FOUR OUT OF 10 CARS FAIL FIRST INSPECTION Four in every 10 vehicles are not roadworthy enough to pass its first inspection. End of year figures show 1,886,104 vehicles fail their first warrant of fitness inspection in 2019.

Motor Trade Association (MTA) advocacy and strategy manager Greig Epps says the 41% fail rate should ring alarm bells for all road users. “We reached this recordhigh failure rate in the middle of last year and it continued throughout the rest of the 2019,” Epps says.

“It shows that many car owners still rely on the warrant of fitness inspection to discover any problems. Drivers need to be doing more to monitor the safety of their car. Everyone should check the most common issues – lights, brakes, suspension and tyres at least every six months.” The failure rate of commercials, such as taxis, business fleets and trucks, was between 17% and 23%, depending on the category of vehicle. “Commercial operators are safety rated and passing their inspections is an important component of their rating.” Epps says most MTA workshops are able to do a check at affordable rates, if a car owner did not feel comfortable doing their own check. The MTA is urging the government to add a component on vehicle maintenance to the driver licence test. “We believe the driver training process should include information on how to do a simple safety inspection to ensure the vehicle is roadworthy,” Epps says. “The message should be that any necessary repairs should be done straight away – for the safety of everyone on the road.” Source: autotalk.co.nz

MOTORSPORT NEWS

FORMULA OPEN IS A HAPPENING THING The brainchild of Ken Smith and John Tomlin, Formula Open NZ (FONZ) aims to hopefully see the return of decent crowd sizes for historic club racing events. The championship, operated separately from Formula Libre, is a sole ‘wings and slicks class’ for some of New Zealand’s historic and modern open-wheelers that no longer have any set series to race in. The current grid is composed of some high speed, ground effect Swift DB4 Formula Pacific’s, FT40 and FT50 TRS cars, a Formula Renault, and the more historic Formula Supervee’s and Formula Suzuki’s’. All drivers are happy to be able to race their special machinery against some iconic cars and names of New Zealand single-seaters, and unanimously agree that the series is dictated more out of enjoyment than being a fully serious campaign. The class’ first season currently only races in the North Island but is set in accordance with South Island series to promote drivers from down south to participate in what is a supposed national series. However, the possibility of FONZ racing in the South Island in the next few seasons are extremely likely, and race organisers would like to extend a large appreciation to the few drivers from the South Island who made the tireless commitment to a small series away from home at their expense. SHARP GETS FIA KARTING ACADEMY TROPHY SERIES CALL-UP Young Christchurch karter, Louis Sharp, will be piling up the Airpoints this year as he flies to and from Europe to contest the three-round FIA Karting Academy Trophy Series. The invitation-only ‘arriveand-drive’ series is an initiative by the sport’s governing body, FIA Karting, to ‘level the playing field’ for promising young drivers from around the world and Sharp was selected for the position by KartSport New Zealand from a high quality list of local applicants. Despite his tender years Sharp could hardly be better qualified, in the six years he has been competing here in New Zealand, he has won 11 titles across two classes, including two NZ titles, five South Island titles as well as NZ Schools, Challenge Cup, Mainland Series and WPKA Goldstar titles. He is also no stranger to getting on a plane and flying to the other side of the world to compete, or to making a big impression when he is there. Last year he won the Mini ROK class B-Final at the big Autumn Trophy meeting at the South Garda Kart Track at Lonato, before a week later finishing third in the Singha Trophy (Mini ROK B-Main) race at the annual ROK Cup Superfinal. This year the FIA Karting Academy Trophy series kicks off in early May and includes a round at Genk in Belgium in June, before a third and final round at Le Mans in France. MURPHY CONFIRMS US FORMULA 4 FOR 2020 Up and coming New Zealand single seater race Ronan Murphy will go stateside in 2020 and take part in the United States Formula 4 Championship – his first foray into international competition. Eighteen-year-old Murphy, son of the four time Bathurst 1000 winner Greg, will complete his current campaign in the New Zealand F1600 championship before heading over to the USA to compete with successful Kiwi Motorsport team in the category. Kiwi Motorsport is headed by New Zealanders Garry Orton and Teena Larsen (with Ronan) and has an impressive track record in the FIA sanctioned category. In 2019 it had three finishers in the top five of the championship, including winner Joshua Carr from Australia. Murphy has already tested the team’s F4 car at both the Cresson circuit in Texas last April and Buttonwillow Raceway towards the end of 2019. He is keen to step up to a wings and slicks formula car after seasons in F1600 and New Zealand’s starter Formula First category. Murphy’s championship trail starts at the Michelin Raceway, Road Atlanta on April 9th before moving to the Circuit of the Americas on June 5th. On July 17th the championship visits Virginia International Raceway for round three. Round four takes place just two weeks later at the Barber Motorsports Park. Round five is at Sebring on September 25th and the championship finale will be at the United States Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas from October 23rd. Source: talkmotorsport.co.nz

MILLS COLLISION REPAIR CENTRE

This month we caught up with Shannon and Amanda Mills, owners of Mills Collision Repair Centre in Hamilton. Shannon was the lucky winner of the 2019 Ford Triple Points Promotion, receiving 200,000 GetGenuine points as his prize.

Tell us a bit about yourself and Mills Collision Repair Centre.

What do you think of the GetGenuine programme?

Mills Collision Repair Centre has been family owned and operated for over 40 years, so we understand what’s important to our customers. We are approved repairers for several OEMs including Mercedes-Benz.

I think it’s fantastic! It’s not often you get perks, especially in the panel industry, so getting points for our everyday business spend is a real bonus.

We specialise in collision repair and participate with all insurance companies, meaning there is no need to obtain several estimates. Our warm and friendly team are knowledgeable and will take care of your vehicle from start to finish. I have spent my life in the industry, with a small break working as a mechanic in Asia, with a rally team. I returned to NZ and went on to take over my father’s business with my wife Amanda in June last year, having worked alongside him for the past 20 years. Our goal at Mills Collision Repair Centre is to provide excellence in all that we do, and we continue to pride ourselves on the best service and experience possible. Why do you choose genuine parts? It’s simple really, the parts are right first time. There’s no modifying required which saves time and provides a higher quality finish for our customers, with parts that are guaranteed to last the distance. Most of our work is done on newer, prestige vehicles so it’s a no brainer for us to fit the highest quality parts we can find. Given how parallel pricing is between OEM and aftermarket now we rarely even investigate alternative options.

"The GetGenuine programme makes us aware of who we choose to deal with and influences my decision to shop with participating suppliers." Have you thought about what you might redeem with your points? We are going to take the kids to Fiji for a family holiday. We're hoping to book a mid-winter getaway to have something to look forward to! Would you recommend the programme to others in the industry? Absolutely! The benefits are great, and the points accumulate really fast. The flexibility and freedom to choose whatever we want is a real point of difference and we look forward to earning even more points next year! INDUSTRY NEWS

ACCELERATING EV SALES REFLECT LOWER EMISSION AVERAGE The Motor Industry Association of New Zealand (MIA) says the increase in sales of new electrified vehicles is starting to have a positive impact on average greenhouse gas emissions which dropped at significantly faster rate in 2019 than in the previous five years. MIA chief executive David Crawford says emissions have dropped from 220.7 grams per km to 174.4 grams per km, an overall drop of 21% since 2006 when the MIA began annual recording of average emissions for new vehicles as they enter the fleet. The rate of reduction has been flat since 2014, but have been accelerating again since 2018 with the 2019 drop of 2.6% being the biggest reduction on one year since 2013. Crawford says this is a positive trend and is a result of a growing range of models with some form of electrification coming on to the market as well as increasing fuel efficiency across a whole range of new vehicles. “Nearly 9,000 new vehicles powered by some form of electrification sold in New Zealand last year. That’s a major jump from the previous year when there were fewer than 4,000 sold.” “As the range of brands and models of electric vehicles grows, they’re also becoming more affordable, and more New Zealanders are seeing them as being a viable purchase. The drop in emissions is also helped by the big volume of small efficient petrol vehicles on the market and increased efficiency across a range of models.” “We are a tiny market on the global stage and have minimal ability to directly influence manufacturers, but these figures show that we are able to closely follow progressive regions, such as Europe, in reducing emissions from our light vehicle fleet.” He says the accelerating rate in the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions from the new vehicle fleet calls into question the need for the Government to introduce its proposed clean car policies. However, if the Government feels the need to introduce policies to support the reduction in emission then the proposed clean car discount, which provides rebates to purchasers of fuel-efficient vehicles while attaching penalties to larger less fuel-efficient models, will help reinforce this positive trend.

MOTORSPORT NEWS

PADDON TAKES AIM AT THREE CHAMPIONSHIP TITLES Kiwi rally star Hayden Paddon has set himself a fresh goal for 2020: to win three rally championship titles.

Paddon’s goals form a key aspect of Hyundai New Zealand’s 2020 motorsport programme when he lines up in his Hyundai i20 AP4 to contest four rounds of the 2020 Brian Green Property Group New Zealand Rally Championship. Then it’s off to Rally Coffs Harbour in Australia for the chance to win the FIA Pacific Cup for the second consecutive year as well as take out the outright FIA Asia Pacific Rally Championship title. The first two New Zealand rounds – Rally Otago running 3-5 April and the International Rally of Whangarei on 8-10 May – are also the opening rounds of the Pacific Cup. The Pacific Cup final and the winner-takes-all APRC finale take place at Rally Coffs Harbour on 27-29 November.

Rally South Canterbury in June and Rally Hawke’s Bay in July are the other two NZRC events where Paddon will head the entry lists. Paddon will also enter a few key events outside the rally season. “We’ll be lining up for the Ben Nevis Station Golden 1200 in March, which is being organised by Paddon Rallysport, and the Ashley Forest Rallysprint in September for which our team will transform the Hyundai AP4 into its high horsepower, big aero hillclimb spec. Other events may still be added to this schedule.” Source: talkmotorsport.co.nz

A life-long ambition to have a current specification, top level rally car has come to fruition for Matt Summerfield. The North Canterbury driver recently took possession of his new Mitsubishi Mirage AP4 rally car and will be a title contender come the start of the New Zealand championship series at the beginning of April.

NEW MIRAGE AP4 RALLY CAR FOR SUMMERFIELD

Summerfield followed a family tradition in rallying when he started in 2008, and 12 years later has finally got what amounts to a “brand new car.” In recent years Summerfield has been no stranger to pushing for top spots in an ageing Subaru Impreza, even finishing runner-up in the national championship and winning rallies outright. But the technology in the Mirage AP4 is a decade newer than what he’s been used to, and although it’s a championship winning car, getting the best out of it and himself will take mileage. Partnered again this season by sister and co-driver Nicole, the duo are keen to get their first rally underway and are planning a competitive debut at the Westland Rally on March 14. For them both, competing in a car like this is a dream come true. Source: talkmotorsport.co.nz

BERNIE FAMA PANEL & PAINT

We recently dropped in to catch up with Jamie and Amber from Bernie Fama Panel & Paint in Hamilton, to talk about their business and get their view on genuine parts.

Tell us about yourself and the business? Bernie Fama Panel & Paint has been family owned and operated since its humble beginnings in Hamilton, over 35 years ago. We service all makes and models and continue to grow steadily, with a goal to provide our customers with an unbeatable service experience and vehicle finish.

customer commitment is designed to deliver a quality service, and we apply the highest standards throughout. Also, as part of our commitment to a greener image, we use environmentally friendly paint. How many staff do you employ?

We are certified gold class repairers for IAG NZ. As well as approved repairers for Tower, Lantern Insurance, State Insurance, NZI insurance, NAC Insurance and a preferred repairer for all other insurance companies.

Here at Bernie Fama we have 18 members of staff, ready and waiting to help customers with any panel or paint requirements. Our paint team is young, enthusiastic and highly qualified in various paint techniques.

I originally started as a tradesman painter at the age of 17, working my way up through the industries and went on to join Bernie Fama in 2009. After a few years as foreman I took over the business in 2019, along with my partner Amber.

Why do you use genuine parts?

What inspired you to get into the industry? I have been passionate about cars and the automotive industry from a young age. My very first car was a KE30 Corolla. Soon after this I discovered a love for performance vehicles and rotaries, owning several RX2’s through the years. I have always been involved in the Panel & Painting industry so naturally it made sense for me to continue to develop my passion and skills.

Genuine parts are more cost effective in the long run. We believe in fitting quality products that we can confidently assure will last the mile. This is especially important in our industry when dealing with insurance work. We can trust genuine parts to fit right the first time. Something we often can’t do when we go second hand or aftermarket as the condition is not apparent until the parts arrive.

"Overall genuine parts save us time, money and support our mantra of quality service and vehicle repair."

What sets you apart from your competitors?

MT SMART STADIUM BASE TO PROVIDE HISTORIC ACTION FOR RALLY NEW ZEALAND Rally New Zealand will make history inside Mt Smart Stadium when it returns as part of the World Rally Championship in Auckland this September. An historic Super Special Stage is also set to be created to run inside the stadium on both Friday and Saturday of the rally. The four-day event will be based in Auckland from 3 to 6 September 2020, and has the backing of Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development (ATEED). The Mayor of Auckland, Phil Goff confirmed Mt Smart Stadium as the home base for Rally New Zealand today, driven into the stadium by kiwi rally star Hayden Paddon, who also confirmed his involvement as the official ambassador for the event. While Paddon continues to work through his driving options for the event, he was on hand to confirm that his long-time backers, Hyundai New Zealand are the first elite sponsor to announce their sponsorship of the event. Flying Scotsman Alister McRae has done it again – winning his fourth consecutive Leadfoot Festival in a drama-filled Top Ten Shootout, which saw two cars crash off the Hahei driveway. Before Australia-based McRae’s final run in the late Possum Bourne’s Vantage WRC Subaru, event founder Rod Millen flew off the track in his hugehorsepower Toyota Celica. Once he emerged from the car unhurt, the shootout continued with McRae posting a 48.31 secs time – slightly faster than his quickest qualifying time of 48.5secs on the Saturday, but not as quick as his record-breaking 47.99 secs he set last year.

Then the 2019 runner-up, Rotorua’s Sloan Cox also exited the Coromandel track at high speed, leaving McRae with a win in the nearly 900-horsepower Subaru, which was run successfully once again by Speedhub Motorsport and the Vantage team. Former WRC driver Hayden Paddon, of Cromwell, enjoyed his “pocket rocket” Crosskart, saying that he had good fun trying to get it under 50 secs and succeeded on his final run posting a 49.86 secs and taking second place honours. INDUSTRY NEWS

MASERATI ANNOUNCES ELECTRIFIED RANGE DEVELOPMENT PLAN Maserati’s electrification programme starts this year, with the Maserati Ghibli its first hybrid car. The brand’s first all-electric cars will be the new GranTurismo and GranCabrio, production starting in 2021. All new Maserati models will be developed, engineered and built in Italy, and will adopt hybrid and battery electric propulsion systems. Following on from the announcement of testing of the new full electric powerplants to be installed on future Maserati models, the development and production plans for its electrified range are now presented. Maserati will build the GranTurismo and GranCabrio at the Mirafiori production hub, with an 800 million euro investment. During 2020, Mirafiori will be strengthening its position as a world hub dedicated to electrification and future mobility, a large proportion of its capacity allocated to new electrified cars. However, Maserati retains its headquarters in Modena, where the cars in its range are developed and tested. In 2020, the first of the new Modena-built Maserati models will be the super sports car. Major modernisation work is in progress on the production line at the Modena plant, partly to accommodate the electric version of the new super sports car. At the same time, work has already started on a paint shop, a new addition to the facility. Modena is the home of the Innovation Lab – Maserati’s technological research, development and design centre. Also upcoming is a new Maserati utility vehicle, to be built at Cassino and intended to play a leading role for the brand. Source: autotalk.co.nz

MOTORSPORT NEWS

TOWNSHEND FOR LE MANS CLASSIC Noted Christchurch classic saloon car racer Roger Townshend is quickly coming to terms with the reality of having his entry being accepted to compete at the famous Le Mans 24-hour classic meeting in July. The key to the acceptance was the history of his ex-works 1972 Ford Cologne Capri RS2600, a car that he bought out of Australia after buying the Fahey Capri in the mid-1980s (a car that he is still working on). With the works Capri he has competed at many classic meetings on South Island tracks. With another noted Christchurch racer Gary Wilkinson as his co-driver, the pair now face a busy two months getting the car ready before its April shipping date. The car has significant history and will return to Le Mans where it was first driven by German driver Dieter Glemser and Spanish co-driver Alex Soler-Roig (#52 Ford Capri 2.9 lit V6) to 11th overall and second in Class at the 1972, 24 Hours of Le Mans. Later that year it went on to win the Spa 24 Hours in the hands of Jochen Mass and Hans Stuck. The classic event is a bi-annual one, where each of six age group categories is programmed for three fifty- minute races over a 24-hour period. Minute and a half pit stops are compulsory. The Townshend Capri will compete with cars from the 1972 to 1979 era and on the full 13.65km track. The start time is the traditional 4pm. Source: talkmotorsport.co.nz

PURSUING PASSION PAYS OFF While completing a degree in psychology, Rose Wylie bought herself a run-down motorbike. She spent hours in her garage fixing it up, using Google and YouTube tutorials to guide her. It was during those hours in the garage that Rose realised psychology wasn’t what she wanted to be doing for the rest of her life.

It clicked for me one day that I was truly happy when I was working on my bike,” says Rose. From there, she made the choice to leave psychology behind and pursue a career in the automotive industry. Now, 25-year-old Rose is an apprentice light vehicle technician at Rutherford & Bond Toyota, Wellington, and is completing a New Zealand Certificate in Light Automotive Engineering through MITO. “Toyota is such a great place to work,” says Rose. “We get to work on a lot of newer vehicles here, which is really interesting. They’re all really hi-tech, so it’s great to be exposed to that kind of technology, and to learn on-the-job about all the new functions.” Rose spends her days doing servicing and diagnostic work, and loves being able to see the results of her efforts. “With psychology, it’s not really a case of just fixing something and it’s done. In this line of work, I love the satisfaction of being able to see something come in, fix it, and know it’s going out the door safer than it was when it came in.”

“If it’s a passion of yours, just go for it – you won’t regret it.” While Rose loves being able to be hands-on every day, it’s the people she works with that make her love her job that much more. “Everyone here is so supportive and work as such a great team. We all just want to see each other succeed which is really nice.”

As someone who has done a complete 180 career wise – “I definitely received some backlash when I decided to make the switch from psychology to automotive!”- Rose is all for people giving their passions a go as a career. “It’s really important to follow what makes you happy and not worry about what other people will think,” she says. Rutherford & Bond Workshop Manager, Strat Campbell was impressed by Rose from the moment he interviewed her and sees her as a valuable part of the team. “She’s really eager to learn, and puts her hand up to do anything,” he says. “She’s also very efficient at what she does, and the quality of her work is coming out at a really high level which is fantastic – she ticks all the boxes for us.” For Strat, having apprentices in the workshop is a vital part of the business. “The biggest benefit for us is that we are able to train our apprentices exactly how we want them to be trained,” he says. “Then, as they work their way up the ladder, we can bring in more apprentices and begin the process again. That way we know all of our staff are trained to our standards.” Now well on her way to becoming qualified, Rose has no regrets about her change of career path, and strongly encourages others to consider a job in the industry. “I understand that as a female the thought of being the only woman in a workshop can be a little daunting, but I’ve had no issues with it at all,” she says.

Boost your business with MITO’s on-the-job training programmes. Call 0800 88 21 21 or visit mito.nz
