News from Fairfield Lower School

This term is always a busy one in school and the children have enjoyed all kinds of learning experiences these last few weeks. The WOW days that children participate in to mark the beginning of new topics and get excited about the learning to come have been plentiful and varied. Armed with their train tickets, the Year 1s took an imaginary train ride to London, taking into the sights and subsequently sculpting these from clay. We’ve also seen our KS2 children feast on a roman banquet, make roman sandals and mosaics and learn how to wear a toga in readiness for exploring the concept of power and how it has influenced us today. Early Years have been exploring celebrations and sharing their personal experiences of festivities at home. We also celebrated Diwali across the school, with our Early Years children creating diva lamps and Year 3s creating masks and acting out the story of Rama and Sita. A rite of passage in lower school is for children to put on a heart-warming Christmas performance and get everyone into the Christmas spirit. This year has been no exception; we’ve seen children polishing off their performance skills and for some they’ve surmounted their fears and stood on a stage for the very first time to participate in a show - all the children have excelled in their achievements and we hope that our families, while they couldn’t be with us in person, have enjoyed viewing them from the comfort of their own home.

Finally, it’s a thank you to our children and community. Your demonstration of values has been particularly evident this term; you have continued to show flexibility and resilience in the face of changing times (again!) due to the increase in COVID cases in our area over the last few months. Thank you to everyone, particularly our children who have taken to adjusting routines with respect and understanding.
