THE SPIRIT OF ST. LOUIS a weekly bulletin & newsletter July 1, 2018 • 13 th Sunday in Ordinary Time

WELCOME BACK FATHER JESSE MARTINEZ! Effective July 1, St. Louis Church will welcome back Father Jesse Martinez as a Parochial Vicar for the parish! Previously, the newly ordained Deacon Jesse was assigned to spend the summer here in June 2016, being one of five transitional deacons who had been ordained May 21 of that year. Parishioners got to know and love him as a seminarian, so it’s with joy that we welcome him back as a seasoned priest with one year of service behind him. Ordained to Priesthood, June 3, 2017, along with our Father Doug Jeffers, Father Jesse’s first year as a priest was spent at St. Elizabeth’s in Pflugerville. Father Jesse is a graduate of the Pontifical College Josephinum in Columbus, Ohio. He is the oldest of two children and grew up in Caldwell, a small town outside College Station. He first began to think about priesthood when he was about four years old, pretending to say Mass. Growing up, he was an altar server and active in his parish youth group, entering the seminary after high school. Raised in a Czech community, Father Jesse learned more Czech than Spanish, but he will be a wonderful addition to our clergy team, serving both the English and Spanish communities of St. Louis. His primary duties this first year will be as the Vicar for Liturgical Ministries, working in collaboration with staff members Elizabeth Polito and Carrie Vernieuw. He will also be the Vicar for Youth Ministry, Young Adults and Co-Vicar for Hispanic Ministries, along with participating in all St. Louis School activities. Please keep Fr. Jesse in your prayers and all our diocesan priests in transition during the summer months.

SANCTUARY CANDLE MEMORIALS The sanctuary candle is traditionally seen in Catholic churches, burning constantly to indicate the presence of the Blessed Sacrament in the tabernacle. At St. Louis, in both the main nave and the chapel, the sanctuary candles are burning high above the floor in beautifully ornate fixtures suspended from the ceiling. Parishioners are given the opportunity to memorialize a deceased loved one with a $10 contribution, selecting a specified week in which one or both of the two sanctuary candles will be burned in their honor. Visit the church office with your donation, the name of your loved one, your choice of sanctuary candle and the selected week. Memorials are denoted in the Main Nave (M) or Chapel (C). Memorials reserved since the last newsletter deadline include: July 1 – 7 In memory of Maria Del Socorro & Rafael Mata by Socorro Mata (M) July 8 – 14 In memory of Francisco Salinas Jr. by Virgencia Jaramillo (M) July 15 – 21 In memory of M/M Valente Lopez by Rodriguez & Lopez Family (M) July 22 – 28 In memory of Eduardo Alvarez by Nohemi Alvarez (M) July 29 – August 4 In memory of Jandi Sutedja by the Family (M & C)

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY TRUCK AND THRIFT STORE

The St. Vincent dePaul Society truck will be in the south parking lot of the church on Saturday, July 14th, from 10am - 2pm, rain or shine. Please donate your gently used clothing, household items, sports equipment, small furniture, books and magazines, children’s items, and so on, to the St. Vincent de Paul Society. Please help us to help others! The truck was to have visited us on June 2nd; however, due to Confirmation being held at St. Louis that day, we had to postpone the truck’s visit. And if you are out shopping for your summer needs, come and visit the SVDP Thrift Store to get some great bargains! The store is located at 901 W. Braker, just off Lamar. It’s open MondaySaturday from 10am-7pm. Lots of parking available. Come visit!

PLANNING MARRIAGE SOON? The Sacrament of Marriage involves many steps, but your faith community is here to assist you. The Diocese of Austin recommends you approach your parish of registration (or residence) at least 6-9 months in advance of an intended wedding date. Even more lead time is needed if you are being married out-of-state or out-of-country. For marriages in other states/ countries, completed marriage files must be sent a minimum of three months in advance because they must go through diocesan tribunals for approval, both in Austin and in the diocese where the wedding is to take place. Sacramental preparation involves sessions with clergy and participation of the couple in a structured marriage prep program, either here or sponsored by the Diocese of Austin. While you don’t have to be a member to marry here, it is the support and tithes of our generous parishioners who make our marriage programs and facilities possible. For more information on preparing for marriage at St. Louis, visit www.st-louis.org/marriage July 1, 2018 13th Sunday in Ordinary Time

HOW IS THE ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY FUNDED? 2nd Sunday, Second Collection: Our work at the St. Vincent de Paul Society at St. Louis Catholic Church is funded in several ways. First, at Masses on the 2nd Sunday of every month, a second collection is taken for our parish Social Ministries. Social Ministries distributes a portion of all the monies received and some parishioners designate the SVdP Society as their donation recipient. Donation Checks: We also receive donation checks from parishioner benefactors and former parishioners. These come to us through the mail at the Church address, or in the collection baskets on any Sunday, or via the four poor boxes located in the vestibule of the main church, and the box next to the door of the main church on the north side of the building leading to the main parking lot. Donations also come to us from parish organizations such as the Knights of Columbus, the women in the Prayer Blanket ministry, and the KJZT Society. Our Members: Our parish SVdP group meets every Tuesday in the Social Ministries building, and on the first Tuesday of the month, we circulate the black bag among ourselves, and members are encouraged to donate. Austin Energy: Through Plus 1, Austin Energy funds more than 40 “partners” in Austin with a specified allocation, which is used to help those in financial difficulty to assist them with their utility bill. Our SVdP group is one of those partners. We apply for renewal in this program annually and have been successful for seven years. We manage the allocation of the funds ourselves, and we are expected to distribute the money as evenly as possible over the course of the financial year, since the funding is released to us on a quarterly basis. As you can imagine, this greatly expands our ability to help people who live in our parish boundaries. We can use Plus 1 funds to help them with their utility bills without always having to use the money we have received, as detailed above. This allows us to provide more help to those needing assistance with other necessities, especially rent. You! We never forget the blessings our SVdP group receives through the kindness and generosity of you, our parishioners, through your donations via the Social Ministries collections, the poor boxes, through parish organizations, and of course, the gift cards you so generously provide to us through the Advent Giving Trees. We could not do any of this without your support; please know you are making a difference in peoples’ lives.
