• Our endowment reached $40 million for the first time in our history.

Mark Davis James Andersen Head of School Chair, Board of Trustees

• The Class of 2021 Senior Gift raised almost $1 million for Financial Aid.

An important marker of a school’s health is financial stability. In this report, you will see that the health of St. Luke’s is excellent. In this year like no other before it, in the midst of a global pandemic, when the campus was closed to all but students, faculty and staff, our community collectively contributed $5 million to St. Luke’s. Some of the financial accomplishments of the past year included:

he 2020-2021 school year brought us unprecedented challenges and satisfying achievements.

We believe strongly in the quality and value of a St. Luke’s education, and we are proud of the opportunities presented to each student. To be clear, this unique student experience at St. Luke’s School would not be possible if not for the passionate support of our wider community.

Emboldened by this singular focus on delivering an exceptional education, St. Luke’s was “open for business” all year, placing us in an enviable position relative to other area schools. Our faculty and staff have never been as tested as they were in this school year and we have never been so proud to be their colleagues.

• An alumnus of the Class of 1950 gave $1 million to our endowment because in his words “When I needed it, St. Luke’s changed my life.”

• Three new endowments were established for civil discourse, design-based learning and faculty development (see pages 42-44), and a $500,000 refurbishment for the Seldin Performing Arts Center and the Wyckoff Black Box Theatre was funded.

With input from health experts, the State of Connecticut, our trustees, and faculty and staff, we made the decision to offer in-person instruction to all students every day. We also determined that a live zoom option was essential to offer as well.

In the summer of 2020, we faced the daunting task of thoughtfully and safely planning our school’s reopening. Throughout, we remained focused on one goal: doing what’s best for our students.

ANNUAL REPORT 2020-21 | 5

T

As the 2020-2021 school year ended, we experienced the annual ritual of the “beautiful sorrow” of saying good-bye to our Class of 2021 graduates while at the same time looking forward to the future with enthusiasm and excitement. This is a special time for St. Luke’s and the two of us are proud to be a part of it with all of you.

Message from the Head of School and Board Chair

In the pages that follow, we are pleased to highlight the stories of a few St. Luke’s families and friends, whose contributions are creating pathways for students now and into the future. It is this humble generosity and deep commitment to our mission that allows St. Luke’s to be the kind of place that it is today—a place where our faculty members are deeply committed to the success of their students, our parents are cooperative partners in all that we do, and our alumni are ready to lend a hand when needed.

• Our Annual Fund exceeded its dollar goal and parent participation reached 92%.

With sincere gratitude,

In the years since Bob left the Hilltop, the campus has expanded its facilities, become co-ed (1971) and grown from 171 students K-12 to nearly 600 students in grades 5-12. Bob is thrilled by how far St. Luke’s has come. He remains active at St. Luke’s today, and recently served on the alumni advisory group that helped appoint Mary Halpin Carter, Ph.D. as the next Head of School.

“A school, to be successful on a long-term basis, needs the active involvement of alumni.”

ANNUAL REPORT 2020-21 | 17

School for Sale

St. Luke’s School has always held a special place in Bob Salomon’s life. He first came to the Hilltop at the recommendation of family friend Peter Weiller ’52. At the time, the school was privately owned and had very few facilities, save some classrooms and a football fi eld. Bob laughed when reminiscing on his time as football captain: “We played on the upper fi eld, and the upper fi eld was short So every time you crossed the 50-yard line you had to back up 20 yards— that’s just the way it was!”

Bob attended Amherst College and then went to work for the US Trust Company, where he became Chief Investment Offi cer. Afterwards, he was asked to start a stock research department at Salomon Brothers. There, he built a long career as a strategist and ran the asset management side of the business. In 1972, he was approached by two St. Luke’s parents who were concerned about the future of the school. “I was part of a group of people who bought the school for $1”, Bob recalls, “After we bought it, we were so hard up for money that we would invite parents in groups of 10 to come and hear what was going on in the school, and we kidded them that we were going to lock the door until they made a pledge”. Today, the fundraising team takes a slightly diff erent approach!

WHY I GIVE Bob Salomon ’55

Supporting the St Luke’s Community

Why He Gives

In 2020, Bob decided to co-sponsor a generous matching challenge for St. Luke’s Giving Tuesday. When asked what motivated him to give, Bob replied, “I made a challenge gift because I believe that the long-term success of any independent private school is dependent on an active and supportive alumni constituency.” For Bob, alumni involvement is absolutely key, and he hopes to inspire future generations to similarly give back and reconnect with St. Luke’s.

The Annual Fund is the heart and soul of the St. Luke's fundraising effort. Unrestricted tax-deductible gifts to the Annual Fund provide essential funding to bridge the gap between tuition and the actual cost of educating our students. As an independent school, St. Luke's receives no federal or state funding, so philanthropic contributions are vital.

I give because it is foundational to my family's philosophical views. I give because no matter how much we have, we have an obligation to support others and think about how that is possible. I give because I am restored beyond measure when I know I can have a positive impact on someone else. I give because doing so moves the community forward.

ANNUAL REPORT 2020-21 | 55

Tim Cantrick, Former St. Luke’s School Director of College Counseling

In Memory of Dick Whitcomb

During Mr. Whitcomb’s 41 years at St. Luke’s (and nearly 20 additional years after his retirement), he was a fixture on the Hilltop – seeking out, lifting up, and advocating for students and teachers. Mr. Whitcomb found something special and unique to celebrate in every individual, and when he spoke to you, you felt like the only person in his world.

The St. Luke’s community mourns the loss of our former coach, mentor, teacher, colleague, and beloved Headmaster Emeritus, Richard M. Whitcomb. Mr. Whitcomb passed away on July 6, 2021 at the age of 85 after a long, hard-fought battle with cancer. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Barbara, son Jon ‘83 and his wife Rachel, daughter Andrea ‘83; grandchildren: Victoria ‘20, Joseph, Shannon, Richard, Elizabeth, Emily, and Harrison.

“If history records the big things (the school we see around us today), and individuals recall the small things (the thousand memories of this man inscribed on each of our hearts), it’s not likely that either will ever forget Richard Whitcomb.”

Mr. Whitcomb’s love and devotion shaped the culture and community of St. Luke’s School in countless ways. His impact and memory are alive on the Hilltop.

A memorial service for Mr. Whitcomb was held on July 15, 2021 at St. Aloysius Church in New Canaan. He was also remembered at a memorial service on campus during St. Luke’s Homecoming festivities in October of 2021. At that time, Head of School Mark Davis announced that St. Luke's has formally renamed the Athletic Hall of Fame in Mr. Whitcomb’s honor. The Richard M. Whitcomb Athletic Hall of Fame is a tribute to Mr. Whitcomb, his passion for athletics, and his innumerable contributions to the St. Luke's community.

MacKenzie was grateful to be given the opportunity: “It is such an honor to be a part of the Jr. NBA experience. Going to the Jr. NBA is a once in a lifetime experience. However, I got the opportunity to go twice. Now, on top of that, I get to be a part of this leadership group. This is an amazing experience and a tremendous honor to be selected from among many other great players.”

The Jr. NBA Court of Leaders provides promising young men and women with the resources to develop as leaders and a platform to amplify their voices within their communities and across the youth basketball landscape.

STUDENT HIGHLIGHTS

Marguerite shared that her interest in the French language started when she was about six years old. Her brotherʼs teacher was from New Orleans and told her the name Marguerite was French for daisy. That immediately sparked her interest in learning more about the language. At St. Lukeʼs, she was able to learn the language officially. “I am so grateful to have been able to pursue my passion,” Marguerite said.

Marguerite DeMarco was awarded the prestigious American Society of the French Academic Palms Scholarship, a sought after annual award granted to one American high school student with an enduring and deep interest in the French language and Francophone cultures.

MacKenzie Nelson was selected as one of 10 girls for the inaugural Jr. NBA Court of Leaders, an NBAsponsored leadership council for 15-and 16-year-old basketball players. The Storm guard impressed spectators on and off the court while playing for her AAU basketball team, Empire State Blue Flames, at the Jr. NBA Global Championship in 2019.

The award allowed Marguerite to spend four weeks in Paris, Aix en Provence, Brittany, and the French Alps, studying French culture and language. The program is fully immersive, so she spoke French throughout her stay and lived with a host family.

Dreams came true this summer for two St. Luke’s faculty members: Head of MS Curriculum and Special Programs Jen Pokorney and MS Math Teacher Jay Blau.

SHADOWS ON 340 by Sean Lynch

"This painting is based on a photograph that I took at a house in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. I am drawn to light and shadow on surfaces so the shadow of the railing on this set of stairs and the porch fascinated me. While the painting looks realistic, I tried to emphasize the linear and abstract nature of the composition"

Jay also plans to fulfill his travel dreams. He will embark on a quintessential American road trip to reconnect with his passions of music, art, food, baseball, nature, and people. He plans to explore California, Seattle, Austin, and New Orleans, see museums in New York City, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Wrigley Field in Chicago, and the Field of Dreams in Iowa, before wrapping up his trip with old friends in Miami.

Jen will be heading West with her family in an RV. Beginning in her home state of South Dakota and travelling to the Redwoods of California, coastal Oregon, or the Grand Canyon, Jen looks forward to exploring with no specific destination, finding peace in nature and taking the time to reflect along the way.

Upper School Art Chair Sean Lynch’s artwork was selected from among a record-breaking number of submissions to the National Art Education Association Member Exhibition. Eight art leaders juried 614 submissions and selected just over 90 pieces for the final exhibition. Sean’s piece, Shadows on 340, is available for online viewing as part of the 2020 NAEA Member Member Exhibition.

2021 COMMENCEMENT

60 | ST. LUKE'S SCHOOL

Saturday, June 5, was a beautiful day on the Hilltop, when family, friends, faculty, and staff gathered to celebrate the Class of 2021. Head of School Mark Davis captured the feeling of the day, remarking: “Today, we celebrate with a joy almost impossible to describe, given the year from which we have begun to emerge; a joy so different from what the St. Luke’s Class of 2020 experienced; an in-person commencement that reminds us of the joy of being ... simply ... together.”

Davis shared a personal comment about each of the 88 graduates – a beloved tradition at St. Luke’s School. “At St. Luke’s, where we value the individual you, not just the collective you, each one of you has mattered in distinctive and powerful ways. The faculty and I have loved watching you contribute, prosper, and grow up before our eyes here on the Hilltop. We will remember you and miss you terribly.”

COMMUNITY HIGHLIGHTS

The Class of 2020 Cardio and Fitness Mezzanine is home to six Peloton Bikes generously donated by the Barkley family. The cardio zone has two treadmills, two ellipticals, two rowing machines, and two additional exercise bikes for the St. Luke’s students and faculty to enjoy.

A COMPLETE TRANSFORMATION WELLNESS & FITNESS CENTER OPENS

The revolution of change that has transformed the St. Luke’s campus continued this year with the unveiling of the new Wellness and Fitness Center. The reimagined space includes a new weight training zone, a cardio-specific training area, a two-story rock climbing wall, a new viewing area for squash, a running ramp, and a turf training area.

ANNUAL REPORT 2020-21 | 61
