The Spirit of

St. Louis @ APRIL 2015

In the fall of 2013, a parish Garden Ministry, was launched to “cultivate the land God has entrusted to us in order to bless our brothers and sisters in need.” This new ministry was the vision of our previous pastor, Fr. Larry Covington, who with design plans from parishioners, Andrew and Anna Walsh, scheduled the first workdays to prepare the ground and lay out the planting rows and walkways. With the help of Jerry Horton and large equipment from Down Home Ranch, along with hours of back-breaking work from countless volunteers, St. Louis Garden became a reality! Since that first fall harvest, the Garden has been a steady source of fresh vegetables for our St. Louis Food Pantry. To be able to offer seasonal vegetables, along with food staples like flour, sugar, dried beans, rice and canned products is a wonderful gift for the neediest among us. In just under two years the “garden” has grown into a working “farm” and ongoing tasks include tilling, planting, weeding, watering and harvesting the fruits of their labor. Volunteers are always welcome and will be placed in teams, who rotate their service hours with other “green thumbs.” Contact Anna Walsh for more information at annaruthwalsh@gmail.com and come be part of our “growing” ministry! Want to learn more about growing vegetables in Texas? The St. Louis Farm Committee invites you to join us in partnership with the Sustainable Food Center for a free two-part basic organic gardening class! On Saturdays, April 18 and 25, from 9:00 a.m -11:30 a.m., meet at the Farm (located at the back corner of the property near St. Joseph Street), to learn about the basics of planting, harvesting, soil care, organic pest control, water conservation, and composting. There will be some hands-on learning, so come dressed appropriately. Spanish interpreters and babysitting will be provided as needed but must be pre-scheduled. To register for the class or if you have questions, email stlouisfarmatx@gmail.com. Register by Friday, April 10 to ensure your place! Like us on Facebook for more updates

SANCTUARY CANDLE MEMORIALS

MISSION TOUR FOR THE SENIORS A Tour of the San Antonio Missions is scheduled for Thursday, April 30. Fr. James will celebrate Mass at one of the missions. There will also be time to enjoy the River Walk. The cost of the trip is $40.00. This includes transportation in a 55-passenger motor coach and gratuities for docents and bus driver. Coffee stops and lunch are not included in the price of the trip. Full payment is due in the office by the end of the day on Tuesday, April 28. For reservations and/or more information, please contact the Senior Ministry office at 512-454-0384 x 206.

The sanctuary candle is traditionally seen in Catholic churches, burning constantly to indicate the presence of the Blessed Sacrament in the tabernacle. At St. Louis, in both the main nave and the chapel, the sanctuary candles are burning high above the floor in beautifully ornate fixtures suspended from the ceiling. Parishioners are given the opportunity to memorialize a deceased loved one with a $10 contribution, selecting a specified week in which one or both of the two sanctuary candles will be burned in their honor.Visit the church office with your donation, the name of your loved one, your choice of sanctuary candle and the selected week. Memorials are denoted in the Main Nave (M/N) or Chapel (C). Memorials reserved since the last newsletter deadline include: April 5 - 11 To Honor Amy Allert by ACTS Women’s Team 2015 (M/N) To Honor Kathy Escutia by ACTS Women’s Team 2015 (C)

ST. LOUIS PRAYER GROUP

April 12 - 18 Memory of Jerry DesLattes and John Mason by Dorothy Mason (C)

Our St. Louis Prayer Group is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, as an organized parish ministry, although in actuality, it was informally meeting as early as 1974. Forty-one years later, this ministry is still gathering on Thursday evenings from 7:30 to 9:00pm, sharing their time in praise and worship! The longevity of this parish group should be no surprise, as its foundation is in the Holy Spirit. Just as in Christ’s day, people are being healed in answer to prayer, both physically and spiritually. God still speaks to the hearts of His servants to give them direction. People are still on fire with love for God and people still experience God’s Word coming to life, giving them guidance for their lives!

ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION APRIL 16TH

Participants in our St. Louis Prayer Group have all shared various prayer experiences and have grown closer to the Lord, seeing Him at work in their lives. For many, the time with the Prayer Group has been a transformational event in their lives, better equipping them for discipleship. Many others have gone on to be involved in other parish ministries or other parishes, but retain the prayer disciplines they learned in the Prayer Group. On Thursday, April 16th, Father James Misko will celebrate a special Anniversary Mass at 7:30pm in the St. Louis Chapel for all the members of the Prayer Group. Current and past members and their families are cordially invited to this reunion! Friends and supporters are also encouraged to attend and give thanks for this 40+ year journey with the Holy Spirit. For more information, contact Kerry Joe and Colleen Brockman at kerryjoe@gmail. com or (512) 785-9808 or (512) 576-5920.

ST. LOUIS CATHOLIC SCHOOL NEWS PREPARING THE LEADERS OF TOMORROW WITH THE LIGHT OF CHRIST AS THEIR GUIDE

MRS. BETH FOLEY MIDDLE SCHOOL ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS TEACHER This is Mrs. Foley's 6th year teaching at St. Louis.

Registration St. Louis Catholic School is now registering for the 2015-2016 school year! We provide a rigorous Christcentered curriculum for Pre-K4 through 8th grade that will help students achieve success beyond our walls. Tours are available by appointment and can be scheduled with the Registrar, Ms. Dowling, at 512-614-6622 x 245. Forms and additional information are available on the school website at slcsaustin. org. We look forward to making your children part of our St. Louis Catholic School family!

Why St. Louis? After retiring from the public school system, I discovered I was not ready to say good-bye to my career. I attended St. Louis Catholic School myself from grades 4-8, and my mother, Anne Peoples, was the principal of St. Louis for many years. I have a history here, so I felt fortunate to have the opportunity to return as a teacher. Why do you choose to stay? I spent 30 years teaching high school students (mostly seniors), but I have come to love working with the middle school students. They are very enthusiastic, and I appreciate their kindness and courtesy – traits that are not always in great supply in the public schools. What are your goals here? My goals as an English teacher are to make my students good readers and good writers. I have a great enthusiasm for literature and language, so I would like to instill that enthusiasm in them as well. Fun Fact: Mrs. Foley loves French and takes French classes two evenings a week. A true Francophile, she savors French culture and French literature.

EDWARD KNAPEK PHYSICAL EDUCATION TO PRE-K 8TH GRADE Mr. Knapek has been at St. Louis for 16 years and teaches physical education to Pre-K-8th grade. Why St. Louis? I really like the friendly environment. Everything about this place is welcoming and it still is after all these years. This was my first teaching job and I have worn many hats through the years. Why do you choose to stay at St. Louis? Our community is great. We have a great parish, as well as having awesome parents, students, and staff. It is more like a family environment and it is what makes us different. What are your goals here? For my students, I want them to find themselves, recognize their strengths and where they can improve, taking all of this and bettering themselves. Fun Fact: Mr. Knapek and his wife of two years met while teaching here at St. Louis. He also enjoys playing chess when he can.

Basketball Wrap-up It’s an exciting end of the season for our basketball teams. Out of the 8 teams, the 7/8AA Boys, 5/6AAAA Girls, and 5/6AA Girls went undefeated in regular season play, took first place overall and at the end of season tournament! Way to go Cougars!

Resurrection Egg Hunt As part of the School’s Holy Week activities our 8th graders will hide numbered, filled eggs for their Kindergarten buddies to find. Once each Kindergarten student has a full carton their buddy prayerfully will help open each egg in number order, then read and discuss each enclosed explanation of the Easter Mystery and examine each symbol. After closing prayer the 8th graders will make sure the Kinder egg cartons are complete so they can take the resurrection cartons home to share with their families.

EARLY CHILDHOOD MINISTRY SERVING OUR YOUNGEST PARISHIONERS

WEEK OF THE YOUNG CHILD CELEBRATING OUR YOUNGEST LEARNERS! APRIL 12–18, 2015

The Week of the Young Child™ is an annual celebration sponsored by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). The purpose of the Week of the Young Child™ is to focus public attention on the needs of young children and their families and to recognize the early childhood programs and services that meet those needs. NAEYC first established the Week of the Young Child™ in 1971, recognizing that the early childhood years (birth through age 8) laid the foundation for children's success in school and later life. The Week of the Young Child™ is a time to plan how we—as citizens of a community, of a state, and of a nation—will better meet the needs of all young children and their families. Today we know more than ever before about the importance of children's earliest years in shaping their learning and development. Yet, never before have the needs of young children and their families been more pressing.

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL JUNE 22-26

The Week of the Young Child™ is a time to recognize that children's opportunities are our responsibilities, and to recommit ourselves to ensuring that each and every child experiences the type of early environment—at home, at child care, at school, and in the community— that will promote their early learning. At the Early Childhood Development Center, we are going to celebrate the Week of the Young Child-Texas size. In the classrooms, each day we will be celebrating in different ways. Information will be emailed to the ECDC families the first week of April. Visit www.st-louis.org for registration details.

EASTER CONTINUES…

The Eucharist

During April we celebrate the month of the Holy Eucharist, a sacrament at the heart of Catholicism. In addition to Holy Communion at Mass, we at St. Louis have the luxury of a twenty-four hour adoration chapel where the Eucharist is exposed for personal prayer and meditation. You will find an abundance of material for reflection in our parish library. There are books and media that discuss the Eucharist as experienced by early Christians, and as the doctrine evolved through history, and again defined by the Second Vatican Council. Feast of Faith, the Transforming Power of the Eucharist by Marcellino D’Ambrosio – This is a dvd series offering reflections on the nature of the Eucharist. In the Presence of Our Lord: the History, Theology, and Psychology of Eucharistic Devotion by Father Benedict J. Groeschel, and James Monti – This book details the technical aspects of the Eucharist, with a focus on history and devotion that will inform and inspire.

A Handshake from Heaven by Carol S. Bannon – This children’s book shows how the Eucharist allows a child to hold God’s hand. The Mass Explained to Children by Maria Montessori – This is intended for the older child. It presents a clear explanation of the meaning and connection of Communion to the Last Supper. Sharing the Eucharistic Bread: the Witness of the New Testament by Xavier LeonDufour, translated by Matthew J. O’Connell – The author, using Scripture, combines traditions of the Last Supper with practices of the early Christians.

Eucharistic Theology by Joseph M. Powers – A theological discussion and comparison of transubstantiation and transignification.

The Authentic Doctrine of the Eucharist by Teresa Whalen – This book traces the history of Eucharistic doctrine, concentrating on recent developments.

The Eucharist of the Early Christians translated by Matthew J. O’Connell – A collection of ancient writings which describe the Eucharist as it was experienced at various times in history.

Jesus and the Eucharist by Tad W. Guzie – The origins of the Catholic way of celebrating Communion are clearly explained. We can see how the Last Supper shaped the way we live.

BELOVED CHILD OF GOD replace the doubt we now have about our beloved nature as children of God. And soon our whole paradigm on what we want, what we need, what happiness really is, is now perverted and twisted so that it takes a great deal of faith and courage to work our way back to remembering we are the beloved children of God and we are surrounded by his blessings. We have a Father in heaven who is constantly beside us, waiting for us BY DEACON to make the slightest move to open up our life and hearts so he can talk to us about returning to him. We hear TONY PYNES much about repentance or "turning around" in Church We are all loved by God….all people. Each of us is loved and in homilies, but the very first thing we need to turn from long before we were born and we will be loved long around is our false understanding about who we are and after we are gone from this earthly existence. God is love what brings real peace and joy into our lives. and we are his creation. He loves us with a love we cannot even imagine. Just as his thoughts and mind are so much greater than our mind's ability to comprehend, his love is We see people every day who have it all: riches, fame, also greater than we will know. success, who at the first challenge find themselves unable to cope and they give up. Marriages are broken, relationships are destroyed and lives are even lost. Real We truly are all the beloved sons and daughters of our peace, real joy, real love can only begin when we embrace Father in heaven. So the question is, can you imagine what with our hearts what being a beloved child of God means. the world would be like if everyone you met each day were filled with the joy of knowing that no matter what challenges they might face, no matter what losses they I wear on my left wrist a bracelet given to me months might endure, God the Father loves us? ago by a deacon from the Diocese of Rochester. I am getting there and I be like if it was full of people who knew in their heart invite each of you to write down on paper “Beloved Son that God loved them, we know it is hard for many folks to or Daughter of God” and place it where you can see it. Or believe that they are loved so deeply. you might even ask me for the extra bracelets I have. They aren't terribly expensive or well made, but the message is awesome. Their value is that they are something to remind The fact of the matter is that the evil one knows he must us that we are beloved. first convince us that we are not really loved by God; not us, not folks that are so weak or sinful in nature. How could a God who is love, love someone like me? This is the Stop a moment today and remember God's love. Take a first attack men and women face as they are just leaving moment, spend 60 seconds to breathe slowly and just childhood. It is a very successful attack, because while allow yourself to be with God. Remember, you were first convincing us that we are unloveable, we are also offered a child of God before you were born to your parents. You a chance at approval here on earth. Whether the carrot are still that child, loved and honored by your heavenly being held out is money, sex or fame, it is offered to us to Father.

Women Who Followed Jesus

This program, sponsored by Women of Faith Unbound, is hosting a series that explores the history and roles of the faith-filled female disciples in the development and expansion of Christianity. Did you know that St. Thomas of Aquinas called Mary of Magdala “The Apostle to the Apostles” because she was first to proclaim the Good News of Jesus’ resurrection to the other disciples? Did you know that Mary of Bethany sat at Jesus’ feet while he taught, the traditionally reserved seat for male rabbinical students? Or that Mary’s sister Martha is sometimes called a second Peter because she, too, affirms to Jesus, “I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God.” Held at St. Austin’s Parish, all are welcome to attend this series – men, women, students, non-Catholics – anyone interested in learning more about the roles women have played in the Catholic Church over the years. Free parking is available in the St. Austin parking garage at MLK Blvd and San Antonio, and most programs would be from 7:00 to 8:30pm. For more information on upcoming presentations, contact Katie Flahive at KFlahive1@gmail. com or Sharon Bieser at sharonbieser@gmail.com Future topics include: May 26 Protectors of the Environment: Dorothy Stang and Kateri Tekaxwitha July 28 Advocates for Social Justice: Dorothy Day and Mother Teresa September 22 Doctors of the Church: Therese of Lisieux, Catherine of Siena, Hildegard of Bingen October 27 Teresa of Avila, in celebration of the 500th anniversary of her birth
