February 2023
“Holy! Holy! Holy!”
“It Came Upon the Midnight Clear,”“Go Tell it on the Mountain,”“O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing,” “When Peace, Like a River” – what do these songs all have in common? They’re all based on Isaiah. What is is about this prophet that makes it so singable? To wrap up our study of Isaiah, this Sunday, February 19, in the Sparks Fellowship Hall, we’ll sing and talk about as many of these as we can. We’ll also have donuts.
Join us on Fat Tuesday, February 21 at 5:30 pm in the Sparks Fellowship Hall for a pancake dinner. All Proceeds benefit the SJLCYouth Ministry.
Suggested Donations: $5 per person or no more than $20 per family
Ash Wednesday (February 22)
Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent, as we are marked with the cross of Christ and remember “We are dust, and to dust we shall return.” It’s a tender and beautiful thing to remember we are not God; we are God’s creation, made from dust and filled with God’s own breath. We will have two services in our sanctuary, at noon and 6:30 PM, following a light supper at 5:30 PM in Sparks Fellowship Hall
Two Opportunities
for Lenten Devotion
• A six-week intentional prayer emphasis, both online and in-person opportunities to pray for our neighborhood, congregation, lay leaders, staff members, and pastors
• A book study (both in person and online) of Thank God It's Friday, Encountering the Seven Last from the Cross by William H. Willimon … please order your book online so you will have it for our first meeting in early March.
Details to follow via e-mail!
Delegation headed to Guatemala
March 1 - 9, 2023
Pray for our delegation as we prepare to travel to Guatemala.
Pastor Stephen Friedrich from Peace Lutheran is leading a group that includes Val Taylor and Nancy and Jim Friedrich from St. John’s Lutheran Knoxville; our own Pastor Robin Lovett-Owens from Christ Lutheran in Nashville; four members of Peace Lutheran; and one member from Epiphany Lutheran Suwannee, GA. This trip is focused on building relationships and accompaniment with the Lutheran Church in Guatemala (ILAG). During the trip, they will worship, study the bible, sing, visit the MILAGRO Women's Center, visit the Lutheran Elementary School, learn about Guatemalan culture, and spend time together with Pr. Karen Castillo, Diego Gil, and other leaders in ILAG.
More information will be shared in the coming weeks and following the trip.
March 1, 8, 15, 22, and 29
6:00 to 7:00 PM
Sparks Fellowship Hall
Wednesdays during Lent, as a way to emphasize the connection between shared meals and Communion, we will have Abbey Dinners, an informal meal with table conversation around scripture and Communion all rolled into the meal, starting at 6:00 and ending at 7:00 (in time for kids’ bedtimes and choir rehearsal). There will be singing and toys available for our little ones. Mostly though, there will be shared food, conversation, prayer, and Communion!
Where’s the name come from? The earliest church met in homes, sharing a full meal and blessing part of it the bread and wine as Communion. In later centuries, as life got more complicated, some sought a simpler life, eventually forming abbeys, shared homes with a life grounded in prayer, shared meals, shared service in the world, and Communion.
Life is complicated now, too.Abbey Dinners are a way of going spiritually back to the basics.
