News from Etonbury Academy

These past few weeks Etonbury Academy has achieved THREE Awards, Sports Mark Gold, UK Student Voice Runner up and Eco-Schools Green Flag with Distinction! We have also been awarded a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) project led by the University of Hertfordshire following an application from our school. These opportunities led by our dedicated staff really make a difference to our children’s futures.More about these will follow in the next edition.

We were delighted to host the School Sports Festival for our community and were joined by numerous lower schools in the area, supported by our Secondary Student Sports Leaders. Also in sport we held our Interform Netball and Euros competitions which brings out the best in our children, supporting and playing together. Take a look on our Facebook and Twitter to see them in action.

During this term our children have achieved the highest ever number of Friday Praise Texts in one week. Praise Texts continue to be an important part of recognising our children weekly and acknowledging this by sending home a SMS text to their parents and carers. Achieving at Etonbury is not just about the highest grades, but the effort and work they put in to be the best they can be. We held a ‘Meet Your Mentor’ session across the school also this term for all our children to meet their academic mentor and discuss their progress and achievements at school. This is a really important part of us getting to know our children and giving them the encouragement they deserve to reach their full potential.

Our children have ventured out on trips to Harry Potter World, Belgium, France and the University of Cambridge. Wider events have included our team of technologists who entered the Robot Rumble competition competing against 11 other teams to be awarded Second prize. A fantastic achievement following months of hard work building their robot, congratulations to all our children involved.

At the time of writing we are close to opening our performance of Matilda the Musical, we can’t wait to invite so many of you into the school to see it. We also have visited Baycroft Care Home residents who have had a sneaky preview, and both the children, staff and resident enjoyed the experience. From the community we also welcomed a local lower school to use our facilities and specialist teachers. The children baked biscuits in Food Technology and left with sports certificates of achievement following a PE lesson.

June and July are months that bring us mixed emotions as we say goodbye to our Year 11s and welcome our Lower school children for their transition events. The atmosphere was buzzing on the formal transition day when all the children moved into their new forms. Prior to this, our Year 6s moving up into Secondary had already had taster lessons Art, Food, Design and Technology and Music lessons.

We are thoroughly enjoying welcoming the community into the school, supporting their projects and are always happy to show people around our school. We ran a further secondhand uniform event in support of The NEED Project, a very important charity that supports so many of our families with essential food. Thank you for providing us with tins and monetary donations that really do make a difference. It’s a brilliant community, together we care.
