We caught up with Marcus, from Goodhue Automotive in Hamilton, who was the lucky winner of the 2019 GetGenuine winter promotion and has won a trip to Queenstown, worth $2,000!

Tell us about yourself and your business? Goodhue Automotive has been family owned for over 25 years, having been started by my parents in 1992. I purchased the business from them in 2012, with a goal to offer exceptional value and service to our customers. Tell us what sets Goodhue Automotive apart from other workshops? Our extensive knowledge and focus on training – all our staff are highly trained and are committed to continuous learning, attending diagnostic courses and further training. We have also invested into high-tech equipment and use the best tools for the job. Something else which sets us apart, is that we are passionate about about the environment and our impact on it. As a result, we have made the decision to move to EV courtesy cars. Why do you use genuine parts? We have a strong preference for genuine parts and

use them for their quality and reliability. Genuine parts are also supported with better warranties, which the manufacturer always honors. Also, they come in cheaper than aftermarket parts a lot of the time, so it's an obvious choice for us. What do you think of the GetGenuine programme? It's great to see my points accumulate over the year from multiple suppliers. We usually use them at Christmas time on gifts for the family, or for staff rewards. What have you redeemed with your points? We recently redeemed a coffee machine for the staff room, the staff love it. Have you had a chance to think about your prize? It's awesome! My wife and I are planning to pay a bit extra so we can take the kids and stay an extra day or two to maximise the opportunity.

Lauren Jervis from GetGenuine (pictured right), congratulating Marcus of Goodhue Automotive

MEMBER PROFILE

LAKE STREET AUTO SERVICES LTD We spoke to Richard Jervis from Lake St Auto's, based in Cambridge, about his motor career, spanning 40 years. Along with why genuine parts are always front-of-mind when servicing vehicles.

Tell us about yourself and your business?

Why do you use genuine parts?

I started my career in the motor trade over 40 years ago. My first job was at a prestigious garage selling Porsche, Mercedes, Jensen Interceptor and Audi. This drove my passion for the industry which would later see me own my own garage in the south of England.

We use genuine parts because they are a direct replacement. We save time installing genuine parts, as there are no modifications required to make them fit, as is often required with aftermarket options. In the long run it’s much cheaper to keep a vehicle regularly maintained and serviced with quality parts - it pays back time and time again.

I emigrated from the UK with my family ten years ago and soon found myself wanting to get back into the motor trade. I purchased Lake St Auto's in early 2012, with a strong focus on customer service, quality of work and value for money. The business was originally founded over 30 years ago, it has always had a strong name and reputation around town. Tell us what sets Lake St Auto's apart from other workshops? We pride ourselves on our customer service. We are now seeing the next generation of customers coming back in to have their vehicles serviced, it’s great to see multiple generations returning to the business.

We can also have peace of mind knowing our customers can safely spend more time on the road, having received the highest quality parts, value for money and service.

"WE SAVE TIME INSTALLING GENUINE PARTS, AS THERE ARE NO MODIFICATIONS REQUIRED TO MAKE THEM FIT " What have you redeemed with your points? I’m passionate about cooking, so my latest redemptions have been a pressure cooker and a casserole dish!

INDUSTRY NEWS

LARGEST ROUND OF EV RELATED FUNDING ANNOUNCED Electric trucks and EV charging are among 29 projects worth a combined $16.5 million to benefit from the sixth round of the Government’s low emission vehicles contestable fund.

It’s the largest boost so far, according to energy and resources minister Megan Woods, announcing on August 15 the successful applicants at Blackwell Motors in Christchurch, which has received co-funding to purchase and trial an electric truck to loan to its clients. “These grants will include $4.5 million of Government funding, matched by $12 million from the private sector,” Woods says, adding that round seven applications opened on August 16. “Smart investments like this are why under this Government the number of electric vehicles on our roads has nearly tripled. In October 2017, we had 5,363 registered EVs compared to 15,453 now. “With transport making up 19% of our emissions, this is a key part of our plan to tackle climate change.” The latest fund focus is to continue to improve public EV charging infrastructure, increase use of electric heavy vehicles, and invest in innovative technology such as smart charging.

“We want to make it easier than ever for New Zealanders to get around in low emissions vehicles,” Woods says. In total, the fund has committed $20.9 million in government funding to 120 projects, matched by $40.7 million applicant funding. A further $3.1 million in government funding is available under this round. Starting in round eight, opening in February 2020, the investment focus will also include support for publicly available secure electric bike storage facilities.

Successful sixth round project applicants include: •

KiwiRail for EV charger installation on three Interislander ferries for passengers to use in-transit.

Dempsey Wood Civil and KAM Transport to purchase and trial the integration of electric trucks into their businesses.

Kiwi Property to install 42 public EV chargers at popular shopping malls in Auckland and Hamilton (Sylvia Park, The Base, Centre Place)

Holiday Parks to provide 30 public double EV chargers (two cars can charge at a time) at its camping grounds throughout New Zealand.

ChargeNet NZ to install New Zealand’s first high power charging hub at Bombay to deliver up to 350kW per vehicle for a maximum four vehicles at once.

TOYOTA FT-60 TESTED IN ITALY TOYOTA GAZOO - Racing New Zealand’s new Toyota FT-60, hit the track for the first time in August running at three Italian circuits – Vairano, Cremona and Franciacorta.

Driven by experienced RLR Motorsport LMP2 racer, Arjun Maini, who drove the previous Toyota FT-50 to fourth in the all New Zealand Castrol Toyota Racing Series in 2015. The Hankook-tyred car completed more than 900km over three days, testing at the three tracks. The tests were overseen by both Toyota and Tatuus engineers. The 2020 car uses the same chassis as that in other global junior formulae, however, is powered by a brand new two-litre 285 horsepower (212 kW) engine based on the 8AR FTS engine, used in both Toyota and Lexus models. This has been developed into a full race engine by the same NZ engineers that were involved in the development and maintenance of the previous 1.8L engine used for the FT-40 and FT-50. New Zealand testing of the car has just begun, having kicked off at the end of August, ahead of the 2020 season which begins in January. Source: nzmotorracing.co.nz

MICHELS IMPORTS HONDA FOR TCR NZ SERIES Current NZ Formula Ford title holder, Jordan Michels, is confirmed as one of the first drivers for the 2020 TCR New Zealand Championship, driving a Honda Civic Type R. The 20 year-old will compete for team Williams Racing, after the car was purchased by Peter Williams. Michels got the opportunity to sample a Honda TCR car at Queensland Raceway in mid-August and said that TCR New Zealand is the logical next step in his career.

“I think everyone is excited by it. The same formula in so many countries across the world – that alone is exciting,” he said.

“It’s what New Zealand needs at the moment – a category exactly the same as one that is being run in Australia. It’s the most talked about thing in New Zealand at the moment. There’s TCR and there’s Scott McLaughlin … that’s all NZ fans talk about!” Source: nzmotorracing.co.nz

THOMAS PREVAILS IN CATLINS COAST RALLY Garet and Gemma Thomas of Darfield won the Catlin’s Coast Rally in a dramatic finish. The husband and wife team only took the lead in the final stage, in a Subaru WRX Sti. The duo had cause for double celebration as their victory also gave them the Mainland Rally Series drivers and co-drivers titles respectively. Defending champion and four-time winner, Andrew Graves of Gore, won the opening four Special Stages and held a comfortable lead of over three minutes when he lost a wheel and went off the road, on the penultimate stage handing the lead to Deane Buist, of Christchurch in his Volkswagen Golf GTi MK2. Buist headed to the final stage, twenty-five seconds ahead of Carter Strang, in his EVO 6 with Thomas third, thirty-three seconds off the lead. Both Buist and Strang suffered problems in the final stage, leaving Thomas to come home and take an unexpected win, to secure the Darryl Robinson Memorial Trophy. Job Quantock of Kaiapoi came in second, with Malcolm Read in a Mitsubishi Lancer EVO 8 seventeen seconds behind. Third was three-time winner Dean Bond of Balclutha in his EVO 6.5, despite several problems throughout the day. Source: nzmotorracing.co.nz

HARTLEY PICKS UP FORMULA E DRIVE Former Formula One driver and two-time World Endurance Car Champion, Brendon Hartley, has signed with the all-American team Geox Dragon racing, as the first of its two drivers for the 2019/20 season. Hartley is the only driver to be officially announced by the team for the 2019/20 season, with a second driver yet to be decided. He will contend the FE series alongside his World Endurance Championship drive with the Toyota GAZOO Racing LMP1 team.

“I’m happy to be taking on a new challenge in Formula E together with Geox Dragon racing.” “Formula E is totally different from any other race series I’ve been in, but I am hoping my experience in many categories with energy management will pay dividends and give me a head start as a rookie.” said the Kiwi driver. “I’ve always been a fan of street tracks and Formula E has some of the wildest I’ve seen. That, together with some of the best drivers and manufacturers in the world makes it an exciting place to be. In one of the most challenging seasons in the history of the all-electric race series, the Dragon outfit finished 10th in the teams’ standings with 44 points, with neither frontman Jose-Maria Lopez or rookie Maximilian Gunther making it onto the podium. Paintsmart Group, for all your Panel & Paint needs... and so much more Earn GetGenuine points for every dollar you spend with participating Paintsmart distributors. In 2014 a group of like-minded independent distributors got together and formed the Paintsmart Group. This group of distributors at the time had one common key brand, DeBeer Refinish, which has continued to be the cornerstone paint brand of the members of the group. Forming the group enabled larger volume purchasing and also to develop relationships with key local and global suppliers to market in New Zealand. The group has obtained a number of key brands and looks to further develop this to be able to offer the market quality ‘value for money’ products. In 2015 the group started an exclusive supply agreement with the Finixa brand which is a range of non-paint products (consumables and equipment) from Belgium. Paintsmart Group members have quickly established Finixa as a recognised quality product range in New Zealand. As a result of solid

growth and developing contacts globally, Paintsmart Group has obtained access to key brands such as Anest Iwata, a globally recognised spray gun and equipment manufacturer. 3D Car Care range is also being marketed by Paintsmart Group, 3D an industry leader in the manufacturing of the highest quality car care and grooming products. Paintsmart Group continues to market key industry leading brands such as 3M, POR products, DNA custom paints, Valspar Refinish, Valspar Industrial Mix, and many other quality brands and products. The members of the group have worked with Smart Loyalty for many years and provide loyalty rewards through SmartTrade and GetGenuine programmes. Our Paintsmart Group members would be more than happy to discuss your product and service requirements, so give your local member a call.

CAREER IN CARS AN OBVIOUS CHOICE 18-year-old Josh Cooper spends his days working as an apprentice automotive technician at Automotive Solutions Limited, Invercargill. In his spare time, he works on his own cars – currently in the middle of an engine rebuild and races competitively around Teretonga Park. To put it simply – Josh is car-mad.

Listening to Josh talk about the rest of his family members, it’s easy to see where his passion stems from. “My Dad was into cars, and my Grandad too” he says. “I did a lot of buying and selling of cars for a while and my Grandad would always help me out with that. He taught me heaps.” Growing up surrounded by cars and mechanics, a career in the industry was an obvious choice for Josh, who says he never really considered anything else. “I’ve always tinkered around with cars at home, and loved it. In high school I knew that I wanted to get into the industry, as soon as I left – I was set on it.” Josh’s natural ability was evident as soon as he began his studies, he was named top student in the light vehicle engineering course and top overall in automotive during his pre-trade course. Now completing the New Zealand Certificate in Light Automotive Engineering (Level 3 and 4) through MITO, Josh is loving getting stuck into his training programme. “The eLearning is awesome,” he says “It’s quick and easy to use, and really nice to learn on.” In the workshop, it’s the problem-solving parts of his job that Josh enjoys the most. “Diagnostics is definitely my favourite.”

"I T’S REALLY SATISFYING – THE

PROCESS OF FINDING A FAULT, DIAGNOSING IT, AND THEN FIXING IT"

With Josh’s passion for the industry evident, it’s not surprising that he was the recipient of a 2019 MITO Kick Start scholarship, which pays the first year fees for any MITO apprenticeship or traineeship programme at Level 4 or above. “The scholarship takes the financial pressure off both myself and my employer, so I was stoked when I found out I’d been selected as a recipient,” says Josh. Automotive Solutions Limited owner Blair Cooper describes Josh’s scholarship success as “fantastic” and “well deserved.” “He’s a really good employee,” he says. “He’s tidy, well spoken, and very methodical with the process of working through his jobs. We’re really happy for him.” As a business owner, Blair really sees the value in taking on apprentices, and how important it is to grow your own. “I’m a strong believer in the fact that if we don’t keep bringing young talent into the trade, we’re going to stay in the same position that the country’s in now – with a real lack of qualified staff. Industry can’t grow if we don’t take these young guys on.” Josh’s advice for young people wanting to get into the automotive industry? “You’ve got to get into it and give it a go,” he encourages. “Ask around at your local workshops if you can do some work experience after school. It’s the best way to see if you like it.” For Josh, there’s no doubt in his mind that he’ll be in this industry for life – whether that’s on the tools or managing his own workshop. “I love it,” he says, “I never imagined doing anything else.”

The 2020 MITO scholarship programme opens 6 September 2019. To start your success story visit mito.nz/scholarships and apply today.

Tell us about the history of your business? Waggs Holden has been servicing the Wairarapa for over 125 years, first established in 1891, by Thomas Wagg. We hold an annual family day, where we get to give back to the community, inviting locals to enjoy a sausage sizzle and a drink. As well as facepainting, colouring-in competitions and games for the kids. There are numerous prizes up for grabs on the day, along with an old car display and much more! Why genuine parts?
