MEMBER PROFILE

TONY FABISH PANELWORKS Tony Fabish Panelworks is a family owned and operated workshop in Te Awamutu. With a staff of 16 and offering a full range of panel and paint services, Tony Fabish Panelworks on Bond Road in Te Awamutu is a busy place. We spoke with owner Adam Devoy.

Tell us a bit about yourself and how you came about owning Tony Fabish Panelworks I started my journey with Tony Fabish Panelworks via a work experience placement while I was completing my pre-trade at the Waikato Polytechnic. The previous owner, Tony Fabish, offered me a job, then an apprenticeship, which I completed via MITO to become qualified as a tradesman and then stepping up to become the workshop foreman. Tony had talked to me about buying into the business, but the big wide world was calling, so my wife Kelly and I set off on our OE to the UK. While overseas I tried different jobs outside of the trade but eventually ended up back in a panel beating role with Renault London City. Renault was amazing. I learned a lot of new skills, which I brought back to the business when Tony called saying “come back now or miss out.” Returning to Te Awamutu, I began buying into the business slowly, until buying Tony out in full 2 years ago.

Genuine parts are cleaner, tidier and easier to work with.

Why Genuine parts? That’s pretty easy - because you want the vehicles you repair to be back to factory standard and using genuine parts does that. They’re cleaner, tidier and easier to work with. The GetGenuine points are a great bonus, especially if something needs replacing around the house.

6

What is your secret to success? Running a successful operation comes with a set of challenges, the biggest challenge for me at the moment is the labour shortage. However, I have a pretty simple recruitment and retention strategy which works. Predominantly bringing on board new talent via contacts at the local college, new recruits are given a chance to earn an apprenticeship spot. I’ve always been a big advocate of keeping jobs in the community, and persevering with training people. I’ve got guys out there who grew up together, they know each other and socialise together – they want to be around each other. Maintaining a positive culture within the team is paramount… if they’re happy, they’re productive.

What has been your worst experience with aftermarket? There are too many to list! During my apprenticeship back when genuine parts were expensive, we’d spend hours lining things up, trying to make it fit and work. It was very frustrating.

At the end of the day though, the secret to success is pretty simple…there’s no secret to success, it comes down to hard work, dedication and patience. Adam has used his points for lots of rewards over the last couple of years, from lawnmowers to iPads, outdoor furniture to scooters and toys for the kids! Thanks for featuring in edition 49 of the Genuine Article Adam, and thanks for ordering genuine parts!

Hard luck for Bamber and #911 Porsche at NURBURGRING Bad luck hit the #911 Porsche 911 GT3 R car of Kévin Estre (F), Romain Dumas (F), Laurens Vanthoor (B) and Earl Bamber (NZ) at the Nürburgring 24-hour race in May. The second of three Manthey-run Porsche 911 GT3 R racers led the field as the pole-setter right from the start of the Eifel classic. During the night the car hit oil, slid from the track and crashed into the barriers, putting an end to the strong, dominant charge. The #912 sister car won the race in pouring rain, the nine-eleven fielded by the Manthey-Racing team took the lead 70 minutes before the end of the race and held onto it to the flag. Having started the race on the Saturday at 15:30 hours in bright sunshine from sixth on the grid, the Porsche fell far behind with a puncture.

8

During the night, the driver line-up of Richard Lietz (A), Patrick Pilet (F), Frédéric Makowiecki (F) and Nick Tandy (GB) caught up to the frontrunners and moved into second place despite a time penalty. When the race was restarted on the Sunday, after fog halted the race at 13:45 hours, the final driver Frédéric Makowiecki snatched the lead with a masterful overtaking manoeuvre and crossed the finish line in first place after 135 laps. This marks Porsche’s first victory since 2011 on the legendary long-distance racetrack and hands the brand its twelfth victory. Source: nzmotorracing.co.nz

Leitch and Orr team-up FOR ENDUROS’ Two familiar names in New Zealand motor racing are set to join forces with the country’s newest sports car racing outfit ITM MIKE Racing. 22-year-old Brendon Leitch and 30-year-old Christina Orr-West will race an ITM-backed Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 in this year’s North and South Island Endurance Series. Started by Mike Chua in 2008, the racing team moved from Malaysia to New Zealand last year. MIKE Racing began competing in the two respective endurance series’ with Orr-West alongside up-and-coming BNT V8s competitor Chelsea Herbert in an Aston Martin Vantage GT4. Now Chua and the team are set to step up their campaign with a full season in the SLS. Leitch and Orr-West come from somewhat similar racing backgrounds. The pair have both raced

in the Castrol Toyota Racing Series and made ventures to the United States to chase their IndyCar Series dream. With a few more years of racing experience under her belt, Orr-West has most recently raced in the BNT V8s, Bathurst 12 Hour and the SsangYong Racing Series. Leitch comes to the team with plenty of recent racing experience. Last year he raced in the United States Formula 4 Championship and this year contested his fifth season of the Toyota Racing Series. Leitch and Orr-West both got the chance to test the car at Manfeild Circuit Chris Amon and Hampton Downs Motorsport Park recently, so they have an idea of what is ahead. Source: nzmotorracing.co.nz

Dominant Liam Burke crowned D1NZ PRO-SPORT SERIES CHAMPION Liam Burke has taken out the D1NZ Pro-Sport Series title, winning by an insurmountable 82 points. The Whangarei drifter has only had one off-the-podium finish this season. Three second place finishes and a win at the sole South Island round in Timaru cemented him as one of the most successful Pro-Sport Series competitors in D1NZ history. Unfortunately, Burke couldn’t cap off the season with another podium at Pukekohe Park for the season’s end. He was annoyed by the mistake he made against Calvin Clarke to drop out of contention but that didn’t take the shine off winning the title. “To be honest, I was quite gutted,” Burke said. “It was basically

all me that ruined it but getting the four podiums up until now is just crazy." The final round was won by Jordy Cole who had been a championship contender up until the penultimate round at Manfeild Circuit Chris Amon. A mechanical failure prevented him from qualifying and dropped him out of range to catch Burke. The final was punctuated by some of the toughest racing conditions seen all season, though not unfamiliar to those who competed at Pukekohe in years past. The 2019 Link ECU D1NZ National Drifting Championship dates will be revealed in the forthcoming months.

The pair emerged triumphant over 13 other hopefuls after a full day of testing at the Hampton Downs race circuit. Both drivers have extensive experience in karting and open wheel racing.
