Kenya is known for being absolutely breathtaking. In the great lakes region of East Africa, the savannah grasslands are full of life. Choose to head off for one week or more on a safari that will show you what makes this region special.

Botswana

Botswana is another area that is fit for a safari. The subtropical wilderness is home to a whole host of fascinating creatures, such as crocodiles, hippos, warthogs, mongooses and monkeys. The landscape is utterly stunning, with dry and extreme deserts right near pristine and thriving oases.

Kruger National Park

With nearly two million hectares of reserve it’s no wonder Kruger National Park and its surrounding private game reserves can boast not only all of the Big Five but the Little Five (which includes shrews and tortoise). Those lists only scratch the surface however, as Kruger has some of the highest concentrations of the wildlife in Africa.

A typical day on an African Safari: 05h00 – Wake up! Wake up! It’s an early start

The sun’s coming up and the animals are on the move... don’t forget to pack your hat and mittens. You might be on safari but we can promise you it’s chilly at 5am in Africa.

05h30 – The best game viewing is in the morning

Meet your ranger and jump on a 4X4 safari vehicle. Fear not, your fleeting morning lethargy will soon be replaced with a mix of anticipation and enticement - the best game viewing is first thing in the morning.

06h00 – Cameras at the ready

Eyes wide and fingers wavering over your shutter button, you’ll spend the next few hours bounding over the grassy sun-drenched terrain in hot pursuit of anything that moves on legs, hooves or slithering scales.

09h30 – Breakfast time

With the sun now well and truly pelting down on the terrain, safari vehicles start returning from game drives. Guests are greeted with a hearty, well-deserved breakfast.

11h00 – Relax and keep cool

You’re now heading into the hottest part of the day, so it’s time to enjoy the amenities offered by your lodge. There may be some cultural activities, or an inviting pool awaiting your arrival.

16h30 – Safari time!

Darkness falls and the predators and prey begin to stir from a day of easy slumber. With a majestic African sunset as your backdrop, animals become more active and nocturnal animals get ready for the night’s hunt. Your tracker is up front looking out for tell-tale tracks and animals.

18h00 – A party for night animals

As the sun finally sets, your ranger will pick a good spot for a sundowner where you will watch the sunset, accompanied by some cocktails and refreshments. A real safari tradition! Now that darkness encapsulates the savannah, your tracker and guide use a powerful spotlight to catch sight of any roaming animals. With a lot of skill and a little good fortune, you might just bear witness to animals like the elusive African leopard and lions.

20h00 – Dinner and a nightcap

At most lodges there are a number of places to enjoy dinner. Your ranger usually joins for a celebratory dinner. Be warned, the camp fire stories have been known to continue into the early hours.

VIETNAM 8. Sidecar motorbike riding

Quite simply, Vietnam is one of the most divine Asian destinations on the planet. Breathtakingly beautiful, Vietnam is a country on the move. Fast, energetic and resilient by nature, it is rapidly emerging as one of the latest hotspots of Asia.

One of the most fun ways to get around Saigon is in the side car of an ex. Vietnam army motorbike! Settle into the sidecar and sit at ground level on these busy bustling streets! It’s breathtaking and amazing fun!

9. Lantern making and silk painting

Our top 10 activities in Vietnam:

Take a traditional lantern making or silk painting lesson in Hoi An’s Old Town. The experienced teachers will instruct you in the traditional techniques, helping you craft your masterpiece.

KOTO stands for ‘Know One Teach One’ and is a not-for-profit organisation in Hanoi. Their mission is to help train disadvantaged young people in authentic Vietnamese culinary arts.

After all the excitement and fun of travelling around Vietnam, it’s easy to forget that this is a land very much focused on its religious heritage. There are some glorious temples where you can visit, pray, meditate and get back to centre.

3. Shoot an AK47 or M16 rifle at the gun range at the Cu Chi Tunnels

This activity is growing in popularity all around the world and here you’ll get a hands-on experience.

4. Take the world’s longest cable car ride

Head to the top of Bana Mountain, Danang (5,042 metres long) and make sure you take your camera to capture the amazing views.

5. Enjoy some of the cheapest beer in the world

Vietnam is scattered with tiny, local bars set on street corners which is the best way to enjoy a drink. These little bars serve Bia Hoi (draft beer) for approx. 40c a glass (NZD)…now that is a saving!

6. People watching

This sounds tame but really, in this part of the world it is a fascinating pastime, particularly in Hanoi’s Old Quarter. Better yet, it’s free and probably one of the best ways to relax and be a part of Vietnam.

7. Cool off at the Dam Sen Waterpark (Saigon)

Saigon’s Dam Sen Waterpark is home to pools, huge slides and rides for the young and old. We recommend visiting on weekdays as it can be very busy with locals on weekends!
