Failure Analysis of Spur Pinion Tooth of Three Wheeler Gear Box Rajendra P. Tadakhe*, S.T. Satpute Rajarambapu Institute of Technology, Islampur, India Abstract In a gear, various types of damage can occur over a period of its operation. Therefore, it is necessary to establish some tools and techniques for finding failure causes related to the material. In this paper, all possible causes responsible for the spur pinion tooth failure are enlisted and procedures for testing various mechanical properties, chemical compositions are explained. The main objective of this work was aimed at to know whether mechanical properties, chemical composition and microstructure are responsible for the tooth failure of spur pinion. Five samples of the failed pinions were collected from the field and subjected to testing. Test results were compared with the specifications and it was found that all values were conforming to the specifications and were not responsible for the tooth failure. Samples of the failed pinions were also subjected to fractographic study on simple stereomicroscope which revealed that tooth is uprooted because of the bending load. Modification in the face width and number of teeth in the pinion is suggested in order to enhance the bending strength of the tooth.

Abstract Smart materials are nowadays being used in all spheres of human life and technology. A lot of research is going on to utilize their potential in various engineering applications which may prove useful for common people. A wide variety of smart materials exist, which includes piezoelectric materials, magneto rheological materials (MR), electro rheological materials (ER), shape memory alloys, etc. In both ER and MR fluids, the change in fluid properties like viscosity can be manipulated by varying an electrical supply. By varying the strength of the electric field, the particle chains can be aligned in between the electrodes. The automotive and aerospace industries have for the first time used these smart materials for various applications. This paper highlights automobile engineering applications of the various smart materials - notably for vibration control and variable torque transmission. Nowadays, MR fluids are being developed for use in car shocks. Presently the researchers are working on use of ER fluids in automotive clutches, valves, engine mounts etc. Magneto rheological elastomers (MRE) are also being researched for various automotive applications.

Fabrication and Vibration Analysis of a Single-Passenger Car J. Immanuel Keba*, J. Isaac Rajesh, S. Alex Babu Department of Mechanical Engineering, PSN Engineering College, Tirunelveli, India Abstract So far the world is trying to make economic, compact car for a single passenger to travel. The authors also took part in such an endeavor to develop a compact 4-wheel car for a single passenger with minding of two main considerations called fuel consumption and travelling comfort. This car is exclusively fabricated for the alteration of two wheelers. Two wheelers give good fuel economy but there will be deficiency in comfort when traveling long distance. For overcoming this factor, the authors have fabricated a singlepassenger car by using various auxiliary automobile components from various vehicles for fulfilling their need in an effective manner. In addition to this, the authors have also done vibration analysis for key components of the car for promoting enhancement of vehicle design and make it further successful.
