Porsche struggle but win at Le Mans Porsche continue to dominate sports car racing throughout the global racing community and none more so than the 24 Hours of Le Mans. It was a stunning performance from Earl Bamber, Timo Bernhard and Brendon Hartley to come from second last through to secure the 19th overall victory for the marque. It was a similar situation for Porsche exactly 40 years ago. In 1977 Jacky Ickx (BE), Jürgen Barth (DE) and Hurley Haywood (USA) came back in their Porsche 936 from 42nd position to win the race. Ickx’s #3 car (chassis 002) that had won in the previous year, broke

down early in the race so the Belgium joined Hurley Haywood and Jürgen Barth in the team’s #4 sister car (chassis 001). However, it wasn’t straight forward for the #4 car either. A ‘broken’ engine nearly halted the Porsche 936/77 in the last hour. The mechanics removed the ignition and injection of the failed cylinder, and Jurgen limped the smoking car around the track to finish after 24 hours while running, as required.

Wood claims maiden victory in Townsville Lamborghini ace Glen Wood has claimed his maiden CAMS Australian GT Championship victory around the streets of Townsville. The Interlloy M Motorsport driver dominated the second race of the weekend, while two strong performances in the first and third races also ensured him of the round win. Third fastest in opening qualifying, Wood then lowered his personal best in Qualifying 2 to line up third on the grid.

He then raced to a solid podium place in the opening race, which set him up for a dominant performance in race two, where clever use of strategy saw him leap Liam Talbot in the pit stop cycle. Another podium in the final race of the weekend assured Wood of his first round win ahead of Geoff Emery and Kelvin van der Linde in the Valvoline Jamec Pem Audi. The Audi duo found themselves tied on points with Talbot for second, though fourth place in Race 3 was enough to see them take second for the round. Championship leader Talbot claimed

victory in the opening race of the weekend, and maintains a 28-point advantage at the top of the standings. The Mega Racing Porsche driver showed strong pace all weekend, controlling the opening race and scoring healthy points in both races two and three. Max Twigg claimed the final race of the weekend in sensational style, controlling the race following the pit stop sequence to head home Duvashen Padayachee in the Supabarn Supermarkets entry. The 2017 CAMS Australian GT Championship now builds to its season climax at Sandown (September 15-17) where a new champion will be crowned.

Mitsubishi creates local jobs for people with disability Adelaide, South Australia - More than 20 jobs will be created for people with disability thanks to a new contract between service provider Orana and Mitsubishi Motors Australia. Orana and Mitsubishi announced the contract in June, which will see Orana employees assemble and pack more than 82,000 service kits for Mitsubishi dealerships nationally in the first year, with this number set to jump to almost 200,000 in the following months. A vital tool for Mitsubishi dealers, the service kits will ensure all parts required for regular vehicle maintenance are available to dealers in one complete set. Orana CEO Nick Mihalaras said the organisation had been working with Mitsubishi for a number of years but the new project presented a number of new opportunities for employees.

“Our relationship spans more than 27 years and it’s continually evolving to ensure we meet the needs of Mitsubishi, at the same time as providing work and development opportunities for our employees,” Mr Mihalaras said. “The new contract is significant in that it will almost triple our Mitsubishi workforce and has the potential to grow even more in the coming years.” Orana will begin by building service kits for Mitsubishi’s ASX, Lancer and Outlander, with the project expected to grow to include the entire model range in the months to come. Employees at Orana’s Para Hills West factory, recently damaged by fire, will also benefit from the contract. They will build the pallets used to store and ship completed kits across the nation. Mitsubishi Motors Australia CEO

Mutsuhiro Oshikiri said the company was committed to supporting the South Australian community. “Mitsubishi Motors has a long history of working with Orana in South Australia,” he said. Our Australian head office is based in Adelaide and we feel it is important that we play a part in supporting South Australian industry to the benefit of our local community.” Mr Mihalaras said he was proud of the relationship that had provided so many South Australians with disability employment. “Mitsubishi has demonstrated a community spirit and a corporate social responsibility that not many organisations at a local level demonstrate and we are extremely grateful to be so closely involved with the company.” Source: autonews.net.au

Aston Martin undresses Valkyrie First hinted at in July 2016, the aerodynamic shape, cockpit structure and styling have now been completely unmasked to reveal its purposeful lines designed to generate maximum downforce and minimal drag. Red Bull Advanced Technologies and Aston Martin’s design team have worked on a teardrop shape for the cockpit which features a Formula 1-styled reclined driving position and minimalist ergonomics designed to keep driver focus on the road. Venturi tunnels beneath the car suck the super light mass of carbon-fibre to the road, courtesy of Red Bull Racing’s genius F1 designer Adrian Newey, who took the pursuit of downforce and aerodynamic efficiency down to microbial levels. Weight saving was the primary concern for improving speed and increasing efficiency of the vehicle powertrain. Going to extreme lengths to reduce the weight of the Aston Martin winged badge, the Aston Martin Design Team created a chemical etched aluminium badge 99.4 per cent lighter than the regular enamel badges adorning Aston road cars, and only 70 microns thick – 30 per cent thinner than a human hair, and lacquered to finish. Stylistically, Newey changed the original car’s cockpit and wheel arches to include more openings in the body surface.

The headlights are F1 inspired also, with the low beam and high beam components stripped of cladding to reveal an anodised aluminium frame, between 30 and 40 per cent lighter than the lightest production headlights Aston Martin makes. At the rear, with the tiny centre highmount LED brake light mounted to the tip of what Aston describes as a sharklike fin running the length of Valkyrie’s ‘spine’ airbox and rear carbon body. It only measures 5.5mm wide and 9.5mm high – making it the world’s smallest light of its type. Aston Martin’s creative director of interiors says it’s been a labour of love, then some.

says the project is almost finished, but remains subject to evolution. “I would say we’re around 95 per cent of the way there with exterior design,” he says. Nurnberger says the new body outlets are a change to the original design but are worth the extra effort for the sake of aerodynamic efficiency. “The fact that they are so effective gives them their own functional beauty, but we’ve finessed them without impacting on functionality,” he concludes, saying the new outlets also provide a viewing window to see the front suspension wishbones.

“It’s been a tremendous challenge to make the interior packaging work. We’ve embraced Red Bull Racing’s Formula One ethos and approached from a different angle than conventional road cars,” he says. “We’ve started from a position where you think something is impossible and work at it until you find a way to make it work…fighting for millimetres everywhere, it’s been fantastic seeing customers try the interior buck for size.” The Valkyrie’s interior, despite being spartan and incredibly minimal, can seat two 98 percentile adults. Audi on form around the Townsville streets The Audi Sport Customer Racing Australia squad enjoyed a stellar weekend of Australian GT racing around the streets of Townsville. Geoff Emery and Kelvin van der Linde kept their Championship charge alive with a sensational pole position on Saturday morning in the Valvoline Jamec Pem Audi R8 LMS, before banking crucial points in the title fight. Also showing incredible pace, Ash Walsh’s quest for the title was well supported by the impressive Duvashen Padayachee. Drafted in at the eleventh hour, Padayachee showed the Supabarn Supermarkets Audi had race winning pace, combining brilliantly with Walsh in what was a critical round for the Championship. A late charge in Race 3 came close to netting victory for Walsh and Padayachee, only to fall little more than two seconds adrift at the chequered flag after a mesmerising performance in the closing laps. Importantly for Walsh, he’ll leave Townsville with a healthy haul of points, keeping him firmly in Championship contention as the season now moves to Sandown for the final round of the year.

New V6 engine tested for Supercars Championship Next season sees the appearance of the Gen2 V6 engine in the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship. Based on the unit used by the factory Cadillac GT3 program, the engine has undergone extensive development by General Motors in America and more recently given its first track test with Triple eight Racing. The team fitted the 3.6 litre V6 turbo unit to its Supercarbased Sandman car, which completed 256km of running at the Norwell Motorplex on the Gold Coast. It is expected that the new V6 engine will debut in the Supercars Championship via a series of wildcard entries before the team utilises it fully in 2019. The V6 engine test was successfully driven by Jamie Whincup, Craig Lowndes and his Pirtek Enduro Cup co-driver Steven Richards. Also to debut next season for the team will be a new Commodore that will be powered by the existing V8 engine.

Martin fighting for title contention in Pro Mazda Series Australian Anthony Martin and Brazilian Victor Franzoni are battling for title contention in the 12 round Pro Mazda series in the USA. Both came away with wins at the recent double round at the Road America circuit near Elkhart Lake in Wisconsin. Martin is driving the #8 car for Cape Motorsports having won the 2016 Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda with seven victories, nine pole positions and 11 total podium finishes in 16 races. Martin claimed a Mazda scholarship and prize package worth $363,850 toward his 2017 Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires campaign. The Pro Mazda single seater currently utilizes the Mazda Renesis rotary engine as remanufactured and serviced by SpeedSource Race Engineering. The engine generates approximately 260 horsepower - 90 horsepower more than a USF2000 Mazda MZR powerplant - and is capable of powering cars to speeds of 160 mph.

Supercars to compete for points at Australia F1 Grand Prix The 2018 Australian F1 Grand Prix weekend will see the Australia Supercars Championship compete for series points for the first time. A six-year deal has been confirmed that will see the series continue as a support category for the F1 meeting through to 2023. The premier Australian series has held 21 non-championship events at the Albert Park venue since 1996. With new F1 owners, Liberty Media, keen to increase the fan F1 base, recent discussions have resulted in the next Grand Prix also hosting the Supercars championship round still as a support category. “This fantastic opportunity to host championship races at the Albert Park Grand Prix Circuit will further showcase Supercars on the world-stage,” commented Supercars CEO, James Warburton. “I am delighted to say that thanks to the hard work and perseverance of the AGPC, and the foresight of Formula 1, it is now a reality. “A Championship round and the six-year contract extension through to 2023 will be warmly received by our fans and add a new dimension to the event.”

Randle shines at Hungaroring Formula Renault Eurocup debut Australian single seater driver Thomas Randle made an impressive debut at the fifth round of the 2017 Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup Championship at the Hungaroring circuit. It was the reigning Toyota Racing Champion’s first outing at the 4.38 km track, competing alongside fellow Australian internationals Alex Peroni, Thomas Maxwell, Zane Goddard and Luis Leeds. Saturday’s first qualifying session was held in the rain with Randle claiming the second fastest time in his group of 15 drivers, putting him fourth grid spot for the first race on the back of the second group of cars that had enjoyed a drier qualifying run. The young Aussie driver’s first race was over before the completion of the opening lap. A turn one incident left Randle’s car with broken steering after Frenchman Gabriel Aubry failed to see Randle on the inside of the first corner. The final two races of the weekend saw Randle battling to stay in the top ten. He finished with one championship point and placed 14th overall for the weekend. “I wasn’t expecting to be so competitive so soon,” commented Randle. “It was very satisfying to be able to quickly adapt to a new car, team and track, and to qualify right near the front having never previously driven the car in the wet was a real highlight of my weekend.”

The Importance of Genuine Parts Underscored in a Bold New Nissan Brand Campaign Would you trust a stranger with the people or things you love? That is the question at the heart of an entertaining brand campaign launched by Nissan earlier this year promoting the benefits of Nissan Genuine Parts. What’s the deal? Despite appearing like the real thing, non-genuine parts are not made, selected or approved by the vehicle’s manufacturer and as such can cause serious problems down the track. Genuine parts, on the other hand, have been rigorously tested to meet high quality, safety and performance standards and ensure the vehicle in question will drive, function and protect the driver and passengers the way it was intended. ‘Beware of Strangers’ Honing in on this key difference, the Nissan Genuine Parts Brand Campaign engages and amuses viewers by depicting non-genuine parts as strangers who are not

fit for the job. You wouldn’t trust a stranger with your family, after all, so why would you trust a stranger with the vital functions of your vehicle and the safety of its occupants? Chris Winterton, creative director at V.I., the Melbourne-based ad agency behind the campaign, explains their creative approach:

“The concept of being wary of strangers is a natural human instinct and a powerful way for us to frame our message. Plus, we’ve used a good dose of humour to bring these quirky strangers to life. It makes this story intriguing and impossible to ignore.” The hero video for the ‘Beware of Strangers’ campaign features five ‘strangers’ – generic, non-genuine alternatives to Nissan Genuine Brake Pads, Roof Racks, Wipers, Oil Filter and Bullbar – and each of these quirky characters also features in their own video. (All six videos can be viewed on the Nissan website: nissan.com.au/Genuine).

THINK TWICE ABOUT NON-GENUINE

Industry News Always insist on Genuine The campaign successfully highlights the serious nature of a growing problem in the auto industry. With more awareness initiatives like this, drivers can make better, more informed choices about their vehicles and help to reduce the amount of inferior or counterfeit parts currently in market. As a trade repairer, you can of course do your part too. You should only buy parts and accessories that are tried and tested by a manufacturer, and designed specifically for its vehicles. By encouraging your customers to choose Genuine, you’ll be providing value for money and peace of mind – two qualities that are likely to lead to increased customer retention. Tokyo Olympic torch may be lit via flying car A Toyota flying car may carry the torch to light the 2020 Tokyo Olympic flame.

before landing awkwardly and surrounded by observers.

World media are reporting the world’s second-largest car maker aims to have the flying car’s driver – possibly an athlete – do the opening ceremony deed.

Cartivator project leader Tsubasa Nakamura posted on his blog that Toyota’s involvement was a big coup. “I really appreciate Toyota group companies, and other companies or individuals supporting us so far. We are able to accelerate our development because of this support.”

Toyota has reportedly invested about US$400,000 (A$529,800) in Japanese start-up company Cartivator Resource Management, which could have a prototype flying car ready in 2019, followed by the final vehicle in 2020. It’s been named SkyDrive. A short video featuring Cartivator’s “basic-looking large drone…..doesn’t inspire confidence in the technology at this stage”, as some media describe it. Some companies are already inviting customers to put deposits down on flying cars, including Dutch company Pal-V, France’s Airbus and AeroMobil from Slovakia. US company Terrafugia has been working on one since 2011. Uber announced its own big-budget flying taxi venture, aiming to have a vertical take-off and landing taxi debut at the 2020 World Expo in Dubai.

Autonomour tech set to propel market The market for LiDar sensor technology components is predicted to become increasingly valuable as the demand for semi-autonomous vehicle technology ramps up. A 165-page report from Markets and Markets indicates the global automotive market for LiDar senors will reach US$735 million (AU$965 million) by 2025, due to increased global governmental push for vehicle safety and driver assist technology from manufacturers. The continued rise in demand from OEMs for autonomous or semiautonomous LiDar systems is also accelerating demand, although high costs for installation of the system is keeping more widespread adoption at a premium. Manufacturers like Ford, General Motors, Audi and Volvo are developing autonomous vehicle programs using LiDar, with European markets expected to be the biggest supplied region by value and volume.

compliment,” he says. “There’s a lot of learning yet to go by carmakers to incorporate lidar in a thoughtful way,” he adds, talking to IEEE Spectrum about the crucial step being to get to market with a product before everyone else.

It was only in December 2016 that Velodyne announced its breakthrough solid-state LiDar system which it officially revealed in April. The subwoofer and sound technologies developer currently retails its VLP-16 “Puck” sensor, which records 300,000 points of information per second, at US$7999 (AU$10,500) each on its website.

“The first mover sets the standard, software is 60 per cent of the effort. So [later], if you show up with a new piece of hardware, it may not fit in.”

CEO of Velodyne, Marty Neese says solid-state LiDar is an evolution of the high-tech components over conventional 360-degree scanners seen used by Ford’s Fusion autonomous concept. “I don’t necessarily believe that [solidstate LiDar] will obviate or replace the 360-degree units – it will be a

Volvo Cars going all electric

Made of organic materials, the concept Vision product acts as a tyre and wheel and is 3D-printed.

“This is about the customer,” president and chief executive Hakan Samuelsson says. “People increasingly demand electrified cars and we want to respond to our customers’ current and future needs. You can now pick and choose whichever electrified Volvo you wish.”

“Michelin began by listening to people, from city motorists to race drivers, from farmers to airline pilots, from engineering equipment drivers to children barely old enough to ride bikes,” the company says. “Some 90 people, divided into four panels around the world were questioned about their relationship with mobility.” From these discussions, important needs were identified, in particular concerning sustainability, while grip in all weather conditions and effective braking in all circumstances are also essential.

Every Volvo launched from 2019 will have an electric motor, Volvo Cars says. The announcement represents one of the most significant moves by any car maker to embrace electrification.

Volvo Cars will introduce a portfolio of electrified cars across its model range, embracing fully electric cars, plug in hybrid cars and mild hybrid cars. It will launch five fully electric cars between 2019 and 2021, three of which will be Volvo models and two of which will be high performance electrified cars from Polestar, Volvo Cars’ performance car arm. These five cars will be supplemented by a range of petrol and diesel plug in hybrid and mild hybrid 48 volt options on all models. “This announcement marks the end of the solely combustion engine-powered car (for us),” Samuelsson says. “Volvo Cars has stated that it plans to have sold a total of one million electrified cars by 2025. When we said it we meant it. This is how we are going to do it.” The announcement underlines Volvo Cars’ commitment to minimising its environmental impact and making the cities of the future cleaner.

Michelin says the materials used minimise the tyre’s environmental footprint, while using 3D printers makes it possible to use just the right amount of rubber, extending its life depending on needs.

Volvo Cars is focused on reducing the carbon emissions of both its products as well as its operations. It aims to have climate neutral manufacturing operations by 2025.

Vision has an interior architecture capable of supporting vehicles and can’t explode or blowout, the company says.

Volvo Cars design senior vice-president Thomas Ingenlath will lead Polestar as its chief executive officer.

It is also equipped with sensors, which provides real time information about its condition.

The decision also follows this month’s announcement that Volvo Cars will turn Polestar into a new, separately-branded, electrified global high-performance car company.
