New ‘fast charging’ Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV arrives in Australia Mitsubishi Motors’ new Outlander PHEV has arrived in Australia with a revised design, new technology, increased refinement and additional fast charging flexibility. In a comprehensive update to the best-selling EV in the Australian market, the new Outlander PHEV has adopted the styling changes from the Model Year 2017 Outlander range while introducing new technology and increased convenience. Audi Sport the class of the field at Albert Park Audi Sport Customer Racing Australia proved the class of the field at Round 2 of the Australian GT Championship race at Albert Park, claiming two race wins, including a 1-2-3 in the opening race, and the overall round victory. As part of the support categories for the Australian F1 Grand Prix, Kelvin van der Linde was unbeatable in the #74 Valvoline Audi R8 LMS, setting a new qualifying record and claiming two thrilling victories to finish the weekend with maximum points from his sessions. He was well supported by Geoff Emery, who narrowly missed pole in Qualifying 2. He then raced on to a strong eighth in the opening race and third in the final race, handing he and van der Linde the overall round victory.

Daniel Gaunt proved a revelation in the KFC Audi R8 LMS he shared with Gary Higgon, recording two podium positions in races one and three. The Audi Sport Customer Racing Australia team now moves to Perth, for the third round of the 2017 Australian GT Championship, with Emery fourth in the points standings.

James Koundouris’ fine form around the Albert Park circuit continued, qualifying the Supabarn Supermarkets entry inside the top ten in a competitive second qualifying session. He then climbed to sixth in his first race on Friday morning, backing up another sixth place on Sunday. It followed a sensational drive from co-driver Ash Walsh which put the #44 on the front row for race one, just 0.08s behind pole-sitter van der Linde. In two thrilling races Walsh went wheel to wheel for victory with van der Linde, and ultimately sealed a stunning third place in the opening, while a determined drive on Saturday netted fourth result behind Supercars enduro racer David Russell.

McConville and Grove claim Albert Park honours Alex Davison has overcome a slow start to his Albert Park campaign to claim his first win of the Porsche Carrera Cup Australia season in Sunday’s race four, while Cam McConville and Stephen Grove were the ultimate round winners at the popular Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix event. McConville finished second for the race from Andre Heimgartner and Nick McBride in fourth, holding David Wall and Jaxon Evans at bay to the chequered flag. The race four results placed both McConville and McBride equal on points,

however McConville’s higher position in the final race handed him the outright round victory. Wall and Evans finished race four in fifth and sixth, respectively, from Dylan O’Keeffe, Michael Almond, Lars Kern and James Abela in 10th. Grove continued his TAG Heuer Carrera Challenge dominance with 10th outright and another class win – his seventh straight this season – from Simon Ellingham, Marc Cini, Matt Palmer, Dean Cook and Graham Williams in 16th.

Productive Prologue for Toyota Gazoo Racing

TOYOTA GAZOO Racing completed a productive and positive official start to the 2017 FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) season during the two-day Prologue test at Monza, Italy. The team brought two updated TS050 HYBRIDs to Monza for the public launch of the car on Friday followed by two days of testing in the presence of all other WEC competitors. It therefore represented the first opportunity to compare performance with LMP1 rivals Porsche, although outright fastest lap times were not the top priority on a weekend of testing various set-ups and settings. Over five sessions over two days, including a night test on Saturday, the TS050 HYBRIDs recorded a combined 642 laps, 3719km, and set the overall fastest lap of the event, on Sunday afternoon with Nicolas Lapierre at the wheel. With five tests and over 30,000km already achieved with the new car this year, the Monza test was the final chance to gain additional data prior to the opening race of the season at Silverstone in two weeks. While the team has not previously visited Monza as part of its hybrid WEC project, the circuit holds happy memories for TOYOTA as the scene of its first-ever World Championship race win, when Geoff Lees and Hitoshi Ogawa drove the TS010 to victory in the 1992 Monza 1,000kms, part of the World Sportscar Championship.

INDYCAR unveils new images of 2018 Verizon IndyCar Series car design The design of the car to be used in Verizon IndyCar Series competition in 2018 is coming more into focus. INDYCAR, sanctioning body for the premier North American open-wheel racing series, released new images of the universal aerodynamic bodywork kit that will be used by all competitors in 2018. Following along with this year’s INDYCAR theme of “NEXT,” the computer-generated images are the next evolution of the car’s development process and provide more detail than concept sketches released in January.

Other noticeable features in the new car images include a lower engine cover that provides “a more traditional Indy car look,” according to Belli. Turbocharger inlets are moving to the inside of the radiator inlet ducts. The rear wing and front wing main plane are smaller in the new car look and

INDYCAR is on target to begin testing the car by mid-summer. Verizon IndyCar Series teams will still choose between Chevrolet and Honda engines for competition next season, but all cars will be outfitted with the universal kit that covers the Dallara IR-12 chassis that has been used since the 2012 season. As with the current aero kits provided by Chevrolet and Honda through the end of this season, the universal car will come in two configurations: one for superspeedway ovals and the other for street courses, road courses and short ovals. A key component of the new car is for it to generate most of its downforce from underneath instead of on top. This will improve racing and passing opportunities by decreasing the turbulent air that the Indy car leaves in its wake.

Tony Quinn first to 100 Australian GT Championship starts Tony Quinn has become the first driver in history to make one hundred Australian GT Championship race starts. Lining up on the grid for Race 2 at Albert Park he became the first driver to reach triple digits in an Australian GT career that began at Sandown 2008. Since then, Quinn has enjoyed a successful career with 11 race wins and 38 podium positions and sits seventh on the all-time winners list, while only Australian GT Championship winners Klark Quinn, David Wall and Bryce Washington have claimed more podium positions. “The highlight for me was when we came to the Grand Prix and I set the lap record in the Aston,” Quinn said. “It stood for five years because we didn’t come back here for five years!” “I’m nine years older,” he smiled when asked about the changes he’d seen during his nine years in the category, “and it makes a big difference! “Everybody needs to be on warning that when you’re 55 you might as well forget about Ron Dennis giving you a call, because he’s not gunna!” Quinn purchased Australian GT in 2011 and has overseen its rapid expansion to also include the CAMS Australian Endurance Championship and CAMS Australian GT Trophy Series presented by Pirelli.

Positive debut for the Porsche 919 Hybrids at the Prologue in Monza The Porsche LMP Team is pleased with its performance in Monza. Almost the entire 2017 FIA World Endurance Championship field met for a joint two-day test weekend at the Italian high-speed circuit near Milan. The so-called “Prologue” with 27 cars present, saw the public debut of both the new 919 Hybrid of the world championship title defender Porsche as well as the new Toyota TS050 Hybrid. Both manufacturers ran two cars. The 2017 duel of the two class 1 prototypes is eagerly awaited, especially at the Le Mans 24-Hours as the season’s highlight. At the Prologue, Toyota set the overall best lap time. Neel Jani (CH) recorded the fastest lap for a Porsche 919 Hybrid on Saturday when lapping the 5.793 kilometre long track in 1:31.666 minutes. The reigning world champion shares the 919 Hybrid with Porsche’s newcomer André Lotterer (DE) and Nick Tandy (GB) who returned to the LMP1 squad inside the Porsche family. Together the trio of the number 1 car covered 331 laps (1,906 kilometres) in two days. At the wheel of the number 2 Porsche it was Earl Bamber (NZ) who set the fastest lap in 1:31.823 minutes. Just like for the sister car, this was achieved during a qualifying simulation on Saturday evening. Bamber took over Mark Webber’s seat and teams up with Timo Bernhard (DE) and Brendon Hartley (NZ). The number 2 car crew completed a total of 329 laps (1,894 km) during the Prologue in Monza.

Toyota builds a dream toy for adults Toyota is rekindling childhood memories with the reveal of a stunning concept vehicle that brings together the iconic Tonka and “unbreakable” HiLux brands. A full-size dream toy for adults, the HiLux Tonka Concept is an impressive rock-crawling truck that combines the enviable reputations for toughness and durability that dominate the Toyota and Tonka DNAs. The high-riding off-roader celebrates HiLux’s breakthrough in becoming Australia’s best-selling vehicle last year, alongside significant global anniversaries for both Toyota and Tonka. It was conceived, designed, assembled and tested by designers and engineers from Toyota Australia’s 150-strong product planning and development division. Product design chief Nicolas Hogios said the extreme style and capability of the HiLux Tonka Concept would capture the imagination of kids and adults alike. “We have taken Tonka out of the sand pit and reinvented HiLux from top to bottom and from nose to tail,” Mr Hogios said. “Inspired by the Tonka trucks that kids play with in their backyards, the HiLux Tonka Concept goes way beyond the already hugely capable abilities of HiLux to traverse rocks and other rugged terrain,” he said. “The HiLux Tonka Concept is dramatic evidence

that our local team loves to have fun, we’re keen to explore new ideas and we’re always looking to push the boundaries of what’s possible,” he said. Underneath the dramatic black-and-yellow livery of the HiLux Tonka Concept is the top-of-the-range production HiLux - the SR5 double cab with a powerful 2.8-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine. An extensive makeover starts with substantially extra ground clearance - an increase in ride height of 150mm (6 inches). Combined with a high-riding axle, heavy-duty suspension and 35-inch diameter tyres, the HiLux Tonka Concept is equipped to power over rugged terrain that would be off-limits to other off-roaders. A new front bar is compatible with the vehicle’s safety systems while the bonnet has a carbon-fibre skin and features an aggressive “power bulge” and air scoops. High-performance off-road LED lighting in the bar and roof pod combine to provide excellent night vision for off-road trails. A rugged bash plate made from 6mm-thick alloy is designed to protect the sump and other vital components. Tubular side rails protect the body and chassis.

Behind the cabin, almost everything has been changed. The transformation includes a new tailgate, also wrapped in carbon fibre, that incorporates an integrated spoiler and two air vents for optimal airflow. A durable, lightweight strap rather than a handle releases the tailgate. New website gives consumer the power to report car fakes An online reporting hub empowering consumers to submit a report aimed at assisting investigators in the detection and seizure of counterfeit car parts has received support from the Department of Immigration and Border Protection. Launched by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI), the Genuine Is Best campaign website www.genuineisbest.com.au/report-a-counterfeit enables consumers to submit details of parts they suspect may not be the genuine article. Recent international seizures have indicated the scope of the counterfeit parts problem, with raids in China and the Middle East unearthing massive volumes of sub-standard and often dangerous parts potentially headed for Australian shores. Consumers who believe they have been sold or had their car fitted with a counterfeit part can report the details via the reporting hub. This information will be provided to the Original Equipment Manufacturer so that it may investigate any breaches of its intellectual property rights. The OEM will then submit a formal notification to the Australian Department of Immigration and Border Protection. The Department is empowered under Federal legislation, specifically the Trade Marks Act 1995 or the Copyright Act 1968, to take action in respect of the alleged breach, which could include the seizure of the property. Erin Dale, Commander Customs Compliance in the Department of Immigration and Border Protection, said more information would assist in curtailing the counterfeit issue.

“The Department works in partnership with the automotive industry to prevent counterfeit car parts from crossing the Australian border,” Cmdr Dale said. “It enforces intellectual property rights through Australia’s Notice of Objection Scheme, which enables it to seize importations of counterfeit and pirated goods at the border. Each year we enforce over 600 Notices of Objection on behalf of brand owners. “During the 2015-16 financial year we seized more than 190,000 individual items of counterfeit and pirated goods worth about $17 million. “The more information that the Department has on suspected counterfeit goods, the greater its ability to identify and intercept these goods. The online reporting site supports FCAI Chief Executive Tony Weber’s call for more attention to be placed on dangerous automotive components. “Millions of dollars worth of counterfeit car parts seized over the past 12 months in warehouses from China to the Middle East demonstrated the scale of this issue. It’s an international trade which has been estimated to be worth US$20 billion a year. “This is where we need the help of Australian vehicle owners. By taking an active role in uncovering these counterfeit components, panels and parts, consumers are not just protecting themselves and their fellow road users, but also working to assist the Australian Government in curbing their illegal importation and distribution.”

FCAI commends insurer’s genuine parts policy change Australia’s peak automotive industry body has called on the wider insurance industry to follow the lead of insurance giant IAG, which will urge repairers to use new genuine parts in vehicle repairs.

“The writing is on the wall for Australian insurers. The evidence shows non-genuine is a risk, and as an industry we applaud IAG for pursuing this change in policy. Every Australian insurer should do the same.

Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) Chief Executive Tony Weber commended IAG on its initiative and said all insurers should commit to road safety and better vehicle repairs by following IAG’s lead.

“New genuine parts sourced from an automotive brand’s authorised dealer are the safest, highest quality, most readily available, most efficient and easiest-to-use option for vehicle repairs.”

“This move by IAG sends a strong signal to consumers and to the insurance and motoring industries. Today, we are a step closer to safer roads, safer cars, better repairs and the best in quality parts for Australian drivers,” he said.

Mr Weber said the change was a wake-up call to car owners, and a reminder for them to review their insurance policies to ensure that only genuine parts are fitted in repairs.

“IAG is the first insurer to commit to encouraging smash repairers to use genuine parts, which is a massive step forward for the safety of Australian consumers.” The policy change comes as engineering tests undertaken by the FCAI’s Genuine is Best initiative continue to show the dangerous inferiority of non-genuine and counterfeit parts.

“The FCAI is calling for car owners to review their product disclosure statements and find out exactly what their insurer’s policy is on genuine parts. If your insurer cares about your safety, genuine parts should be used in every vehicle repair. “The only way to ensure you are protecting yourself and your loved ones is to ensure genuine parts, acquired through the vehicle maker’s authorised supply chain, are the only parts fitted to your car. Anything else is a risk. Genuine is always best,” Mr Weber said.
