Breast Feeding and Unani Medicinal Plants with Galactagogue Potential Qamar Uddin1*, Javed Inam Siddiqui2, Ahmad Sayeed1, Khalid Mehmood Siddiqui1 1

Abstract Breast feeding is the best choice for infant health as breast milk contains the perfect amount of all nutrients required for the growth and development of the baby. However, surveys indicate that the majority of babies today are bottle-fed. Many mothers avoid breast feeding because they feel it is socially unacceptable, that it interferes with employment or social life, that it will affect their physical attractiveness, or because of fear of failure. The decision to breast feed or bottle feed a baby is a personal matter to be decided by the new mother, but breast feeding should be encouraged by education throughout pregnancy and puerperium. Breast feeding is economical, emotionally satisfying, promotes mother-infant bonding, and gives significant immunity to the infant. Thus, new mothers who wish not to breast feed should be encouraged to at least consider breast feeding their babies so that they can be prevented from malnutrition as children are the future of a nation and their health is central to global concerns and is intimately bound up with economic development and education. Keeping in view the advantages of breast feeding for the infant as well as the mother, an attempt has been made in this scientific paper to provide updated information on breast-feeding and treatment of deficient lactation (Qillat-e-Laban) with Unani herbal drugs having galactagogue (Mudirr-e-Laban) activity.

Al Hijamah (Cupping Therapy): A Brief Introduction with Modern Perspective Sheikh Haneef Mohammad1*, Azhar Jabeen2, Fasihuzzaman2, M. A. Siddiqui2 1 A & U Tibbia College, Karol Bagh, New Delhi, India 2 Jamia Hamdard, Hamdard Nagar, New Delhi, India

Abstract Alhijamah (cupping therapy) refers to a Unani regimenal mode of treatment. Alhijamah is an ancient method which was practically used among the Chinese, Babylonians, Egyptians, Greeks, Romans, Arabs and Indians. The earliest recorded evidence of Alhijamah was discovered in Egyptian medical document Ebers Papyrus dating back to 1550 BC. In Chinese medicine too, Alhijamah is used for the treatment of various diseases. The treatment by vacuum cups has been mentioned in the book of Al-Ambratoor Al-Seeni about 4000 years ago. In Greece, history of cupping dates back to Hippocrates (460–377 BC). This therapy entered Europe through Spain when the Muslim physicians and their scientific literature were the primary sources of medical sciences. This mode of treatment was unavailable for a long period of time. With the advancement in the field of science and technology, this mode of treatment was also proved to be beneficial scientifically in a large number of diseased conditions. With its re-evaluation after scientific validation, nowadays it is used in various countries. In India, several clinical trials have been performed under the supervision of various Unani institutions all over country.

Aloe Vera: An Ancient Remedy with Current Concept Abhishek Sinha, Srivastava Sunita, Mishra Anuj*, Prasad K Ruchika, Giri Debanti Sardar Patel Post Graduate Institute of Dental and Medical Sciences, Raebareily Road, Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, India

Abstract Aloe Vera plant has been known for 2000 years. Greek scientists regarded aloe Vera as the universal panacea. The Egyptians called the Aloe “the plant of immortality.” It is a member of liliaceae family. Among more than 300 species, the one with most medicinal property is Aloe barbadenis. The leaf of the plant has two different parts, the parenchymal tissue present in the inner layer produces Aloe Vera gel and the specialized cells present in the middle layer produce exudates that consist of bitter yellow latex with powerful laxative-like actions. Aloe Vera is known to have 75 known different ingredients including vitamins, minerals, enzymes, sugars, anthraquinones, amino acids, sterols and water. The gelatinous substance inside the leaf is known to have many beneficial properties like moisturizing, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, antiproliferative, and antioxidant, wound healing, pain relief, treatment of minor burns, abrasions and irritations and skin lesions.

Evaluation of Antioxidant Activity of Coumarin Isolated from Eupatorium triplinerve Sharath R.1*, Harish B.G. 1, Channarayappa1, Samrat1, Preetham J. 2, Muktha1, Sushma S. Murthy3 1

Department of Biotechnology, M.S. Ramaiah Institute of Technology, Bangalore, India 2 Department of Biochemistry, Centre for R &D in Life Sciences, Microbiology Research Laboratory, Dayananda Sagar Institutions, Bangalore, India 3 Department of Microbiology, Centre for R &D in Life Sciences, Microbiology Research Laboratory, Dayananda Sagar Institutions, Bangalore, India Abstract Eupatorium triplinerve (Asteraceae) is a slender herb with narrow lanceolate leaves. Extract of the plant is used as antiseptic, and in the treatment of various ulcers and haemorrhages. Ayapana is a rich source of naturally occurring coumarin chemicals. Coumarins are chemical compounds found in many plants and which usually have a sweet scent—much like newly-mown hay. Coumarin has clinical value as the precursor for several anticoagulant drugs; most notably, one widely prescribed drug called warfarin. Coumarin and methanolic extract were evaluated for various antioxidant assays like DPPH, Superoxide anion radical, nitric oxide, TBARS taking Rutin as standard. Methanolic extract of Eupatorium triplinerve showed better activity against DPPH, Nitric oxide, ABTS, but failed against superoxide and hydrogen peroxide assay. Coumarin showed better activity against DPPH, hydrogen peroxide, ABTS assay but failed against superoxide, Nitric oxide assay. These results clearly indicate that Coumarin is a paramount target for further research in curing various diseases. Keywords: Eupatorium triplinerve, coumarin, anti-oxidant
