When launching something as community driven as STONES, it was important to us that we appropriately celebrate the start of something special. Our launch party took place at Kooky Nohmad, which is also the home of STONES Magazine. It was amazing to see many local businesses joining us for celebrations, canapés and fizz, which seemed like the appropriate way to welcome our new magazine. Not only was it a celebration for us, but for many it was the first face to face ‘networking’ type event for a long time, which made it all the more special. Thank you so much to everyone who attended the launch and a huge thank you to everyone who contributed too and supported STONES magazine vol one! We can’t wait to show you what we have to come next. We look forward to you coming on the journey with us. A special thank you to Camb Lights, House of parties & Kooky Nohmad for helping us with our launch event.

STONES meets up with local GB boxer George Crotty. –
C H A M P
How did you get into boxing? Our family has always had a very strong affinity with the sport of boxing and since the age of seven. I was spending time in the gym watching my older brothers, who I looked up to which inspired me to get into the sport. What is your greatest achievement so far? I have really enjoyed my career so far in Boxing with lots of personal highlights, from Juniors to senior, but for me winning the elite national title and getting selected for team GB full time have been my greatest personal achievements so far. What does the future look like? I really take each day at a time perfecting my skillset and continuously developing as a fighter, but in terms of events and I am working towards the World Championships in Serbia the end of October for GB and then onto the Commonwealth Games in 2022. Beyond the Commonwealths, Paris 2024 Olympics is my main aim and then looking to turn professional after that.

Royston has always been known as a market town, and over the last couple of years we’ve seen Royston Market begin to thrive, resembling some of its former glory of the 70’s and 80’s. This transformation has been achieved by incredible community support and the leadership of our new market manager, Rob Mills, but just how has Rob helped to restore the market to being one of Royston’s best assets? Rob took over the market in 2019, and since then has taken many steps to restore the market to something we can all be proud of. He started off by introducing an initiative to allow free pitches for local businesses as a way of regaining trader’s interest in Royston Market. As COVID hit, many would think the market would suffer, however, for those providing food, drink and essentials on the market, this wasn’t the case at all. The market gained an increase of footfall, with people feeling safer in the open air and rallying to support small local businesses. Many of these new customers have retained their loyal shopping habits; even now the restrictions have been lifted. The market is now full every weekend of your usual market favorites, as well as a rotation of other stalls such as craft, jewellery, cakes and much more. So each trip you make to the market you’ll be able to find something different. Due to the success and interest from both traders and the community, market stalls are now in high demand, with pitches filled up all the way up until Christmas! Thanks to the great work by Rob, the Royston Market is something we can be proud of. So if you haven’t visited in a while, pop down on a Wednesday or Saturday and remember to think local, shop local and support local where possible!

Q&A With Rupert Findlay, Founder. How would you describe Work Way Upton? In two words ‘Boutique Co-working’. We also like to use the words ‘Hybrid Working’ which helps to explain the new way of working (post COVID), with so many people looking to have more than one space to fulfil their office needs. Frankly, we have all had enough of working from home 5 days a week, but simultaneously returning to a 5 day a week commute isn’t something most people are keen to go back to. Instead we are all looking to mix it up a bit. Working from home 1-2 days a week, maybe 1 day in London with the team, but what about the other 2-3 days a week? Well that’s where Work Way steps in to offer a beautiful hybrid work space that has all the comforts of home, but with the infrastructure, buzz and social side of a well equipped office. What inspired the idea? Story so far? I used to live in Singapore where most people hybrid work. While I was there as well as having an office, I was a founder member of a members club called 1880, which was an amazing mix of a members club, coworking and events space. This experience coupled with my father passing away 18 months ago and inheriting the responsibility of breathing new life in to the family owned building Upton House inspired me to bring the concept to Royston.

Tell us about your background and how you got to where you are? I started my first business (a Restaurant in SaffronWalden) aged 17yrs old and worked for myself ever since across various industries including F&B, Fashion, consumer tech as well as FMCG. I began by launching my own brands but for the last 10yrs I have partnered with exciting high growth start up brands in the west and launched them into Asia. Whilst living in Singapore I also helped to launch a few restaurants as I just love businesses that are people facing! What can the space offer to Royston and the Local Community? Alongside giving people an additional work space option, we are also very focused on building a community via our events space. We have an events manager that is on hand to work with both our community as well as the wider local community by offering events from yoga to a secret supper club. Watch this space or get in touch for a schedule or if you have any events you are looking to host over the coming months. How can people get involved? Simple, drop us a line or give us a call and let us show you around our space and talk though your needs. We have options to suit everyone with incredibly flexible plans as well as dedicated spaces. If you love the countryside, fine food and the warmest of welcomes, you don’t have to look much further than award winning gastropub in the beautiful village of Therfield, The Fox and Duck. Set up in the rolling hills just on the outskirts of Royston, The Fox and Duck is at the heart of the local community, led by their charismatic leader and landlord Ivan. The pub is everything you want to find from a local public house; friendly, approachable and the kind of place you could while away a day. Its rustic and traditional interior creates a comforting aroma and the backdrop for a modern and exciting menu, which never fails to impress. The pub is enriched in history dating back to the 1700’s and still retains most of the original features and you can find lots of interesting artifacts around the pub showcasing its heritage and activity through the ages.

The Fox super Sunday lunches are all about comfort and flavour, so whether you are visiting with friends or the family you can be sure to be looked after by their welcoming team. You may want to wear your comfy trousers though as the generous portions are certainly not going to leave you left wanting more, but there is always room for dessert, right?

y l i pp Ha ever after Are you recently engaged? Engaged-inwaiting? Thinking about popping the question? Well first and foremost… CONGRATULATIONS! And welcome to the wedding planning bubble. Although recently there have been additional obstacles and restrictions, delays and adaptions to navigate round, planning a wedding; no matter how big or small, should be such an exciting time. For some of you, the reunion of family, friends and large gatherings fills you with excitement to plan a large wedding with many guests. Others may be looking for a more intimate gathering, perhaps a small celebration of matrimony, followed by a party later. Whatever it is you choose there are so many amazing local businesses that can help be a part of your special day! Over the last 18 months, they have adapted their offerings and packages to especially accommodate smaller gatherings and alternative ideas. As a community, people have really rallied together to ensure that no matter how strange the world may seem, love can still shine through. Nothing fancy just love – A group of local suppliers recently teamed up to provide inspiration for innovative wedding ideas for that intimate or open-air wedding, providing a perfect and idyllic woodland theme set at the Heath, Royston. From supplying the cake, to the favours, the dress and more, this provides you with some gorgeous wedding inspiration perfect for the Pinterest board that will help get the ball rolling and help with your planning.
“After seeing the inspiration for this shoot I decided to go with a lot of neutral tones and wild, trailing foliage. The bouquet was large and filled with different flowers like roses, lisianthus, ammi, spray roses, amaranthus and astrantia, along with foliages like eucalyptus, birch, asparagus and dried palm spears. For the arch style structure we used a type of den which was already built in the woods and I created the clusters of flowers straight onto it so it would look as natural as possible.” - Sophie May Floral.

THE ART OF INK It’s art. The body is the canvas. Tattooing has made its way in to museums and galleries displayed as art, where critics and patrons have begun to accept it as an art form. From the traditional days of bikers and sailors, the stigma of ink and inmate has well and truly disappeared. The art of tattooing has taken off across the world and none more so than the UK, especially amongst ages 30-39, with over 35% of this age demographic choosing to decorate their body with art. Tattooing requires an incredible amount of technical skill, where you can’t just pick up a tattoo machine and expect to start creating a masterpiece on human skin, as if it were like writing on paper. The interaction between the inks used and flesh is an entirely unique sensation and it takes a significant amount of time and practice to perfect the skill. New trends are constantly emerging and just like fashion, tattoo trends have a trickle-down effect, but we have started to see more and more colour, minimalist black ink work, grunge tattoos, and more stick-and-poke art. Whilst the trends are always evolving, more traditional designs, bold lines, dark shading and bright pops of colour are unlikely to ever fizzle out.

There are many tattoo parlours in and around Royston, each with their own unique style and talented artists. The latest addition to the list is Eunoia INK. Nestled in Angel Pavement, it’s exterior is very understated and could be missed or mistaken for an Art Gallery, but this is all part of its charm. Once inside you will find two extremely talented artists; Damien, the owner, who has been tattooing for nearly 10 years and his apprentice, Hannah. Damien is a self-taught artist, who progressed into the art of tattooing after getting his first tattoo. Following a conversation with the tattooist, who discovered he could draw, showed him the way and from then on he’s never looked back. Hannah is relatively new to tattooing; previously working with oil and acrylic painting portraits she made the decision to try her hand with a needle. After meeting Damien a couple of years ago he took her under his guidance and she is now thriving and feels very at home turning her work into ever lasting tattoos. Eunoia INK is the outcome of the recent pandemic and the lockdowns we experienced in 2020. Not being able to work consistently throughout 2020 really made Damien consider what he wanted from a career and had always thought of opening his own shop one day. After taking Hannah on as his apprentice in 2019 and deciding that staying local felt like the most natural direction. Having lived and worked in Royston for many years and meeting a host of the most amazing clients, he found an empty unit in Royston and went from there. www.eunoia-ink.com \ @damian.er \ @_shamble.bambi_

Since 1189, during the reign of Richard 1, Royston has been known for its bustling market, where in its former glory you could have bought almost anything from antiques to livestock on market day. Depending on your age you will have different memories of the market growing up, but those of the older generation often fondly reminisce of the days where you could see the cattle being paraded around the town and the rumble of noise coming from the bidding. Like the cattle, the marketplace has been shepherded around the town, where it has had various locations over the years, before finally moving to its current position on Market Hill. Back in the day, Royston’s market was so popular that people would come from far and wide to visit and was held in very high esteem. Somewhere along the line the market lost is pizzaz, sparkle and found itself a shadow of the chartered market town it had once been known for. This quieter spell, led to many people to write the market off, but we are delighted to say that the market is...back!! Under new management the market is taking huge steps towards restoring its image, more inline with its former glory and aided by the recent pandemic where the local community were forced to reconsider their buying and social habits and exploring what the town has to offer.

You can still find all of the regular favourites that have been available for years, but there are some very exciting additions, from craft stalls to street food vans, there is something for everyone to be inspired by. If you haven’t visited the market recently, why not pop along and support some of the amazing services and products it has to offer. As a community, we have to support our local amenities, or we will lose them and with Royston being a known market town it is great to see the work being put in to restore it to its glory.
~ If there is anything you’d like to see on the market, leave some feedback as it is always looking at ways to improve and bring more people to visit.

DIGITAL_TRANSFORMATION C H A N G I N G _ T H E _ F A C E O F _ C Y B E R _ S E C U R I T Y As the digital transformation of business accelerates at speed, Cyber Security has significantly increased in importance and will only continue to do so according to Cyber Security veteran, Jamie Murphy, CEO and Founder of Cyber Business Growth, a cyber services business based in Cambridgeshire.

How is Digital Transformation Changing the Face of Cyber Security?
Why is Cyber Security more important than ever?
As businesses embrace flexible working and continue to move to cloud services and ecommerce, there is a growing pressure on businesses to deliver this securely. More to check, more complexity and more compliance requirements.
Having been in Cyber for over 25 years, the challenges of the past two years have been unprecedented. Many industries have seen a substantial rise in cyber-attacks, as criminals exploited both uncertainty around the pandemic and the huge increase in people working from home. A business that fails to act could face irreparable financial and reputational damage.
As companies continue to work remotely, many are now transferring their business critical data to the cloud, using external provider services to allow fine tuning of internal communications and processes, but this comes with its own risks. The other side to digital transformation is the growth in selling goods or services via the Internet or mobile apps as buyer behaviour has changed dramatically over the last two years, resulting in product/service advertising diversifying. This has radically changed the risk profile for an organisation. Business, Government or Charities are more vulnerable than ever as they open up their assets to trade or interact using the internet.
Threats of ransomware are rife with a huge return for a relatively low-cost outlay using basic email or social engineering to lure people in. The old thinking that if you were a small business, you wouldn’t be affected are long gone. Criminals are both playing a volume game and using them to connect to large supply chains or government. How is Cyber Business Growth Supporting Businesses through the challenges? Digital transformation is challenging, but if you approach it the right way, it can be manageable with a pragmatic methodology.

INSPIRING THE NEXT GENERATION
S TON E S
Standing at the top of the hill at the gates could be deemed daunting, but this is all part of the thrill of BMX racing. If you watched the Olympic or Paralympic Games over the summer, you couldn’t help but be inspired, but for us, one of the stand out events was BMX, especially as our town of Royston has a huge affinity with the sport and the facilities to support its future. The standard set by team GB in both the men’s and women’s competition was incredibly high and the passion demonstrated transpired into smiling faces back home, where the nation watched on in awe. These courageous athletes risked it all around the track, maneuvering through steep burns, big jumps, where they were rewarded for their efforts, walking away with Silver and Gold. The best thing about the success has been how it has opened up the aperture for BMX as a high-performance sport and hopefully inspired the next generation of BMX riders. Big congratulations to Kyle Whyte and Beth Shriever. If you haven’t heard of them already, Royston Rockets have been established for almost 40 years, with elitelevel competitive participation across all ages, however, there is an opportunity for entry into the sport, with open sessions for all abilities and rental bikes for kids to try it out. Royston Rockets coaching team are experienced BMX racers, including National and British Championship winners, who also have a qualification in British Cycling coaching. Additional to the coaching team, the club is very fortunate to be supported by volunteers who make it all possible. The home of Rockets was upgraded back in 2013, by National Lottery funding enhancing the clubs existing facility with this incredible cash injection, where we now have an amazing facility right here in the heart of Royston. If you have been inspired by BMX this summer, get in touch with Royston Rockets or head down the track to check it out for yourself. No matter what background, if you’re determined, enjoy fast pace sports, you will 100% love BMX.

Muay Thai, more commonly referred to, as “Thai boxing” is a martial art and combat sport that uses stand-up striking along with various clinching techniques. This discipline is known as the “art of eight limbs” as it is characterised by the combined use of fists, elbows, knees, and shins. Classes involve cardio vascular warm up, stretching and a variety of Thai techniques on pads, working with partners on offensive and defensive techniques as well as controlled sparring. These classes are for those who want to truly master the art of Thai Kickboxing with the chance to see personal progression through a learning syllabus and opportunity to grade, spar and compete. Head instructor Liam has vast experience in Muay Thai with 16 years tuition and instructor qualifications under the instruction of East Area Thai & Kickboxing (EATK) where he obtained his Black belt, which has been running for over 20 years, led by Chief instructor, Nigel Thomson.

As well as the Muay Thai classes he also runs Boxing Fitness classes for those who want to incorporate boxing and kickboxing techniques into a high intensity fitness session like no other in town. From the feedback of those who attend it is evident that putting on gloves and taking a days stress out on the pads works absolute wonders for boosting your mood. So many people have fallen off the fitness bandwagon because they are tired of the same routine, but Boxing Fitness sessions can burn some serious calories, whilst doing something that gives you a real buzz and leaves you coming back for more. Each session is different with new exercises; pad rounds and circuits are being introduced to work all muscle groups to build strength, tone and condition. “Having been training people for a few months I’ve really enjoyed seeing the benefits it’s brought to so many of our members. It’s been amazing to see moods being lifted, fitness & techniques improving week by week, self-esteem boosted and it’s meant a lot to know how the classes help people tackle some really tricky life situations to leave them feeling better about themselves. Many of our members are already feeling healthier having lost weight or improved energy after feeling low following a hard couple of years during the pandemic”

As we say goodbye to summer and life begins to get back to “normal” it’s time to embrace the best autumn decor ideas and trends that are available. I love the change of seasons; I find it beautiful to watch the leaves turning brown, orange & yellow. It’s also refreshing to feel the weather a little crisper. Make your home even more inviting by rethinking lighting, adding warm colours, exciting prints and cosy textures. Bringing the outdoor in. Transfer the beautiful colours of autumn into your home; with simple additions to your entrance room, living/dining room and bedroom, you will smell the pumpkin spice & feel the cosy evening and Halloween vibes.
Colour palette
Incorporate the best of the autumnal colours (let the nature talk and inspire you). Include textures from the outside with more contemporary interior design trends and looks. Think neutrals with burnt orange, yellow, khaki. Perhaps add a splash of something bright. Place textured throws around the fire. Time to add a personal touch by making your own decorations; painted pumpkins, candles, dried flower arrangements.
Warm Lighting
Who doesn’t want to feel good at home? This is the time to refocus and re-define what is essential and important! Appeal & satisfy your senses. Use colours, materials, lights, scents, textures & music to get a feel-good-athome experience. There is no better way than to use candles to make your home feel cosier and more welcoming. This is an ideal time to use seasonal pumpkins, illuminated with candles that can radiate a soft glow onto your walls. Place black metal and wooden lanterns at your front and interior doors.
Textures and foliage
Go out, go hunting in the forest (I’m very privileged to have amazing meadows and the beautiful Heath near my house). It offers a wild variety of colourful foliage which if used properly are a great way to complete your displays. What is your Autumn’s Motto??? Cosi, warm and/or comfy? Let’s be honest the fireplace is the focal point. Position some pumpkins, natural textures – think wicker baskets, foliage and woody items. It will create an inviting space; a space that gives you a secure cocooning feeling.
Autumn is all about Layers

layering. With cooler temperatures drifting in, adding layers will provide your house with an attractive autumn feel whilst also helping to make your living environment considerably softer & more comfortable. I love rugs, not only do they add some colourful character to your interior, but they also bring some much-needed warmth to surface in the colder months. Project yourself, getting up the morning, looking at the foggy weather with a cup of coffee in hand while walking on a fluffy, bouncy and soft textured floor. Can you feel it? Start layering your floor with one large plain piece, and then add a smaller, patterned rug on top to obtain the ultimate comfort and that warm feeling. The more layers, the warmer the look and feel, the greater the effect will be. Layering applies to chairs, sofas and beds as well. Give them all a coat to last until spring makes an entrance. Source thick, fluffy fabrics to snug your interior. Cashmere throws are always a winner. They feel beautifully soft, tender and cosy and will last for many years. Do you know that Cashmere doesn’t come from sheep, but from goats? There is that one nomadic breed that produces hair fine enough. This breed is found between Mongolia, Southwest China, Iran, Tibet, Northern India and Afghanistan.
Time to think Table-Scapes.
October is Harvest time. As a French person, I grew up in the vineyards, harvest is the most important time of the year. It is this special time of the year that bring back memories such as fresh grapes juice, golden leaves, warm fires and more importantly family meals around a seasonal Table-Scape and menu. Harvest inspired decor is always on trend with a focus on the burnt orange tones, pampas grass and tinted glass. Autumnal wreaths can be used to decorate both indoors and out, they add an elegance to your set-up. As you do for Christmas, place them as a centrepiece on your dining table! Linen tablecloths, seagrass placemats, mini pumpkins, candles, natural autumn leaf napkin ties, fruits, berries, and gourds. ….relax and enjoy. Bon Appetit!!!
Wool boucle and wood
Finally, the trendiest aspect of autumn 2021/2022 is the boucle combined with natural wood. “Get snug with this chic French woollen trend for your house!”. combined with a natural grain of wood, they will bring both texture and character to any living space and are ideal to induce that autumnal feeling to your surroundings. Let’s get cosy.

ROYSTON T R A I L
ICKNIELD WAY
Following on from Volume 1, we will be taking you further through Royston’s historical trail. After stop 1, St John the Baptist Church, the trail tells you to turn right out of the main gate of the church and follow the flint churchyard wall to reach Melbourn Street. You then are told to turn left towards a main set of traffic lights. The road you are on, used to be the boundary between Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire, as Royston was split between the shires until 1896. An interesting thing about this stop on the trail is that it references the blue plaque, above where a grille is, which leads down to one of Royston’s most interesting piece of history, Royston Cave.

Royston Cave is a massive part of Royston’s history, with people visiting from all over the country to see it. But many people living in the local area are unaware of this important piece of history, which is just on the doorstep, or should we say, under our doorstep. Royston Cave was discovered by accident in 1742 by workmen, a millstone was found in the ground, which when lifted, uncovered a well like shaft. They found toeholds cut into the chalk to form stairs. A small boy volunteered to be the first one to go down, to which he found it to be filled with earth and debris. Expecting to find treasure, the cave was cleared out which revealed carvings on the walls. The current entrance tunnel was dug in 1790 to allow easier access for visitors. Royston Cave remains an enigma; no records of its age or purpose exist. The carvings on the wall give indication to the timings, although the exact year cannot be pin pointed, and many people interested in history have come up with theories as to what exactly the cave’s purpose was. Some of the carvings can be made out, such as St Christopher, St Katherine, St Laurence and St George, as well as a panel that references the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, but many of the smaller drawings remain a mystery and are up for interpretation. Many people have studied the cave, but above all it really does remain a mystery to most. So if you live locally, or if you don’t and haven’t been down to marvel at this wonderful piece of history make sure you take advantage of this opportunity.

It’s back on our screens. It feels like ages since season 2 left us on a knife-edge with every character’s stories. Now we have some answers and a lot of new questions to keep us hooked. Sex Education follows the lives of teenage kids as they deal with life and their raging hormones. Tackling the ups and downs of real life in this clever and funny sitcom. So honest and heartfelt you can’t not love it. Every character has a part to play as the relationships between classmates, teachers and family are explored. Tackling some big real-life issues about sex and the LQBTQIA commuinty, Sex Education, season 3 has once again hit the spot (pun intended).
An absolute classic must-see. If you haven’t already watched it over and over again, then you will. With some of cinemas greatest lines; ‘Show me the money’ and ‘you had me at hello.’ This ‘96 film stars Tom Cruise as a sports agent, who after a moment of madness and honesty finds himself with only one client American football star Rod Tidwell, played by the great Cuba Gooding Jr. The two share all the ups and downs of the proffessional sports world from the NFL draft to every game, where an injury could ruin everything for both of them. In the end love and loyalty conquer all. ‘You are my ambassador of Quan’. Watch it, love it, you won’t regret it.

Loving in stereo JUNGLE
POP ROCK / 2021 / 10 TRACKS / 38MINS
ELECTRONIC / 2021 / 14 TRACKS / 40MINS
John Mayers eigth studio album is a homage to the old classic sound of 80’s rock. Think Phil Collins, Duran Duran, Fleetwood Mac and combine that with modern day life and heartbreak. Heavy on the reverb and whaling sounds of John’s Fender Stratocaster, easy listening lyrics and guitar solos. John Mayer manages to deliver a nice balance of classic rock with a modern sound.
For their third studio album, Jungle have delivered more of the same… This is by no means a bad thing. This album delivers a perfect blend of electronic beats, soulful sounds and the occasional chilled lyrics to sing along to. A great soundtrack to your end of summer blues. It lifts you up and puts a smile on your face.
