Stotfold Man’s Incredible Cycle For Charity
On Saturday 9th July, Stotfold’s Devon Stirton-Croft, completed a massive 150 mile long bike ride called 'Coast to Coast in the day' . This was an epic bike ride, fully organised by Open Cycling UK, to cycle from Seascale on the Irish sea, to Whitby, on the North sea. A 150 mile route, with 4,500 meters or 14,750 feet of climbing, over three National Parks -The Lake District, The Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors- taking in some stunning scenery and hills, all in one day!
The cycle route started at 05:00 in Seascale, and took in both Hardknott and Wyrnose Passes, with their 25%+ incline hills ; then onto Lake Windermere with a ferry trip across, before heading out over Kendal, Sedbergh, Garsdale & Northallerton and on to the challenging hills of the North York Moors, before arriving at Whitby 14 hours later at 18:54pm.
Devon chose to take part in this challenge in aid of two Hospices: St Barnabas Hospice, near Worthing, Sussex, who gave palliative care to his Mum, in her last few weeks, as she battled throat cancer; and for Isabel Hospice, in Welwyn Garden City, where Devon's wife, Alison, once worked.
Devon had originally planned to complete this cycling challenge back in 2019, but with only one month to go, he had a cycling accident whilst taking part in a 100 mile cycling Sportive around Birmingham, and broke two of his ribs. Devon deferred his entry until 2020, however Covid 19 prevented him from riding that year. 2021 was again deferred as Devon was recovering from catching Covid.
Waiting for him after the race were his biggest fans, and best support team - his wife Alison, daughter Izzy and cousins from York. Without the support and encouragement from his family, to both motivate him to complete this epic ride, yet alone be a 'cycling widow' during the rest of the year, to get in his many practice rides in with 'Stotfold Cycle Club' , Devon says he would never had been able to achieve this amazing challenge. Afterwards Devon and his family celebrated by having "the best ever" fish & chips at Magpies, in Whitby.
Devon's 'Just Giving' page is still active and accepting donations- see the link at the foot of the page.

Stotfold Table Tennis Club With A Difference.
RPATT - or Retired Persons Afternoon Table Tennis Club to give it it’s full name, was established in 2016 in order to provide a challenging environment for those players that had played table tennis before and who were looking to keep fit and active. The group, now run from the Stotfold Memorial Hall consists of 32 members ranging from a good level club players to enthusiastic competitors.
Players ages range from 64 to 84, with both men and women actively playing on four tables over two days of the week.
RPATT are always looking out for new members, however as the club is made up of experienced players the level of skill is fairly high. New members who are perhaps less experienced can be partnered with alternative clubs in the area which RPATT have a great relationship with.
The group meet Monday’s and Thursday’s with the cost just £4 per week.
If you enjoy a game of table tennis and are an experienced player, you can find out more by emailing RPATT2017@virginmedia.com
