Stellar year for Kiwi stars Hartley and Bamber 4
Kiwi racing stars Brendon Hartley and Earl Bamber, with Porsche team-mate Timo Bernhard, secured the 2017 FIA World Endurance Drivers’ and Manufacturers’ Championship at the penultimate round in Shanghai. The result adds to a stellar year for Hartley and Bamber, from Palmerston North and Wanganui respectively, particularly with Hartley’s recent successful Formula 1 debut with Scuderia Toro Rosso and confirmation that he’s racing for the F1 team for the remainder of the 2017 season. It is Hartley’s second WEC drivers’ title, the first coming in 2015 with Bernhard and Australian Mark Webber, and Bamber’s first. The friends who raced karts together as children swapped the stats around when they partnered with Bernhard to win the iconic Le Mans
Storey/Hackett claim championship win at
HIGHLANDS 501 Kiwi driver Dominic Storey and Peter Hackett have clinched the Australian Endurance Championship in an action-packed Highlands 501. Max Twigg and Tony D’Alberto claimed an unlikely win in the feature race with Highlands owner Tony Quinn and Andrew Waite, the resident professional at the Cromwell circuit in second. Much of the drama however, revolved around the championship battle between Hackett and Storey and Tim Miles and Jaxon Evans, who’ve led the title race all season. It was a heartbreaking race for Miles and Evans, the young Australian-based Kiwi who’s tipped for big things. They only needed to finish fourth to wrap up the championship but with Evans lying second behind Storey, he made the mistake of pushing too hard for the win and lost control on turn two, ripping the tyre from the right rear wheel. Evans’ mistake appeared to gift the title to Storey and Hackett but there was more drama to come. With five laps to go, Hackett and Storey appeared to be cruising to the race win and the championship, but a problem with the suspension saw Storey crawl into pit lane for some frantic repairs before re-joining for the eventual win. “At that point, I thought I was going to have an easy run home to the race win and the championship,” says Storey. “The car was feeling good until about eight laps from the finish. I initially thought it was a problem with the tyres but then I had issues with the steering.” “Before Jaxon crashed out I thought we were going to win the race but lose the championship and then after Dom came into the pits I realised we were going to lose the race, but thankfully he hung on to win the championship. I’m really proud,” commented Hackett. Source: nzmotorracing.co.nz
24 Hours earlier this year – that was Bamber’s second Le Mans victory and Hartley’s first. Chris van der Drift secured the 2017 Porsche Carrera Cup Asia Championship title at the same event where he battled Earl Bamber’s younger brother Will, among a talented field to win the championship. know before you go! Five simple rules to help you stay safe.
Before you go boating on our seas, lakes and rivers, get familiar with New Zealand’s Boating Safety Code. Five simple rules will help you to stay safe, no matter what kind of boat you use. Visit rewards-shop.co.nz to get your water safety gear.
1. Life Jackets
Take them - wear them. Boats, especially ones under six-metres in length, can sink very quickly. Wearing a life jacket increases your survival time in the water.
2. Skipper Responsibility
The skipper is responsible for the safety of everyone on board and for the safe operation of the boat. Stay within the limits of your vessel and your experience. Make sure your boat is properly and regularly maintained, has the right safety gear on board and if it has a motor, that it has sufficient fuel.
3. Communications
Take two separate waterproof ways of communicating so the Coastguard can help you if you get into difficulties.
Basic Boating Safety Pack 183,400 pts
You should not expect good mobile phone coverage in remote areas. For emergency communications, a marine VHF radio is recommended. Use channel 16 for emergencies.
4. Marine Weather
New Zealand’s weather can be highly unpredictable. Check the local marine weather forecast before you go and expect both weather and sea state changes.
5. Avoid Alcohol
You need to stay alert and aware. Safe boating and alcohol do not mix as things can change quickly on the water. Adapted from - https://www.coastguard.nz/boating-safely/boating-safety-code/

Scholarship recipient loving learning a trade “Right from a young age I’ve had an interest in how cars are built and their structural frames,” says 18-year-old apprentice collision repair technician, Leon Jordan. “After I left school, I knew I wanted to explore that interest further. So, when I saw a role advertised for a car groomer at Auckland Panel & Paint, with the opportunity to work my way up and learn more about the collision repair industry, I jumped at the chance!”

East-West link alternative ‘urgent’ Draft approval for a proposed $1.85 billion Auckland motorway project sends a signal the work “should proceed”, transport industry leaders say. The East-West Link construction has been given the green light by a government appointed board of inquiry for the Environmental Protection Authority. The decision gives the NZ Transport Agency legal approval to build a four-lane arterial road connecting State Highway 20 at the Neilson Street Interchange in Onehunga with State Highway 1 in Mt Wellington. However, the project doesn’t have the backing of Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern or Auckland mayor Phil Goff despite admitting solutions are needed for the area’s congestion problems. National Road Carriers Association chief executive David Aiken says the “decision shows the new road is justified. Now it needs to be followed up quickly with a constructive alternative solution for the area’s increasing traffic congestion,” he says.
Road Transport Forum chief executive Ken Shirley agrees and says finding a solution is “urgent”. “While the road transport industry is disappointed at the Government’s position we are keen to actively engage to find an enduring solution that will provide the benefits that the approved project would have delivered.

Autonomous crash in first two hours Two hours into its first public outing in Las Vegas, an autonomous vehicle was involved in a traffic accident.
The much-publicised Navya Arma autonomous shuttle bus was in a crash with a truck, caused by a human, The Guardian reports. The minor accident happened when a reversing truck was detected by the shuttle which stopped in response. The truck continued to reverse illegally and impacted with the front of the eight-seater shuttle which had passengers aboard. “The shuttle just stayed still. And we were like, it’s going to hit us, it’s going to hit us – and then it hit us,” passenger Jenny Wong told news station KSNV, “The shuttle didn’t have the ability to move back. The shuttle just stayed still.” Private French Company Keolis which owns Navya, replied to local news KSNV saying, “It’s designed to stop and yield
to the moving object. But, if the moving object keeps coming toward the shuttle it can back up, but apparently in this case the truck just kept on going, and went right in to the side of the shuttle.” The free shuttle service, the first of its kind in the US, will continue for its full year-long trial. Inkster and Winn hang tough for
TARGA NZ VICTORY #4 In claiming their fourth event win in as many years, this year’s Targa New Zealand winners Glenn Inkster and co-driver Spencer Winn (Mitsubishi Evo 8), have matched the consecutive event record of previous event ‘King’ Tony Quinn and his co-driver Naomi Tillett. The pair, Inkster from Patumahoe near Pukekohe, and Winn from Howick in south-east Auckland, did it in some style this year too, winning the Lion’s share of the 28 closed special stages and successfully managing a turbo manifold issue,

Nick Cassidy wins
MOTORSPORT NEWS
JAPAN’S SUPER GT TITLE Aucklander Nick Cassidy has won Japan’s premier motor racing championship, the Autobacs SUPER GT series, after finishing second in the final round at Twin Rings Motegi in his Lexus LC500. Cassidy and his co-driver Ryo Hirakawa finished just over six seconds behind the 2014 and 2015 champions Tsugio Matsuda and Ronnie Quintarelli in the 53 lap, 250 kms race. Cassidy and Hirakawa were fastest during the practice and then qualified third for the race. They went into the weekend with a six point lead over fellow Lexus drivers Kazuya Oshima and Andrea Caldarelli, who slipped back to third in the series. Twenty-three-year-old Cassidy and Hirakawa won the opening round of the championship in April and also the penultimate race in Thailand last month. Cassidy joins a small select group of foreign drivers to take the title, Japan’s equivalent of V8 Supercars, which includes triple Le Mans 24 Hours race winner Andre Lotterer.

Fresh from his biggest year of motor racing yet, Marcus Armstrong (17) has confirmed he will contest the 2018 Castrol Toyota Racing Series with one aim: to be champion. The Christchurch-born racer, currently in the midst of winter testing for his 2018 European campaign, won three races in the 2017 TRS including the Denny Hulme Memorial Trophy. Heading almost immediately to Europe, he then embarked on two separate FIA Formula 4 campaigns.

EV space in new $31.3m Christchurch parking building Ten electric vehicle charging bays are just a start in a $31.3 million, 805 space parking building opened in central Christchurch. The Christchurch City Council owned eight-storey building is wired so almost all the parks can be converted to electric charging spaces if needed, Stuff reports. A fleet of 30 Yoogo shared-use

EVs are also likely to be based there.
An hour’s free parking will be available over summer at the Lichfield Street facility, built by Clearwater Construction. The building has its own power substation and 953 square metres of retail space. The opening is a “massive milestone” for a city that had been struggling with gravel pits for parks and relying on on-street spaces”, council
transport operations manager Aaron Haymes says. Space and lockers are also provided for 96 bikes, while 24 disability access parks are offered. It’s the third largest parking building to open in the retail precinct, following the 400-park Crossing and 580-park Hereford Street buildings. Source: autotalk.co.nz

Chris van der Drift won the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia 2017 after the final two rounds at the Shanghai International Circuit in China. Heading into the weekend, van der Drift was second on the overall points table and set the fastest lap in qualifying with a 2:08.025 lap. He was just one-tenth of a second quicker than fellow Kiwi driver Will Bamber (brother of Le Mans 24 Hour winner Earl), who wrangled P2 with a 2:08.127 lap time, while Porsche China Junior Team’s Andrew Tang began in third with a 2:08.135 lap time. Michels takes the lead in both NZ and SI F1600 Championships Southland’s Jordan Michels has taken the lead of the New Zealand F1600 Championship after the opening round in Timaru. Also doubling as the second round of the South Island F1600 Championship, Michels has extended his lead in the series continuing his winning form from the opening round in Christchurch. Fastest throughout the weekend and making his F1600 race debut was Auckland’s Callum Hedge (Mygale). Having topped the time sheets in the Friday practice and in the Saturday morning’s qualifying, the 13 year old went on to comfortably win the first two of three races. However, a slipping clutch in the final 12-lap race saw Hedge retire, the round win slipping out of his grasp. Second quickest over the weekend was Joshua Bethune
“It was a fantastic turn of luck,” commented Michels.
(Mygale). Having twice finished runner up to Hedge, he took

rob him of the win. He dropped down the order, but still finished in 13th and holds onto fifth, in the South Island and third in the national championship. Michels has arguably had his share of bad luck and this round, his and the team’s experience shone through. His win in the third race secured the round win after finishing third in the two-preceding races.
“In saying that, we mustn’t get into a false sense of security, but continue to work as this is a championship where you must finish races.” Drivers and teams will head to Invercargill for the next South Island round in December, before the next two national rounds in January, also in the South Island.
