The discipline of Library and Information Sciences is undergoing rapid changes. Though the development and the growth of libraries are steady and it is age old, the discipline of library science is relatively young and fast changing. There are more than two hundred journal titles in the field. Now almost all of them are joining the band wagon of online journals and have their own websites. What use to take months to get the research papers published is now just a touch away? We are in the most fascinating era of journal publications. The peer review process is automatic and the originality can be tested with help of plagiarism software like Turnitin and ithenticate. Preparation of references use to be a herculean task , now it is made easy because of the freely available on line reference management soft ware like BibMe, etc. The manuscripts can be tracked to know when they are likely to get published. All this happens in front of the Internet and on our desk top. All this is for free and sometimes we have to pay a fee to get it published. The starting of the Journal of Advancements in Library Sciences (JoALS) both is very timely. It focuses on including the research papers on fundamental research in all areas of Advancements in Library Sciences. The scope and coverage of the journal is within the spectrum of Library and Information Science. The topics covered are: Collection, Organization, Preservation, and Dissemination of Information Resources; Digital Libraries, and Digital Repositories; Statistics and Management; Types of Libraries - Their Resources and Preservation; Information and Interdisciplinary Research; Data Digitization in Libraries. Online References Management System: An Examination into BibMe Khaiser Nikam*, Umesha M L DLIS, University of Mysore, Mysore, Karnataka, India Abstract This paper is on online Reference Management System, called BibMe which supports the researchers in compiling of bibliographical references for writing papers, thesis and books. The procedure to search on the home page of BibMe is easy, automatic and simple. It is quick and standardized way to prepare bibliographical references using different referencing styles like APA, MLA and so on. The screen shots are collected from the home page of BibMe and the procedure to use them is carefully explained for the benefit of the researchers. This work will be useful for beginners of the users of referencing systems. Other models like Zotero are not dealt with here; the scope is restricted to only to one type automatic biblo making system called BibMe.

Opinion of Young Adults towards Extension Activities of Public Libraries in Karnataka: A Study Khaiser Nikam1*, Jayakumara2 1

Abstract This paper examines the young adults opinion towards extension activities of public libraries in Karnataka, the purpose of the study is to know the demographic characteristics of young adult public library (YAPL) users and their opinion about the academic and cultural activities of public library. The structured questionnaire was designed and distributed randomly to 1680 users between 15 to 40 years of age out of which 1021 filled-in questionnaires were received representing 60.77%. The result of the survey shows that about 420(41.1%) respondents were between 21–25 year of age, nearly 775(77.6%) of users were male, majority scoring 825(83.4%) of young adults were unmarried and more number accounting 454(44.5%) of respondents visit the library daily. The chi-square value shows that there is significant difference are observed between the frequency of responses of young adults towards academic and cultural activities of public library, where majority of users were in disagreement side and they are not satisfied with extension activities of public libraries in Karnataka.

Assessing Cataloging Curriculum Offered by LIS Program in Malaysia Nurulannisa Abdullah*, Zuraidah Abd Manaf, Hamidah Abd Rahman Universiti Teknologi MARA, Malayasia

Abstract The cataloguing courses offered vary in Library and Information Science (LIS) Programs in Malaysia. With the fast technological change, faculties are responsible in giving the most appropriate learning education in preparing their students with skills and competencies as well as ensuring what students need to know to do their jobs well. The objectives of this study are to identify the current practice of teaching and learning of cataloguing course in LIS program in Malaysia, to investigate the relevance of cataloguing course as perceived by educators toward professional career, to discover the required elements to improve the cataloguing courses offered and to identify the required skills and competencies of cataloguer in this technological era as perceived by the educators. A multiple case study approach is undertaken to identify the nature, level, and status of teaching cataloguing courses in five LIS programs in Malaysia. The interviews, document analyses as well as observations are used as methods for data collection. The findings from these cases lead the researcher to generate the factors for improvement of cataloguing course framework. In summary, current practice, educators’ perceptions toward professional career, elements for improvement and required competencies as factors in improving the cataloguing courses in all LIS programs in Malaysia. The findings also demonstrate that cataloguing is still relevant and will continue to be taught, and that it remains a core course even with the advent of information communication and technology (ICT) that revolutionized information organization in the past decade. The results of the study have provided input to the LIS programs in Malaysia in reviewing the course contents, examined the course offering as well as described teaching philosophy since the technology changes and give impact to the world of librarianship nowadays.

Abstract Cloud computing provides many opportunities for libraries to offer services to users in innovative ways. Cloud computing is user-centric, task-centric, powerful and is always accessible. These features of cloud computing offer many opportunities for libraries to reshape their services. At the same time, libraries should also give attention to many issues that come up when cloud computing is employed in library environment. Libraries should invest a lot of thinking before experimenting with cloud computing. This paper intends to examine the opportunities that cloud computing – a technological development – has brought in and the issues that it may bring along with it when adopted in library environment.

Deep Web Harnessing Tools Mudasir Khazer*, Nadim Akhtar Khan, Tazeem Zainab Department of Library and Information Science, University of Kashmir, Hazratbal, Srinagar, J & K, India Abstract Much of the information is valuable and accessible on the internet, but a vast amount of high-quality information is not searched even by the best search engines. Estimates put the volume of the hidden internet at up to 500 times the size of the surface web. Surfing the visible web failed to satisfy many searchers’ information needs. For this reason, the deep web lying outside the scope of Google and other general search tools has excited many including library and information centers. Much of the hidden information resides in dynamic databases; the contents of these sites will never be indexed by any web crawler because the pages are generated on the fly and then discarded. It also includes other contents such as audio/video clips, flash movies, and documents in non-standard formats, etc. The present study tends to identify and explore such tools including search engines, directories and databases that help the research community to harness the invisible web.

Evaluation of Search Interfaces of Online Resources: A Literature Review Huma Shafiq*, Shazia Rasool Department of Library and Information Science University of Kashmir, Hazratbal, Srinagar-190006, India Abstract This paper aims at exploring the literature available on the evaluation of online resources on the basis of their search interfaces. The available literature is scanned deeply in order to discover the preferable works related to the evaluation of search interfaces. Various online resources like search engines, databases, e-journals, etc., are used to retrieve the necessary literature. The main purpose of this work is to identify, explore and document the literature pertaining to various aspects of search and retrieval efficiency of different online resources. This further provides an insight into the trends in available literature pertaining to different aspects of retrieval efficiency of such tools. The study divulges that not much of the work has been done in this field and research scholars can find a lot more areas to study upon. The study is first of its kind and makes an endeavor to review the literature in the field of search user interface evaluation.

Information-Seeking Behavior among PG Students of University of Kashmir: An Analytical Study Shabir Ahmad Ganie*, Mudasir Khazer Department of Library & Information Science, University of Kashmir, Srinagar-190006, India Abstract The aim of this study is to reveal the information-seeking behavior of postgraduate students in different departments of the University of Kashmir. A well-framed questionnaire was used to gather the data related to the problem. Questionnaires were distributed among postgraduate students of the University of Kashmir. The students were selected using a random-sampling approach and the departments were randomly selected. The findings reveal that the majority of the students use the information resources for research purposes. Most of the students access information sources through remote login. Users face multiple problems while accessing information sources. Availability of information sources in multiple formats and in large numbers has posed challenges to the user community. Students are also using different sources of information available in the main university library as well as in departmental libraries. Besides, they also use digital information through the internet. The study can be further extended to the analysis of information-seeking behavior through various information models in order to gain a broader perspective of changing patterns in present times. The study will point to the importance of providing access to quality information resources and eliminate the bottlenecks that hamper easy access to information resources. The administration should revisit their strategies in the light of the findings of the study.
