Abstract Zornia gibbosa Span a member of fabaceae family, locally known as Nellujollusoppu/Haradahacchaga is widely used in the treatment of fracture by folklore practitioners of Udupi district, Karnataka. The present experimental study was carried out to evaluate Rasapanchaka of Zornia gibbosa Span (Samyojaki) by making use of human volunteers and animal experimentations. In order to incorporate the drug in Ayurvedic pharmacopeia it is essential to understand the Panchabhautic composition of Zornia gibbosa. Since Panchamahabhootas are very subtle and complex to understand we use Rasapanchaka to infer the Panchabhautic combination of drug. Rasapanchaka includes Rasa, Guna, Veerya, Vipaka and Prabhava which determine the activity of drug. The concept of Rasapanchaka is the foundation for understanding and predicting the probable mode of action of the drug. In the current study taste was criteria to analyse the Rasa of different parts of drug like fresh leaf and root along with this certain basic formulations like Choorna, Kalka and Kwatha prepared from whole plant. Veerya was assessed by endothermic and exothermic reaction and also with the help of animal experimentation. Vipaka was evaluated experimentally on the basis of action produced by the drug on Dhatu and Mala. Guna were evaluated on the basis of physical parameters and the pharmacological actions of drug. The current study reveals that the drug possess Kashaya Pradhana Tikta Madhura Anurasa, Guru, Snigdha, Sheeta, Picchila Guna, Sheeta Veerya and Madhura Vipaka.

Abstract Uterine prolapse (Nutue Rehm) still remains an issue of major health concern affecting large population of women in both developing and developed countries. Estimate suggests that 50% of parous women have some degree of genital prolapse for quite a long period. The objectives of the study were to evaluate the efficacy and safety of Acacia arabica (aqaqia) in the management of Nutue Rehm and to improve the quality of life of women. A single blind, plain controlled randomized study was carried out in Amraze Niswan Va Qabalt department of National Institute of Unani Medicine Hospital, Bangalore. Thirty patients with first and second degree uterovaginal prolapse in the age group of 25–65 years were included and randomly allocated to test (n=20) and control (n=10) groups. In test group, powder of Acacia arabica was given both orally (three gram in two divided doses) and locally (six gram in the form of Humool once daily).Vitamin B complex was administered once daily and pelvic floor muscle exercises were advised to the patients of both the groups. The duration of treatment was eight weeks. Subjective parameters, i.e., mass per vaginum, heaviness in pelvis, low backache, stress urinary incontinence, white discharge per vaginum and objective parameters, i.e., prolapse quality of life and half way system were assessed. The response of treatment was assessed on the basis of improvement in subjective and objective parameters after completion of study. Results were analyzed statistically. There was a significant improvement in subjective and objective parameters in the test group than the control group (p< 0.05). Acacia arabica was found to be effective in reducing the uterine prolapse and in improving the quality of life of women suffering from this disease.

Abstract Osteoporosis has become a public health problem worldwide. In Osteoporosis the bone loses their peak bone mass and becomes weak, fragile and susceptible to fractures at minimum stress. Osteoporosis can be compared with Asthikshaya. Asthis and vata are having direct relationship with each other and reciprocal to each other i.e., if vata increases then it will decrease the bone mass. Basti is supposed to be best treatment for balancing vata to check the process of resorption in the bones. To find a safe and permanent solution to the problem this research work was carried out. Tikatadi ksheer basti is based on the principle of bastayah ksheersarpishi tiktakoupahitani cha, and Lakshadi Guggulu is based on the principle of swayonivardhan dravyopayogah pratikarah. Tiktadi oil Matra Basti was given for balancing Vata Dosha. Study was conducted on 45 patients diagnosed (with the help of DEXA-Scan) of osteoporosis/Asthi kshaya which were randomly divided into three groups A, B and C. In Group A tab. Lakshadi Guggulu was given for 21 days in the dose of 1gm twice daily with milk and ghrit. In Group B Tiktadi oil Matra Basti and Lakshadi Guggulu was administered for 21 days and in Group C Lakshadi Guggulu was given for 21 days along with Tikatadi ksheer basti (420 ml) for 21 days. The Group C i.e. of combined therapy was most effective followed by Group B of Matra Basti and Group A of only Lakshadi Guggulu tablet, respectively in the management of Asthikshaya/Osteoporosis. Abstract During medical school, medical students are exposed to various career opportunities. Though such studies are ample in mainstream medicine, but are sparse in homeopathy. To recognize the most preferable career options of homeopathy students and to identify the influential factors behind choice of career and their future practice location. Crosssectional survey conducted on four government homeopathic schools in West Bengal, India on 606 undergraduates and fresh graduates in December 2013. Career preference questionnaire enquiring about career preferences and to what extent the decision was influenced by a set of given variables. Most frequently chosen career options were homeopathic medical officer (32.67%), private practitioner (28.55%), researcher (20.63%) and lecturer (13.69%). The results were subjected to regression analysis to test for associations and differences. The variables under consideration in this study, except gender and academic years, were considered as important (b = 0.09 – 0.18; OR = 1.10 – 1.19; SE = 0.01 – 0.02; p < 0.0001) for deciding the future practice location. ‘Experience at medical schools’, ‘advice from others’, and ‘considering future work conditions’ seemed to influence all the career choices significantly (p < 0.05); however, strikingly, the career option of lecturer was not found to be influenced significantly by any of these three or others. The study identified areas demanding urgent attention and the findings may help policy makers and academicians to rethink on distributing workforce appropriately. Further studies should focus on job satisfaction of homeopathic professionals and reasons behind such choices.

Abstract The present clinical trial was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of Kunjal Kriya and Rohitaka Sharapunkha Churna in the management of Mukhadushika (Acne Vulgaris). The subjects were randomly divided into three groups. A total 30 patients were selected for the study and all the patients completed the study. The efficacy was determined by finding out the difference between the base line data of parameters with the after treatment data. The effects were examined on the chief complaints as well as the associated complaints. It was observed that statistically significant improvement was noticed in clinical parameters of all the three groups. Patients undergoing Shodhana (Kunjal Kriya) and shamana kriya (Rohitaka Sharapunkha Churna) had better relief as compared to the other two groups. Rohitaka Sharapunkha Churna also showed encouraging results in managing the all symptoms. But both medicine and Kunjal Kriya did not show any significant changes in haematological and hormonal values. Hence, it can be concluded that Kunjal Kriya accompanied with internal medicine (Rohitaka Sharapunkha Churna) yields pronounced improvement in Mukhadushika.

Abstract Skin is the largest organ of the body which protects the body from the outer environment. It is the organ that reflects many internal diseases by changing its character. Psoriasis is an autoimmune papulosquamous disorder that represents an inflammation pattern of the skin to various stimuli. It is characterized by sharply demarcated erythematous plaque/patches/papules covered with silvery scaling. Psoriasis is a common dermatological problem affecting up to 2.5% of the world population. While various researches have been made in the field of Medical Science, but still there is no absolute, simple, safe and invariably effective permanent cure of Psoriasis has been attained till today. The aim is to evaluate the effect of Manahshiladi lepa in Psoriasis. We had registered 21 patients randomly for the trial with Manahshiladi lepa in OPD, Department of Kaya Chikitsa, S.A.C. Lucknow. Period of study was March 2007 to May 2008. Results showed that after four months of treatment with Manahshiladi lepa 15 patients (71.43%) were relieved, five patients (12.8%) were improved and one patient (4.76%) remained unchanged. It was concluded that Manahshiladi lepa is safe, effective and economical for the patients of Psoriasis. No side effects have been observed during the trial.

Manavalakalai - A Scientific Approach G. R. Valliammal* Research Centre for Commerce, Thiruvalluvar College, Papanasam, T.N., India Abstract Manavalakalai Yoga practice was formulated by Shri. Vethathiri Maharishi. In this yoga practice meditation and introspection play vital role to minimize mental frequency. The physical senses of the body are always affected by one’s mental activities. That is, the body is induced and activated to function on every level according to one’s thought. Every human being is a bio magnetic unit. Life means action, energy, or force. Body and Sprit are both functioning jointly in man. The spirit is the life- force, the storehouse of all Karmas, of heredity. All the activities of man-thoughts, speech and deeds are centered upon the sensations of pleasure and pain. Harmonious flow of bio-magnetism causes pleasure, peace, and ecstasy. Magnetism is the invisible quantum of force, when it is transformed in a living being into waves of pleasure, sound, light, taste, smell and mind. In addition to realization of God, realization of mind is equally imperative. The functions of the mind and the body are interdependent. In the compression and magnification of all bio magnetic waves of experiences of mind, the frequencies play their important role. The speed and force of a wave condition the length of each cycle. The number of cycles per second is noted as the ‘frequency’ of the wave. The human mental frequency works from 14 to 40 cycles per second when one perceives with the senses, engaged in the deeds and enjoying or suffering their result like pain, pleasure etc. Meditation and Introspection make the mind wave focused inwardly and reduce the frequencies of mind. Thus both Meditation and Introspection practices will enable one to understand the value of one’s own existence.
