Annual Fund 2021/2022

An enriching Stonyhurst education comes from a community of learning both in and out of the classroom, where we strive to maximise a rich and varied co-curricular programme to its fullest. Each year, the Annual Fund seeks to support this cocurricular programme and extend still further the richness and variety of the programme. We wish to ignite and nurture the flame of each individual pupil across the age range. Each year we take another step in our quest to inspire the individual in their all-round personal growth. Ultimately, we are seeking to discover and nurture each pupil's gifts and unlock potential wherever it may be. We hope that you might be able to consider supporting one or more of these options, knowing that your gift however large or small, will make a tangible difference to the lives of our pupils.

Many thanks,

John Browne Headmaster of Stonyhurst

Practice Makes Perfect £30,000 A Dedicated Cricket Net System for Stonyhurst St Mary's Hall

Patience, Perseverance and Tenacity £20,000 A Golf Simulator

The boys and girls of St Mary's Hall are keen and wonderfully enthusiastic cricketers. We know that only good practice makes perfect and this state-ofthe-art set of nets at St Mary's Hall will allow generations of young cricketers to improve their skills and grow in confidence as they take their next step towards the test match arena. This new system will allow our cricket coaches to provide year round coaching sessions within a high quality facility that provides an environment for superior technical development. When the Ribble Valley rain stops play on the field, the nets can still be used to provide coaching and practice.

Golf is an increasingly popular sport as well as pastime amongst our pupils. The game demands concentration, planning, risk management and patience! Over recent years our golf teams have gained considerable momentum in regional and national competitions. We are extremely fortunate to have our own golf course within the grounds of Stonyhurst. However, the Ribble Valley weather often prevents play – it rains here a lot! As a consequence we are very keen to purchase a golf simulator enabling more boys and girls to enjoy golf at Stonyhurst whatever the weather! Additionally the simulator would provide further learning opportunity through technical analysis and error correction.

For many years our pupils have enjoyed the tranquil and skilful pastime of fishing at the College. Last year’s Annual Fund appeal, resulted in gifts of Fly Fishing rods allowing more of our pupils to begin fishing on the Hodder. Following the restoration of the ponds in front of the College, we now wish to restock them so that pupils may return to fishing there whilst enjoying the beautiful view of the College estate.

The Embroidered Meadow

This Autumn, the field behind the Jesuit Gardens will be re-wilded as part of Stonyhurst’s commitment to Caring for Our Common Home. The wildflower meadow will recreate its historic predecessor, using the same kinds of flowers and the traditional sun-ray pattern pathways that were typical of such reflective gardens. The Stonyhurst community will use this space during Retreats, environmental learning activities and to take time for quiet reflection and contemplation. Similarly, it will support our pupils' connection to their natural environment and further opportunity for environmental learning. We are asking for four benches to be donated, for use by visitors to the garden.

Replanting the Mission Garden We are very grateful to our Parent Social committee drawn from across Stonyhurst. These volunteers work tirelessly arranging social and informative events enjoyed by our current and past parent community. As a body they play a very active role in supporting the Development Team fundraising strategy. During the academic year 2021/2022 funds raised by the Social Committee will be used to create and improve the outdoor space at Stonyhurst St Mary’s Hall. Fundraising activities will include: Tolkien Trail Walks Festive Lunch – Thursday 2nd December An Inaugural Golf Day

The Gift of Education The Stonyhurst Foundation Transforming Lives St Ignatius, the founder of the Jesuits, wanted to make Jesuit education as widely available as possible. We are proud to have remained true to this objective since the school's foundation by providing bursaries. Granting such awards constitutes an increasingly heavy demand on our finances and there is a limit to the number of children that we can support from school funds. Therefore, The Stonyhurst Foundation was launched on the 31st July 2020, the Feast of St Ignatius, with the intention of removing financial barriers, making a Stonyhurst education available to as many young people as possible. A Stonyhurst education transforms lives and ultimately enables more young people to step beyond the walls of Stonyhurst with purpose and help make our world a better place. All bursary donations received under the Annual Fund will be transferred to the Foundation where they will be endowed to support bursary provision in perpetuity. The Story of the Oldest Museum in the English-Speaking World £10,000 The Henry VII Cope The magnificent Henry VII Cope, on loan to the Stonyhurst Collections from the British Jesuit Province, is the foundation stone of the Collections, and the Cope is known to have been at St Omers as early as 1609. The Cope will be the centrepiece of a new display by the Collections, located in the Do Room, the heart of the school. Its display will demonstrate the breadth of the Collections and tell the stories associated with the growth of the museum, its key and unique role in the cultural, educational and spiritual life of the College since the 17th century, highlighting the importance of former donors and collectors.

Equipment: A magnificent, bespoke, light, temperature and humidity controlled display case allowing the Cope to be displayed in 3D splendour for our pupils and visitors to enjoy, whilst ensuring the highest conservation standards are maintained.

This cope is the first recorded illustration of the Jesuits' long history as 'keepers of memory' of British Catholic material and spiritual culture. Dr Jan Graffius

Faith & Ethos

As Much as We Can

Stonyhurst is rightfully proud of its twenty two St Omers martyrs, former pupils who showed great strength of character, faithfulness to the truth and love of God and who died for their faith during the 17th Century. We would like to establish a new memorial within the College to the St Omers martyrs as a permanent reminder to our pupils and wider Stonyhurst community of their selflessness, courage and dedication.

"Jesus replied to them: Now the hour has come for the Son of man to be glorified. In all truth I tell you, unless a wheat grain falls into the earth and dies, it remains only a single grain; but if it dies it yields a rich harvest. Anyone who loves his life loses it; anyone who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. Whoever serves me, must follow me, and my servant will be with me wherever I am. If anyone serves me, my Father will honour him."

The College will be establishing a lay community at Stonyhurst, the first of its kind at a UK Jesuit school, for Catholics deeply committed to their Faith and the Jesuit Tradition to give a year of Service here. These “Companions” will be the beating heart of the faith life of the Stonyhurst community, sharing Ignatian Spirituality with our pupils across all aspects of school life, and with the wider Stonyhurst family. We are seeking funds to prepare accommodation for the community to live in, so that they are able to have a private living space, that also gives them the opportunity to gather socially and for prayer.

Equipment: Painting and decorating of a communal living space. Furnishings for bedrooms, a living room and kitchen.
