2019 TRIPLE POINTS

PROMOTION MONTH ONE WINNER In this edition of the Genuine Article we feature Chris Lloyd from Dr Diesel Ltd in Auckland, who won 100,000 GetGenuine points, in month one of the Ford Triple Points Promotion.

Tell us about yourself and your business? Established in 1994, we are a one-stop auto mechanical workshop based in Auckland. With a fully equipped modern workshop, we perform all petrol and diesel mechanical services on vehicles. We have a team of five fully trained and dedicated technicians, all with an eye for detail and always taking pride in their work. Plus, a mobile mechanic who has a great reputation with our clients and within the industry. We also have a tyre machine and scanning diagnostic machines, in addition to an AutoData computer program. 24 years ago, there was a demand from businesses that needed diesel repairs on small trucks, so this has become one of our specialties. Why do you use genuine parts? It’s a no-brainer for us. They’re better quality and they’re a right fit for the vehicle.

With aftermarket parts, you just don’t know what you’re going to get. One time, I purchased aftermarket bearings, marketed as a quality product. They turned out to be Chinese copies and almost cost us a timing belt. Had that gone, it would have caused $2,000+ worth of damage for a price saving of just $2.50 on the bearings! Using cheaper parts is not worth losing a customer, or the time it takes to do the job again with the right parts. What is your secret to success? Communication is the key! We’re always communicating with our clients and make sure we are available when they need us. Communicating with staff is also crucial. Surround yourself with good specialists, to ensure that any job can be completed to a high standard. Our mechanics have a variety of experience and training, so can cover most jobs, but we’re also not afraid to call on a wider repair network for help with specialist repairs if we need to. What do you plan to do with your points? As well as being kept busy with the business, my wife Joss and I hold two national titles in ballroom dancing. We have another national competition coming up, so after that, we plan to use our points on a trip to Fiji for some well-needed R&R!

"I’m just happy to be the guy to repay them for that" - Nick Cassidy

CASSIDY WINS SUPER FORMULA SERIES TITLE Kiwi driver Nick Cassidy has won the 2019 Super Formula Series title, after finishing second in the final race at Suzuka in Japan.

“That was so, so tough,” commented Cassidy. “I don’t know what to say. My team are amazing. I’ve won every championship now with TOM’S in Japan. That doesn’t say everything about me, that says everything about them. “They are a great group of people, they are like my family. I’m just happy to be the guy to repay them for that. It’s so difficult. Emotionally, it’s very up and down. There are so many drivers in this championship that it’s hard to be the top all the time.” “It’s about the days that you’re not at the top” he adds. “When we were not fast, we got a good result and when we were fast, we could make the result.” Having qualified sixth, Cassidy passed Koudai Tsukakoshi, Nirei Fukuzumi and chief rival Yamamoto to move up to third in the opening laps of the race. He then spent the remainder of the race shadowing Mugen driver Tomoki Nojiri, who secured his first series victory in five years. Second place gave Cassidy enough points to claim his first Super Formula crown. Source: talkmotorsport.co.nz

INDUSTRY NEWS

SKILLS FUND TO UPSKILL AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY Over $2.27 million will be invested to promote skills, training and employment in disadvantaged areas of Tairawhiti, targeting road transport and driving.

NEW VIRTUAL REALITY TECH FOR AUTOMOTIVE FIREFIGHTERS A new virtual reality training to help fight vehicle fires will benefit Kiwi firefighters and other first responders. Tough automotive fire scenarios will be reproduced by the new training technology to help prepare firefighters, taking over from traditional training methods. The FLAIM system incorporates an industrystandard hose-line system and protective clothing which produces a realistic heat simulation, in addition to a VR headset and breathing apparatus. Dangerous automotive fires include vehicles on fire on a motorway, a fire at a petrol station or in a residential garage.

The investment by Provincial Growth Fund (PGF) was announced by regional economic development minister Shane Jones and employment minister Willie Jackson in October. “This funding from the PGF’s Te Ara Mahi and He Poutama Rangatahi allocations means getting more people workready through the support of locally-led initiatives. We know this is essential for our regions to thrive and grow, which is a key priority for this Coalition Government,” Jones says. The Tairawhiti Road Transport recruitment and training project will receive $999,000 and GDL2mahi, the rural education activities programme, gets $697,000. “The funding announced for Tairawhiti Road Transport recruitment and training project will attract and upskill almost 80 truck drivers for local industries including road freight transport, forestry and agriculture,” Jones continues. “Run by Tairawhiti REAP, this funding will scale-up an existing programme and train 300 people in rural Tairawhiti over the next two years for restricted, defensive driving and full licences, meanwhile helping people find work.” The Poutama Rangatahi is funding $425,000 towards a pathway to trades programme. “Rangatahi pathways to trades will receive $425,000 to expand the programme’s support of local rangatahi aged 20-24, to help more into industry-based apprenticeships, employment and further training,” Jackson added. Source: autotalk.co.nz

Building and Fire Services managing director Mike Lindsay says the technology allows firefighters to experience a circumstance that would have otherwise be too dangerous or expensive to replicate. “The costs of building training scenarios for fire and emergency services can become expensive in both financial and environmental terms,” Lindsay says. “This virtual reality system was designed to accommodate the increasing need for training of new firefighters and has been adopted by firefighters in 15 countries around the world.” The new technology was developed by associate professor James Mullins at Deakin University’s Institute for Intelligent Systems Research and Innovation in Victoria, Australia. Mullins is a volunteer firefighter who wanted to find an alternative way to train other volunteers, as a real bushfire may be too overwhelming for a beginner firefighter. Source: autotalk.co.nz

TIMO PROVES THAT HARD WORK PAYS OFF 43-year-old Timo Leatau began his time at NZ Bus working as a cleaner, after previously spending fifteen years working as a light vehicle mechanic. However, it wasn’t long before his passion for mechanics enticed him back, and he asked his manager about the possibility of starting a heavy vehicle apprenticeship.

Timo admits that he was hesitant about approaching his manager. “I did hesitate a little because of my age,” he says. “I was also worried that I wasn’t smart enough, and that I would struggle with the work.”

Wayne West-Barron, Senior Fleet Supervisor at NZ Bus, can’t speak highly enough of Timo. “He’s been one of the most outstanding apprentices we’ve had through the business, no doubt about it.”

Less than two years later, and Timo has completed his National Certificate in Motor Industry (Automotive Heavy Engineering) with strand in Road Transport (Level 3 and 4) through MITO, proving to himself that he had nothing to worry about. In fact, Timo excelled in his apprenticeship, completing it in half the time that the qualification is expected to take.

John Connell, NZ Bus Regional Fleet Maintenance Manager, couldn’t agree more. “After completing his apprenticeship he’s slotted into the team perfectly as a full-time worker. It’s good for us because we know his track record, we know what he’s like as an employee, and we know the quality of his training.”

“I really pushed myself to learn as much as possible,” he says. “I did my bookwork from 5pm to midnight six days a week. I even did everything in pencil first and then went back over it in pen to double check my answers.” Where did this incredible drive come from? “I just focused on what I wanted to achieve, and tried to enjoy it at the same time!” he says. Timo also credits his wife and children as great support during his apprenticeship. “I’d come home and tell them I’d passed another assessment and they’d all be excited for me. It was awesome to have that support.” “The team at MITO were also a huge help during my apprenticeship,” Timo adds. “My Industry Training Advisor, Tom, was really great. I honestly can’t find the words to say how much I appreciated his help throughout my training programme.”

Now that he’s finished his study, Timo is itching to get right back into more training. “I’m not doing bookwork anymore, so I’m at home and I’m all fidgety - my wife keeps telling me I need to get a hobby!” He’s keen to get stuck in to MITO’s First Line Management Programme, and with his drive and work ethic, he’d be the perfect candidate. “I don’t want to be on the tools for the rest of my life,” he says. “So management is the next obvious step for me.” “At my age, I didn’t think I could do something like this,” Timo says.

"You’ve just got to focus on your goals, and enjoy the experience. I really believe that if you put your mind to something, anything’s possible.”

To accelerate your career with a nationally recognised qualification through MITO, call 0800 88 21 21 or visit mito.nz

DEALER PROFILE

INGHAM-SEARS This month we caught up with the team at Ingham-Sears, Mount Maunganui, a participating retailer in the GetGenuine programme, rewarding points to trade customers on Mercedes-Benz genuine parts purchases. Ingham-Sears is part of the Ingham Group, with multiple retailers across the North Island. What is the history behind Ingham-Sears?

Why genuine parts?

Based in Mount Maunganui, we have proudly been part of the community for more than 14 years. Operated by Gavin Sebire, who took on the role as General Manager earlier this year.

The best or nothing. As an authorised Mercedes-Benz Service Centre, we only use genuine parts which come with their own 24-month warranty. All oils, parts and accessories are manufactured to the same standards as the vehicles themselves, ensuring that the vehicles performance is never compromised by the fitment of non-genuine, potentially inferior quality components.

We have state-of-the-art servicing facilities, that have recently undergone an upgrade. This gives the team access to the latest tools and Mercedes-Benz diagnostic equipment. We operate as part of the Ingham Group, with multiple Mercedes-Benz, Hyundai, Mitsubishi, Isuzu and Kia retailers located across the North Island. The Ingham Group was founded by John Ingham over 40 years ago and we’re proud to be part of such a highly regarded group.

What is your secret to success? Our reputation for quality and rich expertise has travelled beyond the region, and we pride ourselves to be committed to supreme product and customer experience. We also offer complimentary loan cars and a pick-up service.

Tell us about your parts department?

What does the future hold for your business?

We have a highly experienced Parts Supervisor, Shaun Dimond, who works alongside a team of skilled and knowledgeable technicians, who are committed to ensure every vehicle is maintained in optimal condition. The team is here to offer advice, as well as being constantly trained to keep up to date with the latest product developments.

It’s an exciting time ahead of us. From a brand perspective our cars will become an intelligent, automotive companion rather than just a vehicle to transport us from A to B. The traditional combustion engine will stay with us for the next years, but electro mobility will gain further traction and with it a new range of technology. Mercedes-Benz Triple Points Promotion Congratulations to Tom Johnston, the month one winner in the 2019 Mercedes-Benz Triple Points Promotion. Tom, from Mt Maunganui Collision Repairs, is a customer of Ingham-Sears and won himself $1,000 worth of genuine Mercedes-Benz merchandise.

VAN KLINK SECURES TITLE IN NAIL-BITING SEASON FINALE Christchurch’s Marcus van Klink has secured the Motorsport New Zealand two-wheel drive section of the Brian Green Property Group New Zealand Rally Championship, after a thrilling battle at the final round, the Handy Rentals Hamilton Rally of Waitomo. Source: talkmotorsport.co.nz

Throughout the season, van Klink had set the pace and looked set to secure the title with a round to spare, before a burst appendix saw him forced to sit out the penultimate round on the Coromandel Peninsula and consequently seeing his lead reduced to zero, forcing a winner takes all shootout. Wet conditions greeted the teams and van Klink posted what he thought was a strong opening time in the Triple Rotor Mazda RX-8, only to find championship rival Anthony Jones set a time 15 seconds faster. In fact it would be the fourth stage before van Klink and Dave Neill could take a stage win away from their rivals, taking the seventh fastest outright stage time and quickest two-wheel drive through the 42 kilometre monster, reducing the deficit from 26.2 seconds to 7.2 seconds. The penultimate stage saw the gap open to nine seconds but with the final stage of the rally the longest at 43km, there was plenty to play for. After charging through the final stage van Klink set the fastest two-wheel drive time and seventh quickest overall, only to find his rival suffered a mechanical issue, meaning he not only won the rally but the overall twowheel drive title as well.

MCELREA SHINES IN INDY PRO 2000 TEST A successful ninth annual Chris Griffis Memorial Road to Indy Test wrapped up after two days of running, under ideal conditions at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Grand Prix road course. A total of 44 drivers from 12 different nations turned well over 4,700 laps between them over the two days, representing all three levels of the Road to Indy Presented by Cooper Tires, with the majority of fastest times being set in the morning. This year’s USF2000 championship runner-up Hunter McElrea, from New Zealand, continued to display his ability by stepping up to the Indy Pro 2000 Championship Presented by Cooper Tires Tatuus PM-18 for the first time and posting the fastest time for Pabst Racing.

12

McElrea emerged with the fastest time – as he did one year ago in USF2000 – turning a best lap of 1:19.4553, an average speed of 110.507 mph. Pabst Racing teammate Colin Kaminsky, from Homer Glen, Ill., was only a few ticks of the watch slower at 1:19.5716. “This is surreal, actually,” declared 19-year-old McElrea. “I was quickest at this test last year in USF2000 and that really put me on the map going into the (Road to Indy) Shootout (which McElrea won to secure his drive in this year’s USF2000 Championship) – and now, I’m here a year later topping the Indy Pro 2000 test." MACKENZIE & SAYERS MAKE IT TWO-OUTOF-TWO WITH EMPHATIC TARGA NZ WIN Haydn Mackenzie and co-driver Matthew Sayers (Mitsubishi Evo 10) have won the five-day/1,932km 25th anniversary Targa New Zealand tarmac motor rally. The pair crossing the finish line in Palmerston North with a lead of almost 12 minutes over the second-placed Porsche 991 GT3 RS of 2103 event winners Martin Dippie and his co-driver Jona Grant.

SMALL BROTHERS WIN ONE HOUR TITLE WHILE CLASS TITLES GET SHAKE UP Chris and Johnny Small have won the Carter’s Tyres South Island Endurance One Hour Series title after taking victory in the final fourth round in Christchurch. The Timaru pairing won two of the four rounds beating home rival Jarrod Owens (Porsche 997 Cup S) by 18-points at the Mike Pero Motorsport Park. Strategy was the key for the Small’s, which saw them shadowing Owens for much of the race until the latter punctured with less than five minutes to go. Winner of the second and third rounds Marco Schelp had problems in qualifying with his Porsche 997 Cup S and was unable to turn a lap. Living locally, he quickly brought in another car (BMW) and started from the back of the grid only to strike problems in the first lap and retired out of the race.

In doing so, Mackenzie – the 35-year-old dealer principal at his family’s Toyota dealership in Auckland’s Albany and good mate Sayers, who works in sales in Hamilton, claimed their second major Targa event win in a year. Having earned their first, at the three-day Targa Hawke’s Bay event in May.

Owens had shown that he was quickest in the opening round at Teretonga Park in Invercargill in September but spun, allowing the Small’s through to win. While Schelp won the following two rounds he was never in contention for overall honours not having competed at Teretonga.

Their impressive from-the-front win also broke the five-event winning streak by fellow Aucklanders Glenn Inkster and Spencer Winn (Mitsubishi Evo 8) who set the pace early on, only to fall victim to an engine bay fire on the first stage – Fields Track - on the Friday.

Third overall was the pairing of Allan Dippie/Scott O’Donnell (Porsche 997 Cup S) followed by Jonas Patterson (Porsche 991 Cup) and Steve Nicolas (Porsche 997 Cup). The first non-Porsche finisher in sixth overall was Steve Scoles (Ginetta G55).

In taking over the lead from Inkster and Winn and going on to win this year’s Taupo-Palmerston North event, Mackenzie and Sayers have added their names to an exalted list of recent Targa NZ winners which includes circuit-owning Scottish-born entrepreneur Tony Quinn and his Adelaide-based co-driver Naomi Tillett (Nissan GT-R35) who won the event four-times in a row between 2009 and 2012, and this year’s runners-up, Dunedin duo Martin Dippie and co-driver Jona Grant (Porsche 991 GT3 RS) who won it outright in 2013. INDUSTRY NEWS

ONE IN EIGHT DRIVERS FALLING ASLEEP WHILE DRIVING To combat this, Jaguar has developed a Driver Condition Monitor technology that reacts to the signs of a drowsy driver by providing an early warning which encourages the driver to take a break.

The findings showed nearly 37% of drivers have been so tired that they have been scared about falling sleep. The latest NZ Ministry of Transport statistics suggest that accidents caused by driver fatigue factors in 36 deaths, 142 serious injuries and 663 minor injuries on our roads annually. The system takes inputs from thousands of data points, including the electronic power Assisted Steering system, pedal inputs and general driving behaviour. The monitor is fitted as standard across the Jaguar range. Jaguar Land Rover NZ general manager Steve Kenchington says the company is working to help address accidents caused by driver fatigue. “Technologies such as the Driver Condition Monitor as well as a range of Advanced Driver Assistance

Systems (ADAS) are now standard across the Jaguar range,” Kenchington says. “These systems are capable of identifying the systems of fatigue and intervening to help prevent or mitigate collisions.” AA Charitable Trust director Edmund King says the statistics around drowsy drivers are shocking and under-reported. “Any measure that helps reduce the risk of tired drivers, such as Jaguar’s Driver Condition Monitor, is to be welcomed. The only real cure for tiredness is to rest – if drivers feel tired, or are alerted to possible tiredness by their car, they should pull over at the next safe place, drink a caffeinated drink and take a short nap,” King says.

2019 TRIPLE POINTS

PROMOTION MONTH TWO WINNER Shane Fraser from James & Kingsbeer in Palmerston North, was the lucky winner of 100,000 GetGenuine points in the second month of the 2019 Ford Triple Points Promotion. We caught up with him to talk about his business and get his thoughts on genuine parts.

Tell us a bit about your business. Located on Fairs Road in Palmerston North, we specialise in modern crash repairs and finishing techniques from resprays to touch-ups. We cater to all makes and models. We have a team of expert spray painters and rust removal specialists and service cars, trucks, vans, utes and 4WDs. How did you get into the industry? I left school at 15 and took a job in the industry. Apart from a short stint as the owner of my own carpet cleaning business, it's what I've always done. I’ve worked around the world as a panelbeater, Kiwi’s are loved overseas for their all-round ability; we're trained that way. Whereas overseas they have specialist strippers, specialist repairers etc.

What potential changes do you see for the industry moving forward? Electric vehicles will become a challenge for repairers, the dangers of working on them, learning new ways of repairing them and safety. Also, the move towards alloy panels on some vehicles, needing specialist repair training and equipment. We will see the need for more specialists in these fields. What's your secret to success? We keep everything friendly and personal; we like to say the business has changed with the times but kept our core values the same, so customers feel like it’s the same it's always been. Reliable, friendly and personal service is important.

What led you to purchase this business?

What do you think of GetGenuine points?

I was working in the business as the foreman, previously owned by Gary James and purchased it from him in 2003. With the advent of Parts Trader and systems becoming computerised, Gary decided it was time to retire.

I’ve redeemed some cool stuff in the past with my points. Knowing you can spend them on anything you want is awesome. For my next redemptions, I plan on getting something nice for my wife!

Why do you choose genuine parts? Genuine parts fit right, first time. We always have problems with aftermarket.
