BARS YOU’VE GOTTA CHECK OUT

Gay bars began as a means to be with others in our community, to “be gay” without discrimination in a public environment – even if it was secluded and secret. But as our society has advanced in acceptance, so has the purpose of going to bars. Gone are the days of cruise bars and secret entrances. Today’s crowd views bars as a chance to be seen, engage with friends, unwind, and just be social. All over St Pete are local pubs and lounges, each offering a unique spin that’ll make your night enjoyable. And while you’ll surely check out local LGBT favorites such as Georgie’s Alibi, Enigma, The Garage, Lucky Star and The Queens Head during Pride Weekend, you’ll definitely want to check out these five favorites at some point. Each offers an eclectic yet down-home scene that is welcoming to all.

THE CANOPY ROOFTOP LOUNGE

Images from top: The Mandarin Hide, Ruby’s Elixer, The Bends, The Canopy Rooftop Lounge.

340 Beach Drive NE - $$$

Occupying prime real estate, The Canopy Rooftop Lounge is perched atop The Birchwood in the heart of St. Petersburg’s waterfront. Guests will settle in for a casual yet South Beach inspired “see and be seen” experience of breathtaking views, invigorating libations and farm to table tantalizing entrees.

THE MANDARIN HIDE 231 Central Ave - $$

With a self-proclaimed “eclectic and unpretentious vibe,” a visit to this stylish St Pete drinkery is a step back into the bygone era of speakeasies and bootlegging. The Mandarin Hide’s menu is packed with creative cocktails as well as a few classics. And the quaint patio allows you to enjoy the sounds of nearby concerts.

RUBY’S ELIXER 15 3rd Street N - $

Ruby’s is a swank and sophisticated speakeasy with a Prohibition era feel that focuses on live music, mixology and conversation. And the décor matches the concept with a very remarkable stone faced bar highlighted by an in-laid hand crafted wood top. The back bar is tasteful with dark woods and the walls are wrapped with Pin-Up Art from the ‘40s & ‘50s. Proper Ruby Red elegant lighting fits the part, glowing over the granite top cocktail tables and wood floors. The interior room is topped off with a novel, intimate stage for live music. The scene then overflows through the three sets of double French doors to a wide patio of lounge furniture.

page 8

CASK & ALE

29 3rd Street N - $$$ The glamorous Cask & Ale is a popular nightlife spot known for its sheer elegance and unique cocktail menu. Their rotating tapas menu will delight your taste buds, and their one of a kind and changing cocktail menu will simply enhance your experience. Gather as a group or head over as a couple and enjoy the food, drinks and people-watching.

THE BENDS

919 1st Avenue N- $ This is a classy dive bar in St. Petersburg with a diverse crowd from the downtown professional to the hipster. This bar features the works of local artists along the walls and nightly drink specials. As a favorite amongst locals, it has a small and cozy interior and outdoor patio. It’s easy to spot, just look for the large finger pointing towards the door.

Bow-tied bartenders serving classic Manhattans in coupe glasses for an eclectic clientele may be a familiar scene now —as it was more than a century ago—but it took a long time for the cocktail to come back to its full glory. For years we’ve relied on well vodka mixed with tonic, cranberry or Red Bull due to their quick turnaround and cheap prices. This culture has created some pretty lazy bartenders and some very generic cocktail parties. And although this may still be a standard for today’s college gatherings, the ever evolving and demanding Millennial Generation is bringing back the cocktail culture of long ago creating a classic feel for gatherings and a new standard for bartenders.

After competing on The Glee Project, Alex was eventually cast as a series regular on Glee. MAKING PRIDE

Q UNI UE GLEE’ S ALEX NEWELL COMES TO ST PETE

In recent years Alex Newell has gone from a regular high school student to appearing in one of television’s hottest series, thrusting him into the national limelight. Fierce, dynamic, and wildly talented, Newell is a rare talent that will surely energize this year’s St Pete Pride. Newell is universally known as a series regular in the role of “Wade ‘Unique’ Adams” on the recently ended FOX television series Glee. Newell shined as a shy, timid, outcast whose bold and daring personality and talent demanded attention in which every scene Unique appeared. Born in Salem, Massachusetts, Newell grew up in the small town of Lynn, about thirty minutes north of Boston. Newell notes that although his neighborhood was rough growing up, it was a melting pot of culture. He was exposed to dozens of different races, religions, and fine arts from a very young age, and this helped fine tune who his is today and what his career goals would be. He found his love for music in church; his father was a deacon, and his mother was the choir director. Every Sunday he would attend church and sing gospel songs with the choir with his dominant vocals blended in soulful expression. Singing in the church choir is what ultimately lead Newell to explore and hone his talent even further. When Alex was six year old his father passed away from cancer, and he took refuge in song. However, growing up with a single parent, Alex found himself becoming a rebel child and moving from school to school. By high school, he landed at a private Catholic academy with an impeccable arts program. It was here that Alex realized he already knew what he wanted in life: to perform on stage and become a Broadway star. He surrounded himself with music and dedicated

much of his life to concert choir – which was a crash course in every type of music of which he could imagine. He dabbled in Opera, Jazz, A Capella, Chamber, Modern, and others. In 2011, as a junior in high school, Alex decided to send in a self-recorded audition to a new television show premiering on the Oxygen Network titled The Glee Project in which contestants would compete for a role on the Fox series Glee. He shares, “my cousin kept sending me the link to send in my audition online. After the fourth or fifth time I decided I might as well try. So at the very last minute, I recorded my audition in my high school auditorium, solo on stage, and did my best to fill the room with my voice.” Newell’s audition not only garnered the attention of the show’s producers, but it also reached over one million hits on MySpace, where he had uploaded his video for the producers’ consideration. Newell went on to compete on The Glee Project, and finished second in the competition. His prize was a guest starring role in an episode of Glee, and inclusion on the Glee holiday album. Alex learned from the show that perhaps his dream of being on Broadway was not his only dream, as here his eyes were opened to possibilities in television and film as well. Newell would later be cast as a series regular in season five of Glee and would continue to bring his unique talents to his character through the series’ finale. When not working, Alex loves to cook, shop, and he has a passion for interior design. He is also a selfproclaimed YouTube addict. He is an avid supporter of the American Cancer Society, and is a role model and inspiration to LGBT teens worldwide. Alex vows to never change for anyone, and his personal goals include giving people motivation to be whoever they are, no matter how different.

THE PARADE STARTS HERE

saturday BLOCK PARTY AND PARADE The Block Party featuring entertainment on the Wells Fargo Stage as well as fantastic food and beverage vendors begins at 5pm and is the perfect kick off to the evening’s events where over 200,000 people will line the streets when St Pete Pride presents the second edition of its dazzling night time LGBT Parade. The St Pete Pride Parade shattered records last year as it welcomed its inaugural night Parade and proved, once again, to be Florida’s largest and most loved LGBT celebration. Eye popping lights and colors will accent professional floats, charismatic costumes and thousands of rainbow beads as 4500 paraders wind their way through the streets of the Grand Central District and Historic Kenwood. Beat the heat with beverages from Bud Light and Absolut Vodka beginning at 5pm. Step off for the Parade begins at sunset.

GLAMSTANDS The wildly popular, and sure to sell out, GlamStands will return to the Parade route in 2015, offering Parade goers two options for Parade seating and premium food and beverage choices. An overwhelmingly popular addition to the Parade in 2014, the GlamStands have been expanded this year to offer even more seated viewing of the St Pete Pride Parade. LARRY BIDDLE

ASHLEY BRUNDAGE

NICK JANOVSKY

Since moving to the Tampa Bay area in 2004, Larry Biddle has been deeply involved in the cultural and political life of Tampa and St. Petersburg, and in recent years has played a major role in the area’s LGBTQ community. As a leading national fundraiser for more than 47 years, he has raised over $380 million for nonprofits and political purposes.

Ashley Brundage is a highly regarded Personal and Business Relationship Banker for PNC Bank in the Tampa Bay area. She was hired into her current position as a male to female transgender person. Ashley recently celebrated 12 years of marriage to Whitney, and together they have two sons; Bryce (9), and Blake (7).

Larry is chair of the 2015 Equality Florida Greater St. Petersburg Gala, and last year co-chaired the record-breaking Equality Florida Gala that brought marriage equality heroine Edie Windsor to St. Petersburg. As the director of the LGBTQ Welcome Center fundraising for Metro Charities in 2014, he helped to raise more than $120,000 to renovate and open the center, one of only three of its kind in the U.S. Prior to his position with Metro, Larry was executive director of the Tampa International Gay & Lesbian Film Festival from 2012-14. Larry’s company, Planning Works LLC, specializing in nonprofit organizational development, is currently engaged in raising funds for the Warehouse Arts District Association to purchase and renovate 50,000 square feet of warehouse space in St. Petersburg’s midtown area, to be used for artists’ studios, a gallery, and performing and arts education facilities.

Ashley is very active within the LGBTQ community. She transitioned in 2010 and had since worked tirelessly to promote awareness and acceptance of gender identity within the entire community. Ms. Brundage is involved in many local and national non-profit organizations. She is the newly named President of the Tampa Bay Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce. She also holds board positions with the Tampa International Gay and Lesbian Film Festival, The Ybor Youth Clinic, and TransAction Florida. She is involved in a variety of other events, including the Equality Florida Gala for St. Petersburg and Tampa as well as the Tampa Bay Diamond Award Dinner.

Nick Janovsky is the Public Relations Director for Smith & Associates and is a veteran in politics. He has worked in the political arena for over ten years, working his way up from advisory positions to senior campaign staff roles on municipal, state, and federal campaigns. Growing up as a fighter, defending himself and others, Nick developed an empathy for the underdog coupled with a fighting spirit that is evident in everything he does.

Larry has a degree in organizational management from the University of Delaware and is an E-Commerce Fellow at the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. A resident of St. Petersburg’s Historic Roser Park Neighborhood, he was president of the neighborhood’s association for five years. He lives with his husband of 23 years, David Warner.

STONEWALL DEMOCRATS

Ashley has been recognized in many areas and has received numerous awards including: 2014 PNC Bank Circle of Excellence Award and 2014 Market All Star Award, University of South Florida 2014 Community Pride Award, and 2013 Watermark Wave Award. Ashley was nominated for the Tampa Bay Business Journal Business Woman of the Year, The Trans 100 and the PNC Bank Performance Award in 2014. Ashley was named one of the 14 Most Remarkable People of 2014 by Watermark Magazine in December of 2014.

Nick has been a trailblazer for others to follow in many arenas. He penned the book, Gay: A New Path Forward, and he is the founder and CEO of Strategic Campaigns, LLC. Nick held indispensable roles leading to victories in the Kevin Beckner campaign, who was the highest ranked LGBTQ official to win public office in Florida at that time, and he was the Campaign Manager for Darden Rice, who was the first open lesbian to run for public office in Pinellas County. Recently, Nick served as Political Director for the Alex Sink for Congress Campaign and was the statewide Political Director for Attorney General Candidate George Sheldon, where he organized the community against anti-LGBTQ legal attacks from Pam Bondi. Nick has led speaking tours on equality, commenting and delivering letters on Domestic Partner Registries and Human Rights Ordinances in five major cities across Florida since 2010. Regarded for having stellar business acumen, Nick has also led several successful business projects and has an extensive management background.

Stonewall Democrats of Pinellas County are leaders in Pinellas when it comes to helping get equality minded candidates for office elected, and equality minded legislation passed. From members of the LGBTQ community to allies, Stonewallers have done the door knocking, phone banking, and fundraising required to insure that Pinellas County is becoming a leader in equality state wide. The organization was formed in 2004 by a small group of equality-minded Democrats dedicated to advancing the cause of equality for all people, regardless of sexual identity, gender expression or gender identity. This dedicated group has worked tirelessly to bring local Democrats to office. Through their efforts, the Stonewall Democrats of Pinellas County have contributed to many victories, including helping to elect the first openly gay city council member in the history of St Petersburg.

It was a tweet sure to make Vladimir Putin take notice … not to mention other U.S. leaders, including religious evangelicals backing the current anti-gay crackdown in Russia. On April 4, 2014, a smiling Hillary Clinton tweeted a snapshot taken with two of the most famous members of the punk art protest group Pussy Riot, Maria Alekhina and Nadezdha (Nadya) Tolokonnikova, while at the 5th annual Women in the World Summit in New York. “Great to meet the strong & brave women from #PussyRiot, who refuse to let their voices be silenced in #Russia,” tweeted Clinton, a shout-out that quickly garnered 9,000 retweets on Twitter and more than 10,000 “Favorites.”

PUSSY RIOT

By Anne-Christine D’Adesky

Pride Magazine, Full Media Communications

The tweet also served to further elevate the power of the punk-art rockstars of Russia’s political opposition, and of Russia’s feminist and LGBT movements. Following 2013’s passage of a law outlawing adoption by LGBT individuals in Russia and the tide of anti-gay violence that has ensued, members of Pussy Riot have used their media spotlight to push for LGBT rights, as straight allies. They’ve hobnobbed with Madonna and been praised by a growing list of peace activists, from Yoko Ono to Aung San Suu Kyi. Today, they are considered Russia’s most famous political dissident glitterati after Nobel Prize winner Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn.

The road has hardly been easy. In 2011, their brazen mix of Riot Grrl-style punk lyrics and performance art led to their arrest and imprisonment for almost two years for the crimes of “hooliganism” and “inciting religious hatred” following their performance of an anti-Putin ditty called “A Punk Prayer,” at Moscow’s Cathedral – the symbolic heart of the Orthodox Russian church. (A third group member, Yekaterina Samutsevich, was also jailed and released in 2012.) Few Russians saw the live performance, but

page 49

millions of Internet viewers watched the edited video Pussy Riot posted afterward. From the start, the everrotating members of Pussy Riot have used the power of performance, video, and social media to get their message out. “We understand what Jesus Christ would have done in such a situation,” Nadya told the audience at the New York panel, reflecting back to her jailing. “He would have gone to the cathedral and he would have threw out all these traitors.” Her remarks were a deliberate rebuff to critics who label Pussy Riot as anti-God. It was also an invitation to the body of Russia’s main Protestant Church to join the revolution and embrace gay rights as human rights.

While Pussy Riot’s colorful trademark ski-mask-style balaclavas, rainbow leggings, and house dresses reflect their punk attitude against authority, their political daring and Nadya’s prison hunger strike have demonstrated the seriousness and bravery that marks their activism, feminist work, and fight against the red tide of homophobia that’s so rampant in Russia right now. And their equality efforts don’t stop there. Post prison, having endured harsh 14-hour days sewing uniforms in freezing cells, Nadya and Maria formed a new advocacy organization, Zona Prava, to advocate for prison reform. Prior to the Sochi Olympics, Pussy Riot joined protests against the anti-gay adoption law. At Sochi, the shocking image of protesters being horsewhipped by Cossack security agents exposed the extreme violence facing LGBT activists and allies. Pussy Riot members were doused with pepper spray, beaten with billy clubs, then detained for several hours by the Cossack guard after attempting a new song, “Putin teaches us to love our motherland.” Having survived the Gulag, arrests, a public trial, beatings, hunger strikes, and public tirade of hate, Maria and Nadya remain powerful voices of hope for other activists and leaders facing arrests and prison now. “A different Russia already exists,” Nadya said to the assembled in New York, a message she continues to deliver as Obama has joined G-6 leaders to impose sanctions on Putin and his cronies. She pointed to the large anti-Putin rallies held in Moscow as evidence of the growing power of the movement to reclaim freedom and civil liberties. While the immediate picture is grim, Pussy Riot is helping to assure that LGBTQ rights are part of the evolving Russia.
