THE SPIRIT OF ST. LOUIS a weekly bulletin & newsletter November 4, 2018 • 31 th Sunday in Ordinary Time
RELIGIOUS VOCATIONS
T
he word vocation means calling. In particular it is a calling from God to a unique share in the Church’s mission, a personal way of following Jesus. This week is a special time for parishes in the United States to foster a culture of vocations for the priesthood, diaconate, married and consecrated life. This week avails us to the opportunity to speak about the unique gifts God has given us. In doing so, we recognize that God has provided these gifts for the purpose of building His Kingdom and our true fulfillment; attained in discovering and living out faithfully our particular vocation. We invite you to actively enter this discussion and prayer, especially with the youth of our parish. Encourage, Invite and Pray for all vocations, but in particular, vocations to the priesthood and consecrated life. Clerics are ordained for sacred ministry in the Church. Those in holy orders are ordained primarily for sacred ministry. They act in Jesus’ person when they establish the Church by proclaiming the gospel and when they build her
up by serving as teachers of the faith, as celebrants of the Eucharist and ministers of the other sacraments, and as pastoral leaders Religious meet their apostolic responsibility in a distinctive way. Each religious is a person who adopts a distinctive style of Christian life, shaped by the promises of poverty, chastity, and obedience. Lay persons have special responsibility in day to day life. The laity’s primary responsibility is to bear witness by holding fast to the faith, offering their lives as a spiritual sacrifice, and growing in holiness. This is exercised in building holy families through the sacrament of matrimony.
L
a palabra vocación significa llamado.

RELIGIOUS VOCATIONS , continued from cover Sacerdotes y Diáconos.

CATHOLIC SERVICES APPEAL for the Diocese of Austin has kicked off this weekend. Thanks to your generosity in last year’s appeal, St. Louis met 114% of its $197,000 goal, fulfilled by 459 parish donors. Every household is asked to prayerfully consider how you can support the CSA this November. The funds raised will be used specifically for the yearly operating expenses of the diocese in five areas: Clergy Formation, Catholic Education, Life-CharityJustice, Pastoral Ministries to young adults and college campuses, and in Spirituality/Worship with focus on the support of the Catholic retreat centers. If you received a personalized pledge card in the mail, please return it directly to the diocese or place your pledge in the 2nd collection this weekend. General pledge cards/envelopes will be in the pews or tract racks. You can give a one-time gift or make payments over the next 10 months with automatic deductions from a credit or debit card, electronic bank transfers, or checks sent directly to the Diocese on a monthly basis. You can also text a dollar amount to (512) 829-3826. St. Louis Parish was one of eight diocesan parishes randomly chosen to receive $5000 for their participation and support of the Catholic Services Appeal in 2017-2018! Staff members and parishioners joined Fr. Misko to celebrate this blessing from the Diocese of Austin!
No gift is too small or too large! It’s your participation that matters, showing your love for the Church of Central Texas, and offering your support toward the diocesan programs that are greater than any one parish. The fruits of your generosity will change the lives of thousands of people in our diocese. Thank you for your support in this annual appeal!

ST. LOUIS CHAPEL & NARTHEX CELEBRATING 11 YEARS!
August 11 marked the eleventh anniversary of the dedication of the St. Louis Chapel and Narthex in 2007. This project was the culmination of 14 years of vision; planning sessions, consensus building, fundraising and faith including a two-year construction phase that had started in February 2005. Bishop Gregory Aymond presided at the crowded ceremony on that joyful day in 2007. As early as 1993, then Pastor Father Larry Covington, had formed several committees, joint planning ventures with church leaders and contracting firms, as well as meetings for parishioners to voice both their concerns and aspirations for the church’s future. The initial focus was on building a brand new Church building, but that was downsized to expanding the existing Church building which dated from 1970. However, with the downturn in the economy in the late 90’s, those plans evolved again into the construction of a new Chapel and Narthex that would be added to the existing sanctuary. In 2001, Fr. Covington heard of a salvage sale in Philadelphia, where an older Catholic Church of Transfiguration was about to be demolished. He moved quickly to purchase nineteen beautiful stained glass windows that were originally designed and fabricated by the F.X. Zettler Stained Glass Studios, Inc., operating in Munich, Germany in the early 1900’s. These windows had to be painstakingly removed, cleaned, restored and then stored by Beyer Studio, Inc. until we had a building in which to showcase them. “Basically, we required the architects to back up and revamp their plans and build the Chapel around those windows.” Fr. Covington recalls. Fifteen of the windows ended up in the Chapel itself, and the remaining four grace the Adoration Chapel.
Five years after the dedication ceremony, the ceiling above the Altar area became a canvas for a unique painting of Our Lord. In Christian iconography, Christ Pantocrator, is a specific depiction of Christ, translated most commonly as “Almighty” or “All-powerful”. The icon of Christ Pantocrator was one of the first images of Christ developed in the early Christian Church and our apse icon depicts Christ raising his right hand in blessing, while his left hand holds the Gospels. When Fr. James Misko became Pastor in 2014, he commissioned the icons of Divine Mercy and Our Lady of Perpetual Help for the niches on either side of the apse. Together these three icons complement one another and the two most recent icons have offered devotional spaces for visitors to kneel and pray. St. Louis is blessed to have this incredible space that offers a sanctuary of tranquility and peace as soon as one steps through the doors. In a recent homily, Father James Misko offered advice that attendees might well heed: “After ejecting off the Burnet Road turnpike, and wheeling into the church parking lot, as one reaches the Chapel doors…..pause, and take a deep, deliberative breath.” God is present here and you can feel it when you enter our St. Louis Chapel. On this 11th anniversary, we give thanks to the countless parishioners who sacrificed their time and money to make these amazing spaces possible for all of us! Thank you to parishioner John Beyer who initiated this article, reminding us of what a blessing we have in our facilties.

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR ST. VINCENT DePAUL CONFERENCE TREASURER At the annual St. Vincent DePaul Feast Day Mass and celebration, special awards are given to Vincentians within the Austin Diocese in recognition of demonstrating exemplary Vincentian virtues in service to poor and needy neighbors. This year, Bishop Vasquez celebrated the Feast Day Mass on September 15th at San Jose Catholic Church. At the celebration afterward, our St. Louis Church SVdP Treasurer, Bob Padilla, was awarded a Vincentian “Top Hat Award,” a tradition that dates back to the time of our Founder, Frederick Ozanam, who was known to wear a top hat in the style of 19th century Paris. Thank you, Bob, on behalf of all we serve. PHOTO: Bob Padilla, on right, receives his Top Hat Award from Joe St.Clair, president of the SVdP conference at St. Louis Church.

WELCOME CHILDREN CATECHUMENS On October 17, Fr. Doug celebrated the Rite of Acceptance to 16 children now Catechumens of our Parish. Let us pray for them until they become fully initiated in our Catholic faith. May God guide them and be with them in this journey of faith. Congratulations.
FEASIBILITY STUDY Thank you, parishioners! We are grateful for your participation in the recent in-pew survey, and for those parishioners whose in-depth opinions were sought by the CCS Fundraiser. Your comments and opinions are meaningful in the decision-making that will be done going forward. We will keep you posted about the feasibility study report when it is returned to us. While we must go forward with the Capital Campaign for the Diocese in 2019, this feasibility study will help inform us about the scope of our parish campaign that will be run concurrently with the Diocese. Please continue to pray for the clergy and parishioners that will be discerning the goals and plans for the next 50100 years of St. Louis Parish!
SANCTUARY CANDLE MEMORIALS The sanctuary candle is traditionally seen in Catholic churches, burning constantly to indicate the presence of the Blessed Sacrament in the tabernacle. At St. Louis, in both the main nave and the chapel, the sanctuary candles are burning high above the floor in beautifully ornate fixtures suspended from the ceiling. Parishioners are given the opportunity to memorialize a deceased loved one with a $10 contribution, selecting a specified week in which one or both of the two sanctuary candles will be burned in their honor. Visit the church office with your donation, the name of your loved one, your choice of sanctuary candle and the selected week. Memorials are denoted in the Main Nave (M) or Chapel (C). Memorials reserved since the last newsletter deadline include: October 28 – November 3 To Honor Juan J. Alvarez by Nohemi Alvarez (M) Memory of Gene Syrinek by Evelyn Syrinek (C)
November 18 – 24 Memory of Anne Hildebrand by Leonard Friesenhahn (M & C)
November 4 – 10 To Honor Denis Oxford by Angela Oxford (M) Memory of Aloysius Roling by Janice Roling (C)

WOMEN’S CLUB Ever wonder what are the activities behind putting on a radio program? We hear about engineers and producers – what do they do? What guides decisions on what music to play and in what order? If so, join the St. Louis Women’s Club on Wednesday, November 14 to find out. There will be time to ask your own questions. The meeting begins with refreshments at 7:00 PM in Wozniak Hall and will conclude by 9:00. The club is still collecting new underwear and socks for children and adults who are victims of domestic abuse. We will also have our Secret Silent Auction where you can bid on various new or “regifting” items donated by others. In this auction type, a folded bid slip is placed in a container by the item. At the close, the highest bid wins.
