News from Roecroft Lower School
A very warm welcome to the August edition of the Roecroft news.
The end of another school year has come and gone. I am a big believer in reflection and reflecting on the past year it has been one filled with welcome change in comparison to the previous two years we all experienced. The staff and children have achieved so much and are all ready for new challenges when we return in September. An enormous ‘Good Luck!’ to our Year 4 leavers, who had a wonderful send-off over July. Continue to make brave choices and do things with kindness. Reach for the stars! Wishing you all a wonderful Summer, Mrs Cross.

This month we have updates from our Key Stage 2 year group Phase leaders:
In Year 3, we started summer term with a trip to the STEM Discovery Centre in Stevenage. This provided a fantastic opportunity to explore areas of Science and Technology and the children had a great time working with interactive exhibits covering the themes of Space, Energy, Materials, Forces and Magnetism. We also got viewing access to the Mars Yards test area, where we got to view the prototype rovers that Airbus engineers are testing as part of the ExoMars project. The children also got to create their own rockets and launch them, which was great fun!
In Geography, the children have been learning about South America and the Amazon Rainforest. We researched many of the animals that live in the rainforest, studied the different layers and produced a nice rainforest collage. In History we have been studying the Maya civilisation in Central America. The children finished the topic by making Maya masks out of balloons and modrock – it was very messy and great fun! On Step Up day, the children got to meet their new Year 4 teachers and are now getting prepared for the move to their next year group. We hope everyone has a great summer and comes back refreshed and ready to learn in September. Mr Stephen
In Year 4, we had a wonderful summer term with lots of exciting activities to celebrate our Year 4 children leaving and moving onto the next step of their learning journey at middle school! Before the end of year celebrations began, we enjoyed our new history topic 'The Ancient Egyptians' . We focussed on Egyptian society and answered big questions such as 'Who was the most significant pharaoh?' and 'Was the River Nile key to Ancient Egypt's success?' We also had a topic day where the children had great fun dressing up and performing a burial complete with a life-size coffin! In English, we explored Egyptologist Howard Carter and wrote diaries pretending we were the ones to discover Tutankhamun's tomb. Another highlight of the term was exploring levers and linkages in DT and creating persuasive moving posters, the children showed great passion for looking after the world and persuading people to become more eco-friendly citizens. On Geography Day, we also enjoyed researching Canada and creating travel brochure posters using our new-found knowledge. In July, as well as putting on our Leavers show for parents 'The Roecroft Late Late Show' , we had a party on the playground with a disco and ice cream van and created yearbooks as a memento of the children's time at Roecroft. I would like to again take the opportunity to wish our wonderful Year 4 leavers the very best of luck at their new schools! Miss Hougton.
