“A Man knows when he has found his vocation when he stops thinking about how to live and begins to live.” ― Thomas Merton

“A tree gives glory to God by being a tree. For inSpirit being what The of St. Louis God5 means it to be it is obeying [God]. It “consents,” so to speak, to [God's] creative love. Books by Merton which accompany Fr. Misko’s talks:

Perhaps the central theme of all of Merton’s writings is contemplation. What he stressed over and again in regard to this crucial practice is that it is not the exclusive preserve of spiritual athletes, but rather something that belongs to all the baptized and that stands at the heart of Christian life. For contemplation is, in his language, “to find the place in you where you are here and now being created by God.” It is consciously to discover a new center in God and hence at the same time to discover the the pointheart of connection to everyone and everything else in the between cosmos. our real and At of Merton’s spirituality is his distinction -Bishopselves. FAITH FAMILIES

We are excited to engage our student body as a whole this year through Faith Families. Each Faith Family consists of students ranging from Pre-K to 8th grade. Faith families this year are named after Saints and will learn about their Saint through the course of the year. Each week through our new positive reinforcement program, students may earn tickets for doing good deeds throughout the day. The Faith Family with the most tickets at the end of the week is named Faith Family of the Week and gets to sit together at the front of the church for our School Mass that week. Our middle school students are great examples to our primary students. Each year our 7th grade and Pre-K, 8th grade and Kindergarten partner up in our buddy program where our older students serve as role models for our younger students. They accompany each other to church, assist with classroom activities, and celebrate holiday parties. At the beginning of each year, they share a couple of days together where they have the opportunity to get to know each other as the year begins. We are looking forward to seeing these positive changes in our Faith Families!

SANCTUARY CANDLE MEMORIALS

FOR THE YOUNG AT HEART

The sanctuary candle is traditionally seen in Catholic churches, burning constantly to indicate the presence of the Blessed Sacrament in the tabernacle. At St. Louis, in both the main nave and the chapel, the sanctuary candles are burning high above the floor in beautifully ornate fixtures suspended from the ceiling. Parishioners are given the opportunity to memorialize a deceased loved one with a $10 contribution, selecting a specified week in which one or both of the two sanctuary candles will be burned in their honor.Visit the church office with your donation, the name of your loved one, your choice of sanctuary candle and the selected week. Memorials are denoted in the Main Nave (M/N) or Chapel (C). Memorials reserved since the last newsletter deadline include:

Worshipping GOD THOUGH Music “After silence, that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible is music.” This great quote by Aldous Huxley helps to explain what we do in worship each week at St. Louis King of France Church, which is to define the indescribable. Whether it is a peal of hand bells at the 5pm Saturday vigil, a solemn and comforting Taizé melody at the 7:30am Mass, a Tallis motet or an energetic children’s choir at the 9:30 Mass, a jubilant cantos in Spanish at the 1:30 or 5:30pm Masses, or an ancient Gregorian chant at the Compline Sunday night service, the Music Ministry at St. Louis has much richness to offer the People of God and for the worship of God. “Without deviation from the norm, progress is not possible.” -Frank Zappa Using the vast array of music from the last two millennia, the Music MInistry is also looking to the future. The promotion of Rick Gabrillo to Director of Sacred Music and the hiring of Scott McNulty as Organist are already bringing about some exciting changes! We are debuting a new concert series, The King’s Concerts, which began in September with a performance of music by the legendary composer, Josquin des Prez. This season opening performance was presented by the outstanding vocalists who also serve as our magnificent section leaders for the 9:30am Mass. We will also be giving new names to several of our ensembles: the St. Louis King’s Choir (9:30 am), Cecilia Singers (11:30 am), Ambrose Ringers (handbells). Familiar names, like the St. Louis Children’s Choir, Angel Choir (toddlers through 1st grade and their parents), Coro Immanuel (1:30 pm), and Coro Nueva Alianza (5pm), will remain the same, and these ensembles will continue to offer their same high quality of music, deeply respected throughout the diocese. To make all of this happen, it literally takes an army of people, professionals and novices, younger and older, to make it happen. We invite you to share your gifts of time and talent by joining one of our many ensembles. Director of Sacred Music, Rick Gabrillo, and the whole music staff are eager to welcome you to our ministry. To get started, please contact Rick at rick.gabrillo@st-louis.org, or call (512) 454-0384. You will be glad you did! Are you interested in supporting these valuable ministries with a financial gift? You are invited to show your appreciation for all of the beautiful music this church offers by joining the Friends of St. Louis. There are many ways one can invest in the Music Ministry, and a few examples include sponsoring the brass ensemble at Christmas, supporting a section leader for a year, or purchasing music for a choir. In addition to being a crucial sustainer of the various music ministries of St. Louis, becoming a member of The Friends of St. Louis also includes invitations to special receptions at the rectory, preferred seating for concerts, and the exciting opportunity to personally meet the musicians in exclusive events. To get started, please contact Scott McNulty at scott. mcnulty@st-louis.org or call (512) 454-0384. “Blow the trumpet at the new moon…on the day of our festival (Psalm 81:3).” Praise the Lord!

Rediscover the Rosary in October at the Parish Library

October 7th is the feast day of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary. This feast was established by Pope St. Pius V to commemorate the victory of the Christian fleet over the Ottoman Turks at the Battle of Lepanto – a miraculous naval victory that occurred on October 7, 1571. Prior to that victory there had been a campaign to pray the Rosary throughout Europe. The last three popes of our day have echoed that appeal to pray the Rosary. During the feast of the Assumption 2016, Pope Francis said, “Mary joins us, she fights at our side. She supports Christians in the fight against the forces of evil. Especially through prayer, through the Rosary…” Pope Benedict XVI, in his October 7th 2012 Angeles address, said, “With the Rosary we allow ourselves to be guided by Mary, model of faith, in meditating on the mysteries of Christ, and day after day we are helped to assimilate the Gospel, so that it shapes all our lives.” Pope John Paul II, aware of the turbulent times the world was facing at the beginning of the third millennium, asked his fellow clergy to promote praying the Rosary. The Parish library has many books, audio CDs, and DVDs about the Rosary. You can pray the Rosary with Popes Francis and J.P.II, meditate on Scriptures, or view the actual places in the Holy Lands where the mysteries took place. There is something in this collection to help you invigorate and rediscover this great devotion! Here is a small sample:

Responding to the Pope’s Apostolic Letter In an age when self -help methods abound on the Rosary, his five new “Luminous and meditation is a common prescriptive, Mysteries”, and declaration of 2003 as “The Garry Wills, one of the most respected Year of the Rosary”, Fr. The Women’s Club hosted the July Deaneries meeting and complementary brunch at Our Lady Maronite Catholic Church. Msgr. Don Sawyer talked about the origins and some of the traditions of this Eastern branch of the Catholic Church that is in communion with Rome. In the picture Msgr. Don shows the vestments worn at Mass, which are very different from those of the Roman church. Information about the quarterly Deaneries meetings is posted in the Sunday bulletin. Join other St. Louis ladies at St. Theresa’s for the October 15 live auction.

Women’s Club Secretary Patsy Alvarez (l) and member Alice Kubacak (r) attended the Rural Life Mass in West, an annual event sponsored by the Diocesan Council of Catholic Women to honor farmers and ranchers. Bishop Danny Garcia was the Mass celebrant.

This city-wide program continues to meet on Wednesday mornings from 9:30-11:30am in the St. Louis sanctuary. This weekly two-hour Bible study consists of prayer, small group discussions and guest speakers and is open to both men and women. The 2016-2017 study on the Book of Isaiah by R. Around the Diocese and beyond Respect Life and World Mission Month October is both Respect Life and World Mission Month and the Diocesan Offices of Missions and Pro-Life Activities are working collaboratively to promote the dignity of every human life from conception until natural death, while cultivating awareness and support for the mission territories of the Catholic Church that provide a spiritual home for the poorest and most vulnerable. The Respect Life Program begins the weekend of October 1-2 with the theme “Moved by Mercy.” As we continue in this Jubilee Year of Mercy, Pope Francis invites us to open our hearts and be merciful to others because God has shown us mercy first. Bishop Vasquez has asked us to continue as agents of mercy, “praying for the conversion of all people to safeguard the inherent dignity and value of every human life.” In addition, the 90th observance of World Mission Sunday will take place on October 23. Our local church will join brethren around the world by means of our prayers and financial help, through the special collection for the Propagation of the Faith, to support the work of missions, its witness to Christ and service to the poor. One of the major ways we can support the missionary works of the universal Church is to participate in this annual collection. Your generosity is greatly appreciated that weekend!

HELP PROMOTE RESPECT LIFE IN OCTOBER! The 2016 Baby Bank Campaign is ongoing during October. This annual fund is intended to support the various projects sponsored by the Diocesan Office of ProLife Activities, including Gabriel Project, Project Rachel, Pro-Life Help Line, Sidewalk Ministry, awareness and education and additional support for parochial Pro-Life ministries as needed. Our parish Gabriel Project ministry will benefit, too, from 50% of the funds collected. Families are asked to collect loose change during October, Respect Life Month, and then return your Baby Banks to the parish October 29-30. If you missed getting a Baby Bank, then use any box that can be a daily reminder of your support for all life issues! Your donations will help pro-life efforts in our parish and diocese!

Catholic Service Appeal

COMING NOVEMBER 5-6 Since 1978, the Catholic Services Appeal (CSA) has provided millions of dollars toward the needs of the Diocese of Austin. Annual support from Catholics throughout Central Texas allows the diocese to continue the ministry of Jesus. November marks the beginning of the Catholic Services Appeal for the year ahead. Your generosity will help do the following: • Provide support for the poor and needy through Catholic Charities of Central Texas. • Sustain thousands of students and teachers in our Catholic schools. • Educate and form our seminarians as they journey to ordination. With 44 seminarians in formation, 52% of the appeal goes toward the education, formation and care of our priests and seminarians. • Help thousands of families and individuals receive catechetical and leadership training, liturgical resources and much more. Last year’s successful appeal received a record $5.8 million in pledges from more than 22,000 families around the diocese. St. Louis Parish certainly did its part, surpassing its $155,000 goal by 124%, receiving $191,767 in pledges and $143,013 in payments (as of July 2016). Thank you to the 535 parish families that participated last year! We hope 100% of our parishioners will consider donating even a small pledge this year to the CSA. Pledge cards will be available the first weekend of November in the pews. Thank you for prayerfully considering what you can spare to support our Church of Central Texas. Together our gifts can make a big difference to our local Church and its outreach to the community!

Remember the Cry Room! Although we love our infants and toddlers and the “music” they make, please remember that what may be music to one person’s ears, can be distracting to another. If your little tyke begins to “sing” during Mass, please exit quickly and introduce your child to the Cry Room. It’s often difficult to hear in our Church, even when there are no background noises, so be considerate of others and remove your little one as promptly as possible! Due to the Cry Room’s size, just one adult should accompany the child, so there’s room for more future choir members! THANK YOU!!!

Planning Marriage in the Future? The Sacrament of Marriage involves many steps, but your faith community is here to assist you. While you don’t have to be a member to marry here, it is the support and tithes of our generous parishioners that make our marriage programs and facilities possible. Consequently, fees for the rental of facilities are assessed according to parishioner or nonparishioner status. If you have been a registered member and documented giver (through checks or envelopes) for at least six months before coming in to plan a future wedding, you will be eligible for the discounted parishioner rate at a savings of $600. Call our Church Office for more information on this and all questions related to the marriage preparation process (512) 454-0384.
