BARS YOU CHECK OUT

ENIGMA

1110 Central Ave, St. Petersburg, FL 33705 Perhaps the new evening epicenter of social activity, Enigma is the go-to spot in the middle of St. Pete. Great house music, stiff drinks, hot friends, and good times. Gay men, women and allies pack this joint nightly with their 2 for 1 happy hour and nightly drag shows, and the bar expands to a full-fledged dance club in the late evenings. The crowd gets pretty diverse and is within walking distance to over twenty other watering holes in the new, LGBT+ welcoming EDGE District.

THE GARAGE

2729 Central Ave, St. Petersburg, FL 33713

THE PRO SHOP PUB

840 Cleveland St, Clearwater, FL 33755 The oldest gay bar in Tampa Bay (just celebrated its 40th) attracts a mixed-gender crowd ranging from visiting college kids to older gents in Florida-chic. Drive too fast on Cleveland Street and you’ll miss it – a game outpost, brick and glass block with only “Pro Shop” in neon lights. And that’s by design as the pub’s obscurity was part of a defense mechanism decades ago for men who went there to avoid bigoted attacks elsewhere. Today the bar is well-known in the area, and snowbirds and locals alike flock to this low-key Clearwater favorite. If you’re in town for a weekend, or just want to take a glimpse at what going out looked like when we couldn’t be out, then take a stroll to Clearwater to experience the Pro Shop Pub.

Images from top left: The 2016 Grand Marshals get in a round of pool at Enigma; The Garage shows its support for the LGBT+ community in the bay area with its painted rainbow sidewalk.

After a long night out with friends, the Garage is the perfect place to conclude your evening. The bar is home to late night karaoke, free pool, an expansive outdoor patio, and quick access to the beaches and downtown. The bar draws a mixed age group for well-priced happy hour and is jukebox heavy on current pop favorites and lesbian standards such as K.D. Lang and Melissa Etheridge.

Right: Our 2016 Grand Marshals enjoy a beer at the newly opened Dog Bar on Central Ave.

THE DOG BAR

2300 Central Ave, St. Petersburg, FL 33712 No drag queens or house pumping music here. Instead, they offer water bowls and a dog park for man’s best friend. With eight TVs giving you a reason to sit and stay, and astroturf and a playground for your pup to run wild, the Dog Bar is a truly unique spot to enjoy an ice cold Bud Light. This bar is a first for St. Pete, and really makes you think “Oh, how fun!” The location is a former gas station, which you can thank for its welcoming, wide-open feel with the roll-up doors and overhang.

DRINK UP

PUNKY’S GRILLE

3063 Central Ave, St. Petersburg, FL 33713 Beginning an evening out, or just dinner with friends on a Wednesday, Punky’s offers daily lunch and dinner specials that will surely satisfy your taste buds. Just down the street from the former Georgie’s Alibi, this bar and grille offers a fresh take on the concept with the familiar Kenwood crowd. Weekly bingo, patio parties and drag shows await the Punksters who enjoy good food, 2 for 1 happy hour, and a fun, low-key atmosphere.

Experience more of the amazing food, bars, attractions and nightlife that the Tampa Bay area has to offer. Check out our Area Map (page 40) for more great reccommendations. STPETEPRIDE.COM

Bow-tied bartenders serving classic Manhattans in coupe glasses for an eclectic clientele may be a familiar scene now — as it was more than a century ago — but it took a long time for the cocktail to come back to its full glory. For years we’ve relied on well vodka mixed with tonic, cranberry or Red Bull due to their quick turnaround and cheap prices. This culture has created some pretty lazy bartenders and some very generic cocktail parties. And although this may still be a standard for today’s college gatherings, the ever evolving and demanding Millennial Generation is bringing back the cocktail culture of long ago creating a classic feel for gatherings and a new standard for bartenders.

MUST-HAVE FINANCIAL CONVERSATIONS PRESENTED BY WELLS FARGO FOR SAME-SEX COUPLES

So you’re thinking about getting married. Before the big day arrives, make sure you and your partner sit down for a serious financial discussion. To help you get started, we’ve outlined six key areas to address with your partner.

COVER THE BASICS

What to discuss. Your tax advisor can help you determine how your combined incomes will affect your tax bracket. Specifically, whether marriage might trigger a “marriage penalty” — potentially increasing your tax burden — or a “bonus” that helps reduce your taxes.

What to discuss. Each of you should share information on the following: • Income • Regular expenses • Existing debt, what you consider an acceptable level of debt, and under what circumstances you feel it’s okay to borrow • Saving strategy and saving priorities • Short- and long-term goals • Approach to investing and tolerance for investment risk • Your preferred standard of living • At what dollar threshold you need to check in with your partner before making a purchase • Whether to have joint bank and investment accounts, keep them separate, or take a mixed approach

Also: Your tax advisor can help you evaluate “head of household” and “married filing separately” options.

Why it’s important. Understanding your combined finances, as well as each other’s money management habits, can alert you to areas of potential conflict and also sets the context for discussions on bigger picture topics.

TACKLE TAXES

Why it’s important. Since the Obergefell ruling in June 2015, same-sex married couples can now file joint returns at both the federal and state levels. While that simplifies matters, it also means that marriage could have a more significant impact — for better or for worse — on your tax picture.

REVIEW RETIREMENT PLANS

Why it’s important. You and your partner need to understand each other’s vision of a good retirement — and how you’ll achieve it. What to discuss. Share information on current retirement investments. Discuss your end financial goal and how much you’ll each need to save on a monthly or annual basis to get there. Know that private, state, and local government employers are required to give same-sex and heterosexual married couples equal access to retirement plan benefits. Similarly, married same-sex couples will now be eligible for spousal Social Security benefits. Also. Review the beneficiary and surviving-spouse rights for any retirement or pension plans. Work with your Financial Advisor and tax advisor to develop a plan that can help maximize retirement while positively impacting your tax picture. CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE

CONTINUED FROM PREVIOUS PAGE

INVESTIGATE HEALTH INSURANCE

Why it’s important. The Obergefell ruling means same-sex married couples should now have the same health insurance coverage options as heterosexual married couples. However, with this benefit in place, employers may not continue offering benefits to domestic partners, couples in civil unions, or other unmarried couples. What to discuss. Compare insurance coverage options from each partner’s employer to determine the best combination of coverage and cost for your needs.

ESTABLISH AN ESTATE PLAN

Why it’s important. An estate plan helps ensure that your assets are managed as you wish, now and later. What to discuss. A legal spouse often has specific inheritance rights under state law you may want to review with your estate planning attorney. Work with the attorney to complete at least the following four documents: • A durable power of attorney • A will • A healthcare power of attorney • A living will You and your partner should review your estate plan every few years or when you experience significant life events, such as marriage or children; as your estate value increases; or as your financial goals change. Also. Same-sex married couples will now qualify for the unlimited marital deduction, which allows a surviving spouse to avoid potential estate taxes upon his or her spouse’s death.*

DISCUSS A PRENUPTIAL AGREEMENT

Why it’s important. This can be a difficult topic to address, since it implies the relationship may not last. But it’s an important way to help protect each person’s personal wealth. What to discuss. Discuss what assets each partner will bring into the marriage and how those, as well as future earnings or assets, might be split in the event of a divorce. Your attorney can help you both determine if this document is appropriate for your situation. Also. Discussing a prenuptial agreement could help facilitate other conversations about finances and your relationship.

PLANING CAN HAVE ITS PAYOFF

Discussing these financial topics before you decide to get married can help you walk down the aisle with a firm financial foundation underfoot — and set the stage for financial harmony in your relationship. * Always consult your tax advisor. ** Always consult a financial advisor. 1 “The Changing Landscape of Marriage and Money for Affluent LGBT Americans, 2015 National Survey,” June 2015, conducted by Wells Fargo Additional sources:“Findings From the 2015 LGBT Public Release Study,” May 22, 2015, conducted by Versta Research for Wells Fargo Bank, N.A.“6 Financial Issues All Same-Sex Couples Should Discuss,” by Emily Starbuck Crone, Nerdwallet, updated July 7, 2015, https://www. nerdwallet.com/blog/finance/money-nerd/retirement/6-financial-issues-samesex-couples-discuss/, accessed Aug. 11, 2015“Retirement Benefits,” Marriage Equality FAQs, http://marriageequalityfacts.org/topic/retirement/, accessed Aug. 10, 2015“How the Supreme Court Ruling Impacts the Finances of Same-Sex Couples,” published June 26, 2015, http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/news/2015/06/how-the-supremecourt-ruling-affect, accessed June 30, 2015“How SCOTUS’ Same-Sex Ruling Will Impact Couples’ Finances,” by Kelley Holland, published June 26, 2015, http://www.cnbc.com/2015/06/26/how-scotus-same-sex-ruling-will-impact-couples-finances.html, accessed June 30, 2015 Wells Fargo Advisors does not offer legal or tax advice.

UNRAVELING THE MYSTERY OF THE + SIGN

LGBT+

THE TERMS 'LESBIAN,' 'GAY,' 'BISEXUAL' AND 'TRANSGENDER' ARE BECOMING MORE AND MORE RECOGNIZED IN THE WESTERN WORLD. HOWEVER, THERE ARE MANY ADDITIONAL SEXUAL ORIENTATIONS AND GENDER IDENTITIES, OFTEN CONDENSED INTO A + SIGN FOR EASE, OR ELSE LEFT OUT OF THE LGBT ACRONYM COMPLETELY. IT’S AN EXHAUSTIVE AND GROWING ACRONYM, LGBTTIQQ2SPDGAA* AND COUNTING. AND HERE WE EXPLORE SOME OF THE MOST COMMON AND LITTLE KNOWN SEXUAL AND GENDER IDENTITIES INCLUDED IN THE + SIGN.

A

A ASEXUAL

DEMISEXUAL

Although it’s still being defined, the term demisexuality is a sexual orientation in which someone feels sexual attraction only to people with whom they have an emotional bond. Most demisexuals feel sexual attraction rarely compared to the general population, and some have little to no interest in sexual activity.

GENDERFLUIDITY

The term asexual refers to somebody who does not feel sexual attraction towards others. An asexual person might wish to have a relationship, and might even enjoy physical acts like handholding and kissing; other asexuals do not wish to engage in any romantic relationships. Asexual people are often pressured into unwanted sex.

People who identify as genderfluid typically identify as neither male nor female. They may choose to change their name or keep their birth name; equally they might choose to use an alternative pronoun such as 'they' or 'ze’. It is important to respect chosen names and pronouns, as mis-pronouning a person shows a lack of respect towards their identity.

*

GENDERFUCK

Usually found only following the word Trans, but often after LGBT in replace of the +, the asterisk makes special note in an effort to include all transgender, non-binary, and gender nonconforming identities. This includes all those listed and not listed here.

“WITH EACH GENERATION, PEOPLE SEE THEIR SEXUALITY AS LESS FIXED IN STONE.

- YOUGOV.CO.UK

Slang for ‘gender bender’, this is used to describe a person's gender identity (as in male, female, no gender, queer) or the act of consciously and conspicuously challenging traditional ideas of the gender binary through androgyny, hyperbole, and cross-dressing.

GENDER-QUEER

A gender-queer person either identifies as being both male and female, neither male nor female, or something in between these two identities. Somebody who is gender-queer transcends the 'gender binary’, that is, the concept that there are only two genders: male and female, and that these are mutually exclusive. Similar to gender-neutral people, gender-queer people may choose to change their name and pronoun.

INTERSEX

The term intersex replaced the out-dated and negatively charged 'hermaphrodite’. A person who is intersex has both male and female genitalia, and/or has the chromosome pattern XXY. An Intersex person may take hormone supplements or have surgery to match the gender they identify most with, or they may choose to keep their genitalia and natural hormones.

PANSEXUAL

Pansexuality is similar to bisexuality, in that pansexuals are attracted to more than one gender. However, where

+

bisexuals are attracted to the binary genders, male and female, pansexuals can be attracted to genderqueer/neutral people, transgender people and intersex people. Pansexuals are often described as being attracted to a personality rather than a body, however this is a misconception. Pansexuals are attracted to all sexes and gender identities, and experience sexual attraction to bodies, not just personalities.

QUEER

Not to be confused with gender-queer, queer is a term that refers to a person's sexual orientation. Queer can be synonymous with any sexual orientation: gay, lesbian, bisexual, pansexual etc., and can also refer to unspecified sexual attraction. If somebody identifies as queer, it is important not to press that person for details about their sexual orientation, as some people use this label to avoid giving details about their sexual identity. The term queer can be considered offensive, especially by older LGBT+ people, so it is important to only use it when referring to somebody who actually identifies as queer.

QUESTIONING

Questioning simply refers to people who are unsure about their sexual orientation or gender identity. People who are questioning may experience distress, confusion and discomfort; if a loved one comes out as questioning, it is important to be supportive and open-minded, giving the person space to talk if they wish.

celebrate pride with art amplified Visit St. Pete’s #1 attraction, the stunning Dalí Museum on our downtown waterfront. Experience renowned artist Salvador Dalí’s world through an unparalleled collection of his finest works. Explore the Museum’s inspiring architecture, taste authentic. Spanish cuisine, shop, play, and wander… and quench your curiosity for all things Dalí.

TWO-SPIRIT

Two Spirit is a culturally distinct gender that describes Indigenous North Americans who fulfills one of many mixed gender roles found traditionally among many Native Americans and Canadian First Nations indigenous groups. The mixed gender roles encompassed by the term historically included wearing the clothing and performing the work associated with both men and women. Yeah, it’s a lot. But let’s not under appreciate the importance of being respectful of a person's identity and to always use the term they use. Some may argue that too many labels just mud up the waters, which just makes it all that more difficult for true equality and recognition. But there’s a case for finding just the right words for something. In the past, we may have had to approximate it because we weren’t quite certain of just the right word. Now, we can define ourselves more precisely.

Every patient deserves to be treated with dignity Fear of discrimination causes some in the LGBT community to avoid seeking healthcare. Every patient deserves to be treated with dignity. Largo Medical Center and St. Petersburg General Hospital have been recognized as 2016 LGBT Healthcare Equality Leaders by the LGBT Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation, the educational arm of the country’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization. The findings were part of HRC Foundation’s Healthcare Equality Index 2016, a unique annual survey that encourages equal care for LGBT Americans by evaluating inclusive policies and practices related to LGBT patients, visitors and employees.

The hospitals earned top marks in meeting non-discrimination and training criteria that demonstrate its commitment to equitable, inclusive care for LGBT patients, and their families, who can face significant challenges in securing the quality health care and respect they deserve. They are part of a select group of 496 healthcare facilities nationwide to be named Leaders in LGBT Healthcare Equality. The Healthcare Equality Index offers healthcare facilities unique and powerful resources designed to help provide equal care to a long-overlooked group of patients, as well as assistance in complying with regulatory requirements and access to high-quality staff training. The hospitals need to meet all of the HEI Core Four Criteria for LGBT patient-centered care in the Healthcare Equality Index (HEI) 2016, administered by the Human Rights Campaign (HRC).

The first part of the criteria calls for a written patient non-discrimination policy (OR patients’ bill of rights) that includes both “sexual orientation” and “gender identity.” Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people continue to face discrimination in healthcare because of their sexual orientation and/or gender identity, creating a need for explicit non-discrimination policies. The second part of the criteria calls for a written

equal visitation policy. Across the U.S., same-sex couples, same-sex parents and other LGBT people fear that they could

be prevented from visiting their loved ones in healthcare settings because of bias or discomfort on the part of hospital employees regarding same-sex relationships. In 2010, after learning of a tragic incident in which a lesbian was denied visitation to her dying partner, President Barack Obama directed the U.S. Secretary of Health & Human Services to develop regulations protecting the visitation rights of all patients. These regulations are now in effect at all hospitals across the U.S. that accept Medicare or Medicaid payments – the vast majority of facilities.

The third part calls for an employment non-discrimination policy (or an equal employment opportunity policy) that includes both “sexual orientation” and “gender identity.” Such a policy typically covers all conditions of employment, including hiring, promotion, termination and compensation. Federal law does not yet protect employees from discrimination based on real or perceived sexual orientation or gender identity. Furthermore, fewer than half of states have passed laws prohibiting discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation (22 states and the District of Columbia) or gender identity (20 states and the District of Columbia). This Core Four criterion calls on healthcare facilities to protect their LGBT employees from discrimination regardless of state non-discrimination laws. LGBT staff members not only deserve a discrimination free workplace but they also informally educate co-workers, provide valuable guidance to facility leadership and serve as ambassadors to LGBT communities. The fourth part of the criteria calls for key facility employees to receive expert training in LGBT patientcentered care. This criterion recognizes the fact that training is critical for policies to be successful and for truly LGBTwelcoming care to occur. Training programs should offer all incoming and current staff the information and skills they need to provide culturally competent care and services to their LGBT patients. The HEI training requirements vary by facility and are determined by whether or not the facility has previously met the HEI training requirement. During the first year of participation in the HEI training, a facility must have a core group of executive level staff members participate in an online training that covers systemic strategies for delivering LGBT-accessible and -affirming healthcare. In subsequent years, facilities need to demonstrate that they have provided a minimum number of hours of HEI-approved training to any of their staff in LGBT patient-centered care.

LUCAS WEHLE

Lucas Aiden Wehle was born in Florida twenty four years ago as the middle child of three. Although gender roles were traditional in the Wehle household, he never felt like he was one of ‘the Wehle girls’. When he was 18 he became a proud bull at the University of South Florida, where he would eventually earn a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education. This

was the first time he was exposed to the LGBT+ community. Through meeting activists and learning about social justice Lucas learned about alternatives to cisgender heteronormativity. This terrible gap between who he knew he was and how the world perceived him was finally bridged. By transitioning fully into maleness Lucas had, in turn, made a silent pact with community based activism. A pact that promised for every injustice, heartbreak, confused moment he had suffered; however he might be victimized or terrorized or hurt-- he would make a concrete effort to make the world better. He has thus far made good on that pact. While transitioning, Lucas spoke to raise awareness, developed and lead workshops, presented in classes

Friends of the Festival, Inc. (FOF) is a non-profit (501c3) organization that produces the Tampa Bay International Gay, Lesbian Film & Arts Festival, which began in 1990 through the outreach of several local community based organizations. The first Film Festival was created as a fundraiser under

at Universities and K-12 schools, and mentored other trans students. For Lucas, “no one wins unless we all do”. This attitude helped him become elected as Vice President of the Trans+ Student Union in 201415. In recognition of his work in the community he was honored with the 2015 Pride Award in his final semester at USF. Almost immediately following graduation, Lucas began working at Metro Wellness in his dream job as Trans & Youth Coordinator in 2015. His position allows for him to develop and facilitate support and outreach programs, specifically aimed to support gender non-conforming individuals on both sides of the bay.

Currently he facilitates trans support groups, trans partner support groups, LGBT+ youth groups, and trans parent support groups on a weekly basis. In addition to this, he organizes social events to support the LGBT+ community. In his spare time, Lucas continues to mentor trans youth. To honor the pain caused by the division in his family, spurned by his transition, he has continued to work diligently with PFLAG. Most importantly, his cat Shark thinks that he is pretty awesome.

the name Pride Film Festival, followed by Suncoast Film Festival. Then in the late 1990’s became known as the Tampa International Gay and Lesbian Film Festival (TIGLFF) and in 2015 renamed the Tampa Bay International Gay, Lesbian & Arts Film Festival (TIGLFF). Over the course of the past

25 years, TIGLFF has showcased thousands of films for the LGBT community of Tampa Bay. Located primarily at the historic Tampa Theatre on Franklin St., TIGLFF has helped usher in a renaissance of Tampa’s downtown; eventually relocating to the Palladium Theatre downtown St. Petersburg.

M

Miguel, Host of The Miguel Show on Cox Media Group’s HOT 101.5 has a long and rich history of LGBT advocacy, on and off the air.

During his sophomore year at South Georgia College in rural Douglas, Georgia, he started the college’s first Gay-Straight Alliance. There was much opposition from the community, but Miguel felt it was important for the LGBT students at SGC to have a voice. When he moved on to Georgia Southern University to finish his Bachelor’s Degree, Miguel became one of the first openly gay radio personalities on the college radio station 91.9 The Buzz. By his senior year, he hosted his first successful morning show. After college, he moved to Savannah, Georgia to work for 97.3 KISSFM. While living in Savannah, he was involved with the planning of Savannah Pride. In 2008, Miguel made the leap to his first professional radio morning show at Island 106 in Panama City Beach, Florida, joining the cast of ‘That Guy’ Kramer in the Morning. In three years that followed he would become the media point person for Panama City Beach Pride. He also was instrumental in establishing a relationship between the radio station and the only gay club in PCB, a partnership that is still going strong to this day. In 2011, the ‘That Guy’ Kramer Show was called to the major leagues of radio at Tampa Bay’s Play 98.7. In the one year that Miguel was in Tampa Bay, he established partnerships with AIDS Walk Tampa Bay and the Santa Speedo Run. He also starred in a how-to video for HIV Testing with AIDS Service of Pinellas County. After a year in Tampa Bay, Miguel returned back to Panama City Beach to host his own morning show with current co-host Holly O’Connor. In the two years he was in Panama City, Miguel became the first open, gay, African-American radio host to go number one in all key demos. He won the readers’ choice award for Best Radio Personality from both The News Herald and Panama City Living magazine. He also worked with at-risk gay youths at a local Panama City high school. After honing his morning show vision, Miguel returned to Tampa Bay on HOT 101.5 where he has been entertaining listeners since March of 2015. STPETEPRIDE.COM

GREAT BEACHES

A stop at the beach caps off the perfect St Pete Pride Weekend, and we’ve compiled a list of top beaches to enjoy during your stay. Whether you prefer sunsets, white sand, or the pleasantly warm waters of the Gulf, each paradise listed has its own characteristics that make it worth spreading out your beach towel. Photos courtesy of Visit St Pete/Clearwater and The City of St Pete

ST PETE BEACH With miles of sugar-sand beaches, a wide variety of resorts, dining and sightseeing options, unlimited watersports and lively beach bars, St. Pete Beach is a major paradise pick. Voted TripAdvisor’s #4 Beach in the U.S. in 2016 and No. 1 Beach in the U.S. and No. 5 in the world in 2012, this classic Florida vacation destination offers something for everyone.

PASS-A-GRILLE Peaceful Pass-a-Grille Beach, just south of lively St. Pete Beach, is a tiny beach town with Old Florida charm. Come here to kick back and relax with the gulls and the terns on an uncrowded beach next to dunes covered in sea oats. Small inns and quaint beach cottages are within strolling distance of shops along the Eighth Avenue Historic District, one of the largest of its kind on the gulf coast.

TREASURE ISLAND There’s plenty of space to spread your beach blanket along 3 miles of powdery, white sand on Treasure Island. This beach town is a favorite for locals who gravitate to popular beach bars. Look for local kite-fliers who show up to take advantage of the gulf breezes and the wide-open spaces. For unique entertainment, check out the drumming circle that gathers each Sunday night on the beach an hour before sunset.

FORT DE SOTO PARK CLEARWATER BEACH Fun-loving Clearwater Beach is where sun-seekers come to stay and play. For activities and a wide variety of options, park your beach blanket on the sand at TripAdvisor’s #1 Beach in the U.S. for 2016 (and #20 in the world). Soak up some rays, ride a watercraft, stroll the half-mile Beach Walk, check out the surf shops or grab a bite to eat along the waterfront.

Locals flock to the miles of white, sandy beaches and crystal-blue waters of this popular 1,136-acre county park strewn over 5 islands at the southern tip of the gulf beaches. Fort De Soto Park is a favorite of nature photographers who come here at dawn and dusk to capture images of spectacular sunsets and a diverse species of shore and migratory birds. It offers several beaches with miles of white sand and emerald-clear water, shaded picnic areas, a 7-mile paved trail for biking and blading, kayak and bike rentals, a historic fort, concessions and a fishing pier.

MY

ST PETE PRIDE BY COURTNEY BISHOP

I paid for my nightly double kratom at Bula Kafe and as Ken, “The Chief,” returned my change he remarked, “Thank you, Mrs. Bishop.” To which I replied, “Oh! I always forget that I’m a Mrs.” This comment elicited laughter from a trio of men enjoying kava on the other side of the outdoor bar. I knew that they were laughing at me. At my appearance. At my short hair and tattoos and backwards cap. At the fact that they thought that I was commenting on my own appearance and its relationship to a female identity. I usually stop at Bula on my way home from my job at Pair O’ Dice Brewing. This job can be quite physical and can get messy quickly, so I never wear my real wedding ring during my shifts. My real wedding ring is made of dinosaur bone and meteorite. When my nowwife asked me what kind of wedding band I wanted, I replied, “Something weird that no one else would have … like dinosaur bone.” Being the ambitious and persistent woman that she is, she made it happen. I never wear this ring at the brewery because my hands are always in water and cleaners and I don’t want to risk damaging my prehistoric symbol of everlasting love. So at the brewery, I wear a “work ring.” It’s a $20 tungsten ring that was already a half-size too big when my wife gave it to me (not because she doesn’t know my ring size, but because it was the closest size the vendor had to mine and it’s better to be a bit too big than too small. That’s what he said.). I’ve since lost a bit of weight, so my fingers have slimmed down as well (sorry, ladies). Now when I wear the work ring, it slips off my finger easily. More often than not, I wear it anyway and just keep an eye on it, but on this particular day when I stopped at Bula Kafe, I wasn’t wearing it. Without the ring on, the men on the other side of the bar had no indication that I’m married. So when I said that I sometimes forget I’m a “Mrs.” -- which, when not written out, sounds exactly like the unmarried title,

“Misses” -- and they reacted with laughter, I knew that their reaction was based on my outward appearance. I realized what was going on and, as those who use humor as a defense mechanism tend to do, I got out in front of the joke. “Because I’m married,” I said, “not because I look like a boy.” This addition to the narrative evoked an even bigger laugh. Because at this point, they knew that I knew why they were laughing in the first place and I essentially called them out on their knee-jerk reaction to the seeming juxtaposition that is my identity. I addressed their perception and gave it right back to ‘em. I wasn’t angry or upset that they found this encounter funny -- because it was a funny encounter. But I knew that the second round of laughter had a much different catalyst than the first. And by the second round, we were in on the joke together. I find this a lot in St. Pete. This concept of togetherness. Not just in sexual orientation, gender or lack thereof, but in our work. St. Pete has cultivated this “maker” culture that is basically like a big F.U. to The Man. A giant middle finger -- made of artisanal scones, curated photographs of animated characters from the years 1993 to 1994 and naturally found raccoon teeth -- pointed directly at Big Business. The denizens of Saint Petersburg truly embody the indie spirit. There’s a familial energy that makes the city’s strangers care about one another’s well being. I see it first-hand in the craft beer industry. As Americans, we naturally want to compete. We’ve been led to believe that the space at the top is scarce and we’ve done some pretty shady shit in order to reach this peak of “greatness.” We’re brainwashed to believe that we have to pull each other down in order to stand taller. This is a dangerous lie. And the people of St. Pete know it. We have seven successful breweries in the city -- six of which are located within two square miles of each other -- that prove that there’s room for everyone. The same goes for

organizations like the Saturday Morning and Indie Markets: each small business has its own unique offerings; each artist or “maker” has specialized products that cater to the many interests and niches represented in our city. We know that we don’t have to pull each other down in order to reach greater heights. Instead, we band together and build a staircase made of vintage traffic signs and obsolete cell phones. St. Pete is kind of like its own country within the state of Florida. We’re a little nicer. We’re a little friendlier. We’re a little quicker to hold out a hand to our neighbor. And our community-forward mentality doesn’t stop at business ventures. We embrace the “different.” We celebrate the “weird.” Because what the fuck do those words even mean? There’s no mold to create a perfect person. Well, there is, but it’s already been used on Rashida Jones (call me). Places like the Station House co-working space exist because humans are social creatures. Even the most introverted loners

Images below: My $20 tungsten ring I wear in place of my real ring; sporting our city pride with St Pete t-shirts.

(::cough, me, cough::) are more successful in settings where we can surround ourselves with likeminded mammals. Even if we’re ear-budded and lost in a world of code or words or illustrations, we’re still connected to the source. We’re still connected to one another through the common goal of creation. Although St. Pete’s overall vibe is one of acceptance and equality, assholes still exist everywhere. But in our city, they’re the exception, not the rule. Transgender restrooms are a hot topic right now. I’m a bonafide woman with no interest in changing the anatomy I was born with, but sometimes my outward appearance may suggest otherwise. There have been multiple times when I’ve been washing my hands in the restroom and an older woman would enter, see me, stop, backpedal to the sign on the door, confirm that it is -- in fact -- the ladies’ room, give me a

Images above: Bula Kafe has a laid back atmosphere with plenty of seating outdoors to kickback and enjoy a sunny afternoon; the Edge District is the perfect mix of independant shops, bars, and restaurants, playing to the classic St Pete vibe. second (usually unfriendly) look and go about her business. (I hope you have diarrhea forever, ma’am.) I’ve had even older women outright ask me why I’m in the ladies’ room. I usually respond by flashing them. As a people, we’re certainly a work in progress. My hope is that, one day, we can all be a little more like St. Petersburg.

Our gender (or lack thereof), sexuality (or lack thereof) or race (you’re stuck with this one) is not society’s problem. We are society’s problem. Our actions and reactions report to the world how we feel about ethics, morals and civil rights and illuminate the overall content of our character. If more people embodied the spirit of our city, we wouldn’t be beating one another up about

who we love; we wouldn’t be hating on a colleague or friend’s success; we wouldn’t still be using the term “gay” to refer to anything that is stupid, repulsive or outside the speaker’s comprehension. We’d be less like the first round of laughter I experienced at Bula Kafe and more like the second round. Because we’re all in this together. And that’s my St. Pete Pride.
