QUEENSLAND EVENT ADDED FOR TA2 NORTHERN SERIES QUEENSLAND EVENT ADDED FOR TA2 NORTHERN SERIES The PROMAXX Performance Exhausts TA2 Muscle Car Series will head to Queensland Raceway for an additional round of the Northern Series at the 2 Days of Thunder at the end of June. The additional event at Queensland Raceway has been added to provide track time for TA2 racers due to the postponement of national TA2 events at Winton and Morgan Park because of border closures affecting interstate competitors. The Northern and Southern regional options were introduced earlier this year by the TA2 Muscle Car Series, combining the national rounds of the TA2 Muscle Car Series and selected rounds of the National Trans-Am Series. The regional series was created to ensure as much track time could be enjoyed by all competitors in case border closures made interstate travel difficult and follows on from the success

of the TA2 State of Origin rounds held last year during the COVID-19 border lockdowns. The 2 Days of Thunder event also marks a return to where it all began for the TA2 Muscle Car Series, with a demonstration held for the first five cars to arrive in the country back in 2016. The series that began racing at Queensland Raceway and Lakeside Park in its formative years has now grown to over 60 cars in the country with various national competition options catering for professional and amateur drivers alike. The event format will see cars first hit the track for general practice on Friday. A single 15-minute official practice session will take place on Saturday morning, followed by a 15-minute official Qualifying session and the first 12-lap sprint race in the afternoon. The final three 12-lap races will be held on Sunday. Source: talkmotorsport.co.nz

MCLAUGHLIN CONTINUES TO IMPRESS IN INDYCAR Scott McLaughlin continues to impress in his first year of competing in the NTT IndyCar Series, in the US. While he may have been unhappy with his 20th finish in the 105th running of the Indianapolis 500, the three-time Australia Supercars Championship title holder claimed the Rookie of the Year award at his first attempt at the Great Race. “I’m happy to get rookie of the year, that was the main goal, but I would have liked to have finished higher up, in that front group,” McLaughlin said. “I don’t know if I could have won the race, but I certainly felt I could at least (finish) in the top 10. I feel as though I could have been a factor, so it’s a bit of a bittersweet day.” A costly mistake on his second pitstop saw McLaughlin penalised for a pit-lane speeding infringement. “One mistake, it just eats you,” McLaughlin said. “You can’t make mistakes here, it needs to be a perfect day. That’s why experience is so important in this sport. It’s a place that really bites you, especially when you don’t see it coming. “I didn’t quite pump my brake pedal up and had a stone cold set of rotors coming into pit lane. I’m thankful that no one was hurt, as I came in there pretty hot.” Source: talkmotorsport.co.nz

AUSTRALIAN F3 DRIVER TESTS WITH TOYOTA RACING SERIES The New Zealand Castrol Toyota Racing Series made a giant step back to normality in May when it welcomed its first international driver since the pandemic for an official test of its FT60 car – and a successful day left all eager for more track time. Aussie young gun Ben Taylor made the quarantine-free trip to the Mike Pero Motorsport Park, Ruapuna, Christchurch, as the current Australian Formula 3 Championship leader and joined Kiwi Formula Ford champions James Penrose and Matthew McCutcheon as well as karting champion Jacob Douglas (main picture) for the test at the iconic Ruapuna track. For Taylor – who has been driving older style F3 technology than the TRS car, the FT60 was a major step up and the trip to New Zealand a memorable one. “It was straightforward to get here and the whole experience

has been a good one without worrying too much about any disruption from the pandemic,” said the seventeen-year-old.

“That has allowed me to focus on driving the car and I’ve really enjoyed it. It was an experience I won’t forget, and I loved every second I spent in the car.“ “It’s very different to my F3 back in Australia but that will help with my experience of driving different race cars. TGRNZ were so supportive and professional. The overall quality is a credit to them and I thank them for this amazing opportunity. I would really like to be able to do this series one day. I enjoyed New Zealand too. It’s a great country and the NZ people were so welcoming and nice.” Source: talkmotorsport.co.nz

TWO FROM TWO FOR MOLLY TAYLOR AND ROSBERG X RACING

Rosberg X Racing teammates Johan Kristoffersson, from Sweden, and Australian rally champion Molly Taylor reigned supreme once more at Extreme E’s second event in Lac Rose, Dakar, Senegal with the ever-impressive duo overcoming intense pressure from their adversaries to be crowned winners of the first-ever Ocean X Prix. “It’s so fantastic to have won,” commented Taylor. “Coming here, it felt like we had a lot of work to do over the weekend, and it certainly didn’t come easy, but with every session we just kept our heads down and just saw where we needed to improve, and everything totally paid off in the end.”

The tight and technical Ocean X Prix course was a hit with the all-star field of Extreme E drivers and yielded close racing and several options for alternate routes which were deployed throughout the two days of competition. It was Segi TV Chip Ganassi Racing’s Kyle LeDuc that took the Super Sector title, earning an extra five points for his team setting the fastest time of 1m50.891s - 1.289 seconds ahead of X44’s Sébastien Loeb.

The pioneering electric SUV, off-road racing series backed up its dramatic curtain-raising Desert X Prix at the beginning of April by delivering even more spectacular moments and overtakes against the stunning backdrop of the Atlantic Ocean. It was low tide but high drama in the grand final with two of the four cars retiring at the first corner, that left Rosberg X Racing to extend their championship lead and Veloce Racing to snatch a surprise result, bouncing back from their disastrous Desert X Prix. PIASTRI ON TOP IN FIA FORMULA 2 PREMA Racing wrapped up an extremely positive weekend at Baku in June with a double podium finish in the FIA Formula 2 Championship feature race at the Azerbaijani venue. Starting from P3, Oscar Piastri posted a brilliant second place. The Australian maximized his position in the early stages of the race with some razor-sharp moves and stayed clear of the many incidents and mishaps that happened out front. Despite suffering from a 5-second unsafe release penalty after his pitstop, his pace was fast enough to retain P2 and end up right behind the eventual race winner. “P2 in the feature race, I’m happy with that,” commented Piastri. “I think we didn’t quite have the pace to match Juri (vips) today, but we got good points, another trophy. We have been a bit lucky with the 5-second penalty, not doing anything in the end. I think the pace was strong, another solid weekend in terms of what we could control. I’m happy with how it went and now we will enjoy the break before Silverstone.” Russian teammate Robert Shwartzman finished behind him and delivered a great recovery from 10th place on the grid, setting

a strong and consistent pace that secured him his second podium finish of the weekend following yesterday’s race 1 win. Shwartzman is now back in full contention for the driver championship lead, sitting third behind Piastri. The combination of their efforts made sure for PREMA Racing to reclaim the lead of the team championship, while Piastri sits second overall on the drivers points table. The series now goes for a break before getting back for round 4 at Silverstone. Source: talkmotorsport.co.nz

INDUSTRY NEWS

MIXED REACTION TO NZ CLEAN CAR PROGRAM Mixed industry reaction There has been a mixed reaction from industry to the NZ Government’s clean car program which starts July 1, 2021. New battery electric vehicles (BEV) up to a capped retail price of NZ$80,000 will be eligible for a rebate of up to NZ$8625, while new plug hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) will be eligible for a rebate of NZ$5750. Grey import used BEVs and PHEVs will be eligible for a rebate of NZ$3450 and NZ$2300.

The level of rebate offered is significant, Crawford says. “It will address in part the lack of affordability new low emission vehicles cost compared to their internal combustion engine (ICE) equivalent models.

The clean car rebates end at 146g/km and the clean car fees begin at 192g/km, but new and used grey import vehicles in between will not attract rebates or penalties.

“The rules around allowing the discount when calculating fringe benefit tax (FBT) and depreciation will go some way to addressing barriers to uptake of low emission vehicles by businesses,” Crawford says.

Rebates for new and used grey import hybrid and other low emission vehicles will take effect from January 1, 2022, and at the same time clean car penalty fees for new vehicles which emit more than 192g/km will come into force.

Putting NZ on the EV map

There will be sliding scale of penalty fees on high CO2 emission vehicles. For example the Ford Ranger at 234g/km will attract a fee of $2780, and the Mitsubishi ASX at 195g/ km will attract a fee of $540.

12

The Motor Industry Association of New Zealand chief executive David Crawford says he’s pleased that the NZ Government brought in an interim rebate from July 1 for EVs and PHEVs while it puts in place the regulatory law required for a full feebate scheme which will come into effect in 2022.

Drive Electric NZ chair Mark Gilbert says that alongside new emissions standards this “puts New Zealand on the map for electric vehicle manufacturers”. “We are telling them that New Zealand is a serious market for electric vehicles and we want that supply,” Gilbert says.

The NZ Transport Agency (Waka Kotahi) will administer the program and will issue rebates and collect fees directly with the vehicle purchaser, not vehicle dealers.

“For consumers this incentive levels the playing field between electric and petrol. Any car bought today will be on our roads for the next 15 years. If that car is propelled by fossil fuels, it will keep polluting into the 2030s

It will issue rebates for BEV and PHEV which are first registered on or after 1 July 2021. Vehicles ordered or bought prior to July can still receive a rebate if buyers delay registering the vehicle to July 1.

“The fleets owned by businesses and governments can also move more quickly towards electric vehicles. They will be an important source of second-hand EVs for New Zealanders,” he says. Source: autotalk.com.au

CRICKS 2021 GOLF DAY

It was a pleasure to collaborate with Sofia from GetGenuine for our inaugural Subaru Loyalty Golf Day. We hosted 30 guests at Twin Waters Golf Club, kick starting the chilly morning with coffee, breakie burgers and promotional gift bags. Post breakfast, we joined our golf teams, posed for photos and then headed off, in the always fun, golf buggies, for an 18-hole round of golf (Ambrose style) and a lot of laughs. The teams consisted of panel beaters and Subaru mechanical professionals (a number of kangaroos and their joeys made an appearance too). Some guests were definitely more capable swinging the club than others, some improved the more times the drink cart came round. Emotions ran high as winners were announced, back at the club house, over well-deserved refreshments, and a beer or two. We selected rewards based on the business’s performance during the incentive. In particular, the most actively engaged customers of GG. We had a couple of ‘novelty’ prizes too for golfing prowess, nearest the pin and alike. To be honest there were no Greg Normans among us.

The bar stayed open, the beers continued flowing and a great time was had by all. As Sofia headed to the airport the shenanigans continued, some guys even stayed around for the Footy. What happens next though is off record, what goes on tour stays on tour. The result, a great fun experience, relationships cemented, all in all, a very successful day. My biggest question is how can I utilize Sofia next? The day wouldn’t have been the same without her. Get Genuine indeed made it an extra special day. VIP invite next year for sure. KIA REVEALS ALL-NEW FIFTH-GENERATION SPORTAGE

Kia has today revealed the official images of the all-new Sportage SUV. It is the result of a collaborative effort between Kia’s main global design network in Korea, Germany, the US, and China. Kia says its new design philosophy – Opposites United – is at the core of the all-new Sportage, influencing every aspect of its appearance and character. The principles of Opposites United will influence all future Kia designs. Opposites United is formed of five pillars: Joy for Reason, Power to Progress, Technology for Life, Tension for Serenity and Bold for Nature. The last pillar – Bold for Nature – has influenced the design creation of the all-new Sportage, embodying the natural world and creating a design identity that takes a daring, emotional, modern but organic form says Kia. “With the all-new Sportage, we didn’t simply want to take one step forward but instead move on to a different level in the SUV class. “When you see the all-new Sportage in person, with its sleek but powerfully dynamic stance, and when you sit inside the cabin with its beautifully detailed interior and first-class materials, you’ll see we have achieved those goals and set new benchmarks.” Kia Global Design Centre head and senior vice president Karim Habib says. New benchmarks for exterior SUV design The front of the all-new Sportage creates an instant impact and thought-provoking design statement with a detailed-orientated black grille graphic stretching across the width of the face. The elongated grille links Kia’s modern signature Tiger Nose grille – that acts as the visual focal point of the car – to the distinctive futuristic-styled boomerang-shaped DRLs (daytime running lamps), which in turn create solid boundary lines for the striking head lamps. The side profile of the all-new Sportage stays true to its sports utility DNA, with taut lines cutting across pure, clean but refined body surfaces that seamlessly blends the contrasting volumes together. Representing a first for the Sportage range, a black roof – a different colour paint option to the vehicle’s body – is now available with the new model. The addition of a chrome beltline kicks up onto the rear of the all-new Sportage and into

22

the D-pillar, creating harmonious lines with the rear spoiler. At the rear, the muscular swooping fastback flows into the rear lamps, forming the outline of the rear lamp graphic and the main section of the tailgate. The razor rear lamps are connected by a slim horizontal design, giving the all-new Sportage a wide impression from the back. Completing the design journey, a large lower graphic bumper casing at the rear uses the same philosophy as the frontal technical black grille, connecting the all-new Sportage’s rear design elements and resulting in lightness in both appearance and touch. The interior of the all-new Sportage plays with boldness in character, offering intuitive and innovative technology, to create a driver-orientated space. A sculpted integrated curved display with a slim crush touchscreen pad and finely detailed air vents forms the nucleus of the all-new Sportage’s cabin. The curved display sweeps across the front of the Sportage, giving the cockpit great width and depth. Optimally positioned for the driver and front passenger is an ergonomic centre console that combines convenience with luxury. Finished with a high-end gloss, the console provides storage, operating system configuration, cupholders and softtouch switches, the latter sitting on a raised profile alongside the shift-by-wire transmission dial. Further enhancing passenger convenience, at the rear of the driver and front passenger seats are integrated hangertype designs within the slim headrests, allowing clothing and handbags to be easily and conveniently hooked into place. For the first time in the Sportage’s history, a bolder model has been specifically designed to convey a more confident, vigorous and versatile character. The all-new Sportage X-Line features a unique bumper, side sill and curved roof rack. On the inside, customers can choose between a signature sage green or black seating, as well as bold quilting and black metal wood to further bring to life the model’s confident persona. Due for global market launch later this year, more information on the all-new Sportage will be made available in due course. Source: autotalk.com.au

BATHURST WILDCARD ENTRY FOR MURPHY AND STANAWAY It has been confirmed that Erebus Motorsport and Boost Mobile will field a wildcard at this year’s Bathurst 1000 which will see four-time Bathurst 1000 winner Greg Murphy and compatriot Richie Stanaway come out of retirement. Murphy’s sensational comeback comes seven years after retiring from racing and marks his 23rd Bathurst 1000 start, scoring wins in 1996, 1999, 2003 and 2004, although his most famous Bathurst moment was his Lap of the Gods qualifying effort in ‘03. It will be a fifth start for Stanaway after hanging up his helmet two years ago. “All of a sudden here’s a group of people who are wanting and willing to make this happen,” Murphy said. “I’m very fortunate and lucky to be presented with the opportunity to go back and race at a place that means so much to me.” Murphy and Stanaway will run Murphy’s iconic #51, a number

he carried full time from 2001 – 2012. Murphy and Boost Mobile owner Peter Adderton’s long-standing relationship stems back to 1994 in both the Australian Manufacturer’s and Australian Drivers Championships, before he became Boost Mobile’s earliest motorsport ambassador. Stanaway also raced under the Boost Mobile banner during stints at Tickford Racing in 2018, and Garry Rogers Motorsport in 2019. The global telecommunications brand also supported Stanaway during his 2017 endurance campaign, where he drove to victory at the Sandown 500 with Cameron Waters. The announcement comes after months of campaigning from fans after Adderton floated the idea on social media back in April. The team are set to roll out their livery for the Great Race later next month, with this year’s Bathurst 1000 set to take place on October 7 – 10

TRANSPORT BUDGET DRIVES QUEENSLAND’S ECONOMIC RECOVERY The Queensland government has released details of its $27.5 billion, four-year roads and transport investment plan to support 24,000 jobs.

“That includes our $25 million commitment to the $125 million Gladstone Port Access Road project, which will improve access to the port and take trucks off local roads.

“We expect more Queenslanders to make the switch to electric vehicles in the coming years, so we’ll keep building more charging stations,” transport and main roads minister Mark Bailey says

“We’re also backing upgrades to key regional highways, with $47.5 million in this budget to support a $237.5 million jointly-funded plan to upgrade sections of the Landsborough and Capricorn Highways and surrounding roads, as part of the Mount Isa to Rockhampton corridor upgrade.

Opened in 2018, the Queensland Electric Vehicle Superhighway now has 31 charging sites between Coolangatta and Port Douglas.

“This budget provides funding to add 18 new sites, taking the network out west to places like Winton, Roma, Emerald and Cloncurry to support regional tourism,” Bailey explains. He says the Palaszczuk Government is also progressing initiatives to support its commitment that all new urban buses rolled out in Queensland from 2025 will be zero-emissions vehicles. “Electric buses are already being trialled on some routes and we’ll start to see more built at BusTech on the Gold Coast, including two bio-ethanol fuelled buses that will start trials in Mackay later this year.” “The Bruce Highway benefits from $883 million in additional joint funding to support our plan to target upgrades between Gladstone and Rockhampton, north of Townsville and build four lanes at Tiaro. “The new funding locks in $13 billion in joint funding to continue upgrading priority sections of the 1700km highway over the coming decade.” Bailey says funding has been provided to move freight more efficiently across the state by improving key road and port connections.

24

“Those works will complement the $500 million in joint funding already locked in for upgrades to the Inland Freight Route between Charters Towers and Mungindi on the NSW border.” Bailey says the Inland Freight Route will take trucks off the Bruce Highway, create regional jobs and improve freight productivity for truck drivers, farmers and mine workers. “On the Sunshine Coast, we’ll work with the Federal Government on a $320 million upgrade of the Mooloolah River Interchange,” he says, explaining it will add to more than $3.5 billion in road and rail investments being delivered between Brisbane’s northside and Gympie. “The $163 million Deception Bay interchange upgrade is taking shape, and we’re moving ahead with a $2.1 billion plan to ensure the road network copes with population growth in Brisbane and the Moreton Bay regions with new arterial roads like the Moreton Connector. Bailey says the Queensland government is continuing talks with industry to build trains in Maryborough and develop rail supply hubs in places like Rockhampton. “Train stations across south-east Queensland will become more accessible under our $500 million station upgrade program.” A financial support package introduced in April 2020 to assist transport operators struggling with a downturn in passengers will be extended until the end of 2021, with an additional $16.3 million.

MCLAREN RACING TO ENTER EXTREME E IN 2022 McLaren Racing will open a new motorsport chapter in 2022 when it enters a team into Extreme E, the innovative allelectric off-road series which aims to use racing to promote sustainability and diversity. The team will compete in the five-race global championship, helping to accelerate McLaren Racing’s own sustainability and diversity agenda, while reaching new fans and partners, and growing the McLaren Racing brand and franchise. “From the moment Extreme E was announced we have been following the progress of the series closely,” Zak Brown, CEO, McLaren Racing, commented. “Our attention was immediately drawn by the innovative format of this motorsport platform, in particular the ability it gives us to accelerate and boost our own overarching sustainability agenda, which shares the same priorities of decarbonisation, waste reduction, diversity and equality. The decision to enter Extreme E follows a detailed evaluation of the series by McLaren against a set of strategic, economic and operational criteria. These were underpinned by a clear imperative for accelerating McLaren Racing’s own sustainability

mission, which places carbon reduction, the recycling, reuse and elimination of waste, and diversity, equality and inclusion at its core. Extreme E highlights the impact of climate change in some of the world’s most remote environments, promotes the adoption of electric vehicles to pave the way for a lower carbon future, and provides a world-first gender-equal motorsport platform. HILUX LEADS STRONG MAY SALES RECOVERY The Toyota Hilux led a strong Aussie market recovery in May 2021 with 4402 units sold, followed by the Ford Ranger which saw 4254 units sold and the Toyota RAV-4 saw 4014 units sold in spite of restricted supply of the hybrid models. Toyota was the Australian new car market leader in May recording sales of 21,156 units. It was followed by Mazda (10,554), Kia (7124), Ford (6493) and Mitsubishi (6478). The demand for new vehicles for business and private use remains strong with a 2021 record number of 100,809 new vehicle sales being recorded in May according to the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI). The result this month surpasses the March result of 100,005 and has the industry on track to return to sales of more than one million new vehicles for the year. It shows an increase of 68.3 per cent on the corresponding month last year which was significantly impacted through COVID-19 lockdowns across the country. FCAI chief executive Tony Weber says the result once again showed that confidence in the national economy and pentup demand across all sectors were strong enough to counter issues related to COVID-19 uncertainties and supply chain issues.

“While we cannot be certain about the future economic impacts of the COVID-19 situation, businesses and households are showing their confidence by purchasing new vehicles,” he says. “I expect this situation will continue to improve in the second half of this calendar year as confidence continues to grow, coupled with incentives such as the extension of the depreciation allowance for business which was announced in the Federal Budget during the month. Weber says that the rental segment continued to grow with the year to date result up 69.4% while private sales were up 50.3% year to date. “The result also highlights the outstanding efforts by all parties in the supply chain in continuing to meet the demands of their of their customers in the face of ongoing challenges such as the shortage of microprocessors and shipping delays,” Weber says.

ALL-NEW KLUGER LANDING IN TOYOTA DEALERSHIPS

Toyota’s all-new Kluger large SUV has arrived in Australia sporting a stylish sculpted look, significantly improved safety features, and for the first time here, a hybrid powertrain. Toyota Australia sales, marketing and franchise operations vice-president Sean Hanley says the addition of hybrid to Kluger further demonstrated Toyota’s commitment to delivering on electrified options in its line-up.

“Kluger is now the eighth Toyota model in Australia that offers a fuel-efficient hybrid drivetrain and as our sales success proves, it is still currently the leading option for sustainable transport,” Hanley says. The all-new model is available in three trim levels – GX, GXL and Grande – in petrol 2WD guise or hybrid or petrol AWD configuration. The new hybrid system combines a 2.5-litre four-cylinder Atkinson cycle petrol engine with three electric motors that generate a maximum combined output of 184kW that drives through an electric e-Four AWD system. At the same time, it delivers a combined cycle fuel consumption of 5.6l/100km with combined CO2 emissions of 128g/km. Driving through an electronic continuously variable transmission (e-CVT), the e-Four AWD system allows up to 100% of drive to be sent through the front wheels or up to 80% through the rear, depending on conditions, with a Trail mode for more challenging off-road environments. The 218kW/350Nm V6 petrol engine maintains the same

maximum outputs as its predecessor but further refinement has improved fuel economy by between 4 and 7 per cent. That same level of refinement is echoed in the cabin with soft touch materials, clever design and its increased space and versatility comfortably accommodating seven occupants. The new Kluger features the latest in Toyota Safety Sense driver assistance features including pre collision safety system with pedestrian and daytime cyclist detection, emergency steering assist and intersection turn assist on every model. Added to this are active cruise control – with curve speed reduction function – lane trace assist, blind spot monitor, reversing camera and seven airbags, creating a very comprehensive safety package. Standard equipment includes smart entry and start, manual front and rear dual-zone air conditioning, rain sensing wipers and automatic lights, and five USB ports. The GXL models gain power heated front seats, tri-zone climate control, synthetic leather upholstery, power tailgate and satellite navigation for the latest generation multimedia system. The top-of-the-range Kluger Grande adds a panoramic moonroof, hands-free opening for the power tailgate, ventilation for the front seats, head-up display, a panoramic view monitor, leather-accented seats and a premium 11-speaker JBL audio system. The Kluger is covered by Toyota Warranty Advantage, which offers 5 year unlimited kilometre coverage extending to sevenyears on engine and driveline, with capped-price servicing for the first five years/75,000km and each 12-month/15,000km service costing $250.
