more drama in new zealand as Lawson wins GP and title Liam Lawson is the 2019 New Zealand Grand Prix winner and the Castrol Toyota Racing Series champion after a dramatic finale at Manfeild Circuit Chris Amon in the Manawatu.

2

In a race peppered by Safety Cars, race stoppages and penalties, Lawson emerged through it all to take both prizes. A devastated Marcus Armstrong was given a five second penalty for a move on Lawson during the race, but it proved to be academic. Once Lawson had established himself in second place, later on after the third race restart, there was nothing Armstrong could do to prevent Lawson winning the series on points. He tried his best to win the Grand Prix with a series of super-fast laps as he tried to find the five seconds he needed to mitigate his penalty, but Lawson responded and Armstrong, for the second year in a row at the Grand Prix, was left with only crumbs. After the race, Lawson sought out Armstrong in the garages to console him after an epic championship, that put the Castrol New Zealand Racing Series firmly on the motorsport radar as the best series in the world at this time of year for up and coming single seater racers. Rivalries aside, it was a touching gesture from one star of the future to another. Only eight cars finished the Grand Prix after the most incident-packed race of the 15race championship. Mcrae crushes leadfoot festival and wins for third consecutive year Scottish-born Alister McRae has upheld his family’s legendary driving status and made it a threepeat at the recent Leadfoot Festival, and notched up a new record time in the mighty Vantage Subaru WRX STI. McRae had to give it absolutely everything to drop the winning time into the 47-second bracket for the first time in the Hahei-based event’s eight-year history. He even gave himself a fright as he thundered up the 1.6km driveway hill climb to clock 47.99 secs.

6

“The previous run for me I thought was almost perfect, but you have always got to dig a bit deeper. I didn’t know the time when I got to the top but both my leg and my hand was shaking so that means I scared myself,” McRae says. Event founder, Rod Millen, had looked on track to wrestle back the trophy for his own festival, when he set the fastest time of the day on the Friday. However, bogging his wickedly-powerful Pikes Peak Toyota Celica down slightly on the start-line was enough to drop him off the podium with his 50.14 secs, no match for United States visitor Paul Dallenbach, who was thrilled with his first top three placing in his monstrous open wheeler. Collins Automotive technicians

Alan Bean ge, p ictu red lef t, p re se

GetGenuine points. ,000 180 ith nw so Ja

This month we talk to Jason Land, owner and Managing Director of Collins Automotive Technicians in Hamilton. Tell us a bit about yourself and the business In 2011, I took the plunge and purchased Collins Auto Electrical from John Collins. We have experienced continued growth, having to relocate to three different premises over the years, and after the 2016 acquisition of Automotive Technicians and AH Franks our team of 18 finally settled in at our new Quentin Drive complex, also rebranding ourselves Collins Automotive Technicians to better reflect our business offerings. Our new, purpose-built facility houses 1400sqm of workshop space and 23 bays and plenty of parking, allowing 30-40 cars a day to go through. Although we specialise in diagnostics, we proudly cover everything else from auto electrical, air conditioning, mechanical repairs, vehicle servicing, all automotive parts supply and installation, warrant of fitness, vehicle inspections, tyres, wheel alignments, and all of this on any marque of vehicle of any age. In our downtime, my wife Carley and I are into motorsport, cars and running around after our nearly 3 year old twin daughters. Carley has an old HR Holden that we’re slowly doing up, and I am involved in motorsport, most recently driving a NZV8 Race Ute last season, and we enjoy getting out on our jet skis with the girls. What sets you apart from your competitors? Customer service is top priority. We work extremely hard to provide a comfortable place for customers to come to, which puts their mind at ease when it comes to vehicle repairs. We like customers to be able to trust us and their experience at Collins to exceed expectations. Getting the little things right is important. We focus a lot on training and currently have four apprentices. We’re big on apprentices as it’s hard to find qualified staff. Our modern fit-out and super organised, large space helps to retain good staff. We’re a big professional outfit, there is nothing the techs could want for in terms of tools and equipment, the workshop is modern, clean and a nice place to work. As well as this we do lots of social stuff, have fun and our management style is relaxed and easy going which means the team all have buy-in to the vision, and work hard to go the extra mile. Why Genuine Parts? We can stand behind genuine parts! There can be a lot of junk amongst the aftermarket offering. It’s a choice customers have, but with genuine parts, we can offer a warranty, and we know it’s going to fit right, first time.

10

Congratulations to Jason and Carley, who won the 180,000 points grand prize in the 2018 Winger Hamilton promotion.

“We’re not sure yet what we’ll spend the points on, with the many changes in the business and twin girls, we are probably due a holiday and some R&R!”

Proposed reforms are a step too far Industry training organisation, MITO, is concerned that the wide-ranging reforms proposed to vocational education in New Zealand will exacerbate skills shortages, seriously undermine the apprenticeship and training system and believes the proposal is a step too far. “The current apprenticeship and training model managed by industry training organisations is effective and economically lean but has been completely side-lined in the new proposals.” says MITO chief executive Janet Lane. It is proposed that ITOs are disbanded and the responsibility of developing qualifications is transferred to “Industry Skills Bodies”, with the delivery of training managed by one national institution, combining the current 16 polytechnics. Under this structure, the national institution would take over the current 145,000 apprentices and trainees and 25,000 employers plus the existing 110,000 polytechnic enrolments. “The next step needs wider consultation with options for industry to consider. Simply transferring 145,000 ITO apprentices and learners to a newly formed national institution will create unnecessary disruption in this period of significant skills shortages across industries in New Zealand,” says Lane. The Government has opened consultation on the proposed reforms until March 27. “The proposals represent the largest shift in New Zealand’s tertiary education and training system in over 25 years. MITO does not believe that a six-week period for consultation will provide sufficient time for robust debate and meaningful consideration of the far-reaching implications,” says Lane. Queenstown could make hydrogen vehicle fuel Hydrogen has the potential to be a new industry for Queenstown. Producing hydrogen as an alternative source of energy is identified as a major research and development opportunity for the district, a report commissioned by Queenstown Lakes District Council and New Zealand Trade and Enterprise shows. Sapere Research Group assessed a number of industries to determine the potential to attract international research and development to the district. It forms part of a joint search by the council and NZTE for new opportunities to help diversify the local economy, council economic development manager Peter Harris says. He says the success of the Southern Hemisphere Proving Grounds (SHPG) for winter automotive testing sparked the research. “SHPG’s success is outstanding and we were interested to see if there were any other industries that might be attracted here.” Harris says the report shows hydrogen would likely have the most potential. “It could be made using hydroelectricity, solar or wind, and would be used as a zero-emission fuel for buses, trucks, cars and vessels. It could ultimately form a new industry in our district.” Source: autotalk.co.nz

Perfect Autobody

lef t) wi th

Operating for over 30 years, Perfect Autobody Ltd in Sockburn, Christchurch, was recently taken over by Garry Williams and his business partner Paul Choat. We caught up with Garry, to get some insight on his business and experience of the GetGenuine Rewards Programme. Tell us a bit about the business and what sets you apart from your competitors We have a team of 21 and we all work hard to provide exceptional service that goes beyond customers’ expectations. The business regularly invests in quality equipment and training in order to maintain our position as a market leading collision repair facility. We are also proudly committed to environmentally friendly and sustainable business practices. How long have you been in business? The business has been running for 30 years, it was originally called Perfect Paint & Panels Ltd. Paul and I bought into the business three years ago, Wayne Houghton is the original owner. Do you have any plans for expansion in the near future? We have just acquired the PIRTEC Building next door – this will be our structural repair shop. Stage one of the transition into the new building has just been completed.

2018 Mercedes-Benz Triple Points Promotion Congratulations to Garry who won the Petronas Motorsport Pack worth over $1,000, in the 2018 Mercedes-Benz Triple Points Promotion! Garry was entered into the draw by reaching his Mercedes-Benz genuine parts purchase target in November 2018.

Why do you use Genuine Parts? We are very passionate about using genuine parts - they simply fit better, look better and last longer. What is the percentage of genuine parts you purchase? 100% genuine parts for the last three years! What have you spent your GetGenuine points on? Our latest redemption was just before Christmas, it was a tent and a trampoline for the family. What is one of your worst aftermarket experiences? Fixing the bonnet of a Nissan Pulsar with aftermarket parts - the steel was too soft and upon closing the bonnet it dented and damaged the paint. It was a complete nightmare. What is the secret of your success as a business? A high level of service and being very customer centric and professional.

Historic touring car class has new fan in Greg Murphy New Zealand’s Archibalds Historic Touring Car Series (HTC) has a new fan in four-time former Bathurst winner, and now TV motorsport show co-host Greg Murphy. With fellow multi-time Bathurst 1000 winner Jim Richards, Murphy was one of two guest drivers invited to join the grid at the second round of the 2019 Archibalds NZ Historic Touring Car Series, at the annual Skope Classic historic motor race meeting at Christchurch’s Mike Pero Motorsport Park.

20

Though he was doing double duty at the meeting – also demoing the hi-tech F1-style Rodin FZED single-seater – the man they call Murph proved a real star turn behind the wheel of local man Peter Sturgeon’s ex Cecotto/Brancatelli BMW E30 M3 Gp A car, qualifying it on pole and winning two of the four Archibalds Historic Touring Car Series races over the weekend. "That car is just mega," he said of the quick, nimble little Gp A two-door, in which it won the first race untroubled, but then spent the other three battling away mightily, first with Christchurch car dealer Bruce Miles, then Motueka category veteran Brett Stevens. Miles won the second race in his later model ex Prince Leopold van Bayern BMW E36 320i SuperTourer. Stevens, driving his Ford Sierra RS500 Cosworth Group A car, then used the superior power of its turbocharged engine to win the third. It was Murphy who won the final race, his second victory of the weekend from Stevens, Miles and usual category fast man Arron Black (BMW E30 M3 Gp A) from Dunedin. Source: nzmotorracing.co.nz

Dick Bennett receives New Zealand motorsport honour Born and raised in Dunedin in 1947, Dick developed a love of motorsport from an early age. Keen to pursue his career in Europe, he accompanied driver David Oxton – the reigning New Zealand Formula Ford Champion – on what was billed as a two-year stint in the UK in 1972. After working for Fred Opert Racing and March Engineering, Dick then joined Ron Dennis’ Project 4 operation and engineered Niki Lauda to the BMW M1 Procar title in 1979 and Stefan Johansson to the British Formula 3 crown the following season.

Motorsport News

UK based Kiwi, Dick Bennetts, has been honoured by being named as a founder member of the New Zealand International Grand Prix Legends’ Club. The WSR Team Principal was inducted at a special legends’ lunch during the New Zealand Motor Cup event at Hampton Downs in January.

Setting up West Surrey Racing in early 1981 to run Jonathan Palmer; racing protégé of West Surrey Engineering boss Mike Cox, Dick oversaw an incredible debut race win and debut championship victory for the team. It was the first of five British titles to be won by WSR; Ayrton Senna, Mauricio Gugelmin, Mika Hakkinen and Rubens Barrichello also triumphing. Two Macau GP wins and several one-off victories in Germany, Italy and Japan were also achieved as well as 56 British F3 victories – a record at the point at which the team exited the series at the end of 1995. Dick moved WSR into the British Touring Car Championship in 1996, an ultra-successful period for the team that has brought them ‘Manufacturer’ status with Ford, Honda, MG and, since 2017, BMW. In that time, a host of top-level drivers, including Paul Radisich, Nigel Mansell, Tom Kristensen, Andy Priaulx and Colin Turkington have climbed behind the wheel of WSR-run cars and achieved great success. Dick shows no signs of slowing down either, with the 2018 season being one of WSR’s best ever as the team, based in Sunbury-on-Thames, won the BTCC Drivers, Teams and Manufacturers titles, and head into the year targeting further success. Paddon joins GRC Europe grid WRC driver and Production World Rally champion, Hayden Paddon, is the latest addition to the Global Rallycross Europe championship grid. Hyundai factory driver, Paddon has made the switch from WRC to GRC for the series’ inaugural 2019 season. The New Zealander will be driving a Pantera RX6 car with a Hyundai i30 body kit. “I have been in Rallying for a long time, so Rallycross is not completely new to me, but I will have to adapt to cars racing alongside me. GRC Europe will be a new challenge and I am looking forward to taking it on, joining the other drivers throughout the year and trying to be competitive”, the 31-year-old Kiwi said. “We are delighted to have Hayden in our line-up now. He has always been one of my favourite drivers with a unique style. He is exciting to watch, so I am sure, the fans will love him,” GRC Europe CEO Max J. Pucher added. The 2019 GRC Europe season kicks off with the official test at the MJP Arena Fuglau (Austria) in early May, before the points chase starts in Dreux (France) on 29 and 30 June. NZTA raises toll road charges from March 1 The New Zealand Transport Agency has advised motorcyclists, motorists and heavy truck and bus operators that toll road charges increased as of 1 March 2019. It says these increases are in line with inflation and are necessary to ensure that the toll roads remain on course to repay their debt within planned timeframes. Service and transaction fees remain unchanged. The Northern Gateway Toll Road (NGTR) north of Auckland will see the current price of $2.30 for motorcycles and light cars rise to $2.40 per trip. The charge for heavy trucks and buses will increase from $4.70 to $4.80 per trip. The Tauranga Eastern Link Toll Road (TELTR) will see the current prices of $2.00 for motorcycles and light cars rise to $2.10, while the current fee of $5.00 for heavy trucks and buses will increase to $5.20. The Takitimu Drive Toll Road (TDTR) will see the current prices of $1.80 for motorcycle and light cars rise to $1.90 while the current $4.80 fee for heavy truck and bus will increase to $5.00. ITSNZ discusses micro mobility disruption Intelligent Transport Systems New Zealand (ITSNZ) held a presentation and panel discussion on February 19 in Auckland to discuss the disruption of micro mobility within urban and rural transport. New electric personal transport options under the micro mobility label include e-scooters, e-bikes, electric skateboards, Segways, electric mopeds and more. The rapid adoption, surpassing 500 million users globally, brought on by the fleets, and increasing private ownership, means decision-makers are under pressure to react quickly to understand the implications for public safety, regulation and infrastructure to achieve the full potential of benefits and mitigate problems. The event discussed how and why new mobility options will be a major disruptor and driver of behavioural change. Micro mobility conference founder and host of the micro mobility Podcast, Horace Dediu says the migration of people to cities since the 1950’s lead to blossoming urbanisation and he predicts that by 2050 6.7 billion people will be living in cities, and many will prefer a mode of personal transport but there won’t be the resources to cope with cars. Interestingly Dediu believes that car share services such as Uber and Lyft have already reached the point of peak use, but shared micro mobility options have barely scratched the surface yet. f5000 clean sweep for collins at skope classic They say that the first win is the hardest and that after it subsequent ones come more easily. That would certainly appear the case for SAS Autoparts MSC NZ F5000 Tasman Cup Revival Series driver Michael Collins (McRae GM1).

26

The 22-year-old from Christchurch claimed his first pole position at the third round of the 2018/19 series at Hampton Downs, but ended up again playing second fiddle in each race to the four-time category champion and early season pace-setter Ken Smith (Lola T332). On his home track, Mike Pero Motorsport Park, Ruapuna, Collins not only pipped Smith for pole position for a second time in as many meetings, he also managed to convert his qualifying pace into his first category race win on the Saturday, then second and third wins in the 8 and 12 lap races on the Sunday. In each race Collins and Smith were in a class of their own, sprinting away from the rest of the field and circulating within metres of each other from the rolling starts until the chequered flags came out. Meanwhile, series regular (and the man behind SAS Autoparts), David Banks, was presented with the Stan Redmond Memorial Trophy. This trophy is awarded annually at the Christchurch round of the SAS Autoparts MSC NZ F5000 Tasman Cup Revival Series, to the driver who best exhibits the characteristics of fraternity and good sportsmanship. Qualities the late Stan Redmond, one of the first local drivers to champion the revival of the Formula 5000 category, held dear. Source: nzmotorracing.co.nz

Subaru NZ gifts WRX STI to rally driver Ben Hunt Nelson’s Ben Hunt is now the official owner of the purpose-built Subaru WRX STI rally car. Subaru of New Zealand gifted ownership to him after three years in this production-based model. Subaru have been sponsoring Hunt since the end of 2013. In recognition of his rallying talents, he was taken on as a brand ambassador in 2015. The company offered him the use of a brand-new production model Subaru WRX STI, which he had converted to a rally car.

Stepping up to an All-Wheel Drive vehicle in 2013, Hunt purchased the ex-Emma Gilmour Subaru WRX and finished fourth in the NZRC. The next year he moved up to second overall. Source: nzmotorracing.co.nz

His Hunt Motorsports team, alongside Speedhub Motorsport, spent countless hours transforming the Subaru WRX STI into a rally-fit machine. Now, three years later as part of the agreement, Subaru is handing over its keys. Hunt will campaign the Subaru WRX STI in this year’s six-round NZRC, looking to repeat his 2015 win, which he achieved in an older model Subaru WRX. Hunt has an impressive rally career history, which was jump-started in 2009, when he won the inaugural Rally New Zealand Rising Stars scholarship. He followed that achievement up with two national 2WD titles and a junior championship trophy in 2011 and 2012.

World Champion for MotoFest The spectacular celebration of motorcycling at Hampton Downs on the 2nd and 3rd of March, known as the Mike Pero MotoFest, welcomes a special guest this year – World Champion Chris Vermeulen. A neighbour of returning Kiwi star Simon Crafar when they were both living in Andorra, Vermeulen enjoyed a decade-long world championship racing career. There are not too many international circuits in which the Australian has not turned a wheel. In his ten years in world championship racing he qualified on pole 11 times, took 15 race wins and 40 podiums, in his 155 world championship appearances. Along the way he clinched the World Supersport Championship in 2003 and became the first rider to win a MotoGP race for Suzuki. Nowadays Vermeulen lives at Maleny in the hinterland of Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, sharing a 50-acre property with his wife Toni and two daughters, a few horses, some cows and his off-road bikes. Over the past four years he has developed a television career as a MotoGP commentator for Fox Motorsport and just like Kiwi Simon Crafar, he found the switch from world championship racer to commentator rather difficult. Vermeulen is naturally very much looking forward to spending time with Crafar at the Mike Pero MotoFest and comparing notes. He will ride a British Superbike Championship Suzuki GSXR1000 at Hampton Downs. Source: nzmotorracing.co.nz
