Founded in 2005 by the James Barry Robinson Trust, Saint Patrick is an independent Catholic school with an enrollment of approximately 400 students in grades Pre-Kindergarten through Eight. We are committed to educating the whole child through our distinct model for educational success that allows us to celebrate the gifts of every child. Enrollment is open to children from all faith traditions, Catholic and non-Catholic alike, and spiritual instruction is designed to help the child as well as the family as they continue along their own faith journey. Saint Patrick Catholic School admits qualified students of any race, color, gender, ethnicity, national origin, or disability (if reasonable accommodations can be assumed by the school).
DEAR FRIENDS OF SAINT PATRICK CATHOLIC SCHOOL,
Having completed my first year as Head of School, I remain steadfast in my belief that I found a School where children feel safe and loved, where lessons in faith and character lead to service and leadership, and where students learn to live not just with each other but for each other. Saint Patrick’s intentional balance of academics, athletics, fine arts, and a nurturing environment transforms students into confident and productive citizens who bring a growth mindset to all that they do. During my first year, I marveled at the Wolfhound faculty and staff who inspire students to push through challenges and model faith in action daily. At times, I struggled to keep pace with the vibrancy of our faith-learning community and felt blessed to have so many welcoming and supportive administrators, board members, and parents to support me as I learned the true value of a Saint Patrick education.
In a quest to learn the secret behind Saint Patrick’s success, I immersed myself in every aspect of School life! I visited classrooms, chaperoned retreats and field trips, cheered at athletic events, applauded musical performances and concerts, and participated in annual celebrations such as the Fiesta Latina, Earth Day, STEM Day, Feast on the Feast, and Field Day. Fun and fundraisers, such as Returning Thanks, Alumni gatherings, and Evenings at Saint Patrick classes revealed more about the Wolfhound community’s commitment and generosity. In my pursuit to understand what makes Saint Patrick tick, I even braved the icy water of the Dunk Tank on Field Day to mirror the Wolfhound mentality, i.e., grit in the face of adversity!
From the early days of the Faculty Retreat, parent coffees, and my first “Boo Hoo Woo Hoo” to Eighth Grade Panel Presentations, Baccalaureate Mass, and Commencement, the love for all things Saint Patrick never waned. I could have just read the mission statement to understand the secret behind our School’s success, but then I would not have captured the true scope of curiosity, creativity, spirituality, and joy of the Wolfhound experience or the essence of the community that keeps it all moving forward!
Saint Patrick Catholic School opened its doors 19 years ago and continues to grow! This past year brought a number of accomplishments and signs of a healthy and sustainable future! Some of these included:
Exceeded our 2022-2023 Annual Fund goal by $30,000
Enrollment reached 409 for 2023-2024 school year
Provided $793,883 in Financial Assistance to 123 students last year (31%).
Endowment Fund topped $7 million
Increased Campus Security with schoolwide door and camera replacements/maintenance; new AEDs and crisis training for faculty, staff and board members
Refurbished and redecorated the Towne Bank Atrium and completed four classroom upgrades as part of a plan to update every classroom in the school
I feel truly blessed to have the opportunity to serve and lead Saint Patrick Catholic School and am looking forward to a happy and productive year ahead!
With Gratitude and Appreciation,
Lauren MazzariLIFE OF Mind

Highlights From our Banner Year: 2022-2023
Class of 2018, delivered the commencement speech at our Eighth Grade Graduation on June 3.
Evenings at Saint Patrick offered a robust roster of classes and experiences for adults in our community. These quality enrichment classes covered various topics, including cooking, wine, regional history, travel opportunities, and more, raising money for Saint Patrick Catholic School Financial Assistance.
On December 19, 2022, over 40 of our graduates (21 and older) came together for the annual Alumni Happy Hour at O’Connor Brewing. On Sunday, May 21, 2023, 50 Saint Patrick Catholic School graduates joined us on campus for the Wolfhound Alumni Reunion.
We celebrated our military students during April, the month of the Military Child, with a “Military Munchkins” morning for students and their military family members, a demonstration by the ODU Drill team, and a “Purple Up” Day. Students in Kindergarten through Eighth Grade participated in a collaborative art project and other fun activities to honor our military students.
LIFE OF SPIRIT
We celebrated Catholic Schools Week with daily activities that united our School in prayer, fellowship, and faith. Catholic Schools Week kicked off with a piano concert by Chris Kypros and we continued to celebrate throughout the week with a special Mass, art projects, dress like a Saint or Jesus day, and other fun activities. This celebratory week culminated with a “How well do you know the Pope?” Pep Rally. Our Religion teachers outdid themselves, teaching the
history, Canon Law, and importance of faith in our lives, as well as the value of Catholic education.
The Dedication of the Eighth Grade Legacy Statue of “Madonna and Child,” a sculpture by Timothy P. Schmalz, was held on June 2, 2023. Bricks with the Eighth Grade students’ names were placed near the statue, which is located in front of the school. Grade-level spiritual retreats were held for Fifth through Eighth Grade students.
The Prayer Buddy tradition continued pairing Seventh and Eighth Grade students with Kindergarten and First Grade. The older students look after and serve as role models for our Wolfhound Pups.
Christian Unity Day was celebrated on January 25, 2023. We were joined by 14 pastors from area parishes and churches.
LIFE OF VOCATION
For the fourth year, Saint Patrick Catholic School was awarded the Pearl School Award by Lynnhaven River NOW in recognition of the School’s dedication to environmental sustainability through actions from our teachers and students.
The School earned a Resilient River Star award from the Elizabeth River Project for its commitment to wildlife restoration across the watershed, becoming lifelong river stewards by conducting river-friendly projects and initiatives.
Led by the Celtic Council Student Government, we collected over 390 toys for the Marine Toys 4 Tots program for disadvantaged children.
The Operation Smile Club held several fundraisers raising over $3,000 which will provide 12 life-changing surgeries and comprehensive cleft care including orthodontics, speech therapy, and psychosocial care.
Servant Leadership was alive and well with over 10 initiatives, including, but not limited to: Locks of Love, where students donate six or more inches of hair for those suffering from alopecia, cancer treatment, and burn trauma; Sweets for Sailors, which collected and sent prepackaged sweets to sailors on deployment; Morning Meals for the Homeless, where breakfast items were collected for local churches to provide meals for those experiencing homelessness; a Volleyball Pink Out for breast cancer awareness; and Kicks for Kids, where students led a shoe drive to provide footwear for children in need.
As a school, we were able to provide 2,000 donated food items to local food banks.
As part of the Eighth Grade Retreat in September, students visited a Migrant Farm Camp. It was a very eye-opening and humbling experience for the entire group. For weeks prior to the retreat, the students collected clothes, shoes, and toiletries to distribute to the migrant workers and their families. The experience always serves as a powerful reminder of how fortunate and blessed we all are and students learn from interacting with people who embody humility, gratitude, and hard work.

Shared Values & Lasting Connections
BY LAUREN MAZZARI, HEAD OF SCHOOLWHEN I FIRST ACCEPTED THE POSITION AS HEAD OF SCHOOL AND MOVED FROM MONTCLAIR, THE PLACE MY FAMILY AND I CALLED HOME FOR OVER 30 YEARS, I TOOK A LEAP OF FAITH, ONE THAT MY HUSBAND REMINDED ME FREQUENTLY CAME WITH RISK.
During our initial visit to Saint Patrick, interactions with faculty, students, parents and board members, as well as the tour of the beautiful campus, impressed both of us. For months leading up to our move to Virginia, I continued to learn about Saint Patrick from 360 miles away. Everything I read or heard about the School described it as a place that recognized every child’s gifts, embraced its Catholic identity, and valued the Total Formation of its students. The question remained though, would that initial impression withstand closer inspection?
To me, it all came down to whether or not Saint Patrick Catholic School truly lived its mission statement. The words “Saint Patrick educates and nurtures the whole child - mind, body, and spirit - to be a Christ-centered, compassionate and courageous servant leader” promised so much. Perhaps years in education left me skeptical that any School could achieve such a lofty goal, especially after the challenges of Covid left most schools reeling and communities feeling disconnected.
Having completed my first year, I feel proud, grateful, and a bit relieved to report, Saint Patrick’s mission guides every lesson taught, every interaction shared, every program developed, and even every dream hoped for the future. A deep commitment to the shared values explains the lasting connections between faculty, staff, Board members, students, and parents, past and present. Even with the day-to-day scrutiny of examining the School from every angle, I found
no inconsistencies or gaps where we break from the vision and guiding beliefs integral to the success of this all-important mission.
From a distance, living by the principles of a Glasser Quality School, the foundational beliefs underpinning day-to-day operations, and the tenets of the Graduate at Graduation, emphasizing the Life Of’s as a means to self-actualization essential to the mission, seems daunting. The very idea that servant leadership, compassion, faith, and courage lead to happiness and fulfillment runs counter to the messaging bombarding young people daily. I remained skeptical that Saint Patrick’s mission could provide the essential formula for lives well lived; that is, until I saw faculty, staff, Board members, parents, and alumni bringing it to life again and again each day in word and in deed.
The shared values of the School’s community create a positive climate and supportive environment where students feel confident taking risks and making mistakes as part of the learning process. All learning stems from trusting relationships between students and faculty, as well as School and families, and instills a long view mentality that seems so opposite to that of the quick gratification so many seek. Values such as the importance of faith, family, and Catholic education explain why so many of our Wolfhounds return to Saint Patrick to give back to their community and keep their connections alive.
To spend time on campus is to witness the mission and those vital connections in action! Across my first year, alumni returned to the classrooms to share their enthusiasm for everything from theatre and Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) to service and faith. Exemplifying connections to the Life of Mind, Vocation, Spirit, Relationship and Physical Life, alumni shared their passion and talents with current Wolfhounds, inspiring them with the latest in science research and service projects that support sustainability, such as the solar panel installation on the Hammond Outdoor Classroom.
During the year, Middle School Assembly guest speakers encouraged students to live healthy and productive lives. Students listened to presentations ranging from medical students identifying the health risks attributed to sun exposure to a recent graduate of Virginia Tech relating his faith journey which began at Saint Patrick. Combining a love of faith and education, Alumna Margaret Lassalle joined our teaching staff as the new kindergarten theology teacher. All our returning alumni noted that a fulfilling life meant more than a lucrative salary; they found joy and purpose in caring for others.
During my inaugural year, I experienced first hand the Wolfhound alumni tradition of making lasting connections by volunteering their time and talent. I watched as alumni shared their talent and love for soccer and field hockey, as well as basketball and tennis! Parents and alumni coaches make our athletics program possible and teach our Wolfhounds about teamwork, sportsmanship, and healthy lifestyles while making lasting connections, one game or practice at a time.
Nowhere else are lasting connections more visible than in our Fine and Performing Arts
program. Last year, accomplished Alumni musicians, singers, and performers returned to the stage to share their talent and passion with the entire Wolfhound community. Some alumni sang for the showcase portion of the Princeton Nassoons concert; still others returned for an encore at Saint Patrick to raise money for the musical production Beauty and the Beast. Giving back comes naturally to our performers!
Even during the summer and after school hours, Wolfhound alumni are hard at work. At least 15 Wolfhound Alumni returned to help with Wolfhound Weeks, our successful summer camp program, and/or Extended Care. Sharing great memories with former classmates and making new ones for current Wolfhounds, these alumni are instrumental in building community, providing fun, and consistently modeling the values they learned as part of their Saint Patrick education.
Last year, Saint Patrick created an Alumni Council to help keep those connections strong across many years of Wolfhound graduates! To help grow this potential connection with Alumni, we began a new tradition last May by inducting the Class of 2023 into the Wolfhound Alumni Family. We hope to bring more representatives from each of the 18 graduating classes since 2008 onto the Alumni Council.
Countless examples of service, leadership, faith, and compassion provide clear evidence of the mission statement in action. Shared values and lasting connections help keep Saint Patrick affordable and accessible to all who seek a quality independent Catholic education for years to come. Like the mission statement, the mantra “Once a Wolfhound, always a Wolfhound!” is not just an empty phrase but a lived reality.
