A MESSAGE FROM THE EDITOR It might be tempting to buy a set of cheap imitation wheels but don’t be conned - it’s not worth it,” advises Australian Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries chief Tony Weber in this month’s eye-opening feature story. A ‘Genuine Is Best’ spokesperson, Weber teamed up with Mercedes-Benz Australia Pacific and GM Holden to demonstrate the serious safety risks posed by some aftermarket parts. The results are extraordinary, with the aftermarket wheels causing real danger at only 50km/h. That story on page 24. Elsewhere in this month’s special “bumper edition” we have prepared five pages of thrilling motorsport reads, the latest industry news and interviews, and a round-up of some great rewards ideal for your summer holidays.
Genuine Article - December 2015 Design and layout: Keryn Paterson Contributing writers: Benjamin Telfer, Benjamin Carrell Thanks to: Kelly Burns, Lennie Williams, Quinton Scheurich

Blewett serves notice of TR86 intentions
Auckland driver Ash Blewett has laid down the gauntlet for this year’s Toyota Finance 86
Championship with three wins from three starts. Blewett dominated the opening ITM 500 V8
Supercar round of the competition; part of the support categories at Pukekohe Park Raceway. Blewett won November 14’s eight lap race from pole, surging forward to win the second partial reverse grid race on Day 2. Capping off a successful weekend for the young driver, Blewett achieved a comfortable win in final race of the weekend from pole.
Callum Quinn finished runner-up in all three races. This is Blewett’s third championship, and it is the third time he has won in the opening Pukekohe round.
Piquet returns for Toyota Racing Series
Pedro Piquet, the youngest son of three-time Formula One World Champion Nelson Piquet is returning to New Zealand next January for the five-round Toyota Racing Series. Piquet briefly raced in the 2014 series, but withdrew due to an issue with his racing licence that wasn’t identified prior to entering.
Now 17 years old, Piquet has won the Brazilian Formula Three Championship for two years
running and will use the TRS Series as a springboard into the highly competitive FIA European
Formula Three Championship in 2016. The Series starts at Ruapuna Speedway in Christchurch on January 16th.
Piquet has dominated Formula Three in Brazil for the last two years, winning a whopping 12 of the 14 races held this year and 11 of the 16 events in 2014. The young driver has
also competed in selected Porsche GT3 Cup events in Brazil and Europe this year to gain experience of circuits he will compete on in the future.
Piquet will drive for the Hamilton-based M2 Competition team, who oversaw his appearance in 2014. M2 are the current TRS Championship winning team, with Canadian driver Lance Stroll claiming the title earlier this year.

Action-packed race day at Pukekohe
It was a brilliant sunny day at Pukekohe raceway and fans were treated to a 22-car grid at round two of the BNT NZ Touring Cars championship, serving as the main support class to the V8 Supercars ITM500.
Simon Evans, in his Smeg Racing Holden, claimed two wins from three starts to secure the overall round win. Evans was joined on the podium by Mitchell Cunningham and Tim Edgell, driving a Ford and a Holden respectively.
Other results in the action-packed day included Craig Baird’s victory in the final reverse grid race of the weekend in his Team Kiwi Racing Holden. Local driver Kevin Williams dominated the class two of the championship in his Strapping
Systems Holden, securing three race wins from pole position and the fastest lap. Williams was joined on the podium by Brad Lathrope and Liam MacDonald.

Fans Flock to V8 Supercars at Pukekohe
A total crowd of 116,554 people attended this year’s ITM 500 Auckland at Pukekohe Park Raceway. Attendance was up for each day of the three-day event with 33,451 fans attending on Friday, 42,978 on Saturday and 40,125 on Sunday. We spoke to V8 Supercars Chief Executive James Warburton about the sports growing popularity. “We are delighted with the increases in this year’s attendance across each day of the event. It’s
another endorsement of V8 Supercars and the great entertainment it offers fans on and off the track. “I want to thank Auckland Tourism, Events and
Economic Development (ATEED) and all our
partners, in particular ITM, for their support of
this event. Our teams and drivers love coming to Pukekohe and racing at this historic circuit.
“I also want to thank the people of New Zealand who are among the most knowledgeable and passionate motor sport fans in the world.
“They’ve enjoyed great entertainment on and off the track including the True Colour Track Walk where thousands of fans were able to get up
close and personal with the drivers and their cars on the grid.”

Urban claims first Rotax Grand Finals win for NZ
Emma Gilmour wins worldwide desert racing opportunity
Kiwi karter Ryan Urban is on top of the world having claimed New Zealand’s first class win at a Rotax Max Challenge Grand Finals meeting in Portugal. The win came in the DD2 Masters class at the 16th annual Grand Finals meeting at Portimao on the Algarve.
Dunedin rally driver Emma Gilmour has won a fullyfunded drive in the 2016 Sealine Cross Country Rally. Along with co-driver Lisette Bakker from the Netherlands, Gilmour was selected to participate in the joint ‘FIA Women in Motorsport’ and ‘Qatar Motor and

Young McElrea takes lead in SIFF Australian-based Kiwi racer Hunter McElrea has taken the outright lead in the South Island Formula Ford Championship (SIFF) after a successful second round in Timaru, gaining maximum points from three races. McElrea, driving an older Class 2 1991 Van Diemen has a current lead of 14 points over Southland’s Ethan Anderson, with the Australian-based Mitchell Maddren in third. The event also doubled as the opening round of the New Zealand Formula Ford Championship with Wanganui driver Aaron Marr taking the lead from Te Puke’s Michael Scott. Of the 22 drivers who started it was Marr who stamped his authority on the meeting, qualifying fastest from Scott, McElrea and Levin’s James Webb. In the first race Marr boosted ahead of the field after Scott developed an engine issue.

While Marr led at the start of race two, it was Scott, driving last season’s championship winning Mygale car who took
the lead early and held it until the chequered flag. The third
race was almost a repeat, with Marr happy to finish second and take the points.
Marr, Scott and Webb will not return for further South Island Series legs, choosing to focus solely on the national title.

B Select Tyre & Auto Centre
Peter Searle speaks to B Select Hamilton Director Jessica Cobb about the key to her businesses’ success, genuine parts and … outdoor furniture?! How long have you been in business? We have been in the tyre/mechanical industry for 18 years. How many business locations do you have? Two, one on Anglesea Street and another in Te Rapa. What services do you offer? We try and make both locations one-stop shops with all tyre necessities, mechanical necessities, WOFs and servicing. Tell me about your furniture side-business, what am I sitting on? That is a chair made from 100% recycles tyres. We are the Hamilton stockists of “retyred” furniture. It’s a nice compliment to the business. It must be quite durable outside? [Laughs] It will probably outlive all of us, and it’s so comfy! People sit in them and don’t realise what they are made of until we tell them - they are usually very surprised! It is all up-market and expertly made. How many staff do you have in the business? 12 staff across both branches. What makes your service second-to-none? I think it’s the experience of our staff; some of our staff have been with us for over 25 years. There is loyalty there on both sides, between staff and the customers. They give their love of the job back to the customer. How influential are points to your purchasing decisions? It was one of the things that made us sign-up with the Tyreline network, Tyreplus. It was definitely a draw to get points. We’ve used them to set up a staff bonus system for extra sales, they were all into it guns blazing [laughs]. What is your dream car? A Holden HSV, another one [laughs]. Why do you use genuine parts? It’s just much easier to source genuine parts, with after-market we have to go through 2 or 3 people.

i-ELOOP’s Electricity Double Layer Capacitor
MAZDA TORQUE Each EDLC module contains 50 coconuts! i-ELOOP’s EDLC (Electricity DoubleLayer Capacitor) is capable of storing a large amount of electrical energy because its electrodes use activated carbon manufactured from coconut shell. Because each grain of this activated carbon contains a myriad of nanopores that measure only 1/40,000 the thickness of a human hair in diameter, the total surface area of the electrodes containing the activated carbon is comparable to that of several dozen soccer fields. Coconut is a highly versatile natural material that is not only refined to make coconut oil, but is also processed for use in sponges, soap and other products. With a shell that is harder than wood or bamboo, coconut makes a fine raw material for producing activated carbon. Producing activated carbon from coconut husks is also attracting attention as an effective solution for putting to use the leftover husks from coconuts harvested for coconut oil production. The electrodes in each i-ELOOP EDLC module contain approximately 50 coconuts, and there is still much room left for expanding production volume. Another benefit of the EDLC is that it does not use any rare metals, which are a source of pollution. Made from simple carbon, they are eco-friendly devices that are gentle on the environment when discarded.

Rebranding a business can be a tricky thing, but Auckland Vehicles customers need not bat an eyelid. The dealership formerly known as Winger Hyundai, Kia and Isuzu promise the same great service they have always provided their customers. We spoke to owner Grant Vincent about rebranding, the company’s longevity and secret to their success.
Why genuine parts? Because genuine parts have been designed and
engineered to the precise original factory tolerances, they are guaranteed to fit and perform.
