Las Lajas Sanctuary in Colombia - Built at a height of 100m inside the canyon of the Guáitara River, this church became a pilgrimage site after the Virgin Mary appeared in front of a woman and her deaf-mute daughter caught in a violent storm here in the 18th century. The present Gothic-style church was built between 1916 and 1949; a bridge connects it to the opposite side of the canyon. This place of worship is another reminder of the will, effort and money put into the construction of churches and chapels. Whether seen as the culmination of a pilgrimage or as a more casual visit, this religious building is among the world's greatest.

Invitations for our Parish Way Forward 2016 and Beyond: We are now moving on the implementation of our Parish Project in the coming months RE: Parish Way Forward. This is a project in lieu of the celebration of our 130 Parish Anniversary (1885-2015). You can become a member of the Way Forward Committee. There are different areas or aspects in our parish life and ministry where you can engage your God-given talents, skills and capabilities. In the Eucharist you take one or more liturgical ministries. Please consider the following: Readers, Altar Servers, Communion Ministers, Church Cleaners, Choir Members or Musicians ( you can either start your own choir group in the parish). We are organizing a Training Day from the Liturgical Office sometime midway this year. One thing that we really wish is creating a group in charge of the Liturgical Environment; that is, help setting up for innovative liturgical environ in the church, both on special and ordinary occasions. We have a beautiful church, and we want to make it a lovelier and more prayer-filled set-up for everyone. It you think you are capable of doing this, please email us or approach the Parish Priest. Holy Rosary– Will restart on 12th January. Please call Margaret on 0450 490 768 if you would like to host the Rosary in 2016. Heartbeats from your priest

Fr Eduardo

Happy New Year to all! We are now on the 3rd day of the new year, and we began the New Year with a great solemnity in honour of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The honour that we give the Blessed Mother on this special day is the so-called “Theotokos,” or “Mother of God or “Mother bearer.” The question once again baffles many: How can God have a mother? Well, it seems like an obvious error to call anyone the mother of God, since God is eternal: he has no beginning or end. The Incarnation introduced an amazing change: ―When the designated time had come, God sent forth his son, born of a woman…‖ The designated time for the Child to be born was at Christmas morning. There might be a simpler explanation; it is this: that Jesus is God, the Word of the Father, and Mary is his Mother, therefore, Mary is truly Mother of God. This Sunday we are celebrating the Epiphany of the Lord, that is, the “manifestation” of the Lord. This feast is tied to the biblical narrative of the coming of the Magi from the East to Bethlehem to pay homage to the King of the Jews. Thus, the Epiphany brings to the fore the universal opening of salvation brought by Jesus. This core message reverberates today in the acclamation: ―Lord, every nation on earth will adore you,‖ because Jesus came for all, for every nation, for everyone. Amen!

In this New Year, let us bless one another especially our family members, instead of just saying “good luck!” which is really nothing to do with the new year. I believe in God’s amazing grace and generosity. Let us entrust our life and our future to a God who is infinitely loving and merciful. Let us not surrender ourselves to the blind forces of luck that benefit only a very few people and leave so many condemned to misfortune. I also believe in the fruitfulness of honesty, patience and hard work. I wish you all a happy and grace-filled New Year! Your Parish Priest, Fr Eduardo NB: Fr Eduardo will be leading a group to the Holy Land on the 10th of January to the 21st. Do remember them in your prayers. Supply priests have been allocated for Fr Eduardo in the parish.

Visit our Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration Chapel; you can come and pray anytime of day and night. Our Lord is waiting for you!

St Joachim’s Youth Ministry would like to thank everyone who has supported their Fund-raising events (BBQs, sale of Catholic Weekly and donations) during 2015. Your support is greatly appreciated as every little bit helps in our effort to raise funds for attendance at the World Youth Day 2016 in Krakow, Poland. We hope that you have had a wonderful Christmas with your nearest and dearest and we pray that the New Year brings you happiness, peace, joy and good tidings for you and your family. Happy New Year 2016
