Development of an Active Catheter Mechanism using IPMC for in vivo Inspection Dillip Kumar Biswal, Dibakar Bandopadhya*, Santosha Kumar Dwivedy Department of Mechanical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati, Guwahati, Assam, India

Abstract An active catheter mechanism designed and developed for body parts (interiors, oral) inspection using active polymeric actuator i.e. ionic polymer metal composite (IPMC). The first step is achieved by fabricating the low cost silver (Ag) electrode IPMC following the chemical decomposition method. When a voltage is applied, the catheter yields a transverse movement; at the same time can exhibit forward and backward motion enables it to inspect wide range of area. Low driving voltage (maximum 1.2V) ensures safety in clinical application inside the body parts. An experimental setup of the mechanism has been developed using optical fiber for inspection purpose. A generalized mathematical model of the mechanism has been derived for fluid medium actuation and is tested both in air and water to determine the effect of interactive forces during operation and the results are discussed.

Theoretical and Experimental Investigation of Non-linear Vibration Response of an IPMC Actuator Subjected to Alternating Electric Potential Dillip Kumar Biswal, Dibakar Bandopadhya*, Santosha Kumar Dwivedy Department of Mechanical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati, Guwahati, Assam, India Abstract The precise predication of stable and unstable zone for an applied excitation voltage and frequency is of importance in many micromechanical systems utilizing ionic polymer metal composite (IPMC) as the actuator. A linear dynamic model thus will no longer be valid for IPMC actuator having low thickness and thus more flexible. In this article, nonlinear vibration characteristics of a silver (Ag) based IPMC actuator is studied under alternating electric potential in inextensible condition. The IPMC actuator of silver electrode is fabricated first using Nafion as the base polymer following the chemical decomposition method. A theoretical model of motion has been derived using experimental bending data and following the D’Alembert’s principle that describes the nonlinear vibration characteristics of the actuator. Generalized Galerkin’s method is then utilized to discretize the equation of motion. Method of Multiple Scales has been used to solve the non-linear equation of motion. Simulations have been performed taking into account the experimental data and by solving the temporal equation of motion of the system. Several experiments are conducted with an IMPC actuator in fixed-free configuration and vibration response is studied applying the alternating electric potential. Both transient and steady-state response of the system is studied and the theoretical results are validated and correlated with the experimental results.

Fault Diagnostic Method of Transformers based on Hybrid ANN and Expert System M. Ahfaz Khan1*, A. K. Sharma2 1

Kalaniketan (Govt.) Polytechnic College, Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, India 2 Jabalpur (Govt.) Engineering, College, Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, India

Abstract Transformers are major equipments power system which affects not only the electrical energy availability of the area supplied, but also the economical operation of utilities. The most important concern about incipient faults in power transformer is that they may reduce the electrical and mechanical stress of the insulation. This proposed hybrid system utilizes dissolved gas in oil analysis techniques to diagnose for fault condition of power transformers. The Roger’s Four Ratio Method, NTT Flag point method, generation rate ratio method and Total dissolve combustible Gas method used of its in expert system. Both the Roger’s four -ratio and the NTT flag point method are implemented. These two methods are fuzzefied. Which is increasing the accuracy of both methods, as the generation rate ratio method is use to analyzed the trend of fault gases. All the four methods are combining into expert system, to achieve greater accuracy in diagnose of transformers. The topology and training data of its artificial neural network (ANN) are accurately selected to extract known as well as unknown diagnosis correlations. Both the ANN and expert system are used together into the hybrid system to take the advantages of the inherent positive features of each method to achieve greater accuracy in diagnosis of transformers. Test result show that the hybrid system has better performance then Roger’s ratio, ANN and expert system method used indivisibly.

Reliability Evaluation of Power Distribution Network Considering Uncertainty in Failure M. Azhar Khan*, Shailja Shukla Jabalpur (Govt.) Engineering, College, Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, India

Abstract With the development of economy and society power planning is facing with the influence of much uncertainty, which are mainly power distribution network. Power system especi ally at the distribution level is prone to failures and disturbances as many devices are responsible for the successful operation of a radial distribution system. Every time an engineer takes a measurement, the only certainty is that the measurement is not exact; all measurements have some amount of uncertainty associated with them. You may come to the conclusion that since all of the measurements were very close, you know your weight “accurately. But it is most likely that the bathroom scale has an error (for example, a zero offset) and you have very accurately got the wrong answer. Things that failure rate of a distribution network component are usually assumed to be constant in conventional reliability evaluation of distribution network. It has been realized from the real-time operation that a component will experience more failures during heavy loading condition. Than those during light loading condition, which means that the failure rate of a component in real-time operation is not constant and varies with loading condition. In order to improve the reliability evaluation to the distribution network, uncertainty factors about failure rate considered under conventional reliability analysis of distribution system in the work.
