Kudos to St. Louis Parish

The final report was recently released for the diocesan capital and endowment campaign, Our Faith – Our Legacy, launched in the fall of 2006 under the guidance of then Bishop Gregory M. Aymond. The final amount pledged was $84 million which was $39 million more than the original goal of $45 million! Our parish goal of $2,285,000, was the second largest goal assigned to any of the 126 diocesan parishes. The amount that our parish pledged far surpassed any other parish’s pledges for a total of $3,573,807.53. Of those pledges, a total of $3,482,688.56 was collected or 156.40% of goal, making St. Louis the single largest parish contributor to the diocesan campaign!! Thank you to the 1,260 donors from St. Louis Parish that made this possible! Your generosity was a major part of this diocesan campaign’s success!!

HELLO and GOODBYE Rev. George Thirumangalam

St. Louis welcomed Father George Thirumangalam, CMI, in July, as its newest Associate Pastor. Born in India in 1947, he graduated from high school in 1963 and joined the Carmelites of Mary Immaculate as an aspirant to the priesthood. After 14 years of college and seminary studies, he was ordained to priesthood December 28, 1976. Fr. George continued his classes in English language and literature, taking a position as a professor of English at the Kuriakose Elias University, India in 1981, where he served for 18 years. The University is named after the founder of their religious community, who will be canonized by Pope Francis on November 23, 2014. In 1999, Fr. George came to the United States and joined the Diocese of San Angelo, serving assignments in Brady, Stanton, Abilene, and Ft. Stockton parishes before transferring to the Diocese of Austin in 2013. He has been the Pastor of St. Eugene Parish in McGregor and Our Lady of San Juan Mission in Moody. Unfortunately, due to the death of another diocesan priest, St. Louis had to bid farewell to Fr. George before the end of July. With almost 38 years as a priest, and experience as a pastor, he was needed at St. Joseph in Cyclone and its mission parish Sts Cyril and Methodius, Marak. We wish Fr. George well in his new assignment.

Childhood MINISTRy

God has a plan for each one of us!

Do you have a deep love for your faith and desire to share it with others? Here at St Louis Parish, there is a way! During the school year 2013-2014 in Childhood Ministry, about 450 children attended Religious Education classes and 177 of them received the sacraments for the first time. None of this would have been possible without our catechists. Very soon we will begin a new school year. Many children will come to us again with eagerness to learn and to know our Lord better. Jesus asks us to continue his work and that of the apostles, giving His children the water of eternal life through the catechism.

A vocation is a gift from God, because as he said “I have chosen you." When we say yes to God, we know exactly what it means. Yes, means I surrender completely and utterly, without calculating the price, without any analysis or questioning: Is this right? Is it convenient? Our “yes” to God is given without any reservation. The immense love does not measure only gives. Every year we rely on 50-60 people of the parish to pass on the faith to our children. No prior experience is needed. None of

10 Reasons to Become a Catechist

1. It's what we are called to do. Jesus said: "Go, therefore, and make disciples of all na8ons." 2. It's fun. Kids remind adults to live and laugh in the moment and get enthused about things like holy days and stories of saints. 3. You show your family that you value religious educa<on. Taking 8me out of your life to teach the faith shows your family that you put a high priority on religious educa8on. 4. You will be prac<cing stewardship. It’s a way of being a good steward by giving a bit of your most precious resource, your 8me. 5. A catechist is a role model. You get to model behaviors young people might not learn anywhere else. 6. You become an ac<ve part of the most ac<ve part of your parish. You will enter into a community that will support you on your faith journey, pray for and with you and encourage you in your Catholic way of life. Real Life Experiences Why Be a Catechist?

Let the catechists tell you themselves! Below are some anonymous reflections from catechists on favorite moments from their ministry.

10 Reasons to Become a Catechist 7. Your own faith will come alive. As a catechist, you will discover that prayer, liturgy and your own rela8onship with God will become more vibrant and meaningful. 8. Sharing the faith is an honor. It's es8mated that fewer than 1 percent of Catholics are catechists. 9. Catechists tell the truth. The world needs the message of the Gospel and the way to true happiness; as a catechist, you offer a hungry world that sustenance.

“My favorite memory as a catechist is reading to my second grade class about Easter. While reading a children’s book, one of the second graders raises her hand and asks the question, ‘Why did Jesus die for us?’ A second grader is grappling with one of the central mysteries of our faith. Her curiosity, wonder and pure faith moved me and made me want to continue as a catechist for years to come.” “My most recent favorite memory as a catechist is when one of my first communion kids received communion and turned around looked at me and gave me two thumbs up and a big smile.” “The best part of being a catechist is watching students encounter the living God in unexpected ways. As I watched their lives change, I changed, too.”

10. The best way to learn is to teach. The resources and materials you are exposed to as a catechist will surely refresh and expand your own knowledge.

“Let the children come to me and do not stop them, because the Kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” Matthew 19:14

Catechist Appreciation Dinner Catechists are vitally important to the success of our Religious Education Programs. Individuals donate their time and talents to keep our kids close to God. In Childhood Ministry, about 450 children attended Religious Education classes and 177 of them received the sacraments for the first time. None of this would have been possible without our catechists. We sincerely thank them for the time and energy they spend to help us achieve our purposes. To show them our gratitude and appreciation for all the excellent work they have done, Childhood Ministry hosted a Catechist Appreciation Dinner at Blue Banjo on Steck Ave. It was a wonderful evening sharing good food in excellent company.

Fayette Faith

by Coral Migoni-Ryan

On May 15, Father Larry Covington led the seniors from St. Louis and other Catholic churches in Austin on a tour to the remarkable churches of Fayette County. The churches visited were: St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Serbin, St. Michael Evangelical Lutheran Church in Winchester, the United Methodist Church in Winchester, St. James Episcopal Church in La Grange, Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Hostyn, St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Ammannsville, St. Cyril and St. Methodius Catholic Church in Dubina, Church of the Assumption in Praha, and Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin in High Hill. Grateful thanks to Alissa Molina!

For the past twelve years, Alissa Molina has been involved in the youth ministry at St. Louis, two as a volunteer and ten as an employee of the Church. After such a long time, It is hard to quantify the scope of her contribution to the youth and future of the Church. Here is one of the voices of gratitude: Dear Mrs. Alissa, Thank you for your influence on my life and the lives of all the teens you have taught at St. Louis. Every time I get to speak to you, I learn more about life. I can see how you love everyone boundlessly, but most of all your family, especially your beautiful children. Seeing this love you have compels me to love everyone I meet. Your willingness to help everyone also inspires me.Your enthusiasm for our Catholic faith invites everyone to take charge of their faith, and listening to you as you teach has helped me to understand more of what evangelization is. As you move on from actively teaching Confirmation classes, and as yet another group of Seniors prepares to leave high school and start to take on the world, I am glad I have met and learned from you. Thank you for leading me to a better understanding of what exactly it means to be Catholic. In Christ, Robyn Aanstoos

Alissa moved on from the ministry in June to spend more time with her growing family and to take advantage of other ministry opportunities within the Church. Thank you Alissa, we are so thankful for your years of service to this program. "Yet I consider life of no importance to me, if only I may finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to bear witness to the gospel of God’s grace." Acts 20:24

Armchair Pilgrimages and Travel Books in the Parish Library

Summer is synonymous with vacation travel as a way to rejuvenate our spirits and create memories with our friends and families. As Catholics we often choose to travel to holy places where we can connect to God through his landscapes and places built as a memorial to His wondrous deeds. Pilgrimages have a long history in our faith beginning with the pilgrimage festivals of the Jews in the Old Testament. Early Christians had a desire to tread in the footsteps of Jesus, the Blessed Mother, the Holy Apostles, and the tombs of the martyrs. Our patron, St. Louis, fought in the Crusades to keep the holy places open to pilgrims. When travel to the Holy Land was inhibited by Muslim occupation of the Middle East, Christians went on pilgrimage in Europe. Many churches and shrines became destinations for devout Christians. As the exploration of the New World advanced, shrines and holy places were dedicated in South America and North America. Whether you are actually planning a trip or would just like to make a pilgrimage in the comfort of your armchair, the Parish Library has books that can guide you to Shrines and Holy Places all over the world:

following Steve Ray’s, In addition to books the library has the “Footprints of God” location so you can better experience DVDs. This informative series is filmed on the historical places in our Judeo-Christian Heritage.

For the young travelers and history buffs the library has the following:

PRAYER BLANKET MINISTRY This ministry meets on the third Monday from 7:00-9:00pm in members’ homes to create blankets that are lovingly hand-sewn, blessed and then available for sale. The library will have these travel books and more on display during the month of August. Also, check out our Web page for all the books we have added to our collection through May of 2014.

ST. LOUIS BEREAVEMENT MINISTRY This dedicated ministry provides food and comfort to registered parishioner’s families and friends grieving the loss of their loved one. There are several Bereavement teams and each team serves in rotation. Team leaders will call members for food donations to be delivered to a central location. If Wozniak Hall is available and needed, a group leader may also ask for help to set-out food and serve. Those in this ministry are usually called to donate food about two times a year. There are no meetings to attend. Food donations do not have to be homemade. The group leader will have an idea of what food the family needs when calling team members. Funerals are during the day, so there is no night driving. Men and women interested in serving in this ministry can contact Jane Hellinger 512-452-9748 or Frances Krause 512453-4823 or leave your name and number at the Church Office for more information.

Ministries Celebrate our Priests!

T

he St. Louis Women’s Club, Knights of Columbus and the KC Ladies Auxiliary joined together to host a farewell reception for Father Oliver Weerakkody following the 9:30 Mass on June 15. Over 200 parishioners attended the pancake/sausage/egg breakfast prepared by the Knights, and enjoyed refreshments, donuts and muffins provided by the two women’s groups. As we celebrated Father’s Day with our families, we also recognized the nine years of service from this spiritual father. Fr. Oliver left July 2nd for Sri Lanka to enjoy his retirement there surrounded by family and friends.

Special thanks to our Social Media Manager, Christa Almaguer, for the slide show and video shown at Fr. Larry’s reception. If you would like to share your “selfies” taken with either of these priests, please forward them to christa.almaguer@st-louis.org. Christa will compile them and make sure to forward your photos to the honorees, as well as create a memory file of photos that can be accessed on our website.

O

n Saturday, June 28th, the St. Louis Women’s Club, Hispanic Ministries, Knights of Columbus, KC Ladies, Liturgical and Music Ministries, School and Early Childhood, Senior Ministries, Flower Guild and Staff and volunteers from the Church Office, Religious Education and Social Ministry helped put on a memorable farewell reception for Fr. Larry Covington. Hundreds of parishioners, standing room only, were present to honor his 21 years of service in the parish. It was a reception that recognized his impact and influence in every aspect of parish life and celebrated his ministry among us, which was so fruitful! Effective July 1st, Fr. Larry became the new Pastor of St. Theresa Catholic Church. (The JuneJuly newsletter detailed his many accomplishments at St. Louis over two decades.) Cards and farewell notes overflowed the baskets on the gift tables for both these outstanding priests. Donations to the Clerical Endowment (offered at both receptions) will provide spiritual benefits to both priests and financial support for seminarians.

King Louis IX Faith in Action sacred relics that he purchased from the Eastern Emperor at Constantinople. He endowed the Sorbonne College of Theology, approved by Pope Clement IV which became the most famous theological school in Europe.

King Louis IX, was born at Poissy, France in 1214 to King Louis VIII and Queen Blanche of Castille. A member of the House of Capet, Louis was twelve years old when his father died in November 1226. He was crowned king within the month at Rheims Cathedral but because of his youth, his mother ruled France as regent during his minority until approximately 1234. She continued as an important counselor to the king until her death in 1252. On May 27, 1234, Louis married Margaret of Provence and they had eleven children. Although only eight of them lived to adulthood, their lineage continued its power in France for five hundred years. King Louis ruled when the kingdom of France was at its height, both politically and economically. He commanded the largest army and ruled the largest and most wealthy kingdom of Europe, which was the acknowledged center of arts and intellectual thought at the time. The prestige and respect for King Louis IX was due more to his benevolent personality rather than to military domination. For his contemporaries, he was the quintessential example of the Christian prince and his reputation of saintliness and fairness was already well established while he was alive. Louis’ patronage of the arts also inspired much innovation in Gothic art and architecture. His personal chapel, the Sainte-Chapelle in Paris, was built to house the Crown of Thorns and other

The King himself founded a hospital in Paris that had beds for 300 patients. He also received indigent persons daily and personally saw that they were fed. He was known for changing the “King’s court” of his ancestors into a popular court, where he listened to any of his subjects who came with grievances and gave what seemed to them wise and impartial judgments. He replaced the feudal method of settling disputes by combat with peaceful arbitration and the judicial process of trial with testimony. He spent his life crusading for justice, fostering the development of standardized court procedures that helped establish order within his kingdom. He was as much a crusader to promote the common good of his subjects as he was a brave, intrepid warrior fighting the Saracens to free the Holy Land.

tery, Louis was taken prisoner in Egypt and his army ranks were thinned more by disease than by combat. During his captivity the King recited the Divine Office every day with two chaplains and had the prayers of the Mass read to him. After successful negotiations for his liberation, he was released and remained in that region until 1254, fortifying the cities of Acre, Jaffa, Caesarea and Tyre which still remained under Christian rule. King Louis’ second attempt known as the Eighth Crusade was taken when he was in his mid-50’s and successfully liberated thousands of Christian captives in the Holy Land, but sadly he died in Tunis on August 25, 1270. He was traditionally believed to have died from the bubonic plague but the cause is now thought by modern scholars to have been dysentery. Unable to speak on his last morning, history notes that at three in the afternoon he said, “Into Thy hands I commend my spirit” and quickly breathed his last. His bones and heart were taken back to France and kept enshrined in the abbey-church of St. Denis, until they were scattered at the time of the French Revolution.

King Louis had a reputation of being a man of prayer, entirely devoted to his people and the spread of Christianity.
