LADIES AUXILIARY OF THE KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS

The Father McGivney Council 5967 of the Knights of Columbus was chartered at St. Louis on May 9, 1967 and became a vital and important part of the Parish. It wasn’t, however, until August 2, 1983 that a small group met at the home of Lolly Balzer to form a Ladies Auxiliary. Their purpose was to 1) Encourage the members to enrich their spiritual life; 2) Promote a spirit of friendship among the ladies; 3) Give assistance to the Council; and 4) Promote independent programs of the Auxiliary. Membership was and is open to any lady over 18 years of age, Catholic or non-Catholic, whose husband, father, son, brother or sweetheart is a member in good standing of the Council, or a widow or a daughter of a deceased member. Of that original group, we look to Frances Krause as our matriarch. Frances remembers how quickly the Knights turned to the Auxiliary for their participation. Names like Lolly Balzer, Oleta McGuire, Joann Doss, Patty Jistal, Joyce Smith, Dorothy Tierney, Julia Johnson, Rose Stanley, Rita Barrera, Christa Rabago, Dee Benanti, Sharon Daywood, Rosa Trevino-Boiko, Ruth Horvath, Helen Horn, Alice Kubacak, Angela Oxford, Nancy Roddy, Janie Vernengo, Jacky Watkins, Eperanza “Hope” Debo, Dolores Addison, Melissa Fields not only served as Presidents over the years, but quickly became known as Parish Leaders.

the Auxiliary an opportunity to fund many different projects. They ranged from purchasing needed items for the church, school and various ministries – to sponsoring needy families at Christmas – and the controversial purchase of the “Camel” for the Christmas Manger Scene. What made the camel such a controversial subject was that it was very expensive and many felt the money should be dedicated for a more charitable use. Finally the decision was made based on the belief that the “Camel” would be viewed and enjoyed every Christmas for years to come. Thanks to the many “sweet tooths” in the Parish, the Auxiliary was able this year to make the largest distribution of our monies to date - $3,000. The sum was divided into six awards of $500 each to: 1) St. Louis Music Ministry; 2) St. Louis Food Pantry; 3) Dominican Sisters; 4) Mobile Loaves & Fishes; 5) St. Vincent DePaul Society; and 6) Restoration of the St. Louis King of France Statue. In order to help us raise project monies, we hope you will mark your calendar now for the November 18th Thanksgiving Bake Sale which will feature handmade Advent and Christmas Wreaths, the Chapel Icon Cards and a wonderful array of desserts for the holiday.

New members are always welcomed. Recently the Auxiliary The Auxiliary quickly earned a reputation as “Outstanding has been blessed with the addition of a number of younger Bakers” that provided desserts for Knight Events, Lenten Fish members who will bring new ideas and energy to carry on the Fries, and their famous Holiday Bake Sales.
