MOTORSPORT NEWS Paddon will continue to represent the Hyundai brand with all his and the team’s motorsport endeavours, as he dives into some exciting and challenging projects - national and international - with the now six-strong Paddon Rallysport crew based in their new facility at Highlands Motorsport Park in Cromwell.
HYUNDAI NZ EXTENDS PARTNERSHIP WITH PADDON Kiwi rally star Hayden Paddon has confirmed a new contract with Hyundai New Zealand, with the New Zealand-owned company increasing their support of both Paddon personally and Paddon Rallysport as they undertake a swathe of new projects.
4 4
Paddon joins the new Global Rallycross series in Europe, the first round taking place in late June. Back in New Zealand, the team will convert the New Zealand-built Hyundai i20 AP4+ car into its 800bhp hillclimb spec to tackle the Ashley Forest Rallysprint in September, plus some other iconic local rallysprints. Other events, yet to be confirmed, but are on the radar are San Marino’s Rally Legend (October) and some events in Australia. Paddon says he continues to seek options to contest future World Rally Championship events in either a WRC or an R5-spec car. “While we would obviously still like to be in the WRC, that was a decision that was outside our control,” Paddon says. “The team at Hyundai New Zealand have been nothing but supportive and that’s something I will never turn my back on.” Paddon is making sure he’s ready to compete at the highest level, whenever he gets the opportunity. “Physical fitness and mental training, driving practice during our 2019 season and pace notes are all aspects of my sport that I continue to work on and improve, so if there is a chance to compete in WRC events, we will prove once and for all that we do belong there.” Source: nzmotorracing.co.nz

INDUSTRY NEWS
CLIMATE CHANGE BILL BEFORE PARLIAMENT Action on climate change is being taken with the Government introducing its zerocarbon bill to parliament. Reducing transport emissions and encouraging electric vehicles are implied rather than stated in an early announcement but are expected to be included in the detail. “To address the long-term challenge of climate change, today we introduce the Climate Change Response (Zero Carbon) Amendment Bill to parliament,” prime minister Jacinda Ardern says. “We’ve built a practical consensus across Government that creates a plan for the next 30 years, which provides the certainty industries need to get in front of this challenge.” Ardern and climate change minister James Shaw believes it will help answer the concerns of New Zealand students who went on strike in March to protest the lack of decisive action on climate change. “The critical thing is to do everything we can over the next 30 years to limit global warming to no more than 1.5 degrees Celsius and the Zero Carbon Bill makes that a legally binding objective. Carbon dioxide is the most important thing we need to tackle – that’s why we’ve taken a net zero carbon approach.” The Bill also sets a target for 10% reduction in biological methane emissions by 2030 and aims for a provisional reduction ranging from 24% to 47% by 2050. AUTOMOTIVE EMPLOYMENT NZ MAKE MAJOR CHANGES Intelligent Transport Systems New Zealand (ITSNZ) held a presentation and panel discussion on February 19 in Auckland to discuss the disruption of micro mobility within urban and rural transport. “We are particularly proud of the job board which has vastly improved features from the old site,” says Automotive Employment NZ managing director Russell Phillips. The job board allows candidates to track their applications, register with the site, upload resumes, register for job alerts and much more. “Our ‘list a job’ function is improved making it easier for employers to list vacancies and executives should also note we have advanced tips for preparing for management job interviews.” “We can’t wait for you all to experience our biggest leap forward yet in the conquest to provide the best motor industry recruitment services in New Zealand.” Source: autotalk.co.nz

MEMBER PROFILE
ENDEAVOUR MOTORS This month we caught up with Steve and Vanessa, the owners of Endeavour Motors in Auckland, who are also the grand prize winners of the 2018 Mercedes-Benz Triple Points Promotion.
Tell us a bit about your business We are located on the North Shore of Auckland, known locally for our friendly and efficient service. The business specialises in servicing and auto repairs for European made cars. We have a trustworthy team of experts, all industry certified mechanics, led by Steve who has had over 30 years’ experience working with different European makes and models. Tell us what sets Endeavour Motors apart from other workshops? We continue to strive to find new ways to reduce our general waste, where many tyre shops still cut the sidewalls out of old tyres and dispose of them with general waste, which ends up in landfill, we use – J & J Laughton Shredding. They provide an environmentally responsible disposal method.
be crush and recycled. As well as oils, which can be recycled and most plastics. We take the extra time and cost of reducing our waste wherever possible. At the end of each week we have created less than a single wheelie bin of rubbish that cannot be recycled – that’s less than 240 litres. Why do you use genuine parts? We use genuine parts for best quality, correct fit and availability. What have you redeemed with your points? We recently ordered a Williams Warn Brew Kit. Vanessa says her first brew is done, and Steve admits it’s really good. Next up is a cider!
Recycling is key too and we recycle everything we can, including paper, batteries, filters - which can

MOTORSPORT NEWS
GRAY STEPS UP TO CO-DRIVE FOR PADDON Co-driver Samantha Gray, impressed enough, sitting alongside former WRC star Hayden Paddon, that she may have earned another drive with the Hyundai operation. Gray, who usually co-drives for Regan Ross in the historic 2WD class, got a one-off opportunity to co-drive for Paddon at the International Rally of Whangarei in the Hyundai New Zealand i20 AP4+. The pair dominated the event to take overall honours, but Gray was left nearly speechless with the speed that Paddon drives at. “It was unbelievable how fast that car can go,” Gray said. “It is next level of New Zealand car and I just can’t believe how fast it is. Words can’t describe it. It is going to be hard going back – I definitely learned heaps and I can’t thank Hyundai New Zealand, Hayden, Pinnacle and everyone that has helped me get to this point,” Gray added. Paddon acknowledged how well Gray performed in her one-off opportunity. “She did a phenomenal job, it was obviously a difficult start on the Saturday morning with the fog and pretty technical stages and she adjusted quite quickly,” Paddon said. And she has a chance of joining Paddon for a second Brian Green Property Group New Zealand Rally Championship
event again in 2019. Paddon is confirmed to compete at Rally South Canterbury in late June and will almost certainly need another young co-driver. Source: nzmotorracing.co.nz
MUSTANG CLAIMS TITLE OF BEST-SELLING SPORTS COUPE IN THE WORLD FOR FOURTH STRAIGHT YEAR
Ford celebrated Mustang’s 55th anniversary in April with National Mustang Day. From New Zealand to Peru, Mustang reigns as the best-selling sports coupe in the world for 2018, selling 113,066 cars, according to data from IHS Markit. 2018 not only marks the fourth straight year of Mustang’s global leadership as world’s bestselling sports coupe, but also as best-selling sports car in the United States, where Ford sold 75,842 Mustangs last year. “We broke the mould when Ford launched the Mustang 55 years ago,” said Jim Farley, Ford president, global markets. “Nothing says freedom, the wind in your hair and the joy of driving like Mustang; it’s an icon. The roar of its V8 on a spring day, there’s nothing better. No wonder it’s the most popular sports coupe in the world.” Mustang was available for purchase in 146 countries in 2018, based on worldwide Ford sales data. More than 500,000 sixth-generation Mustangs have been sold worldwide since 2015, with the pony picking up an additional half point of global share last year to capture 15.4 percent of the segment. This was fuelled in part by the new Mustang Bullitt, which exceeded global sales forecasts by 25 percent. Global sales data are based on IHS Markit 2018 total new vehicle registrations for all sports car segments. U.S. sales are based on 2018 industry reported sales.

DRIVING THE DREAM Brendon Leitch’s career to date is one which most young car enthusiasts dream of. The 22-year-old New Zealand race car driver grew up racing go karts alongside elder brother Damon, where his natural talent for driving became apparent. From first contesting the New Zealand Formula Ford Championship in 2007 to pushing for championship honours at the 2019 Castrol Toyota Racing Series, Invercargill-based Brendon is quickly becoming a household name in the industry with aspirations of one day driving the Indy circuit like his childhood hero Scott Dixon.
With his racing a priority, Brendon is still finding time to complete a New Zealand Certificate in Light Automotive Engineering through MITO – something he sees as an incredibly valuable tool to assist his racing career. How are you managing to balance your MITO apprenticeship with your racing? It isn’t easy but I just try to find a balance that works around my racing. It’s really awesome that the theory aspect of MITO’s training programme is online which means I can complete my work if I’m away racing for a week, or even overseas. When I’m at home, I spend 30 minutes a night four to five days a week and just concentrate on being as time-efficient as possible. I’m really committed to becoming qualified and am only 6 months away from completing my training programme. Did you always know the automotive industry was where you wanted to work? You could say my entry into the industry was pre-ordained, growing up around my Dad. He’s been building and restoring cars for 35 years now, and since I was a kid I always had my own project cars to work on in the workshop. I’ve always found the work fascinating – particularly the performance and fabrication. You have an engine in front of you and you have to strip it down to find some more horsepower, whether that’s boring out the cylinders or changing the shapes of the inward exhaust ports. Or even rebuilding the cars I’m racing. I rebuilt the car I raced in the Formula 4 three times from the ground up - from cutting a new stainless floor to rebuilding the gearbox and everything in between. I love the hands-on aspect.
18
With racing the main focus of your career, why did you decide to gain a qualification? For me, a qualification is very important for my racing career and profession. It’s such a valuable tool to have and learn what the car is doing underneath you. Then, if something goes wrong while you’re racing, you can come straight back and report what the issue is to the engineer. It’s just another thing that makes you more valuable to an overseas racing team. Plus, at the end of the day, if racing didn’t work out for me, there’s always the possibility of working for a Formula 1 team as a technician which is something I think would be really cool. There’s no doubt that getting qualified through MITO is hugely beneficial and fantastic to have – it really can take you anywhere. Do you have any advice for young automotive technicians or aspirational racing car drivers? There is a lot to be said for finding something that you are passionate about and being able to turn that into a rewarding career. Whether it’s racing or becoming a technician,
"IF YOU’RE WILLING TO WORK HARD AND COMMIT TO IT, YOU’LL SUCCEED AND WAKE UP EVERY MORNING HAPPY TO GO TO WORK AND LOVING WHAT YOU DO." I think about that all the time – the day I stop loving what I do is the day I’ll stop doing it. But I still love it - nothing has changed since I was a little kid!
To accelerate your career with a nationally recognised qualification through MITO, call 0800 88 21 21 or visit mito.org.nz

EXPLOSIVE NEW AUTOBIOGRAPHY FROM PADDON Penguin Random House NZ is excited to announce the August release of Driven, the explosive autobiography from New Zealand’s most successful rally driver, Hayden Paddon.
The book will cover Paddon’s commitment to racing from a very young age, his many highs and lows on the local and international circuits. Along with his latest Paddon Rallysport initiative out of its base at Highlands Motorsport Park in Cromwell. Driven will provide rare insights into Paddon’s formative years growing up in Geraldine, his entry into competitive racing, success locally and ascendency on the international circuit. The 2017 accident in which a spectator was killed, his controversial axing from the Hyundai Motorsport team in 2018, and how he is regearing his career and maintaining a future focus. Paddon will also offer unvarnished reflections on the highs and lows of his personal life. Marking the first time Paddon has gone on public record about much of the above, Driven will chart a life story that celebrates self-belief, determination, work ethic and thinking big following one’s passion and turning dreams into a reality. Paddon will undertake a nationwide tour to promote Driven on release. Source: nzmotorracing.co.nz

MCLAUGHLIN REWARDS FANS Supercars champion Scott McLaughlin was kept busy signing autographs and engaging with the thousands of motorsport fans, who descended on KartSport Hamilton’s Porter Group Raceway to watch the 25-year-old return to his racing roots at the Porter Group KartSport NZ National Sprint Championship meeting over the Easter weekend. It was the biggest crowd executives of the club and of the sport’s governing body, KartSport New Zealand, could remember at the club’s track. McLaughlin - who is Patron of both the club and the national body - made the trip ‘home’ worthwhile with a podium finish (2nd) in the 125cc Rotax Max Heavy class. It’s not every day, obviously, that a driver of the calibre and profile of McLaughlin returns to where it all started. But after flying over to watch the annual championship meeting at Rotorua last Easter, the Shell V-Power Ford Mustang driver said that there and then he decided he would try and put together a deal to actually drive at the 2019 meeting. “It was awesome just to be racing,” he said as he was surrounded by well-wishers after finishing second to top Kiwi karter Ryan Urban in the 22-lap 125cc Rotax Max Heavy class final on the Sunday. “It’s always hard being at a race meeting and not racing, so it was great this year to be both a guest -as the Patron - and a driver.” McLaughlin quickly proved that he had not lost any of the skills behind the wheel of a kart either, qualifying second quickest in class on the Friday, and after never finishing lower than 4th across the three heats and pre-final, grabbed second place off the start in the final and held the position to the chequered flag. MICHELS BUZZING AFTER TRS TEST "I AM GRATEFUL TO
TOYOTA NEW ZEALAND AND THE KIWI DRIVER FUND FOR THE OPPORTUNITY"
NZ F1600 Champion, Jordan Michels of Invercargill, says he is still “pretty buzzed” after a test in a Toyota Racing Series car at Hampton Downs Motorsport Park in North Waikato in May. Michels did 75 laps in the TRS car and afterwards described the Tatuus FT-50 as “unreal, I’ve never driven anything like it before. It is a very rewarding car and the corner speed and torque is a big step up from FF1600. It was so much fun, and the limit is hard to find.” “We were quick enough, but we took a sensible approach, it was a new track and a new car and I had to learn to left foot brake again. When you are focusing on one thing at a time 75 laps is not a lot.” The Toyota Racing Series is the premier single seater motor race series in the country and the test came after Michels won the New Zealand Formula 1600 Championship in early March. Source: nzmotorracing.co.nz
Said Michels on his return home after the test. “Toyota put on a really good show. My name was on the car and they sell the series very well.”

ROD WOOD COLLISION REPAIR CENTRE This month we caught up with Simon Hussey of Rod Wood Collision Repair Centre. They are one of Hamilton’s leading collision repair specialists, specialising in fleet repairs and are fully equipped to handle all types of modern vehicle repairs. Tell us a bit about yourself and the business.
Why genuine parts?
After the Christchurch earthquakes, with a young family, we decided to relocate to Auckland.
Genuine parts give us peace of mind that we are taking the vehicle back to manufacturers standard.
I've always been driven to own my own business from the days back in Christchurch managing my family’s collision repair shop. By sheer luck and good fortune we started talking to Rod Wood. Rod Wood Panel and Radiator Repairs had already been operating for over 30 years and had a very good name. We purchased the business in 2016 and we continue to be one of Hamilton's industry leaders for collision repair.
You know a genuine part is going to fit first time. It's always great to deal with local dealerships for parts, we have a great relationship and rapport with these guys and get excellent service.
What sets you apart from your competitors? Having employees with a great attitude and on board with our way of doing business has really helped translate our vision into a reality. We support this by investing in enhanced technology, regular training and upskilling for our professional technicians and also training apprentices. We’re consistently working on having advance production processes and procedures and believe that communication is key to keeping clients happy.
What do you think about the GetGenuine programme? The points are great! We can get whatever we want, and it’s a great way for the local dealerships we support to show that they value our business. I’ve mostly spent points on household things – washing machines, dryers, fridges etc.
2018 MERCEDES-BENZ TRIPLE POINTS PROMOTION Congratulations to Simon, who was one of the monthly winners in the 2018 Mercedes-Benz Triple Points Promotion, taking home a Mercedes-AMG Merchandise Pack valued at $1,000.

ROAD SAFETY DEBATE MUST INCLUDE DRUG-DRIVING, RTF SAYS A Parliament debate on road safety which led to National MP Nick Smith being suspended from the House was “disappointing to see”, the Road Transport Forum says.
LAND ROVER LAUNCHES ‘ASTRONAUT EDITION’ MODEL A special edition Range Rover will only be available to members of the Virgin Galactic Future Astronaut community. Land Rover’s astronaut edition celebrates Virgin Galactic’s unique community of future astronauts and marks a milestone in the ongoing partnership between Land Rover and Virgin Galactic. A zero-gravity blue finish is inspired by the night sky, the puddle lamp illumination design features the silhouette of Virgin Galactic’s SpaceshipTwo, and the astronaut edition badging features on the tailgate and side profile finishers. “Land Rover vehicles have been part of daily life for the Virgin Galactic team since the launch of the partnership win 2014,” says Land Rover chief design officer Gerry McGovern. “The astronaut edition Range Rover is the next step on this journey and the chance for the future astronaut community to celebrate our two brands’ shared values of pioneering spirit and true sense of adventure. This vehicle really will take them above and beyond.”
Smith was handed a 24-hour lockout from Parliament by Speaker Trevor Mallard for “grossly disorderly conduct”, interjecting during a point of order that police minister Stuart Nash misled the House during the debate on May 8. “It was particularly concerning that the mother of a young man killed by a drug-driver had to witness that on a day she was presenting a petition to Parliament seeking random road-side drug testing,” RTF chairman Nick Leggett says. “On one hand this Government is saying it is committed to road safety and on the other, the police minister appears to be backing down on the issue of roadside drug testing, as seen in Parliament yesterday.” The Road Transport Forum Board has a drug and alcohol policy for the industry with states zero tolerance of any use of illegal drugs and no alcohol consumption before starting duty and only moderate consumption 12 hours beforehand, Leggett says. “Roadside drug testing was finally adopted in 2010, but forum members want the Government to toughen its drug testing policy by introducing random testing, as for alcohol, and bringing in more scientific methods such as saliva or blood testing. Saliva testing has been successful in other countries such as Australia, the UK and Canada. Source: autotalk.co.nz

AUSSIE REEVES LOVES THE KIWI ROADS He may be from Victoria, Australia, but rally driver Brendan Reeves loves competing in New Zealand. He has been coming to New Zealand since 2008, when he competed in both the Rally Whangarei and Rally New Zealand in a Ford Fiesta. While electrical problems thwarted his Whangarei debut, he finished first in the K2 class and 25th overall in Rally New Zealand. The following two years he finished third overall (2009 and 2010) at Whangarei driving a Subaru WRX STI. It wasn't until 2016 that Reeves returned to New Zealand to compete at Coromandel with current co-driver Rhianon Gelsomino, this time driving a new Andrew Hawkeswood built Mazda2 AP4 car. A year later they were to take the outright win in the 2017 Mahindra Gold Rush Rally of Coromandel. Both in 2016 and 2017 Reeves worked closely with Hayden Paddon's WRC campaign, at Hyundai Motorsport, as part of his gravel crew. For 2018 they competed in both the Rally of South Canterbury (eighth overall) and Rally Coromandel (fifth overall), again in Hawkeswood's Mazda2 AP4. This season will see him compete in five of the six New Zealand Rally Championship rounds, with Stokes Motorsport driving a brand-new Ford Fiesta AP4 car. Unfortunately, Reeves and Gelsomino retired out of the first day at Rally Otago on the penultimate stage with an alternator problem. They had already won three of the six stages in the New Zealand Rally Championship category before retiring, but returned for Day 2 winning a further two stages. Brian Stokes and the Stokes Motorsport team has a proud rallying history, particularly with Ford and it is their home event so we can expect a top effort from all involved in the team. SPEED WORKS 2019-2020 CALENDAR Speed Works Events has released its provisional 20192020 MotorSport NZ Championship calendar and the big news is the potential return of international single seaters to arguably the country’s most iconic race track. The Castrol Toyota Racing Series, which will once again run its five back-to-back rounds within the Speed Works calendar, will hold its New Zealand Motor Cup meeting over the weekend of 7 – 9 February 2020 and that could be at Pukekohe Park. The meeting venue that weekend is currently a TBC, but will definitely be either at Pukekohe Park or at the Bruce McLaren Motorsport Park, Taupo. Notable also on the list of provisional dates is a return to Invercargill and Teretonga, where Speed Works is also working with local council and ILT on a major fan-focussed initiative.
THE PROVISIONAL SPEED WORKS CALENDAR: 29 November – 1 December 2019, Pukekohe 17-19 January 2020, Highlands 24-26 January 2020, Teretonga 31 January – 2 February 2020, Hampton Downs 7-9 February 2020, Pukekohe/Taupo TBC 14-16 February 2020, Manfeild 13-15 March 2020, Hampton Downs
The calendar of events will feature all of New Zealand’s major racing categories and will also be the home for the new TCR New Zealand saloon championship, scheduled to kick off at the Highlands round of the calendar in January. Categories almost certain to run on the dates will include BNT V8s, the Toyota 86 Championship, ENZED Central Muscle Cars, Porsche series, TradeZone GTRNZ, NEXEN Tyre Pro 7 Mazda Racing, Hi-Q Components Formula First and V8 Utes as well as the new TCR championship and Castrol TRS. HARTLEY TAKES OVER ALONSO’S SEAT AT TOYOTA Two-time Formula 1 world champion Fernando Alonso will pursue new motorsport challenges following the 2019 Le Mans 24 Hours, handing over his place in the TOYOTA GAZOO Racing team in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) to Brendon Hartley. New Zealander Brendon Hartley is a two-time WEC champion and 2017 Le Mans 24 Hours winner during four seasons with Porsche prior to a stint in Formula 1. “A big thanks to TOYOTA GAZOO Racing for giving me this opportunity,” commented Hartley. “I know how professional and motivated this team is following my years competing against them in WEC, so I am fired up and am very happy to be joining them. Hartley will join Mike Conway, Kamui Kobayashi, José María López, Sébastien and Kazuki as a race driver for TOYOTA GAZOO Racing in WEC next season, which begins on 1 September at Silverstone and concludes on 14 June 2020 at Le Mans. The driver line-up of each TS050 HYBRID will be confirmed later. Source: nzmotorracing.co.nz
