Our World, Our Equal Future February 22nd every year, as all good Girl-Guiders know, is World Thinking Day. Three years ago, the Methodist Church were privileged to host a service for World Thinking Day. The theme was friendship. The service included verses from the Bible that, I confess, did not know prior to that day:
A loyal friend is like a safe shelter; find one, and you have found a treasure. Nothing else is as valuable; there is no way of putting a price on it. A loyal friend is like a medicine that keeps you in good health. (Sirach 6.14-16)
World Thinking Day 2022 “Our World, Our Equal Future”, calls for “for climate action and gender equality; in our lives and in the world”*. I would argue that this theme is also friendship, but on a bigger scale. Surely friendship is about how we treat each other, and this includes working for equality for women and girls in a very unequal world. And it includes the facts showing that women are much more affected by climate change than men (for example, most casualties from increasing extreme climate events are women.) Guiding and Scouting involves dedication and hard work, but is so essential. Let’s encourage and support those who give their time and resources for uniformed groups. This generation needs all the help they can get. Graham.
