for correlation with our computer crash simulations and confirmed that the predicted vehicle impact performance from the simulation was duplicated in this real-world crash test.”

Tim Cahill backed team enters Extreme E XE Sports Group has announced it will enter Season 3 of Extreme E, the sport for purpose electric off-road series which uses motorsport to promote sustainability and diversity.

GMSV announces MY23 Silverado 1500 range GMSV has announced updates and enhancements which will feature on the new model year 2023 Silverado 1500, including the addition of a new flagship model.

“Aussies have responded with enthusiasm to the arrival of Chevrolet Silverado with the new full-size truck becoming a favourite for people who demand the benchmark when it comes to off-roading, long-distance touring and towing,” GMSV director Joanne Stogiannis says.

“Chevrolet’s new flagship off-road truck and first-ever Silverado 1500 ZR2 is the next chapter in off-roading, and it’s coming to Australia and New Zealand.”

Amongst feature highlights, the new ZR2 model comes complete with front and rear e-lockers and Multimatic DSSV dampers, 33-inch mud terrain tyres and new high-approach steel cut front bumper designed for off-road strength, durability and clearance.

The Silverado 1500 ZR2 and LTZ Premium will continue to feature the 6.2-litre V8 paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission.

The LTZ Premium will come with key enhancements, including a redesigned front-fascia complete with new daytime running lights, as well as significant interior and technology updates.

A fully reimagined interior contains an electronic transmission shift controller now located on the centre console and a 13.4inch diagonal colour touchscreen complemented by a 12.3inch configurable instrument cluster.

All Australian line up for B-Quik Absolute Racing in Thailand Super Series B-Quik Absolute Racing has announced an all-Australian line up for the #27 Audi R8 LMS GT3 EVO 2 for Thailand Super Series 2022 with Daniel Bilski teaming up with Philip Massoud.

This will be Daniel’s ninth season with the team which has seen numerous successes including the Super Car GT3 Drivers’ title in 2020, GT3-Am Title in 2019, winning both the Audi Cup ‘AM’ and ‘Masters’ championships as well being part of the winning crew in the 2016 Sepang 12 Hours.

Over half a million dollars raised for families in need The 2021 Dunga Derby proved to be a raging success, with $510,000 raised for Queensland families facing tough times.

GetGenuine member Pialba Smash Repairs are a regular participant in the Fraser Coast Dunga Derby, proudly reaching their fundraising target of $5000 raised.

Pialba Smash Repairs have enjoyed entering the Dunga Derby adventures every year since it all began in 2015. They say they will continue to join in every year and chip away at their already incredible donation tally – currently over $37,000.

In the first 7 years from 2015 to 2021, the Dunga Derby has raised just over $1,800,000. To date, 144 Fraser Coast families have received assistance or financial support from Rally for a Cause and last financial year, $337,096.00 in funds were approved to provide assistance to eligible recipients in the Fraser Coast and Sunshine Coast regions.

My Vegepod has been a revelation for growing herbs, never have I seen such lush, green and sturdy herb growth; even soft herbs like coriander, which is notoriously fragile to grow, are booming. So, here’s a little segment to get you inspired to grow herbs in your Vegepod and reap the benefits in the kitchen.

I’ve got an entire medium pod dedicated to herbs. It is probably my most important and favourite Vegepod, providing flavour bombs that elevate dishes to the next level. Depending on the size of your backyard or alfresco, small or medium Vegepods are perfect for easy access herbs that can be placed just outside your kitchen or next to the BBQ. Having them right there within arm’s reach whilst cooking allows you to create quick condiments and sauces to compliment any dish.

Here’s a quickfire list of examples of how to use your fresh herbs: • Cooking steak? You can’t go past an Argentinian style chimichurri using oregano and parsley.

• Fish and chips? Fresh tartar sauce loaded with dill and parsley.

• Nam jim, with a punch of a good punch of coriander, is my go-to Thai style dipping sauce or salad dressing • The allrounder – Italian style salsa verde using any combination of parsley, basil, or mint, works perfectly whether you’re cooking seafood, chicken, beef or vegetables.

Storing & Preserving If you’re using any of the above sauces, they will hold in the fridge for 1-2 weeks if they are stored in an airtight container or jar.

This recipe uses another method not mentioned above but one you will all be familiar with – pesto. Traditionally, the authentic Pesto Genovese from Italy uses only basil leaves, which is the flavour most people would be familiar with. However, like the sauces above, you can play around with herbs depending on what you have coming out of the Vegepod.

In this instance, I had an abundance of rocket which has quickly become my go-to base for my everyday pesto.

In this rendition, I have added herbs that were thriving in early winter - parsley, chives, and tarragon.

This scroll is the perfect spring starter to be shared in the middle of the table – pulled apart and served with a bowl of soup or slow cooked casserole.

Alternatively, a great way to preserve your herbs for months is to freeze them. Foster joins Triple Eight JMR for full-season Fanatec GT World Challenge Asia Australian Nick Foster and Prince Jefri Ibrahim won the season opening Fanatec GT World Challenge Asia Powered by AWS race at Sepang after Triple Eight JMR’s #99 Mercedes-AMG picked its way through from fifth on the grid.

The 2018 championship runner-up Nick Foster made his long awaited Fanatec GT World Challenge Asia Powered by AWS return this year after joining forces with Triple Eight JMR. The Australian is partnering another driver with existing series experience, Prince Jefri Ibrahim, whose previously announced one-off entry at Sepang has increased to fullseason participation.

As such, Triple Eight JMR’s involvement now features two Mercedes-AMG GT3s at all six events. Its other car, shared by another member of the Johor Royal Family and Jefri’s brother – Prince Abu Bakar Ibrahim – as well as Jazeman Jaafar, was confirmed in February.

In the second race of the opening round, it was Adrian D’Silva and Kiwi Earl Bamber who overcame their 10-second Success Penalty to take the victory. EBM Giga Racing’s Porsches were denied a one-two by the second Triple Eight JMR’s entry of Prince Abu Ibrahim and Jazeman Jaafar whose Mercedes-AMG pulled clear of Setiawan Santoso and Reid Harker’s 911 during the second stint. Foster and Ibrahim came home in fifth.

Foster has already raced the Mercedes-AMG GT3 in Europe and at the Bathurst 12 Hour with Triple Eight, while his recent experience also extends to finishing third in 2020’s Asian Le Mans Series (LMP2).

Sepang held the opening round in late May with the next outing at Suzuka, then Fuji, Sugo and Okayama. Mandalika in Indonesia caps off the full six-event calendar in October.

Tripe Eight confirm Bathurst wildcard entry Triple Eight Race Engineering have announced the return of their Supercheap Auto-backed wildcard for the 2022 Bathurst 1000. One of the most iconic names associated with the Bathurst 1000, Craig Lowndes, will team up with Triple Eight’s Super2 young-gun, Declan Fraser for this year’s Great Race, with the latter making his Supercars debut at the famous Mount Panorama Circuit.

The wildcard features the iconic #888, with the current livery to remain for the team’s upcoming test days, before transitioning to its Bathurst 1000 race livery at a later date.

It will be Lowndes’ 29th start in the Great Race, a race which he has won a staggering seven times, with his most recent win coming in 2018, the same year he retired from full-time Supercars racing.

motorsport as a team sponsor 25 years ago and were the naming rights sponsor of the Bathurst 1000 from 2005 to 2020.

The team’s 2021 wildcard entry was piloted by Russel Ingall and Broc Feeney, which set the record for the oldest-youngest driver pairing in history.

The Supercheap Auto wildcard will be the team’s third entry at the Bathurst 1000, alongside Red Bull Ampol Racing’s #88 and #97. Garth Tander will return as codriver of the #97 alongside Shane van Gisbergen, while Jamie Whincup will make his highly anticipated return to Supercars, co-driving with rookie Broc Feeney in the #88 entry.

The Bathurst 1000 will be the only two-driver endurance event in the 2022 Supercars season on October 6-9.

Murphy and Stanaway test for Bathurst return Four-time Bathurst 1000 winner Greg Murphy and compatriot Richie Stanaway made their return to the track almost one year to the day that they announced their comeback when Erebus Motorsport confirmed the pairing would field a Boost Mobile-backed wildcard at the Bathurst 1000.

The #51 wildcard rolled out a new-look test livery, after an initial design was unveiled last October to contest the 2021 running of the Great Race. The test at Winton Raceway marked the duo’s first time behind the wheel since their wildcard campaign was announced last June.

Murphy returns to the field after an eight-year hiatus from racing and three years since stepping into a Supercar, meanwhile Stanaway makes his comeback since retiring from full-time competition at the end of 2019.

The test is the first of three official test days for the Bathurst wildcard, with two additional tests scheduled for August 16 and September 20. The 2022 Bathurst 1000 will run at Mount Panorama from October 6 – 9.

BMW iX to test 965km range battery BMW will test an iX electric SUV with a claimed 965km range enabled by a new battery chemistry from Our Next Energy (ONE), Electrek reports.

It says Michigan-based energy storage company ONE has announced it will test its Gemini battery in the BMW iX, the prototype test vehicle reportedly expected to be ready later this year.

ONE says the battery pack uses a dual battery chemistry with part of the pack for power delivery (LiFePoc) and the rest for energy storage (LiMnO).

Gemini’s technology aims to reduce lithium use by 20%, graphite by 60% and to minimise nickel and cobalt use, leading to more sustainable energy storage technology which can reduce environmental impact, ONE adds.

“We plan to pack twice as much energy into batteries, so EVs can easily handle long-distance driving in real-world conditions,”

Kia EV6 and VW Multivan PHEV get top ANCAP safety ratings The full five safety stars have been awarded by the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) to all variants of the Kia EV6, plus the Volkswagen Multivan PHEV (people mover).

All single and dual motor variants of the Kia EV6 battery electric vehicle (BEV) are covered by the five-star ANCAP safety rating. Good scores were achieved across all key areas of assessment, with full points scored for the driver in both the side impact and oblique pole tests, and for child occupants in the frontal offset test. Marginal performance, however, was recorded for the driver’s chest and lower leg in the frontal offset (MPDB) test, ANCAP reports.

“The Kia EV6 is equipped with the range of collision avoidance systems we’ve come to expect in today’s five-star cars, and it performed particularly well for its ability to prevent collisions with cyclists, and oncoming vehicles in avoidance tests simulating intersection turns,” says ANCAP chief executive Carla Hoorweg.

The VW Multivan plug-in hybrid (PHEV) – introduced to New Zealand consumers this month – becomes the fourth people mover assessed under ANCAP’s 2020-2022 protocols.

Apple CarPlay to take over digital cluster, climate controls The next big Apple CarPlay update is set to expand beyond the confines of the proverbial central touchscreen, according to new information and images released by Apple.

The update will see Apple CarPlay connectivity trickle outwards from the infotainment screen to include the digital cluster, climate control, and other functions in selected vehicles.

This will see Apple CarPlay being used to display key driving information, like a vehicle’s speedometer and fuel gauge, where previously it was only used for the functions in a vehicle’s centre screen and features such as audio and satnav.

In Apple’s own imagery showing what the system will look like, Apple CarPlay can be seen showing the satnav in the digital cluster, speed, the fuel gauge, fuel economy, oil temperature, shifter position, trip information, climate controls, and more.

The updated CarPlay is scheduled to debut in 2023 in selected vehicles, although it’s unclear whether this named date is a launch date or a date of sale.

It’s expected that the system will not be ‘backwards compatible’ with vehicles that support the current iteration of

Apple CarPlay, and will instead only be compatible with new vehicles built to specifically accommodate the software.

Apple boasts that the system will be customisable, allowing users to opt for minimalist and futuristic layouts, or on the flipside to select layouts that look more like the binnacle of a traditional car.

Numerous car brands appear to already be preparing their future products for this technology, with Apple naming 14 brands that will carry the new CarPlay system.

Those brands are Acura, Audi, Ford, Honda, Infiniti, Jaguar, Land Rover, Lincoln, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Polestar, Porsche, Renault, and Volvo.

Curiously, the list includes some Volkswagen Group brands (Audi, Porsche), but not Volkswagen themselves.

The mention of Volvo, Polestar, and Ford meanwhile shows that each brand has a ‘buck each way’, with each having previously confirmed plans to roll out digital architecture supplied by Google and its Android Auto system.
