CALLED FORTH – THROUGH DISCERNMENT PASTORAL COUNCIL On Pentecost Sunday, May 20, 2018, the process of calling the newest Pastoral Council members from our community will begin. From its very beginning, the Church has called forth leaders through a discernment rooted in prayer and openness to the Holy Spirit. Thus, although we are unworthy to receive the wisdom of the Father, we rely on his mercy and guidance. What is discernment? Our faith understands discernment as the process of coming to our Heavenly Father and saying “I don’t know the answer.” It is a process that is Spirit-led. It involves prayer and a willingness to be open to the Holy Spirit’s presence and direction in your life and the life of the faith. Through discernment, the council will ask all St. Louis parishioners to examine and acknowledge their gifts from God and ask if they are being called to use those gifts in the service of the parish as parish leaders. How will discernment take place at St. Louis Church? On Pentecost Sunday of each year, the parishioners of St. Louis will be asked to prayerfully discern who they believe God is calling forth as leaders in this faith community. Persons may put forward their own name or the name of someone else. Those whose names have been called forth will be invited to two evenings of discernment where they will further reflect on God’s call as a servant to the St. Louis community. Following these evenings of prayer, current members of the Pastoral Council will consider those called to discern and seek the council of the Holy Spirit to select the new members. What can I do to prepare for this discernment? Pray. Is God calling you to serve this faith community as a member of the Pastoral Council? If the answer may be yes, then give our Father the opportunity to speak to your heart.

For information please contact Donna McClung at dbmcclung@aol.com or (512) 921-8554.

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL

FULLNESS OF TRUTH

Many of you might not know what our parish boundaries are – they run north to Rundberg Lane, south to 45 th Street, west to Mopac, and east to Cameron Road. Within those boundaries live many people who struggle every day to make ends meet. They are faced with skyrocketing rents for even the smallest apartments and high energy bills, while enduring low-paying jobs, lack of affordable daycare, and often the lack of family support. During the month of February, your St. Vincent de Paul Society helped 33 families with rent, utility payments, and other necessities. The members of our ministry did this by home visits to those who have applied to us for assistance. Some were large families, some were individuals, and all of them are our neighbors, all living within our St. Louis Parish boundaries. Think about what it would be like if you had to live with worry every day about how to put food on the table and pay the rent, praying all the time that you don’t get sick because you can’t really afford to be. We are the St. Vincent de Paul Society; we are your representatives, reaching out to the poor in our neighborhood. Every month, we will be sharing with you some stories about our work in this ministry as Vincentians.

Fullness of Truth invites you to their “Why Be Catholic: When You Could Be Anything Else?” conference, at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church in Cedar Park, April 20th & 21st, 2018. Renown speakers include: Dr. Michael Barber (Theology Professor/Augustine Institute & author); Steve Wood (Former Protestant Pastor/Catholic Convert, author, & Founder of St. Joseph’s Covenant Keepers); and, Jim Burnham (Founder St. Juan Catholic Seminars & veteran Catholic apologist). This conference will address the scriptural, logical, and historical reasons for being Catholic: that is, the crucial “Why’s” behind all the “What’s” that we believe. Drawing upon Scripture and Catholic tradition, our presenters will clearly “spell out” true Catholic teaching, and explain the sound rationale behind frequently misunderstood doctrines and practices, thereby providing practicing Catholics a much-needed dose of confidence and clarity to affirm their faith against an increasingly skeptical culture. To register & more details, visit: FullnessOfTruth.org or call toll free: 877.218.7884 or 877.21.TRUTH.

WHY BE CATHOLIC:

When You Could be Anything Else?

2 DECADES OLD

April 20-21, 2018

Ringing out a joyful message each week, this year the bells in the tower celebrate their twentieth year of service to St. Louis Church. Dedicated by Bishop McCarthy on Easter Sunday, April 12, 1998, the seven bells have been pealed before almost every Mass in the Main Nave and many funerals. “Cissy Boyle was the engineer who specified the modifications to the tower to handle the weight of the swinging bells.” J. W. Jones “was a driving force,” recalls Fr. Larry Covington, and “the Dehan Family and the Joseph Family gave the bulk of the funds” for its purchase. Each bell is named after a saint, from St. Louis, St. Joseph, St. Cecilia, St. Mary, St. Joseph, St. Paul, to St. Cyril and Methodius, tuned to the scale of a piano and weighing several tons.

SOCIAL STUDIES & FAITH “I’m teaching the students about the Middle East,” sixth grade teacher Emily Loontjer said to Father James Misko. And before she could even ask, he volunteered, “Do you want me to teach them about the Holy Land?” Father James, having been to the Holy Land several times, offered the sixth-grade class stories and a power point presentation during a class period in March. He compiled information on the politics of Jesus’ time, the history of the Holy Land in the centuries after Jesus and the establishment of the Israeli state in the mid-1900s. The students listened carefully and asked great questions on history, geography, politics, culture and the relationships between Christians, Jews and Muslims. Students also got to see pictures of holy places

central to the story of Christ, like the Annunciation, Nativity and Crucifixion. Mrs. Loontjer called it a divine intervention to have the World Cultures class taught in a way that was both historical and spiritual. “As a teacher, I got so emotional standing in the back of the room,” she said. “Really and truly - it felt so good to see our social studies curriculum come into focus through our faith. We want our faith to collide with every subject we study! Student Abby Shaivitz felt the same way. “I love it when social studies and religion are the same class!” she said.

“ONE JESUS, ONE EUCHARIST” Father James Misko led the penitential rite and the children of Saint Louis Catholic School responded: “Senor, ten piedad; Cristo, ten piedad; Senor, ten pieded.” They responded in Spanish because the Mass was celebrated bilingually for the school’s effort to bring worship in other languages. “Our five-year plan for the school makes a requirement in the curriculum that students have the ability to worship in their own languages,” secondary religion teacher Guillermo Gomez said. “It will help students understand how the Church is universal and form community with others of different languages.” The first ever bilingual student Mass took place on March 9. Father James delivered his homily in English and also stressed the universality of the Church. “Being at Saint Peter’s (Basilica in Rome) was one of the most interesting experiences of my life,” he said. “It showed me how it’s the same Mass, the same body of Christ in every language. We do the Sign of the Cross, the penitential rite, the Eucharistic prayer, but in 25 different languages! The people are praying in Polish, Spanish, French, German, English, and I was so impressed. I thought, ‘Wow! All these different cultures and perspectives!’” Father James asked the children whether they attended Mass in other languages, and the students offered Arabic, Vietnamese, Latin and Filipino dialects besides Spanish. There are plans for the school to bring Mass in these and other languages, including the Nigerian dialect of Igbo. Mr. Gomez said he helped prepare the students for this Mass by using copies of the Spanish missal for the students to practice. He hopes the Mass will be almost entirely in Spanish by next year. Father James ended his homily by saying Jesus is the God of every culture and to remember that in a multicultural Austin. “It’s one Mass,” he said. “Sometimes it happens to be in another language. It’s like the spoke of bicycle. That’s how we are to see all the different Masses in the other languages. We can’t say, “I can’t go to that Mass because it’s in Spanish.” No, it’s one Jesus and one Eucharist.”
