Abstract Osteoarthritis (OA) is one of the most common chronic conditions and over half of the patients with OA report being limited in their daily activities because of pain. Physical activity and exercise reduce the pain, but do not relieve the cause. This study was done to emphasize the efficacy of leech therapy in the management of Waja-ul-Mafasil (osteoarthritis) in the Department of Moalijat (General Medicine), Govt. Nizamia Tibbi College & Hospital, Hyderabad, during the period 2005–2008. The study consisted of 20 patients in each test and comparative group. Patients between 36 and 65 years of age with the complaint of pain in both knee joints during movement and which is relieved by rest, difficulty in walking and in standing after prolonged sitting on the ground, persistent osteoarthritic symptoms for at least 6 months were included in the study. Patients were given treatment, i.e., oral decoction of Unani herbs and local application of leech in test group, whereas in comparative group oral and local Unani herbal formulation was given for 4 weeks and follow-up done after one month. Intensity of pain was assessed by visual analogous scale (VAS) before and after trial. Results were assessed by using the student ‘t’ test and two groups were compared regarding pain relief by X2 test. The result of the study showed a significant reduction in pain by both test (p < 0.05) and comparative groups (p < 0.01). Local application of leech on osteoarthritis is significant in comparison to local application of Unani herbal medicine.

Impact of Obesity on Women’s Health and Its Management with Unani Herbal Medicine – A Review Tabassum K1, Mohammad Nasar K2* 1
National Institute of Unani Medicine, Bangalore, Karnataka, India 2 Lecturer, Dr. Abdul Haq Unani Medical College, A.P., India
Abstract Obesity is a term used to describe body weight that is much greater than what is considered healthy and is a serious health problem. It affects 32.2% of the global population mostly in high income groups. The adverse effects of obesity on women’s health is overwhelming and is related to polycystic ovary syndrome, diabetes and diabetes in turn puts women at dramatically increased risk of cardiovascular disease, and risk of several major cancers. Overweight and obesity are associated with elevated mortality from all causes in both men and women. Strategies involve general lifestyle modification which includes healthy diet, maintaining optimal weight, physical activity, etc. Non-pharmacological therapy like diet and exercise may not be helpful to reduce weight satisfactorily and it also has its own limitations. Unani herbal medicine plays an important role in the management of obesity. This review paper gives information on herbs and their mechanism of action for weight reduction.

Standardization and Quantitative Estimation of Chemical Constituents of Lipotab Unani Herbal Tablets Shilpa A. Thombre1, Vaishali P. Nagulwar2*, Vrushali K. Pudke3, Shrikrishna S. Muske4 Government College of Pharmacy, Kathora Naka, Amravati-444604, India
Abstract The Unani poly-herbal drug Lipotab tablet is therapeutically used for cardiac health. There are no standard procedures available for evaluation of the constituents present in any herbal products. Standardization and quality control of indigenous medicines will not only increase the benefit of the drugs but also translate into higher profits for the industry. In the present study, the constituents of Lipotab tablet, i.e., turmeric (Curcumin) and garlic (thiosulphinate allicin) has been evaluated qualitatively and quantitatively by spectroscopic and chromatographic (HPTLC) techniques. In Lipotab tablet, Curcumin was estimated 83% w/w and thiosulphinate allicin 60% w/w.

A Critical Review on Concept of Aging in Unani Tib Farkhunda Jabin* Department of Tahaffuzi wa Samaji Tib, Ayurvedic Unani Aligarh Medical College, Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, India Abstract With better advances in the field of medicine, life expectancy has increased in India. It is expected to increase to 65 years in 2015, which means more burden on the existing health care system of the country. Unfortunately, in our country elderly care is hospital-based with little attention on community-based, day care center-based or home-based care. With rapidly changing scenario of aging population, we should find the right model for long-term health care. Unani Tib with its unique individualistic approach and easy remedies can provide complete cost-effective health care model for geriatric population. Unani Tib advocates maintenance and protection of health in old age which starts from young age through adopting measures which protect and maintain innate heat and moisture of the body. It is not a single procedure or method rather it is the diet, lifestyle and way of living which should be adopted throughout their life to achieve the goal of healthy and active aging and add life to years not only years to life.

Intensity of pain was assessed by pre-structured and pre-tested schedule. A detailed history regarding age of menarche, education, socioeconomic status, impact on lifestyle, etc., was taken. Assessment of the Mizaj (temperament) was made. The data was recorded in CRF. It was observed that the disease was more prevalent in the age group of 17–21 years and in Damvi Mizaj patients and in patients of MIG and in patients of beyond primary education.
